GWIA periodically crashes on SLES

I'm running two instances of GWIA (GW8.01HP1) on SLES10SP3(64bit) (no OES). I have a secondary domain on this box for my SMTP server (GWIA instance1, port 25) and then on that same domain, I'm running a second GWIA instance with IMAP (port 110) and SMTP (port 465) over TLS. This ran fine for about six months in this configuration and I haven't made any changes to the system.
Recently in the last month or so the second (IMAP) instance of GWIA started crashing periodically with the following dump to console. When I restart it, it will run fine for a few days to a few weeks, then crash again. The other instance of GWIA keeps humming right along through this though. I searched around but didn't see any known issues similar to this.
Could this be a DB issue that a rebuild might fix?

As a first I'd suggest to update the server's GroupWise packages to 802hp2 (which was released yesterday).
Next to that I've seen some reports in the forums that seem to indicate possible IMAP issues with certain new devices using IMAP. Nothing substantial.. but maybe try to trace which new devices have been introduced to the IMAP/GWIA service?

  • Firefox 29 periodic crash

    Dear Firefox,
I have been using your product for some years and am quite happy with it. I was a long time user of FF28 and even though it has some few downsides, it was performed quite well.
I am a heavy internet user, by heavy I meant I constantly have 500-1800 tabs open at any given time and before making suggestions to my internet habit please know that there are users like me. So please refrain from saying I should fix my habit.
Before this, when using FF28, firefox would crash, sometimes. By sometimes I meant I can go 1-1.5 full day minimum without FF crashing even with 1800 tabs (I never switch my PC off, no need to.). Sometimes I get 3 full days. But after updating to FF29, firefox periodically crash. By periodic I meant it will hold at most 6-10 hours.
Before you ask, I have tried the suggestions. enabling or disabling hardware acceleration makes no difference. And mind you I have 32 gb ram. I never hit more than 12 gb usage, even with matlab running in the background, and some other applications (most of them pdfs and a couple instances of vlcs.)
So I do not think the problem is caused by memory. However I do notice that firefox seems to crash when it hits a certain amount of memory usage. Despite my huge RAM, it never utilises more than 2 gb, which is funny, because the reason I max my ram slots was so that I could use a lot of tabs.
And I don't think the problem is caused by flash either. At worst, my browser becomes unresponsive. Once I killed he process, it's back to normal. Flash never crashes my firefox by itself. And plugins? I only have a few of them, most of them disabled most of the time. (I'm a minimalist when it comes to browser.)
Does Firefox have a limit as to how much memory it can manage? Bear in mind whenever firefox crash none of my other programs were affected. If you're pointing to hardware, my PC runs very cool. It runs the latest drivers and my cpu temp never exceed 55 degrees. GPU never exceed 70. most of the time they run in the 30s range.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for a great product. But there's something that needs to be fixed with FF 29. Thanks!

Your crash signatures has a familiar face here.
    *gfxContext::PushClipsToDT(mozilla::gfx::DrawTarget
Firefox has hardware acceleration set to "on" by default, but it's still young, which means some video cards or drivers might have problems with it. You can try to disable hardware acceleration to see if that alleviates your problems.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps for Firefox version 29.0 and above:
*Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select Options for Windows or Preferences on Mac or Linux. For Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • SE 3.0 periodically crashes when performing simple operations.

During or just after many simple operations, like opening a new Data View, or dragging data from one window to another, or just moving a cursor, SE will periodically crash.  I'm running SE 3.0 on Windows XP.  My .seproj file is 9 MB.

Hi AEI, Thank you for using our discussion forums.
Red flags went off in my head when I read that your project file is 9MB.  To me that seems really big, and I would like to know if the project you are using is the source of the crashing, or is it the SE installation.  Do you experience the crash if you open a new project, or does it only happen with the large project file?  If you are only getting the crash with your project then there may be something wrong with it.
If you experience the crashes regardless of which project is loaded, then the installation may be corrupt.  You can try a few things.  First repair the Signal Express installation from add remove programs.  If you are still getting crashes, then I would suggest uninstalling all of DAQmx, and signal express and then reinstalling the latest DAQmx, which installs SE.
Just for my information, which version of DAQmx and what OS are you using.

  • Oracle installtion crashes on SLES AMD 64 ... plz help

For the past week we have have been trying to install Oracle on our servers, but have failed missrably...
The problem is the runInstaller (OUI), it crashes every time at the exact same place... we have made a strace and just about everything to figure out whats wrong...
Amongst other we have been follwing the instructions found here:
    http://www.suse.com/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/db/9iR2_sles8_amd64.html
    http://www.suse.com/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/docs/920_sles8_install.pdf
this is how we are supposed to install it:
    1) Installed SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 AMD 64 w/ service pack 3.
    2) Installed gcc_old... successfully and as described
    3) Installed devel_libs-32bit... successfully and as described
    4) Installed orarun.rpm package... successfully and as described - user "oracle" and groups "dba" & "oinstall" were created.
    5) Installed glibc-devel-32bit... successfully and as described
    6) Removed existing "binutils"-package on the system (dependant packages also removed in this process)
    7) Installed 32 bit version of "binutils" on the system ... successfully and as described
    8) performed command: export PATH=/opt/gcc295/bin:$PATH
    9) as user "oracle":
Opened terminal and wrote "linux32 bash" - a "uname -m" now returns "i686", this seems to be correct
    mounts first oracle cd-rom..
startet /media/cdrom/runInstaller (without entering the directory itself).
We now experience the following crash:
    - Everything works OK with the OUI, until the part concerning "Installation Types" - after choosing either Enterprise Ed. or Standard Ed. OUI starts to read from the cd-rom, and crashes when the progress bar reaches 66%....with no error messages.
    - We managed to see that the OUI at the above mentioned point tries to load the Java Runtime Environment. We tried to switch the JRE with a version obtained from Blackdown (specifically JRE 1.1.8 v3), which we inserted into /tmp/OraInstall....../jre just before choice of "Installation Type". Same result.
If we do a simple client installation is works fine...
We think we have tried almost every trick in the book... including trying out:
    - env. var.
    - the newest OUI (2.2.0.18) (extracted from the Oracle patch (9.2.0.4))
    - different JRE
    - not installing SP 3
    - starting from scratch many times
This is the last part of the strace:
    9961 rt_sigaction(SIGCHLD, {SIG_DFL}, {0x4002b4b0, [], 0x4000000}, 8) = 0
    9961 execve("/tmp/OraInstall2004-03-02_01-49-45PM/jre/bin/i386/native_threads/java", ["/tmp/OraInstall2004-03-02_01-49-"..., "-Doracle.installer.library_loc=/"..., ... here it continues with about 50 or more parameters...
    9961 --- SIGRTMIN (Real-time signal 0) @ 0 (0) --- ... and then this line is repeated a lot!
    This is the system:
IBM 325 dual opteron, 4 GB RAM, 2xSCSII HD's, qlogic HBA
SLES (SUSE linux enterprise edition) AMD 64
    Oracle 9i 32-bit linux version (9.2.0.1.0)
I hope somebody can help us...
    my email is: ktk(at)te.dk
    Kristian

Nope, I have heard it should work... but we cannot base our production on a developer rls. can we?
We had seen many places it should work, but it doesn't yet... I think all the installtions based on Oracle (9.2.0.1.0) are not on the SLES amd 64, but rather on a normal SLES (32bit)...
Very anoying, because of this we have wasted a whole week!
Instead we now have installed everything in 32 bit and wait for the 64 bit Oracle rls.
This has just been so frustrationg, since we have been on a tight time-frame and SUSE did indicate that it worked... I must admit that we really feel letdown in this case...
    /Kristian

  • Mail Periodically Crashing For No Apparent Reason

    Greetings,
This really isn't a major problem for me, but it shouldn't be happening, and I'd like to see if someone can help me find out why it is. Here's the deal: Starting about a month ago, Mail will just randomly quit, for no apparent reason. It doesn't happen at any specific time, or when I do something specific, etc. It just suddenly quits. Sometimes my Mac will have been running for a few days, sometimes just a few hours. Sometimes when I have several other apps running, sometimes when there's only one or two other apps running. I really can't discern any real pattern. My Mac is pretty much always on, but I usually restart it every few days, and use Cocktail to run maintenance tasks and repair permissions every other week. The first time this happened was on 10/26/08, actually, it happened twice that day. These are the dates that it has happened, to give you an idea of how often it occurs:
    10/26/08 (2x)
    10/28/08
    11/04/08
    11/10/08 (x2)
    11/12/08
    11/15/08 (x2)
    11/20/08
    11/21/08 (x2)
    11/23/08
    11/25/08
I can always relaunch it again without incident right away.
I don't know if this will be of any help, but below is the crash log from the most recent time it quit. I always install every update as soon as I receive them from Apple, but I've inadvertently cleared my installed update history, so I can't check to see if there was a specific update I installed around the time this started happening.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Again, this isn't critical, and is not inconveniencing me, it just shouldn't be happening, and I'd like to try and figure out why it is.
This is happening in my dual 2.7 G5 running 10.5.5 w/ Mail 3.5.
    Thanks in advance!
    Take care,
    ~Chris

Maybe Mail's message index is corrupt. The following procedure is safe to try. Its only deleterious effect is that windows you left open in Mail at step 1 won't reopen automatically in step 4.
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Browse to ~/Library/Mail.
    3. Move "Envelope Index" to your desktop.
    4. Launch Mail.
Mail will rebuild its index before it opens any windows. It may take a few minutes to rebuild. Be patient!
The new index is likely to be a different size than the old one, usually smaller.
Only the Message Viewer window will open--not any other windows you may have left open when Mail quit.
Be sure your mail folders are there and have their messages. They always are there, but the prudent check anyway.
Be sure you can send and receive mail. This always works, too.
After you have done the above, trash the old Envelope Index that you saved on your desktop. It is never better than the new one, and as time goes on, it becomes more and more out of synch with your mail folders, so you won't want to put it back in Library.
If Mail doesn't crash for a week or two, you probably fixed the problem. If not, you at least freed up some disk space.
Let us all know whether and how you solved your problem.

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) periodically crashes in unusual way, requires reinstall

Mac Pro (Early 2008), 2 x Intel Quad-core Xeon 3.2 GHz (8 cores), 14 GB RAM, 3 TB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 and/or ATI Radeon HD 4870), OS X Lion 10.7.4
OK, I've got a weird one here.  Every few days, my machine crashes in an unusual manner.  Examples:
    * the first time this happened, any attempt to play a video file (either from within iTunes or externally using Quicktime) would result in a blank, black video window, but I could still hear the sound from the video.  If I moved my mouse within the black window I'd get playback controls and when pressed, I could hear the audio rewind/fast forward/etc. (but of course the video window would remain black)  Also, any attempt to use screen sharing would result in a completely white window where the remote screen should be.
    * another time this happened, I would constantly get the error message that VTDecoderXPCService quit unexpectedly, even if I wasn't playing a video.  Trying the suggested fixes from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193904?start=15&tstart=0 did not fix the issue.
    * another time this happened, the machine appeared to work fine, except any attempt to access System Preferences resulted in the spinning beach ball of death and would completely lock up the machine.
In any case, rebooting the machine does not result in the problem being fixed -- in fact, it gets worse.  After I reboot, I am unable to log in to my machine at all. Either the desktop window flashes briefly but then it goes back to the login screen, or the login screen never appears.  I have tried both the "guest" account as well as a standard "test" user I set up when I first installed OS X (i.e. a "clean" user), and none of those help.
What *does* help, however, is completely reinstalling OS X Lion (including running the combo updater to get back to 10.7.4).  Once I do this, the machine becomes usable again, and I can use it error-free for a few more days - after which it fails again in some strange manner.
At first I thought my hard drive might be failing; however replacing the hard drive did not help.  I then thought that I might have a glitchy graphics card (the black video windows and the VTDecoderXPCService crashing suggested this to me).  However replacing the video card didn't help either.  (I tried another GeForce GT 120 as well as an ATI Radeon HD 4870, both of which were known to be good in other machines).  I have also tried countless times fixing permissions, clearing cache files, etc. and none of that helps.  The only thing that brings this machine back from the dead is, like I said before, reinstalling OS X - but only for a few days.
I didn't see anything out of the ordinary when checking the system log files.
In case there was some sort of hardware problem going on, I tried running Apple Hardware Test overnight in loop mode.  The hardware passed all checks.  I also tried running Memtest86+ overnight, again with no failures or errors.
The machine doesn't seem to me to run particularly hot - typically temps hover in the 40-45 C range, and can jump to 55-60 when doing heavy activity (mostly video encoding).  Voltage levels look good as well.  (I'm using iStat Menus for both the temperature and voltage readings)
I'm about at my wit's end here.  Unfortunately the machine is out of warranty (AppleCare too) and I don't really have the money to take this into a shop and get it diagnosed.  So does anyone have any ideas?

  • Periodic crashes are cryptically documented by mcelog [solved]

i have been experiencing crashes about every 16-20 hours on a box with latest x86_64 build.   booting with "nomce" does not affect the crash frequency.  /var/log/kernel.log calls this explicitly a "hardware error" but i have checked hard disks (3 raid class 1tb disks with only a few thousand hours in raid5 on a pcie-x4 raid controller for dedicated striping support), memory, power supply (brand new 800 watt pc power and cooling), motherboard (brand new asus p5n-d) and not only do quantitative tests come up solid but the system cannot be stabilized by replacing any of these components.*  the only thing i havent tried replacing is the cpu which, given the fact the MCEs are the result of a theoretically cpu-autonomous method would seem to be the most likely culprit (engineering is not my field of expertise to correction welcome here).  however, this just seems unlikely given the fact that cpus are allegedly tested before being sold.  mcelog is burning through screen after screen of output __but__ crashes are not as frequent as the hundredth or even thousandth "cache level-1 instruction-fetch error".  anyway here is what mcelog gives me for a 60-second window (*hardware details follow):

marking this thread solved.  i was leaving this open just out of curiosity but then i just decided to leave the core2 duo behind once and for all (these mce's and crashes have been a plague from the very beginning) for a phenom II x4 (3.4ghz) and a new 785g-based motherboard (gigabyte brand).  this chipset is absolutely wonderful.  it supports a wide range of cutting edge multi-core processors and the one i bought is super affordable thanks to the use of legacy/ddr2 184-pin dims.  if only gigabtye would have gone the extra mile and given me coax audio line out...

  • Windows 7 periodically crashed with my Mac Mini since 1.5 months ago.

Using Mac Mini late 2012 I7 CPU. Windows 7 Ultimate (authentic). Last version bootcamp. Have been running Windows 7 Ultimate since 2013 and was very stable and reliable. A month ago all in a sudden it crashed and not even using an image recovery could get it to work. Deleted the windows partition and re-installed Windows (a few times) using latest bootcamp drivers (3.5), but since then Windows keep crashing every 2 weeks or so.  The good thing is that using image recovery can bring it back to life (for a while). Installed programs are minimal: Office 2010 (authentic), Windows Essential 2012, Norton 360, open office, 7-zip, Photoshop element 9 (authentic), Filezilla etc..very minimal but still having the same problem. any suggestion? Anyone?

Sorry for taking so long to reply on this issue, too busy.
    It is still happening.
First confirmed that after using Windows disc image to recover, the Event Viewer is recovered to older dates so there is no record of the crash.
Strange is that when I used AHT to test the hardware (last week), there was no error at all but today there are, frequently (almost once every hour), this error in Event Viewer:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.
Looking at the Event Viewer, this error happened on 26-Feb, 28-Feb,2-Mar; I recovered the windows using 6-Mar image on 8-Mar.
Would this be the cause of the problem?

  • Firefox periodically crashes

Long time Firefox user. In the past couple of weeks, Firefox has become "laggy", sometimes displaying "not responding" when attempting to navigate to a different open tab and ultimately crashing out.
I don't have the usual suspect extensions enabled so I'm not seeing what is causing this issue.
Since 18 Jan 2014, the following crash reports have been created:

hello fredfillis, those crashes all appear to happen when your system's RAM is nearly in full use, so there might be a memory leak in firefox.

  • My first gen iPad periodically crashes when web surfing -

Is that the 5.0 "upgrade" causing the issues?

    Maybe not.
    Tap Settings > Safari
Tap Clear History then tap Clear Cookies and Data
    Then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Try Safari.

  • Firefox has been crashing periodically - the latest crash signature was nsXPConnect::ReleaseJSContext(JSContext*, int). How can I fix this?

Recently I was having trouble opening Firefox at all, so I created a new profile and transferred a number of my settings from the old profile to the new one. Now Firefox opens on the new profile, but it has been periodically crashing, usually after only a few minutes every time. The latest crash gave me this crash signature: nsXPConnect::ReleaseJSContext(JSContext*, int)

    Hello Deepa.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • URGENT - WL server crash in production - Native performance pack ??

    Hi,
We are experiencing periodic crashes in our production environment of the
nature where WLS just stops running and exits out, i.e. the JVM exits
abruptly. Many times we have seen http tunneling / socket related exception
    just before the crash occurs.
    Following is our configuration -
    WL 4.5.1 service pack 13
    JDK 1.1.7B
OS: Windows NT 4.0, sp 5
Oracle 8.1.5 with Oracle Thin drivers for JDK 1.1.7
Native IO : true i.e we are using the NT performance pack.
The latest exception that we have seen is as under -
Wed Jan 24 11:01:46 EST 2001:<E> <HTTP> Servlet request terminiated with
    RuntimeException:
    Wed Jan 24 11:01:46 EST 2001:<E> <HTTP> java.lang.NullPointerException
    at weblogic.socket.TunnelContext.getServlet(Compiled Code)
    at weblogic.socket.MuxableSocketHTTP.invokeServlet(Compiled Code)
    at weblogic.socket.MuxableSocketHTTP.execute(Compiled Code)
    at weblogic.t3.srvr.ExecuteThread.run(Compiled Code)
This seems to be a problem related to the use of performance pack and native
sockets during HTTP tunneling. In the latest crash, we got the exception
pasted above and the server crashed about 2 seconds after that. We have seen
things in the recent past where we get a HTTP tunneling related exception
and the server exits immediately afterwards.
Is anybody using the native performance packs in their production
environment on the above mentioned configuration? Has anybody seen this kind
of behaviour? Does anybody have any input on the use of native performance
pack (nativeIO) and its pitfalls in WLS 4.5.1 and sp 13 or otherwise?
Some research and investigation from our side has revealed the following
(hope it helps, but want to know more and for sure) -
In the weblogic.socket.NTSocketMuxer.java, there is an infinite loop that
tries to send HTTP tunnel keep alive messages to the clients. There it tries
to get the TunnelServlet to send the message. It gets a runtime exception
(the one in the trace above) but that is caught and the loop goes on. But on
the next pass through (in about 2 secs. or so), it makes a some native calls
(getNextSocket(), deleteIoStructure() and memcpy() which are all native
methods). Experience says that all native calls are prone to serious
    problems.
So, does anybody have any info./solution/suggestion to shed some light on
this issue. This is an urgent issue as it is affection the production
    environment.
    Thanks in advance.
    -SG

No, this is not currently available. FWIW, native io only helps when you
    have a lot of sockets.

I know about increasing thread pool size on a client and socket readers
    but
was hoping we could use native.

  • Safari crashes in pages with text field

I had the bugger of a problem with the "Your network settings have been changed by another program" bug (virus?). I solved that by doing the quick-finger return/click settings, duplicate my settings, delete Automatic, and rename my duplicate one "Automatic".
At the same time that this problem occured, I noticed Safari crashing on any page with text fields, which is just about ANY page these days. I've also noticed Skype crashes, and while searching with Spotlight, that periodically crashes also. Firefox works fine, iChat works fine.
These programs are only affected in my main account - I created a new user account and don't have the problems there. But I also don't have access to any of my important files and settings in the new account!
My question is - how can I get functionality in my main account, where all my IMPORTANT files reside?
I have done everything - repairing disk and permissions until my ears bleed, re-re-re-install and archive, virus scans (yes there are), pulling out .plists and library files, reset safari, probably did more damage than good, etc., etc., etc.
I can't figure out what I need to do and it's seriously driving me BUGGY
Any HELP would be greatly appreciated, (as I see a lot of mac problems in these forums but very few solutions).

Well, thanks for ignoring my plea for help all! I'll mark this as "ANSWERED" even though no answers or suggestions have been offered in over 3 days. I'll figure it out by myself.
The snarkiness in my initial post was because, as I peruse these forums for answers, I see a lot of threads that have no conclusion - either the person asking the question found an answer and never reported back to tell us what actually worked, or their Mac died completely, leaving them unable to post about it.
I also see a lot of uninformed posts saying things like "There are absolutely NO viruses for the Mac" or "the Mac OS is impenetrable to attacks". Try to be informed before you attempt to be helpful.
I was also quite upset that it took me 3 days trying to figure out what info was needed to access the forums here. I don't use my "Apple ID" on a daily basis, in fact, I can't recall ever using it for anything, so it was a real effort to get in here and actually ASK my question.
I've gone from being one of Apple's biggest evangelist for over 28 years, to being a real Mac-Hater - in the span of one machine. This iMac is the worst design I've ever encountered, not only due to the fact that it's a HUGE FIRE-HAZARD but I feel like I'm staring at a cubicle partition whenever I'm using it. I could never imagine Apple sticking everybody with such a badly conceived machine. Especially after all these years of faith and hope that I've placed in the company.
These new iMacs overheat and die with normal use. This is a KNOWN PROBLEM that Apple is sweeping under the rug. My machine's graphics processor fried, taking the screen and logic board with it. ALL HAD TO BE REPLACED. This is probably unrelated to my recent Safari crashes, but people should know that the life of their Macs are severely reduced (by DESIGN) these days.
So, thanks for no help everybody. I'll remember not to bother next time.

  • Solaris/JVM/JNI crashes

    Hello,
I am experiencing periodic crashes in an application while using Solaris 2.8 and JVM 1.3.0. The application is invoking multi-threaded java code from C++ and the conflict causing the crashes seems to be in how the threads are being handled. Is anybody aware of problems using Solaris 2.8 with JVM 1.3 for this purpose?
    Thanks.

By the way that presumes that your JNI code is actually robust (either long time use or extensive testin/profiling) to rule out a problem with it. If not then the problem is probably with the JNI code and has nothing to do with java.

  • Crash while merging pdf's

I have an application written in  vb.net using IAC calls to acrobat to merge a series of pdf's.  It is installed on 10 different PC's running acrobat 9.3 pro on XP pro.  On three of the PC's the application periodically crashes when it tries to open an existing pdf, or close a pddoc.  Here is the stripped down code that cycles through a list of selected pdf's in the merge.
    I have several questions:
1: why does this periodically crash on some PC's at either Doc1.Open(fp), or AcroApp.CloseAllDocs().  Is there some non-trusted function issue here?
2: is there a more efficient way of merging several pdf's into one?
            Dim AcroApp As Acrobat.CAcroApp
            Dim Doc1 As Acrobat.CAcroPDDoc
            Dim Doc2 As Acrobat.CAcroPDDoc
            AcroApp = CType(CreateObject("AcroExch.App"), Acrobat.AcroApp)
            Doc1 = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")
            Doc2 = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")
            Dim lvitem As ListViewItem
'---start with a blank pdf page any size -- it is deleted later
            Dim fp$ = Main.creatBlankPageFile("blank_legal_portrait")  <-- creates a blank page
            Dim item$
            Doc1.Open(fp)
            For Each lvitem In lwpListView.SelectedItems
'---Add the component files, these are all selected in listview
                item = lvitem.Text
                '---now add its pages
                Doc2.Open(item)
                Doc1.InsertPages(Doc1.GetNumPages - 1, Doc2, 0, Doc2.GetNumPages, 0)
                Doc2.Close()
            Next
            '---remove the initial blank page
            Doc1.DeletePages(0, 0)
            '---save the final section pdf
            Doc1.Save(1, pdfPath + "\" + secPref + section + ".pdf")
            AcroApp.CloseAllDocs()
            System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(Doc1)
            System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(Doc2)
            Doc2 = Nothing
            Doc1 = Nothing
    All comments welcome.

I finally solved the crash problem by running the "repair installation" from the acrobat help menu.
