Guitar recording with mp3. SB li

Hello?I have sb li've! and I have connected my guitar to comp. I can hear both, guitar sound and mp3 out of speakers, but I would like to record the sound on my comp. I can only find a way to record only one sound at the time. Not both same time. Is it even possible to set comp recording all sounds what come out speaker with this sb li've!, even if they come from different channels? Help please. -Way-

This is best to do w/ multitracking/sequencer software.
Method: load the mp3 file into track # and record your own playing into tracks #2 -#n. You can record as many instruments/takes as you like.
There are no 'easy to use' free-/donation-/shareware software which supports mp3 import (w/ Kreati'ves Kristal, you need to convert mp3 to wave as for an example before you can import). could be one you can try. There is also software called Audacity but IMO, it's not very good because of lack of certaing functionality. You propably need to install too to get best performance out from Li've! (meaning low latency, etc).
Install Asio4All
Install Reaper, set Audio device to Asio4All.
Set samplerate to 4400 or 48000 or and latency buffer settings (ASIO Config -button) to 386-52 (you may need to change this bigger if you hear crackling/popping or get audio dropouts).
In Reaper,
- create a new project,
- insert a media file (Menu: Insert->Media file ...) ; find your mp3 file
- insert new track (Ctrl+T)
- set its input port to the one you have the quitar connected (you may need to set this recording source in SB mixer software too) use mic for microphone and line-in for line source (don't use "Wht U Hear")
- arm the guitar track for recording by pressing the grey 'O' button in track header properties
(- toggle the monitoring option if you dont hear any signal, you mayu need to enable monitoring in li've software too)
- set recording levels
- press record for recording (ctrl-R)
- when done, pres the long "space bar" in keyboard to stop the recording
- etc.
Read the Reaper Documentaion.
Kristal would be easier to set up and use but you need to convert those mp3 files to wav (flac, aiff or ogg) to get them imported.

• Stereo recording with MP3 recorder using external stereo

I want to record digital streo sound and wonder if I need to buy a MD recorder or if I could use an MP3 recorder which I'd prefer? Therefore please explain if an external stereo mic. can be connected to any of your MP3 players/recorders. If so, which model. If not, please explain if an external stereo mic. also could be connected to the 'line in', and if so, if it could be connected directly, or if it needs to have a preamp in between. If so, which preamp to use with which MP3 recorder?thank you for any answer.

thank's for your fast answer. Are the two players you mention older models? According to the creative site there are three models offered nowadays with the name 'jukebox7: Jukebox Zen NX, Jukebox Zen Extra and Jukebox Zen USB 2, but as much as I understand their specifications they do not have a 'line in', or do they? If they don't, well, even though this is a creative's forum, are there any MP3 recorders from other manufacturers which would do the job?
Concerning the mic, are there mics offered which include a preamp? If so, which one would you recommend? If not, what kind of preamp with which specifications do I have to get to connect with which kind of mic? Any mic offered for MD recorders? Would my Panasonic mic of my video recorder do the job as well? Could be that this mic for the video recorder already includes a preamp?
thank's again for any help,

• Recording with MP3 converter

For MP3 conversion , CCA seems to be compliant only with LAME application that is a single thread conversion and take long time to convert a big list in the quality folder.
I need to convert a big quantity of recording.
Anyone know if it is possible to use another third party application instead Lame ?
Thanks and regards
Mauro

If the file server is a windows machine you can disable the last modified update in the registry. This will increase the performance in a large directory quite a bit while it converts each file.
I'd also recommend you run Profiler or similar on the 'selects' the MP3 server sends. Create an index specific to that select and be sure to add the result set as the included columns. That will make the DB query to identify the files very efficient. Unfortunately you will see that the company ID’s that are higher will be lower on the order returned.
Other than that, you will be depending on CPU and base file system IO to work the backlog.

• Recording with guitar to computer through USB X-Fi

I am having a problem trying to record with my guitar through my USB X-Fi 5.. I am using a program called Audacity to capture the recording. I have my guitar hooked up to a Line 6 POD 2.0 effects device that has a left/right output. Then I plugged the /8th male end running from that into the Line-In port on the USB X-Fi 5. and then to my computer via USB. But I cannot hear my guitar when playing and it will not capture the recording. I basically bought the USB X-Fi 5. because when recording with my guitar I thought that my laptops sound card was making the recording of low quality. So I got the USB X-Fi 5. to help that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Message Edited by BulletFMV on 2-06-2008 03:42 PMMessage Edited by BulletFMV on 2-06-2008 03:43 PM

That USB audio interface isn't any better for recording from onboard sound. You should have bought least the Creative E-MU 0202 USB (if you prefer Creative products/USB audio interfaces).
With your current setup, instead of using Audacity, you could try, say, Cockos Reaper + Asio4All driver.

In any case, remember also read the software documentation as well ... all needed information for recording task is normally guided there in user manual(s).

• How can I record my guitar amp with garageband?

Hello, new member and new to recording with garageband!
I would like to capture the live sound of my guitar amp using garageband. I know there are many modelling and FX options using GB, but I really want to hear how my amp sounds.
I'm using the following:
-macbook pro and garageband
-Presonus Inspire 1394 interface
Traynor YCV 50 all-tube guitar amp
-Shure SM57 mic
-Yamaha SG700 electric guitar
So far, the results have been dismal. My main instinct was to keep all levels in the green and go for it. I used the most basic setting in GB with no effects added. All attempts sound like I'm playing into a garbage can.
Any quick tips would be appreciated, please and thanks!

Your setup should be getting excellent results.
Are you using a real instrument track?
Are you sure garageband is getting the input from the Shure and not the built in mic?
Is the mic close to the speaker / pointed at the speaker / have you tried pointing it at different parts of the speaker?

• Audio from imported video doesn't sync with mp3 audio imported

I thought I had a neat way to easily "back up" my audio of an event by using an mp3 recorder on the podium to capture speaker and just recording with on-cam mic at the camcorder, so not to have to mess with wireless mics and jack connections on the camcorder. My thought was that since these are both "digital" recordings of the same event, they would stay in sync. Yet when I put them both in the time line of iMovie, the mp3 sound file does not stay in sync, falling behind. Every sentence or so I have to cut some of the file out to shorten it and bring it back into sync. Any guess why these don't stay in sync?
PV-GS500 DV tape camcorder, sansa m250 mp3
Cutting the sound file to keep it in sync worked, and I needed in for an event I just recently did, where the first speaker, who spoke briefly, did not turn on the room mic, and couldn't be heard well by the camera mic. So we now hear perfectly what that first speaker said, but I was disappointed that I had to trim after every sentence to keep the mp3 audio in sync.
Thanks, Dale

I'm assuming that you are using the Sound class to control
the MP3 sounds? If that is the case then they will not be sync with
your timeline and if your animations are too much for the SWF to
stay at the 30fps rate then it will slow down to complete the
animations.
One way to sync them up would be to place them in a layer in
your timeline and then in the Parameters box at the bottom set the
Sync dropdown to Stream.
Then if your movie slows the audio and animations will still
be together.
This is not as flexible as you may currently have it but it
might work for you.

• Recording with Garageband for IOS

I wanted to share a recording or two using the ipad so that people could see that garageband for IOS doesn't suck.  I didn't spend too much time throwing them together, but at the same time they're not too horrible either. They give a pretty decent idea of what a 1st gen ipad with a 5 dollar app is capable of in regards to guitar and shred-type guitar stuff. I'm kind of sick of reading and listening to scathing reviews on how the ipad and Garageband in particular is for non-musicians and noobs who want to sound like they're making music... (ooo that could describe me... yikes!) If I could have had an ipad-like device when I was just getting started, I think that I would be a much better player today. I am totally blown away at the expectations people have of a 5 dollar program, when they haven't spent the time trying to see what it does do well. Anyways, here's hoping that this post helps people out that are trying to find out what the capabilities of an ipad with GB are, especially if they are a guitarist. At the end of the day, it is still the person using the device that either makes it sound horrible, mediocre or amazing...
So anyways, I decided to make a quick track where I didn't spend too much time on the music, and I used only what was in GB in regards to my tones and stuff; That means all stock amp and pedal combinations. I also wanted a track that focused on guitar parts, and making the best of what the app has to offer. I'm sure with some tweaking and mucking around there could be some much cooler tones generated, but hey... it is what it is. Also, I used a Godin LGXT direct into the ipad with an Apogee Jam. Very inexpensive. Bass and drums were recorded with the Line6 Mobile25. The tablet's screen works too, but I find that the keyboard is a lot more accurate, especially for drums. Obviously, you could go into the drum and guitar parts and edit and tweak the parts further, creating drum parts that feel and sound a bit more lifelike, but I didn't do that here; this one was about direct recorded electric guitar...
https://soundcloud.com/jayesskerr/ipadgination
Arguably, you could also record your stuff via microphones also. In this case I used a Roland VS880 as a mixer (It was handy), with 4 CAD microphones connected to it to capture my drum kit. (I'm not much of a drummer, but you get the idea...) I then just lined out of the VS880 into the apogee Jam into the ipad. BANG! This app could work very easily for drummers also... or people who must have their tone and not a digital preset...
https://soundcloud.com/jayesskerr/just-drums
I own a couple of good mac boxes loaded with killer software, and I also have some decent interfaces. They are pretty superior in regards to the amount of options that they present, without a doubt. And then when you include all of the 3rd party plugins and loops and stuff that you can get... well, it's very, very nice. The ipad intrigued me because it's self contained, and is extremely portable. It has limitations which force one to be kind of clever in order to work around them. Also, the recording process with an ipad is very, very quick. Setup time is minimal.  So anyways, with just Garageband, and an Apogee Jam (I have the irig connector also, but in my opinion the Jam is so much superior...). The only other thing I'd reccomend is the Line6 Mobilekeys25 which I used here; MUCH easier to enter notes in on bass and drums. Here's some points to sum up my opinions on my experience with the device;
No it's not better than Logic or Cubase or prottols or something with an interface. It's only a 5 dollar app on a 600 dollar tablet (In my case an outdated 1st generation ipad).
There's only 8 tracks, but you can bounce and merge.
The amount of sections is limited, but you can work around that too...
It's extremely portable. Way less gear to haul and set up, but feel free to use your own stuff with it also...
GB on a tablet is very, very easy to learn. Super intuitive and quick to use.
The amount of sections is limited, but again you could always just make another song project and then stitch it together later...
The amp and pedal emulations aren't as good as Guitar Rig, a line6 Pod Pro hd, or a FAS Axe-FXII. But they aren't horrible, they are certainly pretty good for the price of 5 bucks...
If you're broke/poor and want to get into recording and sharing your music, this is the ideal way to go about it. Your recording device (The ipad) also makes documents, does email, takes and edits pictures, takes and edits video... The only thing standing in the way of you sounding great is you...
The 'merge track' option is a powerful tool, especially on your midi tracks.
No pitch correction. Waaaaaahhh boo hoo! You're gonna have to learn how to sing. Plus, it's only 5 bucks!
Don't want to use the internal drum sounds? Or want to use your amp's miced sound? Get a small mixer, and connect your mic to that. Then connect the mic to the Apogee Jam (There are other products out there that work better and in stereo, but this would do in a pinch) and you should be good to go.
I recommend using a small keyboard like the Line6 Mobile Keys 25 to enter your midi/virtual instruments stuff in. For me, using just the pad means more track editing after I enter it...
The last point is this; there's other software besides just GB. Cubasis anyone?
Anyways, thanks for checking this out, I hope that it helps, and if anyone else has any opposing viewpoints or points to add, please do.

• Guitar recording

Hi !
This is a part of my equipment :
Fender Stratocaster (Electric guitar) , Yamaha USB Mixer (mw10) , and mac mini.
How can I record the guitar? (using the mixer)
thanks,
Dror

1st off I don't have a Mini so YMMV. I have an Imac that has a small preamp built-in it (apparently) - I run my LP and my Strat directly into my LINE-IN on the back of my Imac. I use a standard guitar cable with a cheap lil' 1/4" -> 1/8" adapter (Radio Shack - $3.00) to go into the LINE-IN - works beautiful - just remember in System Pref. to select LINE-IN and also in whatever software you might be using. I was told in the beginning to get an interface - tried 2 different ones including a USB FastTrack but found I really didn't need anything as I get a nice FAT FULL signal just going in direct. I use it this way with Garageband, Logic, Amplitube, Guitar Rig, etc and it sounds awesome. I'd try that coming out of your mixer (LINE-OUT) with another cable going in to see. If your levels aren't good (hardly any sound) then you'll probably need a preamp of sorts like an INTERFACE - a Toneport, a Firewire, etc.

• Recording with the SB Audigy 2 zs plat PRO external is horribly low volume... setup probl

I have my guitar plugged into line /line 2 and whenever I enable recording, the sound that is recorded is incredibly low. I have to set my speaker and system volume to the max just to hear a little bit of sound(i have the 7. S750 creative speakers). I also experiance this with the mic i'm using. I'm using a cheaper professional Shure microphone and have it hooked up, via a XLR converter form radio shack, to my external SB hub. This mic requires no pre-amp and its turned on but the sound is also very low. I was wondering if this is normal, or if i'm missing some vital peace of information on how to record properly. Oh and also, I have the recording volume maxed in media source and on the external hub and I have also used the M-Audio: mobile pre usb, to record with the same guitar/microphone, and it sounded fine volume wise, what gives? my rate is 320 bits.

OldPainless,
I'm hoping that means that you found the connector and all is working now? I know it happens around here more often than we would like to admit. Frequently swapping out hardware leads to forgotten things like this.

• Is Voice Recording in MP3 a crazy feature?

I've just bought a 528 stick and tried a interesting feature: Recording voices in mp3 format. Msi said that recording in mp3 will take only 1/10 of space compared to wav. They lied, recording in this format with any quality take at least 128Kbps, that mean it cost the same with Best quality mode of wav. What is the hell going on?

Quote from: bassmadrigal on 02-September-05, 17:03:54
Even if it is stuck at 128kbps the file size should still be way smaller than the wav file.
I don't think so, jeremy. The waves' bit rate are 32Kbps, 64Kbps, 128Kbps corresponding to 8KHz, 16KHz and 32KHz of sample rate. They are all compressed in IA PCM format, so they are almost always the smaller in term of size. MP3s under 44KHz of sample rate should encoded in lower bit rate rather than always be 128Kbps so that would be more economic and MP3 recording feature have its full advantages!

• Guitar Recording Issue In Mic Phone-Input

I am trying to record guitar tracks while plugged into my microphone input with an 1/4 in. to 1/8 in. adapter, but my Windows 7 Satellite L775D-S7305 won't pick it up. I've recorded this way (as I'm sure many others have as well) on my desktop computer with no problem. All of my volumes are up and un-muted, so no need to question this. It works with an actual microphone at recording, but not the guitar input and the problem is not in my recording software. I have tried recording with "Wave Mapper" "Microphone (Realtek HD)" and "Stereo Mix (Realtek HD)" but still nothing. Also, my built-in microphone works flawlessly. If anyone knows anything about this, I would be greatly appreciative to learn how to fix this. I'll give extra info on the issue if needed.

I'm not sure if any of this will help, just more things to look at...
I was thinking that perhaps the levels from the guitar pickups might not be hot enough to show up, but if a mic does, then I can't imagine a pickup showing less level.
Compared to the mic 1/8" plug, does the adapter that you are using have the same tip/ring arrangement?  Basically is it just tip/ring, or does it have more divisions like a stereo plug would? eg. tip/ring/ring
If it's a stereo arrangement, then perhaps the contacts in the mic jack are touching on the wrong part of the plug barrell and getting the unused channel.  If that's the case, then see if you can find a mono 1/4 to 1/8 adapter.
That's about all I could think of, as you seem to have covered the other possibilities.
Of course, if all else fails you could go the route of an external USB convertor, I'm pretty sure that ART, Roland, Alesis, etc have many options along those lines.

• Anyone use a voice recorder? MP3 editing? Compatibility issues?

Specifically the Sony ICD-PX820.

Will I be happy with the new version of iMovie after using 6 for so long?
Not everybody (including me) has been! iMovie 9 is basically for making YouTube videos. But you will like iDVD 9, which will come pre-installed with iLife 9.
But you can retain iMovie 6.0.3 and have both.
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 9 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife install disks.
Now re-install iMovie 9. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.
Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:
Open terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife08.plist"
(No quotes)
Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.
This is said to work with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

Safari 5 running in Snow Leopard has been a problem for me. It screws up html, loads a distorted control bar in HTML5 and crashes every now and again when I do a Google search. Reporting these issues is a waste of time as the latest update had no fix. I test all my pages in Firefox and Chrome and don't bother much with Safari since less than 3% use it.
I have the same issue as the OP. The file will only load in Safari if the page is open in Firefox at the same time.
This problem arose over a year ago and is related to files imported from iTunes via the media browser. If the OP will confirm that the file came from iTunes, I will have a look at the meta data to see if there's anything there that iTunes has added.
The only time I am forced to use iTunes is for apps that don't allow import from the finder such as certain situations in Keynote. Otherwise, I wish it would disappear down a black hole in the universe along with Windows and Internet Explorer.
I converted the file to MP4 with QT Pro to prove the point that its the actual MP3 file that is causing the problem - along with Safari.
I haven't depended on the QT Plugin for playing media for quite some time now. HTML5 now works in all modern browsers and should also work in IE 8 if the HTML5 Shiv is included in the head of the page.
Its also a breeze to get flexible movies in responsive web design using HTML 5...
http://www.ezmacwebdesign.com/Music-Website/index.html
I don't bother too much with flash fallback anymore since these designs are mainly for mobile devices and I can ignore those who are reluctant to upgrade their out of date browsers.
