[GX740] Installing ATI drivers

I wanted to install the latest drivers for my mobile HD Radeon 5870 videocard, so I went to ATI.com and downloaded the ones suited for my videocard. A friend told me I should check the MSI website for the drivers they recommend for my videocard, so I downloaded that one as well.
Now this is what I noticed at both drivers:
ATI.com drivers:
10-7_mobility_vista_win7_32-64_ccc.exe
Size:
68.9MB
Version:
v10.7
MSI.com drivers:
gx740_hd5870_8.732.0.0000_7x00.zip
Size:
197MB (!???)
Version:
- Why is the one from MSI nearly 3 times the size of ATI's driver?
- Do the ATI ones lack functionality compared to the one from MSI?
- Is it possible at all to install the ATI ones? (In case there are newer versions)
A fast reply is appreciated, I'm in need of these drivers!

My recommendation would be to use the drivers supplied by MSI and if you have a problem with a particular game then first look for a game patch, otherwise install the latest drivers from the ATi website.
I don't know why the drivers from the MSI site are bigger; perhaps utilities are bundled with the download or something. Compare the two if you want. The drivers from the ATi website certainly won't perform worse at any rate.
I see, and I get your point. But since I'm a power user I want to run the latest drivers to get the most out of my hardware. Newer drivers usually means performance increases plus they fix issues from previous drivers, who doesn't want those?

And that game is?
Well the first game I tried to play on this laptop: Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2 - Jedi Outcast (Multiplayer). It's a really old game but it used to work just fine on my old computer, and now it doesn't even start nor shows an error. But apart from that, newer drivers mostly fix issues from previous drivers plus give performance increases which lets games run smoother. Why shouldn't I want that? :P I simply want to get the best out of my hardware, at any time or moment.

  • Should I use the default video drivers or should I install ATI drivers?

I have a macbook pro with the ATI card in it. Should I download and use the ATI drivers that they provide on their website? Am I going to see benefits or should I stick with the drivers in the recent bootcamp update?
    thanks

any reason why not using ATI drivers? When I play a game it says the driver it outdated (steam games for example), installing ATI drivers resolves this problem.
Not that I play a lot of games on my laptop, but I'm just thinking maybe I'll get better performance with ATI drivers with other 3D software (I use 3ds max a lot, and others).

  • How to Install ATI drivers and apps using MDT 2010

Hi, I am a greenhand for the Windows7 deployment via MDT.
I am currently facing an issue, I downloaded the ATI drivers from Dell Offical website (I am using Dell laptop), they I extracted the driver files using the 7zip, then imported the files to the MDT Out-of-box drivers, but this could only import the driver files,
for the application, MDT couldnot import.
Is there anyway to import the both Drivers and App of the ATI together to MDT, thus when deploying the windows, the drivers and app of ATI can be installed along with the Windows OS.
Appreciate your comments/suggestions. thanks in advance.

  • Mplayer and VirtualBox error after installing ATI Drivers

I recently switched from the Open Source drivers for my ATI video card.  Since that time some programs are refusing to load.
I switched to the Catalyst repository to install the new drivers for my card.
The specific error message I get when running the mplayer in the terminal is
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libdirectfb-1.4.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    the message for VirtualBox is
VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: libdirectfb-1.4.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So far only 2 programs have been giving me this error are mplayer and VirtualBox.
I have tried reinstalling directfb and mplayer, but this doesn't fix things.
I have run ldd `which mplayer` and the following is missing
    libdirectfb-1.4.so.0 => not found
    libfusion-1.4.so.0 => not found
    libdirect-1.4.so.0 => not found
    I am running 64bit Arch.
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks

After running that, I discovered that sdl needed to be rebuilt. Once I did that, everything works fine.

  • Testing: ATI drivers for xorg7 - packages renamed.

I've just uploaded a new set of ati drivers *hopefully* compatible with xorg7, to testing. It's impossible for me to test, I havn't got an ATI card, so your feedback is vital.
What's also important about this is that they use a new naming setup.
The userspace tools and xorg stuff are in 'ati-drivers',
The kernel modules in ati-drivers-arch, and ati-drivers-archck.
So to install ati drivers, you are best to pacman -S ati-drivers-kernel, where kernel is your kernel. This will bring in ati-drivers too.
After installing, it is important that you make a symlink from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules to /usr/lib/xorg/modules, othweise direct rendering will not work.
    Thankyou for your patience.

  • How can i install ati radeon 9600 pro

    i install kernel-2.6.3 and xfree86-4.4.0, i neet install ati-drivers?
because of i run xf86config seting can't OK!

I believe you should get basic functionality using the "ati" driver from XFree86 - not "radeon".  I know the XFree86 driver in 4.3.99 works with a Radeon 9600, so I suppose 4.4.0 will work too.
However, you will need to install the proper ATI drivers if you wish to obtain full performance from your card.

  • Ati-drivers-arch. ATI for stock kernel.

Despite the fact I love everyone using my ArchCK because it has ATI drivers, ATI drivers now work on the stock kernel too.
S1G1 made a package and put it in the AUR, which I have since adopted and put into community.
Over the next few days as the mirrors sync, you will be able to get the ati driver for the vanilla kernel, by installing, 'ati-drivers-arch' from community.

Setup is the same as with initrd, except you edit /etc/mkinitramfs.conf and run mkinitramfs auto
good to know.. but I'd need the archck kernel on an install cd for that, wouldn't I? Which it normally isn't afaik. Or does the stock one support initrd and initramfs?

its probably because there was some chatter that you have to have a patched xorg-server since xorg upgraded to 1.8. Go through the AMD/ATI Bar and Grill thread (last few pages) to see if a solution is available. But that could be old news.
Which version of catalyst drivers are you using?

  • G565 refuses to install latest ATI Drivers :(

My G565 have the integrated Radeon HD 4270 graphics accelerator.
I use EXACTLY the correct drivers from AMD by selecting the driver from this page:
    http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx
For some reason it does install the new Catalyst Control Center just fine, however it wont install the new display driver, it stays at the old 8.760.0.0 from 2010-07-19... I've even ran driversweeper and done complete uninstalls...
Why does it refuse to install?? Are we reallly stuck at using the latest driver from Lenovo which is outdated???

I want the greatly improved catalyst control center + some performance improvements and fixes.
One is that graphics acceleration in FF is improved, also apparently  sometimes FF4-5.x caused the GPU to run very hot in earlier driver releases.
I would have hoped for some serious help here  but I guess I have to find some registry hack or another way to install new AMD/ATI drivers from now on...
Lenove must've blocked it from completely installing... I can't see why since it's just the pretty common HD 4270 (4200 series) onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip in the RS880M Chipset!!
FULLY supported by the drivers from AMD!

  • Ati drivers no longer work after upgrade

I was trying to mount a vfat partition the other day, to copy files from a friends USB drive. It would not mount no matter what I did. I had found out that for some reason, the last kernel that I updated to did not have the proper character set enabled in it before it was compiled. I noticed there was a new kernel, and decided what the heck, and gave it the old pacman -Syu
I rebooted after this only to find my x server now crashes. So I did some research and it seems that there is a lot of complaints about this new xorg 1.5. So I thought about downgrading, but decided against it. I did a hwd -x, and copied over the xorg.conf.vesa, and restarted X. It worked. I then tried with the ati driver and it doesnt work.
So I am using x, with the vesa driver. And I can view videos (these were the files I wanted to copy from my friends USB drive. Although I can now mount it, and have copied them fine.)

I am not impressed by the update problems I have been having recently. I've been using arch for a while now, and everything has gone smooth exept for the last 2 months, I have had about 5 seperate issues. Not sure if im the only one feeling this. Might be my set up who knows.

The xorg.conf.ati was renamed to xorg.conf. I had named it back when it didnt work. And renamed xorg.conf.vesa to xorg.conf to have a usable x session.
Here is my output for Xorg.0.log

    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
I have tried to remove the xorg.conf and retry the x server. It opens but I have no keyboard or mouse control and the resolution is incredibly small (640.480?). I can not log in, or change to any tty because of a lack of keyboard, and I am stuck rebooting my computer, which results in a fsck and all that good stuff.
As for the gnome-terminal problem, I managed t get around it by removing the package, updating my system, and reinstalling gnome-terminal. I wanted to try that since there were new ATI drivers waiting to be installed. But the new ATI drivers do not seem to do me justice. :S
And sorry for not getting back right away. I was just using the VESA drivers to get me by. I had a lot of work to do before the holidays. And now im back on it.

  • How to How to install ATI Radeon HD2600 driver on bootcamp 3.0 windows 7 partition w/black screen problem

Ok....so i've posted this question in a different way, and i gotten several "scratch the surface" answers from people just saying to install "Ati catalyst", or insert the os x dvd and run set up.exe, and update  to boot camp 3.1 or 3.2...while these all seem like great suggestions, I am finding myself needing more specific direction or "hand holding" so to speak.....here is the MAIN problem...
    The Background/history
I used boot camp (3.0, and i found updates for 3.1 for imac and for windows, but can't find for mac pro, AND they all are ".exe" files which run on windows..which as you'll see is the big part of my problem...So I recently updated my mac pro (with the ATI Radeon HD2600 graphic PCIe card with 10.6.7 from 10.5.8.  I created a single partitioned drive to install windows 7 professional 64 bit.  The download software function didn't work (Thanks, APPLE for that poor level of support) so have to select the option that i have already downloaded, or have other media with the drivers already on it....i restarted with the windows 7 disk in....
The installation of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
So the installation of windows 7 seemed to go flawlessly, was able to use my existing 23" hd apple cinema display (so somehow it has drivers that work with the graphics card, or maybe the motherboard's on board video components) and i select english, and install now, custom, blah, blah, blah...installation causes a few reboots, then restarts ultimately back in os x since that is the default boot os i use on this desk top and have to do the "opt" button to select booting in windows....so when i try restarting in windows, now using the actual boot drive on which i am installing it, it ran through another reboot or two, but then after that, my display goes black....  in the communities, the solution sounds super simple... "go download the ATI catalyst for the black screen problem....windows 7 doesn't have device drivers that work with the ATI radeon hd2600...no problem, just go download and install...."
The problem, re-emphasized :  I cannot even finish the install for windows, because of this driver problem....i cannot see anything....I have tried to reboot in safe mode, and that then seems to invoke whatever basic drivers that do work, likely through the motherboards onboard video vs the actual graphic card, and the screen works and says that it's wanting to complete the installation, so i'm thinking awesome this is gonna work....and then.. "windows installation was not completed and cannot be completed in SAFE MODE, need to restart, blah, blah, blah" pops up...and forces reboot...so Safe Mode allows me to see, but won't allow me to finish the install of windows 7...and without completing the install i can't run (ranther I DONT KNOW HOW TO) any of the various .exe files everyone is telling me are the solutions to my problem...like update 3.1 and 3.2 bootcamp...they're all .exe files?  not sure why, because bootcamp runs in 10.6.7 i thought, but whatever...it needs running Windows to execute...then the ATI radeon hd2600 driver for windows 7 that i downloaded from the site has an installation program that is an .exe file, which needs windows to run...  Does this make sense, why i can't just use these fixes, that seem to be the only fixes out there....so can someone school me step by step here (not just the highlights) of how to update bootcamp, and how to install the ati radeon driver  without having been able to complete the windows 7 installation because the monitor goes and stays black????
This is so very frustrating for the record...and any substantial help "not just go download this..." would be immensely appreciated.
Some other things i've been told to try that i've tried and nothing seems to happen as i'm told it will....
---I've been told to install the osx dvd and run "setup.exe"  - AGAIN...it's an exe file...and 2 - when i put in the os x file it just wants to re install 10.6...so need more help if this is even a real solution to understand how to make it work...
---I've been told to update boot camp to 3.1 and/or 3.2 from 3.0, using Apple Software Update....Well, my software update is saying everything is up to date and there is nothing new to download at all, and when i reverify the bootcamp version it is still only 3.0.2...and again downloading the updates from www.apple.com/support/  for 3.1 and 3.2...all of those are .exe files...need windows to run them...again, refer to the problem described in detail above...
---I've been referred to the black screen on imac early 2011 thread saying it should fix my problem...and reading it it SEEMED like the most promising resolution...it involves creating a boot flash drive for windows 7 and an xml file that sets the imac drivers to auto install during the windows installation..and it got me farther than anything else..but still ultimately ended up in the darned black screen...my assumption is that it's because it's for imac and not mac pro so not ati-radeon specific drivers....ok....that's enough..please...anyone who thinks they can help...your help is desperately needed...thanks so much in advance!

hey Hatter, thanks so much for getting back...so just to be super clear...is there no way to install the drivers using an exe file given my current state? no way to do it with command prompt or something?  if can make work with existing card, i'd prefer it...now when you say it's 'toast' how do you mean?  it works well with the os x partitions and always has...so i'm not sure i follow, just want to be clear...
Now to your point of starting with only the one drive installed...so i would put that bootcamp drive in bay 1 and disconnect the rest...i'm not totally sure what you're suggesting the effect should be of doing this?  just that i'm just installing windows without the bootcamp deal...but if windows 7 doesn't support the ati radeon hd2600, it still will go black screen no? or you're saying it will run video through the motherboard if it's the only bootdrive, and will run all the way through the windows install without trying to switch over to the hd2600?  (slrry flr these questions..just really want to make sure i understand what you're telling me..thanks so much for your patience and help by the way...it's very greatly appreciated...your support is priceless!
So now, assuming none of the above is possible...referring now to the ati 5770 that you referred to...you mention it works with 10.6 well, and that windows 7 supports it ...2 questions on that
         1) Windows 7 supports" meaning, out of the box windows 7 supports it? or will i have to install drivers still through some update, because again, if that's how i have to do it, then won't work, cuz can't start windows to see anything to install any drivers or run any thing at all...so it would have to just work with initial installation.
2)hardware wise for my Mac Pro 3,1...intel dual quad core xeon, blah blah....will this card work? it's a PCIe and should fit on my board no prob, etc?

  • Open ATI Drivers - Unable to initialise screen in normal boot

    Hi,
I've been having a bunch of trouble with my graphics card since installing a Radeon HD 6900 card. Neither the Catalyst driver or the Xorg Open ATI driver currently work. I've abbandoned the Catalyst drivers as just unwilling to work with Gnome 3 or any other compositing WM. So i've started up a fresh install of Arch using the Xorg Open ATI drivers.
    local/xf86-video-ati 1:6.14.6-1
    local/xorg-server 1.12.2-1
What i'm finding is weird, the Open ATI drivers fail to load X as they have for quite some time (displaying a weird garbled screen that has elements of colour from the login screen but is mostly garbage, in the latest version I can actually see the tail of the mouse stuck at the top of the screen and moving it across to the far right gives me the bottom few pixels of the mouse repeated in vertical lines all over the rest of the screen). However if I boot into failsafe mode it appears to load X normally. From what I can tell of the Xorg.0.log for both sessions I think it's loading the Xorg drivers in both settings but I'm not sure.

  • Serious W7 Bug - ALL ATi Drivers for Thinkpads /w Switchable Graphics Technology bricks OS.

Alas, i have found one serious bug for my Thinkpad.
It comes with Switchable Graphics Card Technology, with an Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATi Mobility Radeon 3470 paired together.
I have initially installed Pre-RTM 7260(ok, i know it's leaked), and faced the problem for the first time after installing the ATi drivers from either Windows Update OR ATi's website. However i have downgraded back to Release Candidate as there was stability issues with EXPLORER.exe
Anyway, surprising what i've though to be a show-stopper bug was also present in RC 7100. After installing(or rather, midway through) the driver installation, the screen blinks for a moment and after that, Explorer.exe is nowhere to be found with only wallpaper. OS seems to be bricked as restart does nothing. Only a System Restore prior to installation would solve the issue.
After diagnosing the problem, i have found the issue to be with the Switchable Graphics Card system. In BIOS, it was set to Swithable Graphics, with OS Detection set to Enabled, Thinkpad LCD Display(for output). I tried to set the graphics to either Discrete(ATi) or Integrated(Intel) but when i booted the system up it was in SVGA resolution and DXDIAG stating no graphics found. When it was in Discrete, i tried to install the ATi drivers once again, and although installation was successful, after restarting the same thing happened.
To be fair, i have repeated the drivers installation EXACTLY the same for both Windows 7 Builds(7100 RC and 7260 Pre-RTM) and the same problem occured. I have also tried to install the ATi drivers before the Intel Chipset(and basically the rest) and it's the same nevertheless.
I believe that this is a serious issue with Switchable Graphics Technology for Windows 7 Beta, since we have to make do with the generic Microsoft display adapter alone. I hope Lenovo engineers can put priority a solution for this as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties.
When I installed RC1 (build 7100), it came with a built-in driver that worked just fine for the discrete graphics in my W500.
A few weeks later, I installed the current release Vista driver for integrated graphics (this one) and it is working just fine as well.  Installing the Lenovo driver gave me the ATI control panel (not sure what use that is), otherwise, it didn't affect performance either way.
I have switchable graphics turned off in the BIOS, OS detection turned off, and have the machine set to use the discrete graphics only.  I think it would be a bit much to expect either Microsoft or Lenovo to support the switchable graphics this early in the development of Windows 7.  Besides, the discrete graphics doesn't eat up the battery that much - I still get 3 hours of battery life, which is sufficient for my needs.
Maybe try turning switchable graphics and switchable graphics detection off in your BIOS, that might get you running again.
