H.264, distribution only?

I am working with clients who need videos sent to them in H.264 codec. I have read that this is distribution only and not used for editing. so does this mean that you cannot set Final Cut to capture with this codec, since it seems to be only for export? I did notice it's not an option in the log and capture window. I am using Final Cut Pro 6/Studio 2. Thanks.

Yes - you are right - you do not edit in H.264, it is a delivery codec.
I have clients who want to see videos (approval copies) all the time. I post to them in H.264, but I edit in the codec appropriate to the project - ProRes mostly nowadays...

Strange Display of h.264 - but only outside of QT Player

Hi all
has anybody seen anything like this before? The first place I noticed the distorted H.264 Video was on a Apple Page trying to watch the iPhone Commercial last year. it looks like this:

Now, today I needed to recompress a H.264 Movie with Compressor. The Same Movie looks like this in Quicktime Player (Its a bad resolution, but still renders ok)

How can it be that Quicktime uses two different Ways of displaying the same movie???
I uninstalled Perian, with no difference. Other then that, i have DivX, FLV and BlackMagic plus all the FinalCut STudio Codecs installed.... anybody any ideas?

We had also another problem with this stream previously. Maybe it is related to this one.
The problem was that QT 7.5.5. QT expected the number of reference frames to be set to 2 even if there is actually one reference frame only (but composed of two half-frames). This bug caused that the lower half of the image has not been painted correctly and also caused a memory leak and crash of QT.
It seems to be fixed now in QT 7.6 - memory consumption seems to be stable, but the second half of the reference frame is still not stored/reused for P-slice rendering.

H.264 file only imports the audio

Hi I am trying to import a H.264 file into my HD PaL studio pro project and all that seems to be happening is the audio is imported but not the movie

Sam, I have just recently started using DVD Studio (in fact, this is my very first time), and I am having the same problem as you, the only difference being that it is an HD NTSC project instead of PAL. I was wondering if you have found a solution for the problem yet, or if maybe someone else out there reading this would be able to help?

Unexpected error (0xE8000001) with Distribution ONLY

My app works on device if I build it with Developer credentials
If I switch to Distribution configuration it gives me 0xE8000001
I see two provision files in Organazer but one of them (distribution) is disable. So it was never installed on device.
Is it OK or I should try to install it on device somehow?

I have the same question. It works fine in debug and release. It gets this error in distribution. Does that matter? It seems like I shouldn't be aloud to distribute it to my device yet, though I can debug and test. It just seems like it's a nasty error message. The documents say to build the application when in distribution, but not to use build in go. So, is this a problem or not? It seems like it isn't, but I'm not sure.

KE28 Top-down distribution for only part of the Value Field

Hi Experts,
We have a situation where we will make manual postings in CO-PA through KE21N. Part of this postings will be at the lowest detailed level and part will be for a more summarized level od characteristics. All the postings will flow to the same value field.
We need to make a top-down distribution only for the postings that were made in a summarized level, because the other postings already have the details that we need.
Is it possible?

Please note that :-
you can not distribute to a characteristic that already contains a
value. Please see note 77476. If you want to distribute to eg.
profit center, then the characteristic must be initial (in the data
to be distributed).
In the case where the log showed "number of receivers" but no line
written is a common problem in transaction KE28 logged by customers.
One example is that, if the amount of line items is 0.00 for all the
receivers, no line item will be written.
No values in reference data:
If there are no values in reference data for some segments (see the
log). No records are posted (segments which were distributed, but
their value is zero i.e. there is no value to be distributed, are not
posted).
No initial values in the distribution level (ie. # - non assigned)
in each of the characteristics in distribution level.

Cost distribution SRM to R/3 - based on VALUE

Hi all,
We are working on SRM 5.0 and R/3 4.7.,ECS
In shopping cart when the cost dsitirbution is sleected as "VALUE",when the corresponding SRM PO replicates to R/3,the cost distribution always changes to percentage/quantity....Why is that R/3 system recognises the cost distribution only for quantity or percentage???
Also we are now upgrading iur R/3 system to ECC 6.0.Is the above issue resolved in ECC or still persists in ECC 6.0 too???
Has anybody encountered the above issue??Please share experiences.

I am curious as to if you got this resolved. When we upgraded, I was hoping that we would finally get to use distribute by value between SRM and SAP without it converting over to percentages. I have worked with OSS and the discussion forum to come up with a resolution but no luck yet.

Currently I cannot find anything official on enterprise app distribution - only third party information. Has something changed, or is this a documentation glitch? Surely wireless OTA enterprise app distribution is still available via the enterprise developer program?
Note: We currently use this for one of our enterprise clients. But before recommending other clients to join the enterprise developer program, we would like an official citation on whether this mechanism still exists.

Document Distribution limited to 999

Hi All,
We are creating a document distribution list for the entire company (+-2000 users).
When we distribute to the list only the first 999 distributions go through succesfully, the rest fail.
Has any one else had this issue before?

If you wanna use Document distribution only my solution may not help u.
Suppose you have DIR created and saved.
If You need to send to all the User's of your company, Go to CV02n or CV03n and choose service for object Icon and you get the Send Email option .
You down above to the Text column you can find Icon for "CREATE DISTRIBUTION LIST".
Copy the 2000 Employee ID's name and paste under Recipient List Line item.
Now select ALL and choose "CREATE DISTRIBUTION LIST". .
Enter Value for Name & Title and save it under Private folder as target List.
Advantage : Not only the Document you can send Since Send object with note functionality is available for all change and display functionality for all transaction - you can circulate any information to the entire company.
This could be a Workaround.

The Navigation Path 는 아래와 같습니다.
Payables>Invoices>Entry>Invoices
Press Distributions button
Track as Asset을 check하는 것은 아래 의미를 가지고 있씁니다.
Checkbox Track As Asset is marked means that Oracle Payables will transfer
this distributions to Oracle Assets during Create Mass Additions execution.
Assets can be created in Oracle Assets from imported distributions
afterwards.
Default로 Asset account일경우 track as asset이 check됩니다.
이럴경우 check box는 변경이 불가능합니다.
The checkbox Track As Asset is unmarked by default when invoice distributions
have an expense account. This checkbox can be adjusted for unposted invoice
distributions only.

Altough for all the assets accounts track as an asset checked there wont be any entries transferred to Fixed assets unless otherwise you have defined that asset account as a clearing account in your categoris.

Approval before COST DISTRIBUTION Process

Hi,
Is there any standard functionality (in 12.0.6) of Approval available before Cost Distributions ?
After importing actual transactions, creating pre-approved batches or doing Project Transfer, user want to put restriction on Cost Distribution. They want Approval should come into the picture before running Cost Distribution process.
Really appreciate any standard or customize idea.

The workaround you may consider is enabling the requests of cost distributions only for certain responsibility. Give that responsibility to the user who would check the expenditure and approve them. After the approval that user would run the cost distribution.

When i open a prodject (open session )I Do not see my mp3 only vocals

Hi ,Its been driving me crazy i spend a lot of time trying to get my prodject where i can open it up easy with all my work .
when i save it i save it as( save session as)then as a - multitrack ,ses
and been importing the beat and trying 2 line up my vocals on the beats ,,
is there a way i can save and open all my work where i dont have trouble ?

Rule 1 - don't under any circumstances save your intermediate files (the ones you imported into the sessions) as MP3 files. There are two reasons for this; firstly you lose quality every time you re-open them, because they are not native to Audition and have to be encoded and decoded each time. The second reason is that when you do this, the files are made up to MP3 blocks, and a little bit of silence is added at the front end to save problems with some decoders. So when you reopen the files, you can pretty much guarantee that they will have shifted.
When you save your session prior to mixing it, save the files as .wav files. That way when the session is reopened, everything will show up without quality loss, and in the correct place. MP3 files are a distribution-only format, not a production one.

Very Slow H.264 Encoding in FCP 10.1.2 and Compressor 4.1 on nMP

I have a fully maxed out 12-core nMP and editing with this machine in FCP 10.1.1 has been a delight. I recently completed a 4K project from footage shot with the Sony AX-100 and then output the project from FCP X using File>Share>Master File to ProRes 422. This operation occurred in about the same length of time as the length of the project (18.5 min.). I then brought this 75 GB ProRes .mov file into Compressor 4.1, and set up Compressor to encode to an H.264 file at 70 Mb/sec. This encode to h.264 is only 1/4 complete at 48 min. and it appears that it will take Compressor about 4 hours to encode this 18 min. project to h.264. Furthermore, I noticed that with the share to a master prores file FCP X was using 50-60% of my total CPU resources while the encode to h.264 in Compressor is using barely 16% of the total CPU. Thus it appears to me that while FCP 10.1.1 is optimized for the nMP, certainly Compressor 4.1, at least for h.264 encoding, is not.
My question is basically what am I missing? Is there a better workflow than using Compressor 4.1 for high bit rate h. 264 encoding of 4K? If so, what is the best way to use my nMP to get a high bit rate h.264 4K file for sending to YouTube and other online streaming?

I am encoding only a single project from FCP X in Compressor 4.1 and using only a single instance of Compressor. I don't really see that using multiple instances of Compresor with a single job would be helpful, but perhaps I don't understand something.
The project has now been encoding for 2.5 hr and is slightly less than half complete. The CPU usage is still at 16-17%. Overall this seems like a ridiculously slow encode to h.264 from a ProRes 422 file in Compressor 4.1.
Here are some thoughts on alternatives that I may try. (1) Take the Pro Res 422 file into Adobe's Media Encoder CC and encode it to high bit rate 4K h.264. (2) Take the Pro Res 422 file into Handbrake and encode to high bitrate 4K h.264. Handbrake does seem to make far more use of the nMP's CPU's than Compressor 4.1. Don't know about Media Encoder since I have not tried any h.264 encoding in Media Encoder.
The irony is that my nMP will play then entire 18.5 minute 4K project from the timeline with virtually no dropped frames, but rendering it to h.264 at 4K and high bit rate seems to take forever.
If you have any other thoughts, I would love to hear them. Thanks so much for responding, and I would love to hear from any FCP X experts who are encoding 4K to h.264.

CC2014 mp4/h.264 file error

Just updated to CC2014 and now premiere can not play any mp4/h.264 file only showing a green image. Even if you export a working clip thats a different format from premiere as h.264 and import it back in, it will only show up green. Media Encoder 2014 is also having the same issue. I've tried clearing the cache, creating a new project, restarted the pc, reinstalled the software, updated drivers... can't seem to fix it.

I was going to downgrade back to the previous version but the option to select which version you want to download has now either been removed or is not working on the site.

I'm not seeing that here. Such files work fine.
You might try looking at the graphics card/driver.

FCPX + Lion + Cannot handle AAC or Apple Lossless audio in H.264! (Clicks and Pops)

This is a problem I've been having since I upgraded to Lion, and I've posted this response in other forums, but wanted to start a fresh one with a video I created of my findings. In a nutshell: FCPX in Lion cannot handle AAC audio in H.264 files since it will create audible clicks and pops when it subsequently renders the footage. This ***** because the iPhone 4 for example records as H.264 and AAC for the audio. Below are my findings:
So I think I figured it out! (I'm pretty sure FCPX + Lion has issues with compressed audio formats, ESPECIALLY AAC and Apple Lossless!) There's a video of my findings below:
1. I tried doing exactly the same thing I was trying to do on my machine on a co-worker's Snow Leopard MBP, and it worked out fine (it was just importing an iPhone 4 .mov and exporting it in FCPX). The output file was pretty much the same as what came in.
2. I found out that only movies from my iPhone 4 were coming out all crazy in the audio, yet my Canon T2i files were fine. Both are H.264, yet the Canon T2i records audio as Linear PCM, while the iPhone 4 records audio as AAC.
3. So I got an idea to use screen flow to record a youtube video and record the computer's audio. Then I decided to export with different formats, both as HD NTSC standards and as web standards with H.264.
4. I found out that both NTSC and H.264 standards were perfectly fine, SO LONG AS THE AUDIO WAS LINEAR PCM (or uncompressed!).
5. I then exported the same clip (both times as H.264) and ONLY changed how the audio was rendered (either Linear PCM/Uncompressed or AAC) and VOILA, I got click and pop artifacts ONLY in the AAC version. The ones that were output as uncompressed audio were totally fine!
CONCLUSION:
Final Cut Pro X on OS X Lion has issues with compressed audio, MAINLY AAC and Apple Lossless! Anything that is Linear PCM/Uncompressed should be fine! For example, MPEG 4 AAC Enhanced Low Delay at 320K came out 95% OK, one or two clicks.
So if any of us are working with material where the audio came to us already as AAC (like an iPhone 4), then we have to rip the audio out somehow first (like through VLC for example) and import it separately as an uncompressed file.

I was having the same problem and spent several hours on the phone with apple working with one of their 3rd level support guys. Their is deffinatley a issue with Lion and FCPX. I was told they would escalate to a FCPX engineer and they would get back to me in two days. In the mean time I went to my local apple store and was able to recreate the issue on every machine I tried. Apple did call back and confirm that there is an issue with the way FCPX and Lion handle the import and export of AAC files. They said there would hopefully be fixed in a future update.
The best work around I found is to take your AAC file and convert it to a WAV. I used compressor to do this and it seems to have solved the problem.

H.264 Containers

I was wandering if anyone knew of any advantages/disadvantages of encoding in H.264 with a .mov extension vs. a .mp4 extension? Thanks.

Actually, h.264 encoded .mp4s exported by QuickTime Pro do not support chapter markers at all. (I mean QuickTime Pro because even though Compressor can create .mp4 files, those cannot make use of h.264 encoding, only MPEG-4 encoding).
Personally, I always use .mov files, unless I'm exporting specifically for the iTunes universe (iPod/iPhone/tv). I can't speak necessarily to QT having greater compatibility, but with so many folks having iPods (and iTunes requires a QT install), .movs usually aren't an issue like they once were in the Windows universe.
And yes, all other things being equal - frame size and rate, data rate, etc. - .mov and .mp4 files encoded with h.264 should look the same.
