"Gutter jump" for photos across 2-page spreads

I am new to InDesign and cannot find a clue on how to set up a two-page spread in a multi-page publication that is destined for CMYK process printing so that a photograph running across the "gutter" between the pages will print properly in the final publication. Printers used to call this a "gutter jump", but that phrase does not come up in searches of help databases (nor does any equivalent phrase).
This is not for a page that will simply be folded, but, instead, where the pages will be (for example) pages 4 and 5 of a 16-page signature.
In the pre-computer era, this was done with two separations of the same image -- the part that would appear on the left-hand page and the part that would appear on the right-hand page -- and was set up so there was overlap of image content between the two in the area where the two pages would meet (so the image would be continuous even if binding covered parts of the image along the spine area or if the pages were not opened completely flat).
I've found no "how to" guide for this anywhere (books, the PDF guide that came with the program, FAQs, or in forums).
So: On a two-page spread setup in InDesign, can a photo simply be inserted to jump the gutter between the pages, with InDesign sorting out how to split the image later when the file is RIPped?
Or, do I insert cropped sections of the photo onto the two facing pages, much as was done in the past (the left portion on the left page and the right portion on the right page, with some image content overlap in the center)?
If there's a tutorial or a post on this, directions to it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Set up your document as facing pages and just place the photo right
across the spine. When you export the PDF, the photo will be properly
split on the spine and the two portions will show up on the correct pages.

  • Image across 2 page spread?

Is it possible to get an image to spread across 2 pages wide without having to split it in half manually and import two seperate images?
I can not for the life of my find any way to do this
    thanks for any tips

There is no need for a "hack" or other editing to make 2 halves. Since the photo will "disappear" off of the page, all you need to do is insert the image twice or duplicate it & then line up the photo on two side by side pages. Use the pop-up at the bottom left of the document & choose two-up. You could also mask one half on one page & the other half on the other page.
I suggest you leave feedback for the Pages team regarding this. You can find it under the Pages menu > Provide Pages Feedback. That takes you to the same page as this link.

  • Comprehensive integration approach for photos across multiple computers?

    Hi All--
I've been wading through the discussion boards and have multiple partial pieces of info. However, I am looking for a state-of-the-art solution to an old problem because I want to integrate all of my photos onto a single drive and (probably) library from several sources (different computers). Many may have redundant images between them. Some of my key questions are:
    1) Is there any software out there that could (in a batch mode) look for and group photos with identical or highly similar content based on the image data itself (not file name) and allow side-by-side comparison to reduce redundancy and do an initial sort before import? It seems daunting to just put all files in one spot to try to compare manually. Do Aperture or PS offer anything liker this capability?
    2) Assuming >10,000 images, is it better to have a single library; or to move between, say "work" and "personal" libraries? Is such moving between libraries readily practicable in iPhoto 06?
    3) Will I ultimately want to organize all of my photos into one location and then do a single, massive import into iPhoto for best library organization, or is there a better way?
    4) After all of this consolidation, if I use default iPhoto library organization, I will e.g. have shots from year 2000 named as rolls from 2006, etc. Is it worth the effort of trying to create a better file organization, or just rely on accessing the massive iPhoto library and creating albums and smart albums?
    5) I am willing to dedicate significant time and effort now to do this correctly once, not looking for a quick-fix. I need a solid strategy to begin with. How do I get well-organized after getting out of the blocks in such a sloppy fashion? What is current "best-practice"?
    6) For future security, can I rely on Retrospect or the new upcoming backup systems, or should I back up image libraries separately?
Looking for some sound advice to get this moving over the holidays. Your help will be appreciated. Sportscarbill

Try iPhoto Library Manager to merge the various libraries. It's a shareware ($20) and you can read about it here.
    http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iphotolibrarymanager.html
For Duplicates, check out Duplicate Annihilator :
    http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/index.php?action=software
But in the end, the only way to be sure is to look. AFAIK neither PS or Aperture offer anything to help.
    2) Assuming >10,000 images, is it better to have a single library; or to move between, say "work" and "personal" libraries? Is such moving between libraries readily practicable in iPhoto 06?
That's up to you, but remember that you can only have one library open at a time. My library is 10k + on an iMac G5, i gig of RAM with no difficulty. However, choosing between libraries is as simple as holding down the option (or alt) key at launch. Moving shots between libraries means either merging or exporting from one and importing to the other.
    3) Will I ultimately want to organize all of my photos into one location and then do a single, massive import into iPhoto for best library organization, or is there a better way?
Do it piecemeal. You'll learn along the way and improve your workflow as you learn. Start with the smallest batch too.
If you have a large library, I strongly suggest that you use all the filing tools that iPhoto offers: Rolls, Albums, Smart Albums, Folders and keywords. It's a database: what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.
    5) I am willing to dedicate significant time and effort now to do this correctly once, not looking for a quick-fix. I need a solid strategy to begin with. How do I get well-organized after getting out of the blocks in such a sloppy fashion? What is current "best-practice"?
See my answer to 4, above. But here's a suggestion: Organise yourself with date-based albums:
Folder: Year 2000, inside albums for Jan, Feb, Mar etc.
When you've done that, you can go back and keyword according to location, people, events so you can then quickly develop albums by date, Smart Albums by date, location and people and any compound thereof. Keywording makes searching very easy.
    6) For future security, can I rely on Retrospect or the new upcoming backup systems, or should I back up image libraries separately?
The pics are stored in the iPhoto Library Folder which is at Home/Pictures. Back up this folder and you'll preserve the pics, organisation, keywords etc. However: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
Inside the iPhoto Library Folder is the library6.iPhoto file. Make a copy of that file as protection against database corruption.
Hope that helps. If you've any more questions, post away.

  • IBooks two page spread for children's picture ebooks

    Hi,
I am creating a children's ebook for iBooks and I'd like to get the following result (taken from Peppa Pig: Tiny Creatures, published on iTunes for iBooks):
The final picture ebook should have a gutter/seam in the center, 2 page spread and pages that stack when flipped.
I saw in this post that iBooks Author can't do that and we should use use Pages instead, exporting the book as an ePub to iTunes.
But how can I do this in practice with Pages? I see that Pages doesn't export the file to ePub if certain layout features are enabled and that we should follow a strict procedure to create an ePub with Pages, as described in the "ePub Best Practices".
Now, if I follow the ePub Best Practices template, I come out with a pretty dull design, good only for novels or similar.
In particular, how can I spread a picture across two pages in Pages and get that rendered by iBooks?
For example, if I want a picture to spread across 2 pages (as shown in the picture above), do I need to place the image in a "single" landscape page in Pages, and that will be spread across 2 pages when viewed in iBooks? Or should I choose a spread layout in Pages and that will be correctly picked up by iBooks, which will also add the seam effect in the middle of the book?
    Thanks.

This isn't something you need to pull a lever to do in Pages. It is part of the default navigation in iBooks when a standard epub is displayed.
As for that 'spread' image, I suspect it is actually two...left and right.
Suggest you move to the Pages forums for details...?

  • One ruler for 3 page spread in CS 5.5

I'm missing something in CS 5.5 that I had in CS 5. Formerly, when I created three pages and set them next to one another, each had it's own ruler at the top, that is to say, the scale began at zero for each page, even though they were joined together. In CS 5.5 there is one iule for the whole 3 page spread. Is there a setting adjustment I need to make?

You haven't mentioned the OS, therefore
    For Windows
Edit-->Preferences-->Units and Increment , On the top under ruler unit settings , change the "Origin" to "Page".
    For Mac
Indesign-->Preferences-->Units and Increment , On the top under ruler unit settings , change the "Origin" to "Page".

  • Double page spread possible?

Apple claim that it is possible to create a double page spread, ie one photo across two pages. I can find no way to achieve this and internet research basically says it cannot be done. Is there an easy way to do this?

Léonie had it right the theme doesn't matter. You can put the full page template into any theme.
Depends on the theme. Some of the stock themes support this (Art Collection and Journal do for example) and some don't.
The only way to see which do is to open them in turen and look for the layout page like so:

    Hi people!

    You can't.
You can do it in Find/Change box. Set desired Frame Fitting Options in Object section and run find/change.

  • Two-page spread for non-Apple printed book

This is probably going to sound complicated:
I'm in a small program, and we want to create a yearbook, which we decided to do ourselves since there's so few of us. The book will have pages of events and groups, of course, but also "profile pages" where photos focused on a single person are included.
Two of the people in the program are married to each other. Naturally, I want their pages to be side-by-side. More than that, though, I want to have a picture right in the middle of their two pages that I got from their wedding. In the picture, they have their arms linked, so the idea is that the gutter of the book will separate the photo with the man on the left (and his "profile page" will then go on the left), and the woman on the right (with her profile page).
I hope that makes sense so far.
The question is, how do I ensure I lose as little as possible in the gutter if I'm printing with a service other than Apple? Apple's just a bit too expensive for over a dozen books, so I'm looking at mostly Inkubook or Viovio. I've already set up a custom book in Aperture with the page sizes set to 8.7" x 11.2" (to account for 0.1" trim) and an inside margin of 0.25" (for the gutter).
Viovio has a suggestion on their website that images overlapping two pages should have a portion duplicated on either page, with the size of that duplication being equal to the size of the gutter (so the right image duplicates 0.25" of the photo on the left and the left duplicates 0.25" of the photo on the right).
Does that sound like it will work? And then, should I have the same photo on both pages with a duplicated area of 0.5" (the two gutters) or 0.7" (gutters plus trims)? To that end, how do you even measure distances in Aperture - I don't seem to be able to find a ruler of any kind, which makes putting equal spaces between photos and borders on pages very hard as well.
If that doesn't make sense, which I know it may not, let me know and I'll try to clear it up...

Two page spreads are tricky and will depend on how the binding is done by the third party printer. If you look closely at the PDF file created by Aperture for books, you'll notice that the individual pages of a two page spread do not absolutely bisect the image you've aligned across the two pages. Rather, the inside binding-side edges will give you a little extra bleed, so that in binding with the book pages spread open, you'll see one continuous image without white space.
I can't say for certain because I've not used a printer other than Apple, but I would imagine that there is variance from printer to printer w/respect to this center margin.
Of course, I could be entirely wrong.

  • How do export a double page spread photo to epub and fill an ipad screen?

I'm completely new to indesign. I'm using XP and Indesign CS6.  I'm testing my epub on the new IPad 3.
I've published numerous books in print form with major publishing house in the US.  I need to quickly get a copy of the book in epub format for publication on the ipads. Maybe later for the nook, etc. Eventually I will want to design new ebooks from scratch.
We are scanning the book spreads [photos and text together a double page spread] and want to show those spreads on the ipad as a single horizontal image with no page gutter.  We've placed those jpg spreads in indesign as a double page spread. When we publish to epub it does not show as a double page spread.  It only shows up as a horizontal image on either the left or right side of a vertical book [gutter layout] view on the ipad. It never spreads out to fill the entire ipad screen.  What simple thing are we missing?
    Thanks so much
    Dwight

"The" iPad does not exist as a target, so I'm assuming you mean you export to a regular ePub and are viewing it using iBooks.
iBooks is page-agnostic. ePubs do not support the notion of "left-right" pages. In fact, iBooks is the only ePub viewer I am aware of that even tries to show "two" pages at a time.
Re-design your document so each image appears on its own page.

  • Photos across gutter

    I have a brochure - 8 pages. It's built as 2 page spreads.
There are a few instances where a photo appears across two pages.
Problem is, a spread would be page 2 on the left and page 7 on the right.
Half a photo spanning 2 and 3 needs to appear at the left edge of page 7
with half of the photo spanning 6 and 7 needs to be on page 6. This is confusing.
Is there a correct way to take a photo and split it so on one page the left side of the
photo is on the right edge of a page and the remaining right edge of the photo is on
the left edge of a completely different page?
    RM

the printer will either charge you a bundle to straighten out the mess
or return the file as unusable in most  cases.
Huh? Why in the world would a printer charge you if your files are supplied in printers' spreads? (Assuming they were set up correctly, of course.) I've never seen this before, and if I did supply printers' spreads and they tried to charge me extra to "fix" my files (or rejected them outright) I'd be looking for a new printer, FAST. I just did their work for them, after all...
I'm not saying that the OP should be working this way, just respectfully disagreeing with this specific comment.
All of that been said, you should always ask the printer what they want, and give it to them. If you're dealing with a reputable printer they should know better than you what they need from you to get the job done. I can't tell you how many times I've had customers argue with me because they want to supply me with some daft arrangement of files that we're going to have to charge to fix. We're not telling you because we want to make your life hard, we're telling you because it's reality.

  • Double page spread for photobooks

    Hi folks,
anyone know if its possible to create a photobook (soft cover style) with one photo as a double page spread?

That was done by a user in iPhoto 6 very successfully. Do a search in the iPhoto 6 book and print ordering forum. He posted screenshots of the result and they were pretty impressive.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Spreading a single form across multiple pages

I'd like to implement a single record form that spreads it's items across multiple pages for the purpose of grouping related information on each page such as "Contact Details"," Education Profile" etc. There are way too many columns for a single page.
In Oracle forms you can create a form across multiple canvases or on different tabs of a tabbed canvas. Each item has a property to position it on which canvas.
Is this possible in ApEx? I can see that transaction processing could be complex.
How do I avoid, for example, inserting the record a second time if I commit from a different page?
    Any comments appreciated.
    Paul P

Another way to do this without javascript and ajax that works pretty well is to setup a list that represents the logical "sections" and display it as a sidebar list.
Create a hidden item on the page called PX_ACTIVE_SECTION and set the visibility of each region on the page based on the value of this item. For example: :PX_ACTIVE_SECTION = 'Contact Details'. You can also have multiple regions associated with a single tab. Set the default value to whatever section you wish to display first.
    Next, set each list item to be "current" when :PX_ACTIVE_SECTION is equal to that item ('Contact Details', 'Education Profile', etc.). Also set the URL destination of each item to: javascript:doSubmit('section name');
Finally, add a branch back to the current page that sets PX_ACTIVE_SECTION to &REQUEST.. This traps the doSubmit call so you can set the hidden item. (Add a condition, if needed, to prevent this branch from executing due to other buttons and requests).
The result is that the user can switch freely between sections and save after all data is entered. The page does refresh (since it doesn't use AJAX), but if your regions aren't too big, it should be reasonable.

    View Solution.

    Hi Una.
Which type of photo book are you trying to make? For ship-to-home books, you should see a pair of facing pages on all types except layflat books, in which the image spans the entire spread.
If you're making print-at-home photo book pages, you'll see only one page at a time.
