GX623 Fan hits higher RPM only when GPU is @ 105 degrees C ?

Hi, I've been doing some tests on my GX623 laptop. All clocks are at default, my motherboard BIOS is v1.0s and am stressing the GPU with Furmark. I notice that the main fan reaches higher rpm(can't tell how many %, I'd assume 90) only when the GPU has reached an unacceptable temperature of 103-105oC(read with RivaTuner) and the CPU- 88oC(read with speedfan). First of all I'd like to ask if this is common for other GX623s? If not then maybe it's my bios ? Either way, I do not believe that the laptop has been designed this way and would appreciate any help.

Bleh, I decided to open the lappy and see what's up inside. It's 1 year old so I thought that there might be some dust in it- there was. The was so much, that the fan was unable to blow the air out at all. Anyway, I cleaned up the heatsink and then decided that it'd be best to change the thermal paste as well. As I was doing that, I noticed that the CPU's thermal paste was rock-hard, there was no way that was conducting heat properly. Anyway, after having replaced all the thermal paste (with some not-so-great Spire Silvergrease pro) and having cleaned up the heatsink and fan, I decided to do some testing. Temperatures after stressing with Prime 95 and Furmark for 30 minutes:  (RivaTuner)GPU:80oC     (SpeedFan)CPU with turbo on:   core1: 88oC   core2: 85oC. Now, I haven't measured the CPU temperature before, but this seems a bit on the high side... Has any other GX623 owner done CPU heat measurements with turbo on ?

  • Fans at high rpm in 10.6; OK in 10.5

I have a 3,1 Macbook Pro, with 2 partitions--my older 10.5 partition and the Snow Leopard partition I installed 6 months ago. When I ran the 10.6.7 update, I noticed the fans running high, frequently. I installed SMC Pro to check--and waking the computer from sleep, with no apps running, the temp will climb from in the 40s centigrade to 70, and the fans start blasting at 6000 rpm. The same test if I boot into the 10.5 partition is fine--the fans mosey along at 2000 rpm and the temp never gets above 50.
I have reset the SMC several times, zapping the PRAM after. No change.
Right now I have Firefox and Activity Monitor running, with Firefox maxing out at about 10% CPU usage, and I'm at 71 degrees and 6000 rpm.
       Any thoughts? Very aggravated.
    TIA
    --tom

FWIW--narrowing things down--did a re-install of 10.6 and the fans are back to normal--I am not ready to re-update to 10.6.7 yet--but the problem does indded seem to lie between 10.6.5 and 10.6.7

  • Router Fan Slow....other fan at high rpm

    Dear Xperts...
One of my Cisco router 2951 started making high noise from fan...after "show Log " it was found that one fan is at low rpm and other at high rpm. Ultimately the router after some time was not geting powered on. Another router was installed and was found that it was giving some burning smell.....Y this is happening....for safety purpose router is switched off..please help

Have you checked the vents at the back to make sure they aren't blocked?
If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

  • Is it okay to leave fan at high RPM?

I just got my 2Ghrz Mac Book and noticed that usually it gets pretty hot. Now that you can control fan speed, is it okay to leave the fan at 5K RPM throughout the time the laptop is being used? I use it maybe 1-2 hours a day...And also, I remember on the older iBooks there was a connector problem with the LCD and mother board which would get worst the more you'd open and close the laptop. Has that been resolved in the new Mac Book? I open/close it once or twice a day, and don't want it to break.

The opening and closing twice a day should not be a problem at all.
If you just got it, it may still be indexing, creating some extra heat. Running the fan is certainly better than not running it.
    Welcome to the Discussions btw!

  • Intel xServe fans run at max only when connected to Netgear JGS524 switch

The fans will slowly ramp up to 11k - 16k rpm when either one (or both) of the network connections are plugged into the NETGEAR JGS524 switch. When unplugged, the fans will reduce to a normal 6k - 7k rpm. This wasn't an issue before the server was upgraded to Leopard server from Tiger server.
Swapped out the Ethernet cables, swapped out the switch with a brand new one, removed all other connections from switch--no dice. The server can be connected directly to a NETGEAR FVS318 router with no problem and the fans will run normally.
Does anyone know of any firmware issues or software issues--or any other issues--that affect Leopard server and NETGEAR JGS524?

Swapping the Netgear switch out for a different brand would be something to try. I can't do that right now, but it's on the list.
The temporary solution is to leave the connections set to 100BaseTX to keep the fans in check.
I tried to update the firmware, but it won't update to either version I have.
The machine is an xServe (Late 2006). It's firmware is at XS11.0080.B03 --which I can find no information about whatsoever.
The updater packages for EFI 1.0 and 1.1 complain: 'Alert This computer does not need this update.' Also, the 'xServe EFI Firmware Update.app' is not in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder as the firmware installation instructions on Apple's site mention. Is this an issue? Or do the EFI firmware packages contain the necessary installer?
The latest firmware for any Intel xServe is XS11.0080.B06 (EFI 1.1)--for Early 2008 models. The only previous update I can find is XS11.0080.B01 (EFI 1.0)--for Late 2006. But that's actually lower than what I have.
This site show the only info I can find about xServe EFI firmware: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Has anyone ever heard of the XS11.0080.B03 firmware? Or know how I can force my machine to update or revert the firmware?

  • Fans at high speed even when idle

The fans on my iMac have been running at high speed all the time for a few weeks. I don't know why: I've installed no new software except for system updates. The fans used to be almost silent.
XResourceGraph records the CPU temperature in the high 60s (Celsius) and CPU fan speeds of 5500-6000. The fan speed stays around here most of the time (regardless of how many applications are running - even if I'm running none at all!), and never drops below about 3500.
    I've tried:
    a) resetting SMU
    b) resetting the PRAM
    c) vacuuming the inside of the iMac
... all to no avail. Any further suggestions please?
    Thanks in advance!
    iMac G5 Rev B   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

System updates can cause problems like yours, since you have done the most obvious things, I would suggest reapplying the latest update as a 10.4.9 combo updater. Please let us know if that helped,

  • Quad G5 - Fans running 3000 rpm, CPU B overheats to 100 degrees

This machine is now about 2.5 years old, and the fan noise has got louder since I bought it. The last few days, the fans have been blaring away at full speed. I installed Temperature Monitor, then to get better info, iStat. Right now, with only one Safari window open, CPU A is showing two temperatures below 35 degrees centigrade. B is hovering around the 60 mark, i.e. double. The CPU is reporting 97% idle.
I opened the case and cleared out all the dust which had accumulated inside. There was a fair bit. I generally open the box every 3 months and clear out. This didn't make any difference whatsoever.
Thsi afternoon, things got worse. The system began going to sleep while I was using it. I checked the logs, and they were showing CPU B hitting 99 degrees centigrade and forcing sleep in order to save itself.
Up until last week, I had the performance of this box set to Highest in energy saver, and never turned it off -- only rebooting for the rare crashes (like 3 a year, at most) and software updates. After seeing my most recent electric bill, I changed my settings to Automatic and set the Mac to witch off at midnight and start up at 8am. Apart from that there has be no change in usage, nor have I installed any new software or hardware.
Following the forced sleep, which happened this afternoon, I have set performance to Reduced, disabled the screen saver, told to computer to auto sleep after 30 mins inactivity, and sleep the display after 15 mins. I have re-enabled the setting to sleep hard disks when possible. I even used the processor pane from CHUD to disable cores 3 and 4, but this seemed to do very little for the temperature of CPU B, so that's been re-enabled.
Following other advice, I have rest the PRAM and NVRAM, reset the SMU, and removed every device from USB and FireWire bar the keyboard, mouse and monitor. I ran the Hardware Test in full. It took over three hours but reported everything as OK, RAM, Logic Board and GPU. Disk Utility verified both hard drives as fine.
I am dreading hearing that CPU B is failing, and find it hard to believe a machine less than three years old, sold as a professional workstation, which cost me £3,000 and took me two years of a very expensive loan to pay off, would have this kind of catastrophic failure.
Is this going to cost me a lot? Have I just been taught the hard lesson that you don't get what you pay for anymore? I love my Mac, but if it costs me the price of a new PC to replace a part, I'd be very upset.
Can someone recommend any further diagnostics or a possible explanation and solution? Do I just need to bite the bullet and get to the local Apple Centre?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

That's ok, and reasonable as well. Does this link list any Apple stores near you:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/storelist/
Remember, it's these stores that have the free "genius" people. My local store ran the thermal calibration test for free. And I don't think it would be too much for them to get under that cover and check for leaks.
I'm sorry, in the above posts I mentioned Temperature Monitor when I should have said, Hardware Monitor. Both created by the same genius but a lot more info.
And I'm sorry, I don't know about the diagnostic disk. Not really sure what it is, you mean the disk that was supposed to come with your Mac or an Apple Authorized repairers tool? Pretty cool if you have one of those. But I think the Thermal Calibration is on a disk of its own. I think.
Alan, this is heresy, but is there any reason you have to use a Mac? Do you have certain or large amounts of Apple software you need to use on your machine? I do, plus I still use classic apps, so that's why I personally would invest in keeping my G5 going.
I don't blame you or the other poster for feeling as you do. It's not right that we should have to put up so much money for something that fails in just a few years. It's odd, but I still have a PM8500 and a G4 that still work flawlessly. Seems the better the technology the less reliable it becomes. We'll see how the MacPros fair. The whole thing reminds me of the original movie, "Failsafe". One technical glitch and Ka-bam.
    Good luck

  • Macbook fan running at high rpm when doing nothing

My macbook a1181's fan is always running at a high rpm and a can't figure out why. I already checked the activity monitor, made sure there was no documents waiting to be printed (i have had this problem in the past), and I removed and cleaned the fan and vents. Could os x 10.7.5 be part of the problem? I had absoutly no issues with 10.6.8.

Check your activity monitor. Sounds like you have a program running in the back ground your not aware of.
You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.

  • Fan RPM 6000+ and Temp. 46 degrees when VMware runs bootcamp XP

Is this normal for MacBooks to heat up to 46 degrees and make the fan go 6000+ rpm when vmware is running xp from the bootcamp partition?
    Neerav

Agree with etresoft. In Windows open Task Manager (press CTRLALTDEL or CTRLSHIFTESC) to see what, if any processes are running abnormally high.
As far as the fan running at 5000+ RPM that is normal for me too. For whatever reason Mac OSX & Flash don't like each other. I've seen this on my old laptop that I have openSolaris on. If I had to guess, I think its because Adobe hasn't optimized the code for UNIX systems like it has for Windows. So as much as I like Adobe I have to agree with Steve Jobs that Flash is an aging technology. I hope Apple, more companies, & more websites goes with HTML5 or Silverlight in the future.

  • IMAC G5 fans running at high RPM

    Hello,
I have a 20" G5 iMac and just had the motherboard replaced under warranty. Since the replacement my fans will start to run at very high rpm's fr no reason. It will happen even when the computer is not being used and no applications are running. It is currently at:
    CPU 122 degrees
    CPU fan 2996 rpm
    HD 124 degrees
    HD fan 4178 rpm
    System fan 3098 rpm
I have called applecare and they had me do several resets which seemed to help for about 1 hour and then the fans have ramped up and not gone down in the past hour. This last time I was watching TV and heard a noise from the computer and low and behold it was the fans. Nobody was working on the computer and all apps were closed. I bought this computer in September 2005 and have had 2 lcd's replaced and a logic board replaced. I am getting frustrated with this, my first, Apple computer. Does anyone have an idea of why the fans are running so high? I never had a problem like this with my old logic board.

Have you looked in Activity Monitor to see if any applications are causing the fans to run? Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.

  • Drive bay fans high rpm and whine.

High RPMs and a whining noise (i.e. fan noise) with iStat Pro widget displaying high (2,700+ rpms) for my drive bay.
I see that on my G5 one of the fans is located so that I can not blast it with canned air so as to rid it of dust build up... which is probably why there is a low decibel but high pitched noise when the drive bay fans rev up.
Any ideas on how to get to it without having to completely take my tower apart?
I've had my Energy system preference set to 'Highest' for a long time (since I read that overall this can prevent fan rpms from going extremely high) and it seems to have been okay.
But I'm guessing that over the years this one fan... which can not be blown off... has accumulated lots of dust that is causing the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    "I've tried to monitor Console....."
Activity Monitor (AM--in Applications > Utilities) is the better reporter of what's causing excessive fan activity as it calculates the CPU usage of each process. If you have not launched AM before, its default settings will not show enough detail to help. However, all you need to do to get a full picture of the load on your processor is to change AM's "Show" option from "My Processes" to "All Processes." Once changed, that setting is retained. Looks like this:
Others are reporting heating issues and short battery runtime after upgrading to 10.6.8. They all had Parallels emulation software installed. If you use Parallels, see this:
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/111541
    It could be your culprit.

  • Mac Mini fan on high, UI frozen. Had to shut it off. Any way to tell what the problem was when I boot it back up?

I leave my Mac Mini on constantly as a HTPC. I came home after being at work all day to find the fan on high and the lock screen incredibly sluggish. I have no idea how long it was like that, it's never done anything like it before. I couldn't login because it was too slow, I had to force it to shut off. Is there any way to see what it could've been when I boot it up, such as log files or something like that? I was hoping to get in to see top or the activity monitor but as I said earlier, I wasn't able to log in.

I had TeamViewer 9 installed. The Preferences window that contained the Uninstall button would not open so I just moved the .app to the trash. Last night I:
Installed TeamViewer 10 as it was the latest version, I figured I had that one previously
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
Realized from the /private/var/db/receipts (I think) entries that I had TV9 installed previously, not 10
    Installed TeamViewer 9
Tried to uninstall TV9, found the broken preferences pane and remembered why I just deleted it in the first place
    Upgraded it to TV10
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
I'll check on it tonight, but I think it's okay. I want to do a grep -r -i "teamviewer" / when I get back to see if anything is left behind.

  • IMac fan runs a High RPM and screen goes black after 10-15 min

    20" iMac 2.66 purchased April 2008.
I know this has asked elsewhere most likely but I thought I would start fresh.
A few weeks ago my cooling fan started running at high RPM, with really no reason (sitting idle with no applications running). Less than a week later my screen would go black about 10-15 minutes after startup (computer stays on and fan still running). If I re-boot the black screen just appears more frequently (maybe two minutes sooner each time)
Of course I am just outside of my Applecare coverage window!
Also, I have a MBP and would like to access my iMac hard drive. I can't remember what commands to push to access another Macs hard drive.
Thanks for your thoughts and help!
    Mike

I think you are referring to Target Disk Mode.

  • Fan running high when using word

never had trouble with the fan but i recently started using word more often which causes the fan to run at high rpms - i know it´s usually around 1800, word causes it to be around 6200 rpm.
this is quite annoying since it lasts as long as i´m using word. anyone knowing a solution?

I use the PPC version 10.0.0 of Word and it runs cool. Use Activity Monitor to see how much CPU % Word is using. Mine uses in the single digit percentage.
I wonder if there is something in Word's Preferences that is turn ON that could be turned OFF, something on the order of a virus checker or some other utility that is unnecessary, which is consuming a lot of power? I really have no better idea than that but thought I would through it out since it would not hurt to look and see if there is something suspicious in Prefs.
