H.264 out of Compressor fails: 'Codec Not Installed'

Been having a lot of trouble getting Compressor (v2.0.1) to output H.264 files all of a sudden. I setup a batch, the first one will compressed fine, then the next 4 went about halfway through and then failed with an error message 'codec not installed'.
I then tried to do one file at a time, tried rebooting, tried a file systems check, tried trashing the compressor.plist preferences, all to no avail. H.264 is no longer working.
The one movie that I successfully encoded plays fine, as have all the other movies I've done with H.264 over the months...
Any ideas what I need to do to fix this?

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running on?
If you are trying to rip VOB (video files) from the DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc, you do not need to convert them into any other format.
You simply insert the DVD disc in the DVD burner tray.
Manually set the project preset to DV Standard or DVD Standard Widescreen, depending on how the DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc was produced.
    http://atr935.blogspot.com/2013/04/pe11-accuracy-of-automatic-project.html
Detail for manual setting of project preset is described in that blog post.
Then you use Add Media/"DVD Camera or Computer Drive"/Video Importer to bring your video files (VOBs with a file name such as VTS_01_1.VOB and so on into the project and Timeline.
Are you doing all that? Please clarify. We can supply more details as indicated.
    Thank you.

  • Fails with codec not installed error

Hello all of a sudden Compressor fails to produce ProRes 422 encodes with the error (in the log) "*Processing service request error: Codec not installed*". It is installed as I can use and have used ProRes elsewhere. Running Compressor 3.0.5.

I've tried the trashing of user prefs and Qmaster cache as mentioned here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888 as well as running the utility Compressor Repair http://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressor_repair.htm. Also, after testing I see that Compressor is actually having troubles reading 1 particular ProRes file and re-encoding it as ProRes. (I'm running a multi-step conversion using ProRes for all intermediary steps). I don't see anything wrong with this file (plays in QT, displays in the Compressor Preview window, etc.), but I'll remake it and see how Compressor does.

  • Tried Most Everything... Error Type of file not supported... codec not installed

Hi Friends: I have been battling with the error message of ... "Type of file not support or codec not installed."  I have been throughout the forums searching for answers and attempting various suggestions.  I am stumped and am reaching out for some wisdom and help.
1.)    System Gateway – T-6859u, Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2Ghz, 4 Gig ram, Problem has existed on both Vista and upgraded Windows 7.  I have used Premiere since Premier 5 (Full version not elements) including versions 6 and PRO.  I have Elements on my laptop for convenience.
2.)    Assets- Problem exists with all AVI files.  This includes files that worked previously but will no longer be recognized.  I have used Elements since version 7 was new.  It is only the last 4 months this has been and issue.  These are AVIs that previously working in Elements 7 from Panasonic DV camera and other DV sources.
3.)    Problem first appeared when Windows Update installed security patch KB975560.  Once the Security patch installed Premiere quit running AVIs.  When the patch was removed Premiere worked again. However, windows update continued to reload the patch.  The patch has now been removed and prevented from reloading.  However, the problem now persists.
4.)    Other attempted repairs.  Reloading Premiere Elements 7, Upgrading to Windows 7, Removing and reinstalling K-Lite Codec packs inc standard and 64bit.  Loading LEADTOOLS.  None has repaired the problem  All the AVI files playback fine in other programs including Windows Movie Maker, Media Player Classic, WM player etc.
I'm not sure what to do next.  I have been a dedicated Premiere user for so many years, I don't want to switch to another program.  Any suggestions friends?

    Welcome to the forum.
What version of Apple's QT Player do you have installed?
PrE relies on this much more than its big-brother, PrPro, until CS5.
From my experience, QT  7.5.5 was my "last known good," and some problems have been reported with the 7.6.2 and 7.6.3 versions. 7.6.6 is out, and works well for many Adobe users.
I would investigate updating QT Player.
Also, FFDShow, an element in K-Lite has been death to PrPro for many people. Just having it installed brings PrPro to its knees.
Though Adobe hides its CODEC's pretty well, K-Lite has been known to shift the priority of the Adobe MainConcept CODEC's. While it does not overwrite them, or delete them, it sets up some of its CODEC's to take priority. There are some older threads on Registry editing and utilities to reset the priority of the Adobe MainConcept CODEC's. Seems that Robert Johnson participated in those discussions and may have furnished the link to at least one utility.
Those are all the thoughts that I have now, and none might be of use.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - Robert has not been around here lately, but does spend time on the Muvipix Community forum. I'd post there in the PrE 7 forum, and ask if anyone has any ideas too.

  • Codec not installed

When I try to send FCP project to compressor or if I try to upload directory to YouTube I get an error message Codec not installed.  This is probably related to the fact that I used MacKeeper recently.  Does anyone know how I reinstall the required Codec(s)?
    Thanks

I wish I could.  My friend installed FCP on my macbook and now he's back home (several hours away from me).

  • TIF limitation throws up 'codec not installed' error

How odd - PRE7 produces a 'codec not installed' error if I try to import a .TIF file of 600dpi resolution. But it works fine if I resize the image to 300dpi resolution.
I'm posting this for the benefit of anyone else who might encounter this inappropriate still  image error.
    Cheers,
    Neale
Insanity is hereditary, you get it from your children

Because DPI/PPI is ignored in Video, I am surprised at this. Guess it's ignored - up to a point.
Now, the "usual suspects," when one has an issue with still image Import are:
CMYK (actually, almost any Mode but RGB)
    16-bit (or now 32-bit) images
    Progressive JPEG's
PSD's with a very small Layer (I've only seen this in PrPro)
Images with a combo of Vector Shapes, that are not Rasterized in PS - though some of these work. NLE's just do a poor job of Rasterization)
    Images above 4096 x 4096 pixels
Guess that we can add another - higher DPI/PPI, at least 600dpi. As a habit, I have Actions that handle Mode, Bit-Depth, and will set the PPI to 72, so had never encountered this. At least now we are armed with an additional attribute to ask about.
    Thanks for pointing that out.

Not to sure what type AVI files they are, the storage devise is at present offshore on a job.
Can you clarify, if you edit/import video footage with adobe premiere 10 and then create a file, the file or the original raw footage is not stored on computer for re-use, if it is stored, is it stored in the original format.

  • Compressor fails with Codec not installed error after 10.5.7 update

Problem: Compressor fails on submission to standard codecs such as H.264, Apple Intermediate Codec, Motion JPEG, etc. Codecs do exist on system as playback from QuickTime is unaffected. This is new behavior as of update to OS 10.5.7.
    Specs: 17" MackBook Pro, Compressor 3.0.5, QuickTime 7.6, OS X 10.5.7
Attempt to resolve: Tried completely uninstalling Compressor/QMaster and reinstalling from the FCStudio disc as per "Compressor: Troubleshooting basics" (Article: TS1888 - Old Article: 302845). This installed Compressor 3.0 which compressed a single mov then began failing on subsequent submissions. Updated 3.0 to 3.0.5 with no favorable results. Submissions continue to fail.
    Any ideas?

From my personal experience, the troubleshooting article which you mention in your original post does not constitute a "full uninstall". There are files missing from that list which are required for a full install.
Using the instructions in the link provided, I've been able to do multiple uninstalls & reinstalls successfully, not only with Compressor & QMaster, but with other Studio apps as well.
However, since there are codecs missing, you may need to do a full uninstall of Final Cut Studio. I personally haven't upgraded to 10.5.7 yet, since I'm currently in the middle of some projects, but it would be worth mentioning that before any kind of software upgrades, all of our system drives get a full backup. This allows us a way to "undo" any bad upgrade.

  • Compressor codec not installed

I have tried to use compressor to make an m2v file for DVD studio pro 4 using the generic m2v codec provided by DVD stuio Pro4.. When I submit the file, compressor tells me that the action failed because the codec is not installed. What does that mean. I have installed all the components from the disc to my hard drive. I have used other codecs and the audio files work but not the video.

What is the codec for your footage you are trying to encode to m2v?
It it isn't a .mov file, that is probably your problem.

  • Codec not installed error, using local cluster

This was working, but now it's not. I have a local cluster that helps me parallize my transcoding jobs. If I send the job to "This Computer" it completes without errors, but it only uses 2 cores (out of 12). If I send the job to my local cluster, it fails with "codec not found". I've tried it with H.264 and ProRes 422 HQ and I get the same error. Obviously, I have the codecs, or the job wouldn't run on "This Computer". Furthermore, the cluster is only running on the same computer.
I admit, I haven't had a lot of time to re-install and/or reconfigure things to see if the problem will go away. I was wondering if anyone has seen this?
Since it worked, I have updated Compressor and Motion, and I have installed a trial version of FCPX for evaluation. Otherwise, the computer is less than 2 months old, running OS X 10.7.5.
Thank you, for any tips you can throw my way.
    Douglas Toltzman

Hi Doug, don't dispair... Sounds like the Qmaster structure needs a kick. Have you had a look at the logs for any errors relating to Qmaster in /var/logs (via the console.app).. Worth a look. Also the these logs are exposed via the share monitor.app as well..
Sounds like a state information pointer is corrupt. This is easily fixed
Also I'm curious how you established the cluster. Is it a "quick cluster", or one you initialised via apple Qmaster admin or is your host just set up for services only and you submitted the batch to "computer plus"? Just curious.
In all these setup, it involves our old and sometimes less faithful mate "qmAster" ...
I'd propose you reinitialise Qmaster by removing its state information objects and cluster storage. Now there is usually no need to remove the compressor prefs unless u have some ui issue with compressor....
For the former these are many ways to disestablish Qmaster and I have documented on here in the following post. Worth a try.. This procedure usually sets compressor up ok. Additionally there's mention of issuing 3rd party apps to cleanup Qmaster .. They don't help much as they don't hit the current structure me thinks. Save some money and try the following.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17356372#17356372
The least result is that the cluster will be established cleanly and working.
Submit your batch again and report back. We can continue the troubleshooting from there.
Any post your results for others to see.

  • Adobe 9 Premiere Elements "file not supported or codec not installed"?

I am trying the Adobe Premiere Elements 9 trial version to determine if I should upgrade from Premiere Elements 7.  I was able to perform a "get media" on an AVI file and was able to create a DVD (including menus and chapters) that I can view in my DVD player in PE7.
I decided to create the same DVD project using PE9 so I could compare both programs.  When I perform a "get media" on the same AVI file in PE9, I receive the following message: :This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."  I'm not sure why I was able to successfully process the AVI file in PE7 but not in PE9.
The AVI file characteristics are Video: 640(w)x480(h), data rate: 1329kbps, bitrate: 1448kbps, frame rate: 29 frames/second; Audio: bit rate: 118kbps, channels: 2 (stereo), sample rate: 48 kHz.
Anyone have any ideas or suggesstions?  Thanks!

    Chris,
There are probably 2000 possible CODEC's, with all the variations and tweaks, that can be placed in an AVI wrapper. Recently, some camera mfgrs. have begun wrapping H.264 material, tweaked from the norm, inside of AVI's. Why? I have no clue, but those cause all sort of issues with NLE programs - yet it is being done. To a lesser degree, the same can be said for MOV, WMV and even MPEG/MP4 wrappers. Knowing the file's format is meaningless, especially with the above cited case of H.264 inside of an AVI.
The great free utilities, G-Spot, or MediaInfo, will tell you pretty much all that you need to know about the file(s).
Premiere Elements, and also PrPro, are designed to work well with myriad file types, and specs., but certainly not all. PrE handles some consumer file types, better than its "big brother," but PrPro handles many professional file types, that PrE cannot touch.
I have CyberLink's PowerDirector (older version), and Magix MovieEdit Pro (also older), as each handles some specific file types and specs., better than either my PrE, or PrPro. Along wil those, basically used as converters, I have a great conversion program, DigitalMedia Converter 2.7, and will often take "odd" material into it, to be batch converted to something that PrE, or PrPro loves, like DV-AVI Type II's, for SD material.
The world of Video is very involved, and one needs to grasp the concept of CODEC's very early on, as they are the building blocks of Video files (and Audio files too). Each quarter, there are probably a dozen new ones, or variations on older ones, utilized by camera mfgrs. For a bit of background on CODEC's, see this ARTICLE. [Could be linked from the earlier article?]
Good luck, and let us know what is inside that AVI wrapper. Someone will know how best to handle it.

  • Matrox IFrame codecs not installing in AME

I'm running Media Encoder CS4 on a Windows XP machine.  After a  BIOS issue I won't bore you with, I had to repair my machine and reinstall CS4.  I have always used Media Encoder to convert our ProRes files to the Matrox IFrame codec to use in our Crossfire for playback.  But when I reinstall the codecs, they don't appear anywhere in Media Encoder.  The Matrox installer says that the codecs are installed, but Media Encoder doesn't seem to see them, and they don't appear in the list.  Do I have to drag something into a specific folder?
    Thanks!

Yes.  And I just updated Quicktime to see if that would help, but I'm still having the same issue.

  • Codecs not installed; trial version

After having 64 bit Win OS installed:  When my students open Premiere Pro they get the error message, "Additional codecs that are not included in the trial version of Premiere Pro must be installed."
After exiting this dialog box I get the message, "Installation was unsuccessful. Restarting Premiere will trigger the codec installer again. Contact Adobe Technical Support if this problem persists."
I installed Adobe CS4 Master Collection from a disc, put in the license code info, and registered the software so don't know why it is saying I have the trial version.
    Any suggestions?

Oops, I must have gotten the idea that you did have the trial version from the title of the post.
Now, if you have the full-paid version, and have upgraded to only find that you now have nothing MPEG, then the "revert to trial" Bug has bitten. This happened with some regularity in CS4, but has just surfaced with the last update, or so, in CS5.
Look to see if you have Project Presets for MPEG, or look in the Export Presets. If the MPEG Presets are now gone, you have been bitten.
The sequence of actions would be:
    Deactivate, if possible
    Uninstall PrPro
Download and run Adobe Clean Script CS5 (regardless of whether you have CS4, or CS5) several times, rebooting between each run
    Install PrPro
Immediately update PrPro, prior to even launching it
    That fixes the Bug.
Good luck, and sorry for my confusion,

  • This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed.

About two months ago, I was able to edit these files and create videos from them. Now I get the following message: This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed.
Aside from regular Windows updates, nothing has been added or removed from my PC.
I’m using fully patched Windows 7

Canon T2I Hi def movies are .MOV

I can't believe that tech challenged moi is replying to the codec issue.  I bought a new computer with Windows 7.  I won't go into the tech issues with a Windows update....   Anyway I downloaded Photoshop Elements 8 and figured out how to import my photos and videos to Photoshop on the new comptuter.  Photos were fine but videos wouldn't play.  I got the messages about Apple's Quicktime required and then the "required codec is not installed".  I went "What is a "codec"!
I downloaded Quicktime which went smoothly but I still had the "required codec not installed" message to deal with.  I researched and found that it referred to compressed/decompressed files(?)  Next I googled "Windows 7 codec download" (not even sure if there was one).  There was!   I clicked on the first result and downloaded the codec.  The info stated that this codec should read 99.9% of video files.  Went back to Photoshop and clicked on the blue video thumbnail.  It worked!!!  The video played just as it did on the old computer.
Hope this helps someone else.  Now why would Windows 7 not include this codec in the first place.  I never had to download one before on other computers.  Only Quicktime needed downloading.  Oh, well.
