H.264 to xvid?

Hello everyone.
I'm a bit of a media noob. I recently downloaded some TV episodes of a show that are in the .mkv container, compressed with h.264 for the video and AAC for the audio.
That's cool, they play fine with VLC and look great. The problem is that I still use an original xbox with xbmc to watch things on my TV. Apparently the h.264 compression is a bit much for that machine. The videos will play, but really slow. I don't hear much for the audio either, but it might because of the slowdown.
My question: is there a simple way to convert these over to xvid? I don't care about filesize going up, and I don't really care about loss in quality. The .mkv container should be fine, as long it can contain xvid? I dunno.
I started to research it on my own, and I got a lot of people talking about windows programs, and a lot of stuff I don't know a ton about.
Is this process even worth doing? Or should I just find a better source?
Thanks!

cschep wrote:Thanks guys. I guess I was curious because I didn't see how the 2nd pass could use any data from the 1st pass if there was no output file. It must store something somewhere right? Or am I just confused about how video encoding works?
It outputs it's finding to a log file in the current directory which will be used for the second pass. This is the same data that would have been used to do the compression for single pass. The second pass works better because the encoder now knows more about where the most detail is so it can use less compression there, and where the least detail is so it can use more. This technique works best for encoders that don't do the highest quality encoding the first time through. This includes xvid and most mpeg2 encoders. Some encoders like x264 when set up properly won't really gain much if any help from multiple passes.
I should have mentioned this before. For higher quality output when lowering the bit rate, it's best to use the same codecs as before. Conversions from lossy formats to other lossy formats (m4a-->mp3) reduces quality by huge amounts. Reducing the bit rate in the same format is far less destructive.
I also forgot to mention that the greatest place in the Universe to get answers about all of this stuff is:

  • Convert massive video library from Xvid to H.264?

Hey guys, I have built up a fairly large video collection of movies and tv shows (~300) over the years, and they are all encoded in xvid. What I would like to do is convert them to h.264. It would be VERY tedious to go through and convert them all manually. I have searched everywhere I can think of for a solution, but haven't found one. If any of you guys have a solution, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

skottish wrote:There's a VDPAU driver specifically for DivX/Xvid in Mplayer called ffodivxvdpau now. You'll need a newer Mplayer revision than the one in the repos to use it.
Yeah, but you need a specific graphic card. As I said, they are listed under "Feature Set C" in Nvidia's VDPAU documentation. Other graphic cards cannot handle Xvid. But every CPU since like forever can, so unless one is just shopping for a new graphic card, I don't see any big need for hardware decoding of Xvid.

  • XVID versus H.264

I am using Handbrake to rip all of my DVDs to play through Front Row. Which format is best?

Depends, of course, on the quality you want and the disk space you have available.
I'm almost done going through this process with all of the X Files DVDs. I'm doing everything with H.264 (better quality at the same bitrate, but takes ages to encode).
For the 4:3 stuff, I'm giving it 1300 kbps for video (+ 128 kbps for audio), and reducing the resolution to 512 width. For the 16:9 seasons, I'm using 1315 kbps and 592 width.
Use two pass encoding. Takes twice as long, but if you're planning to keep these vids, it's worth it.
While I'm giving the full specs, I've also found that I have to deinterlace all the X Files, otherwise I get terrible blurring. This could be an NTSC/PAL issue (I'm in Australia, and while the DVDs are PAL, the show would presumably have been shot in NTSC).
My Solo Mini, when doing nothing much except ripping, takes 3 - 4 hours for each 44 (+/- 2) minute episode (two passes). (This is a perceptive measurement; the actual frame rate it indicates averages to about 11 or 12 fps.). I also found it interesting the a 1.5 GHz Solo does so much better than my 2 GHz G5 iMac -- it only gives me about 6-7 fps with the same specs. And don't get me started on the 400 MHz G4 Power Mac (I just wanted to see how it goes, and hey, since it's only a print and file server, you might as well give it a DVD to work on and come back a week later).

  • How do I convert an .mp4 h.264 file into a simple Mpeg 2 file...

I've had Quicktime for quitesometime now.
I'been been through many QT versions but version 7 series, I think has problems.
    I've been dl'ing .mp4 files, with h.264 codecs.
Quicktime plays them wonderfully but I'd like to put the movies on my media servers and stream them to my network dvd players(thin-clients).
They can stream mpeg 1 and 2 great, as well as Xvid, Divx, and even VOBs'.
I installed Quicktime 7 along time ago, and tried an export to many different data file formats. I would either get no video or no sound. I have just about every codec needed to do any conversion to Divx or Xvid.
    I also installed 3ivx.
Can anyone tell me how something so simple can be so difficult? QuickTime, if it plays it, and shows that its capable of exporting to different formats, should be able to do the job.
Beleive me, I know what your thinking. I've going as far as formatting, reinstalling Windows XP Pro, Updating, etc many times just to try to re-encode these .mp4 files into something big, yes, a large RAW file. Something that can be easily converted into anything else such as the basic old Mpg 1 or 2 file...
Please, any help would be apprecaited!
    NeuroPsyche

I tried ffmpeg but it just doesn't seem like it does a very good job at converting. I dont know why, but I think its because the .mp4 file has 6.1 sound or that new acc codec.
I'm not sure about it, but when I do use ffmpeg, the sound doens't come out.
    Thanks!
    Dave.
QuickTime doesn't have the capability to export to
MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, at least not without third-party
codecs (and I'm not aware of any for Windows for
those formats, though there could be some somewhere).
You might want to take a look at the open-source ffmpeg which can
convert H.264 to MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 (as well as a
    number of other formats).
    Hope this helps.

  • Off the top of anyone's head, is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC safe for editing?

Hi. My Samsung MX20 camcorder outputs as MP4, and I tried converting it to AVI because I thought that there would be more trimming tools for AVI. I tried probably 3 or more MP4 to AVI converters, and all AVI ouputs never played properly in Elements. I had the following 2 problems happen to me that have been addressed already in the forums:
Premier Elemenets 7 playing clip too fast, audio normal...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2613385
.AVI video not importing correctly. Imports as audio only.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2712057
In addition to these 2 things, I got random stuttering with other AVI files.
I couldn't figure out how to trim and export with VirtualDub without blowing up the size, so I gave up on that. I recently found good MP4 cutting software, such as Yamb, so I thought I was good. But after testing it out, the sync was off. I tried other splitting software, but there were problems also with the MP4 that was output.
I’ve decided to not convert, split, or touch the original MP4s.
    Here’s my Gspot:
    http://i.imgur.com/TdaGn.png
I downloaded the K-lite codec pack and ffdshow, but my windows media player doesn’t play the camcorder files, which I don’t’ mind, because VLC and Quicktime do. The camcorder files play in Elements 7, but I think there’s some choppiness that is due to my slow computer.
I was just wondering if H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a red flag in the same way that Divx and Xvid are.
I saw a description of a Sanyo Xacti VPC-E camcorder that outputs as AVC/H.264 also, and that product comes bundled with Elements 4. 7 should be compatible right?
    Thanks.
I probably shouldn’t post since the original MP4s play, but I’m just wondering if this type (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) may be problematic later on.

I can't find any evidence in the specs for this camcorder that is shoots in AVCHD video.
From the specs it appears that the camcorder shoots standard-def video. Beyond that, the specs are pretty vague, so I have to take your word for it that it saves video as MP4s.
Unfortunately, if it is not saving to the AVCHD standard, the video is not likely to be compatible with Premiere Elements and you will not be able to edit it without converting it to a more standard format, like DV-AVI. This could well explain why you are experiencing the other challenges you describe.
The FAQs to the right of our forum describe how to convert to DV-AVIs. Super, which is free, may work -- but Quicktime Pro, which costs $29 from Apple.com, definitely will.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
Also, which project preset did you choose when  you opened your Premiere Elements project? That too could be relevant.

  • Jerky output with PE9 using XviD 1.2.2

    Hi,
I'm a long time user of Corel's Videostudio PRO X3, but I have now converted to Primiere Elements 9.
Need some help. Been searching the forum but haven't found anything useful to my problem.
I have a Canon Powershot camera recording in .MOV H.264 1280x720px and 23.976 fps.
Exporting (sharing) those clips from PE9 works fine if I chose MPG, MOV or WMV, but when trying to export (share) as .AVI and using the codec XviD (ver 1.2.2) the output is very jerky.
See the following clip that I uploaded to YouTube:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I7VHh_OBZc
I rendered this clip on two different machines and it seems like on my i7 950 multi core CPU machine the result is worse compared to my old single-core AMD machine. I don't know if this single/multi-core CPU has anything to do with this.
    Anyway, now using:
    INTEL CORE I7 950 3.06GHZ 8MB S-1366 and 6 GB RAM
GIGABYTE GEFORCE GTX 460 OC 1 GB
    INTEL X25-M 2.5" SSD disc
    Any ideas what to do?
    //Stefan

I exported the avi uncompressed and then used VirtualDub & Lame to create a good looking XviD. Guess that's the workaround I must use. Works fine, though.

  • Extended video codec support on iPhone (DivX, XviD, etc)

When will the Apple add support for more widely used video codecs? E.g.
    DivX
    XviD
    WMV
I know, I know H264 is a pretty darn good codec, but I do have quite a few flics in DivX and other formats and I don't wanna hassle with converting them.
The lack of video and audio (flac, ogg, wma) codec support is really a turn down!!

Divx and wmv are proprietary codecs.
Apple supports and uses open industry standards-such as
    mpeg4/h.264.

  • H.264 (avc1) playback problems

I have a series of videos that I am trying to watch in quicktime.
When I load the video, and hit cmd+i, I am told that the format is "H.264, 512 x 384, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 22.050 kHz." Upon hitting play, I get an initial green screen, a few seconds of sound and then Quicktime crashes.
VLC, on the other hand, plays this correcty and reports that the video stream is "avc1." On my windows machine I can play this file with the ffdshow decoder.
Anyone have any ideas how to get this working in quicktime? I want this going in Front Row.
    Thanks to all.

Thanks for the answer. I have had some luck with transcoding.
At some point, I was able to get a xvid codec working through quicktime. I was able to extract ffmpeg from right clicking ffmpegX and chosing "Show Package contents." I placed it my my path and created the following script below.
    file="$1"
    newfile="$2"
    format"=mp4"
    ffmpeg -i "${file}" \
    -y \
    -f ${format} \
    -vcodec xvid \
    -threads 3 \
    -deinterlace \
    -bf 2 \
    -an \
    -pass 1 \
    "${newfile}"
    ffmpeg -i "${file}" \
    -y \
    -f ${format} \
    -vcodec xvid \
    -threads 3 \
    -deinterlace \
    -bf 2 \
    -ar 44100 \
    -ab 128 \
    -pass 2 \
    -pass 1 \
    "${newfile}"
You should be able to call it with two parameters: the original file as the first and the new "transcoded" file as the second. I could see no noticible video degredation between the h.264 and the xvid.
Please note that this isn't the actual script that I used but a simplified version. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to run it.

  • Encoding H.264 @ 640 x 480 for iPod with Avidemux?

    Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, so please be gentle!
QuickTime/iTunes don't support XviD decoding on Windows, meaning I need to use a third-party tool for encoding my XviD videos to iPod. I am hoping that somebody on this forum has experience with H.264 iPod encodes to contribute towards getting mine working.
I've been using Avidemux 2.5.1 on Windows XP SP3 for other work very successfully and on paper it certainly seems capable of creating 640x480 H.264 encodes for my iPod.
The iPod does play 640x480 MPEG-4 ASP (XviD) and 320x240 MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) encodes, both made by Avidemux. It also plays sample Apple files converted to 640x480 H.264 by iTunes (I've checked their format).
However, for the life of me I haven't been able to create a compliant 640x480 H.264 encode with Avidemux. No matter what options I've turned off and/or tuned down and no matter how low I've taken the bitrate, no 640x480 H.264 encode has worked so far with Avidemux.
My iPod's specs are at http://support.apple.com/kb/SP26 and I suspect that the "Low-Complexity" Baseline Profile is at the heart of my problems (potentially also the AAC-LC audio, although I guess then my other successful encodes with Avidemux/AAC wouldn't have worked either?). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264 only mentions a Constrained Baseline Profile, and I'm not sure whether that's the same thing as the "Low-Complexity" mentioned in the above iPod spec.
Has anybody succeeded in making iPod-compliant 640x480 H.264 encodes with Avidemux, and if so, may I please have the X264 encoder settings for Avidemux 2.5.1 from you?
    Many thanks,
    Francois

I'd like to report that our problem has been solved! What I had not seen before was the setting in QT to use the "Baseline" setting. That made all the difference.
For others, the setting can only be found by doing the following:
Use the Movie to MPEG-4 setting
    File format: MP4
    Video format: H.264
This will give a "Video Option" button. Change to "Baseline"
That's the key. After that, any settings can be used, such as data rate, frame rate, etc.
    Here's what I now use:
(Under the Video Options button) Restrict Profile to Baseline
    Encoding mode: Best quality (multi-pass)
    Video format: H.264
    Data rate: 75 kbps
    Optimized for download
    Image size 320x240 QVGA
    Frame Rate: 15fps
    Key frame automatic
    Audio: AAC-LC
    Data rate: 48
    Channels: Mono
    Output Sample rate: 44.100
    Encoding Quality: Best
I want to thank all those who gave us input both here and in other discussions!

  • QT H.264 files with two audio tracks. Quicktime plays 2nd track first. ***?

I've been experimenting with H.264 (AVC) and my DVDs. Using Handbrake, I ripped a DVD to MP4 (H.264) and including the director's commentary as the second track.
When I play the MP4 with Quicktime Player, it plays the director's commentary instead of the main soundtrack. VLC, however, correctly plays the first track (main movie audio track) and it allows me to select the second track via a menu.
To get Quicktime to play the proper track, I have to open "Movie Properties" and manually uncheck the second track. This was never a problem with DivX/XviD encoded files with two audio tracks; Quicktime Player correctly played the first track.
Why does Quicktime ignore the first audio track in MP4s (but not AVIs) and is there a way to correct this?

    I do have QT Pro.
H.264 files are usually saved in a MP4 container. That's what Handbrake, ffpegX, and D-Vision create, anyway.
The "Choose Language" option is greyed out (unavailable) when I open this H.264 MP4 in Quicktime. If I try to change the settings in "Movie Properties," it says that I must save it with the .MOV file suffix.
It makes no sense to me that Quicktime Player can correctly identify the main audio soundtrack in a XviD file with an AVI container but not in a H.264 video with a MP4 container which Apple has been touting as the latest, greatest thing. Even VLC, an open source product still in beta, gets it right.

  • How to COMPRESS to MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format for MAXIMUM YOUTUBE quality?

I'm sick of slaving away here on fcp to then upload stuff to Youtube and have it look like ***.
YouTube suggests uploading as MEG4 (Divx,Xvid) format.
Is there a simple setting for that format within Compressor 2? What about QT player (I don't have pro, only QT v7.2)
    Any thoughts?

The consistently best looking stuff I've uploaded to YouTube has been from Compressor preset H.264 LAN.
I had tried the compress-to-flv route and that worked great, but then YouTube changed its format, so it was back to H.264 LAN...

  • Converting XviD movies for iTunes

I have quite a few XviD music videos that I would like to import into iTunes that I can watch with Apple TV. I purchased QuickTime Pro yesterday and I exported a couple of videos, one to QuickTime Movie (.mov) and one for Apple TV (.m4v) to see what the difference is.
    A 50MB 4 minute XviD clip exported to a 140MB Quicktime movie.
A 44MB 4 minute XviD clip exported to a 74MB Apple TV movie.
    My questions are:
Is the quality of the .mov better than the .m4v?
Is there any other benefit (for iTunes or Apple TV) of one over the other.
I would like to group these into iTunes with some organization, but currently they both show up in the Movies section. Is there a good way to organize movies by artists?
    Thanks for your help!

You need to do get info while playing each movie ckip and report the bitrates not this info, which we kind of knew - reason: the H.264 could be 5 mb/sec for one and 1 mb/sec for the other, to be clearer. You can report what the AVI is , bitrate wise as well.
Though I think Big Endian is uncompressed audio and may take up a lot of room. The AAC is much more compressed audio.
Use MPEG Streamclip, export to MPEG-4 and pick the variouos iPod/Apple TV presets and make your life a LOT easier and it is free. Does batches of files too. I don't ever use QT itself, as MPEG Streamclip uses it as the engine.
iTunes won't have a problem, if the bitrates exceed the iPod limits they won't play on an iPod. I am pretty sure the Big Endian audio won't at all.
You can change a MOV file to a music video in iTunes merely by changing the setting under Video when you do get info on it.

  • Quicktime divx/xvid Component

I recently purchased QT7 Pro for Windows so I could encode in H.264 faster due to it taking quite long on my 1.33 G4. However, after I bought it I found I could not view divx/xvid encoded files. I thought no problem, I'll just do what I did on the Powerbook and download the component. Yet, I went searching for one and I could not find one. I am disappointed because many of my files are encoded in this and I want to re encode them so I can stream them using DSS. Is there anyway to view divx/xvid files in QT7 Pro on Windows? Could I install the divx/xvid codecs and copy over some DLL's or some other file for decoding purposes? Thanks for any help.

Why has Apple done absolutely nothing to correct the Safari crashing/hanging problem? I have always loved my Mac computers. We have 3 in my home now, but if they continue to do nothing to resolve this problem, I may jump ship. If they are release something so lousy, they might as well work for Dell instead of ruining Apple's good name.
I--we shouldn't have to keep deleting files and such weeks after they release such shoddy software. Their is a reason we mac addicts pay more for Mac products. We think they are superior to other computers, but they are going to quickly go the way of the U.S car makers if this continues.
I'm sure this will be deleted immediately. Shouldn't they be focusing on correcting the software problems, rather than silencing those who complain, and having the buyer of their product putting bandaids on their browser?
