Gutenprint quits repeatedly & Epson Driver has gone nuts

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, when I attempt to print from my Epson R340, Gutenprint quits the moment I click the "Print" command in the printer setup window.
On the other hand, when I print from Photoshop, I somehow end up in what looks like my normal Epson print window, but the printer goes berserk and spits out several blank pages, two of which have half of my image printed on them.
Comments appreciated.

Did you possibly have a later version of Gutenprint installed before you updated? OS X 10.6 ships with Gutenprint v5.2.3. A later version of Gutenprint was released shortly before OS X 10.6 shipped and did not make it into the OS X 10.6 release.
If you had the latter version of Gutenprint installed before updating to OS X 10.6, the Snow Leopard installer will make your printers stop working. The solution is to reinstall Gutenprint v5.2.4. This is available from http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
If that is not your case, please use a web browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:631/admin/log/error_log? This will display the CUPS error_log. There should be an error notice (begins with 'E date...' there followed by multiple lines of debugging information (begins with 'D date...'). Please post the error message and perhaps 50 to 75 lines of the debugging information.

  • Help! My optical drive has gone nuts!

I ejected a CD this morning and since then the optical drive has been making eject noises every 30 seconds or so, even though there's nothing in the slot. I tried rebooting the computer but that did nothing. I also tried restarting it and pressing on the trackpad to see if there was another CD stuck in it but nothing came out. Can someone please help?

  • Safari display has gone nuts

Yesterday my Safari display has gone nuts.  Just displays a long list of items on the website....no graphics and the links don't work. Every site is the same.
    I did a restart.....I did a shutdown....still the same.
    Firefox works fine.
I tried to find a download to reinstall Safari but no luck.
How can I get Safari working again?
    thanx

Well, I only have one extension: AdBlock.  I disable that and now it works fine...everything is loading.
But it used to work fine with adblock enabled.  What has changed?
Without Adblock I find Safari difficult to use.
    Thanx for your reply.

  • My iPhone USB driver has gone missing

My iPhone USB driver has gone missing and won't recognize when I try to update from the device drivers... can someone give a suggestion on how to get it back?  It went MIA when I upgraded to the newest iTunes today.

I'm sorry to hear your phone is not responding! I'd love to get it back up and running. Can you press and hold both the front button and the top button? You may need to hold it for a few minutes, but an Apple will appear when the device resets. Keep us posted!

  • Time Machine has Gone Nuts

I hope somebody can help with this. I have an aluminum Macbook Pro with a 160 GB internal drive and an external Seagate 300 GB drive. There's about 50 GB of miscellaneous stuff on the external drive alongside a Time Machine backup -- in the same partition.
Lately every backup takes forever -- a half hour or more. And the time is increasing. It seems like soon Time Machine will have to run continuously to back up once an hour. During the backup it churns the drive mercilessly -- the head chatters and chatters throughout the backup. If I select the Backups.backupdb and get info on it, I get the same sounds -- and it takes forever, many minutes, to determine the size of that folder. I usually lose patience before it's finished.
However, the backups seem fine. I can open Time Machine and restore from a backup without problems. In all other ways, the drive seems to be functioning fine. I have no reason to believe it's failing.
So -- could drive fragmentation be the culprit? Do I not have enough free space on the drive? (just 15 GB). Can I degrag the drive with Drive Genius 2? Any other suggestions?
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Steve

Below are a few more console items from that time period. (I'm downloading Time Machine buddy but I assume it'll show the same stuff.) I have no idea whether any of this is relevant, but they're the only items that seem to imply errors. (Except the one in the previous post "Unable to rebuild path cache")
I should add that the backup this morning took well over an hour, at which point I stopped it. It was backing up roughly one day of changes -- not a whole lot of stuff. If I left it on all the time it would never stop working. And throughout the entire process the disk is making a constant churning noise with the head moving all over the place. Just doing a get info on backups.backupdb creates the same noise.
I've read the D2 section in the TM troubleshooting doc and I'm afraid I don't see anything relevant there. I'd long ago removed the TM disk from Spotlight indexing and I don't run an antivirus ap. I will run disk utility on the disk shortly.
My next step is to give up and switch disks. I've got a new 1.5T that I'm going to partition -- one for TM, one for everything else. And I'll start with a fresh backup. But this old backup has stuff going back nearly a year. If needed, can I unplug the new drive, plug in the old one and go back in time with it?
    Thanks again,
    Steve

  • Upgraded to 10.8.1 and now my WD external drive has gone "bad".

Worked well last night when I moved large files on to it to make room for Creative Cloud apps...
Then this morning after installing 10.8.1 upgrade and restarting, it didn't appear and is unreadable.
Disk utility said it could not repair it.
Have gone to the WD site, downloaded and upgraded the firmware & software, the WD diagnostics seems to be stuck
    on the 90% complete mark.
Do you think this is Mountain Lion or do I need to have the external hard drive taken to a place that
can (hopefully) take off all of my client files and time machine backups (ouch!)
    Thanks so much!

    MommaKaren,
I'm in the same situation, certainly it's a problem with Moutain Lion. I did a rollback to Lion yesterday and my HD MyBook worked as usual.
It's not the first time that WD have this kind of compatibility issues with Apple OS, It seems like everytime Apple makes major chages in its core OS the problems apears.
I'll wait for a solution from Apple (system update) or WD (firmware update).
WD is denying this compatibility issue, but everyday the number of users with the same problem increase, thus expect a solution pretty soon.
    Regards,
    Ewerton

  • Holy Moly - My drive has gone!

Every time I put anything (old CD, new CD, DVD) into my cd drive, the computer kind of whirrs a bit, ponders, then spits them right back out at me without recognising its existence. This is starting to annoy me as this problem has suddenly just occurred over the course of a weekend.
After a period of time of not really using my CD drive much, I stuck a DVD in it the other week and found that it was working perfectly fine. A few days later, I tried to copy some songs across from an audio CD. iTunes managed to get about three songs across, but then certain songs would not copy and would end up locking up the whole computer. A few days after THAT I tried burning a CD. This caused my computer to freeze up again, and when I finally got the burned CD out of the machine, only half the songs played on a CD player.
I then went away for a weekend, and now when I stick anything back in, it just spits it right back out at me.
Anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing this and, more importantly, how to stop it? I have already had a look in the forum and tried various suggestions, including: OnyX, deleting finder preferences, blowing into the drive. None of these seems to have had much effect.
    Hmm.
    Thanks guyzz.
(I am on a flat-screen iMac, 10.3.9, but to the best of my knowledge, I don't think I have a Superdrive)

i have a totally different issue whereby from brand new i updated the firmware and it doesnt recognize any brand of blank CD that i put in it, despite my emac rexognising them. At the moment I cannot burn to CD/DVD because only disk utilities recognises the disk is there and labels it a matsushita even though they are Sony CD's.
    any thoughts?

  • Time machine backing up has gone nuts!

Configuration: MBP mid 2010, 13 inch, SSD 120 GB, Ram 8 GB, TM Drive 1 TB external Seagate. Running on Mountain Lion 10.8.4
For some unknown reason, TM backin up seems to go on endlessly and the backup size keeps on growing. This has been happening for about a week! As a result the machine wont sleep for several hours. the backup size usually goes up to as much as 25 GBs!
Can someone tell me whats going on?

Do you use virtualization software, such as VMware, Parallels, or VirtualBox?
The virtualization software creates a large virtual-disk container that is constantly changing, so it has to be backed up every time Time Machine runs. That will quickly fill up any backup destination.
You should exclude the virtual-disk file(s) from your Time Machine backups. To do that, click the Options button in the Time Machine preference pane. Back up the files on the virtual disk from within the guest system, using a native backup application.
A compromise solution is to create a "snapshot" of the virtual machine in the virtualization software (not a Time Machine snapshot.) That will give you a single large file that never changes and only has to be backed up once. All the subsequent changes will be stored in a new file that's initially much smaller, but will grow over time. You should still exclude that file from TM backup. If you ever need to restore the VM from Time Machine, you'll have a working setup, which will make it easy for you to restore the rest of the data from within the guest system.
Another common cause of large TM snapshots is native OS X disk images. If you store a lot of data on one or more writable disk images, they should be in "sparsebundle" format, which will be backed up much more efficiently than any other format. Also be aware that disk image files are not backed up at all while the image is mounted. Make sure you unmount the image often so it can be backed up. If you ever restore, you will, of course, lose all changes made since the last backup. Consider eliminating large read/write disk images from your workflow, if possible.

  • My CPU Has Gone Nuts

Observing either iStat or Activity Monitor my two CPU windows usually show about the same amount of activity. In iStat this looks like a blue, wave line across the bottom of the squares representing the CPUs. (Core 2 Duo) Usually the windows seem to be pretty much in sync.
There were some Apple updates waiting for me last night, one was a Mac OS X update but I didn't really pay close attention. I installed the three that were there.
This morning when I booted my MacBook I noticed one of the CPU windows was maxed out and the fan was running. The fan never runs when I boot. Then the one CPU window would show the activity go down to nothing and the other CPU window would max out. I've never seen this before.
The CPU temp varies from 65 to 73, doing nothing. I removed all auto launched apps at startup, shut down the computer, then restarted it. No diff.
    Any ideas?
BTW, I realize my fan is always running, what I meant was it's not usually working hard enough to hear it.

lol Staying one step ahead of you.
Uninstalled and reinstalled the latest driver. But that wasn't the problem.
I had sent a print job to the printer the day before, but nothing happened so I assumed it was a wi-fi issue and didn't feel like dealing with it then. No print dialog or error message had come up. Turns out the printer decided it was out of ink even though there is still a little ink left in the cartridge. (At what works out to about $1000.00 a gallon for the stuff I'd like the choice to run it dry) So I guess the driver was saying "Print!" and the printer was saying "No!" and neither displayed an error message or dialog box of any kind. Once the MacBook was restarted the argument would continue.
The most annoying aspect of the whole situation is that it seems to be a bug in that part of Lexmark's software that tells you it's time to replace your ink cartridge. God forbid you should get a few extra pages out of a cartridge.
    Thanks for your input.

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.

2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that.
