H.264

If apple support H.264 and MPEG-4 part 10 wherein MPEG-4 part 10 is also known as MPEG-4 AVC, then is quicktime capable of playing AVCHD videos?

From what I can tell, no, QuickTime doesn't yet support AVCHD. Though the format uses H.264 as it's video codec, there's a lot of other work that will have to be done to support that new format. I'm sure it's just a matter of time, but as of today, apparently not.

  • Media Encoder CC exporting the wrong resolution in custom preset h.264

    I have two custom presets in Media Encoder CC.  The original file is an mov Lossless 720x480 from After Effects.  One is h.264 mp4 720x480 and the other is h.264 640x480.  When I encode the resolutions are 872x480 and 581x480 respectively.  Not sure what I have going on here.  The presets worked with the same settings just fine in Media Encoder CS6 on another computer.  Any ideas?

    It works fine with VLC using the codec avc1 , so the fix might be to use coreavc codec with mplayer, unfortunately mplayer-coreavc-svn from AUR does not compile :S
    Thank you

    It actually worked!
    Can't see what was the problem with mplayer but now it plays perfectly
    Thank you!

  • Unable To Use DVDSP4 Presets for HD-DVD in the H.264 Format

    I recently prepared a 23 minute slide show using Fotomagico from high resolution Hasselblad slides scanned in at 1200 dpi. Within Fotomagico I rendered the Fotomagico slide show to Apple ProRes 422 HQ, took it into Final Cut Pro 6.03 and added an intro and closing section. I then sent this to Compressor and selected the 30 minute HD-DVD preset which uses mpeg2. All went fine with the encoding to mpeg2 and I got a successful build and format out of DVDSP4 after importing the resulting .m2v file into DVDSP4. However, while the disk plays back fine in my Mac Pro it plays back with stuttering (audio and video) on my Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player. I used a Verbatim Datalife DVD+R, but several other discs from other manufactuers including a DVD-R disc showed the same problem.
    Please note that I have the latest firmware on my Toshiba HD-A2 and I have successfully burned RL HD-DVD discs using my PC and Windows software (Ulead's DVD Movie Factory 6+) which play fine without stuttering on my HD-A2.
    I then decided to send the project to Compressor and use the 60 minute HD-DVD preset that encodes to H.264. Once again Compressor successfully executed the encode of my 23 minute slide show and it plays fine in QuickTime or MPEG StreamClip. However, every time I try and import this .mov file encoded in H.264 using the Compressor preset for HD-DVD into DVDSP4, DVDSP4 brings it in to the assets folder, but after a couple of seconds DVDSP4 crashes. Using console I get a message that DVDSP4 quit unexpectedly due to a "segmentation fault".
    I also tried to take the ProRes Fotomagic project in Final Cut Pro 6.02 and send it out with Quicktime Conversion using the H.264 codec. Again I have a file that plays fine in QT, but when I try and import this .mov file into DVDSP4, I get the message "imcompatible format".
    In summary, I am completely frustrated after many many hours of work at trying to prepare an HD-DVD on red laser of my slide show in DVDSP4. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong, and I would be most appreciative of any suggestions anyone may have.
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom

    Am I the only person who has ever tried to use the Presets in Compressor 3 for encoding HD-DVD disks? I would like to use these presets for burning HD-DVD's to standard red laser media as I have done on my PC. With the mpeg2 Preset I can get nothing but stuttering video when played back on my Toshiba HD-A2 and when I use Compressor 3 to encode with either of the H264 presets, the resulting .mov file causes DVDSP4 to crash when I import the file. Has no one else experienced this? Does anyone have any thoughts on addressing these issues other than to go back to working on my PC?

    When I attempt to burn a DVD with an H.264 10.3Mbps file using DVD Studio Pro I get the following message:  "VIDEO_TS folder found in Build Location ....The Build Location folder contains a VIDEO_TS folder(standard DVD content).  You must remove the VIDEO_TS folder from the Build Location in order to proceed with Build/Format of a HD DVD project."  The H.264 file includes both video and audio, and is a Quicktime movie.  If this doesn't work, is there an HD selection in compressor that will allow a 1080i video suitable for DVD?  I'm unable to find a VIDEO_TS folder linked to this video anywhere on my hard drive.

    Well, you first need to know that an HD DVD will only play on one of three things:  1) A Mac with a Superdrive.  2) A Toshiba HD DVD player...but those have been discontinued as they lost the battle to BluRay.  3) An XBOX 360.
    It won't play on regular DVD players...nor BluRay players.  If you want a DVD to play on a regular DVD player, you need to use the DVD BEST QUALITY presets...and know that it'll be standard definition, not high definition.  If you want BluRay...you need to get BluRay authoring software, and a BluRay burner.
    You can use Compressor to author a BluRay playable disc...it just needs to be under 30-40 min...

  • H.264 does not work well on quicktime

    hi,
    as the h.264 files can not be played smoothly on my mac which is a powerbook G4 running 10.3.9 with 1.5GHz cpu, 512M memory, I'm thinking is it the issue about processing power?
    cos I downloaded a same file in two resolutions: 480P and 720P.
    Although none of them play smoothly, its clear to see that 480P one is a bit smoother than 720P (sound is perfect for the two).
    and I tryed the files on my friend's computer running windows, theres no any problem at all.....
    any suggestions?

    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html
    Your older machine just doesn't have the CPU power to view modern HD QuickTime files.
    Try 480 sized files but expect some frames to be dropped during playback.

  • PP CS4 Problem with exported H.264 .mp4 video. Can't AME do proper encoding?

    Trying to export a Video of ~60mins using the H.264 Codec .mp4 which converts in AME successfully, allthough when playing back the f
    ile, it has problems after ~40mins. When i try to jump to a later point in the timeline to playback i.e. 48th minute or 50:10 or wha
    tever, the image freezes, audio continues and it takes 10-20 secs untill the video image continues.
    I tried different playback programms like VLC,Windows media etc. and different compressions 2-5Mbps as CBR and VBR1 / 2, nothing cha
    nged.
    Source is Sony DV and i have some still images as .png. Since the first 30mins work alright, i thought i try out if something with t
    he source material in the timeline is causing the problem , so i cut after the 30st minute and copied the first 30mins behind that
    to get a 60mins video, but exaclty the same playback issue after ~40th minute.
    Is this an most likely a problem caused by AME using H.264 .mp4 Codec?
    Other videos i did months before in the same way using the same source material worked fine. Adobe Premiere and AME is up to date!
    Thank you

    hmn sounds like it makes sense. I have seen that "i-Frame in GOP" somewhere in PP i think.
    Allthough i recall that i had videos i exported which played fine till the end with no delay at a later seek distance.
    I noticed that quicktime player has the same issue but is much quicker than VLC.
    Is there a work arround or alternative? Can it be improved?
    I need H.264 & .mp4 for webpodcast on vimeo.com
    The only thing which looks strange to me ist that the lenght of the delay showing the images (i guess finding it) takes almost the same time
    as on other later point like at the very end. Id assume that if its normal behavior the delay should become bigger and bigger with a later point in time ?
    Appreciate your time to answer jim,Thanks

  • How do you re-encode h.264 video without artifacts?

    Hi
    I have a video that was exported out of Premiere using h.264 at max 20mbps. All is good. Since the export takes 10+ hours I now want to create a version for Vimeo and Youtube. Becuase of the file size I don't want to upload the entire 2GB file to these services (I have a 5GB week limit upload at Vimeo) so I'll simply bring the file back into Premiere and export it using the Vimeo or Youtube setting with the max mbps around 5mbps or so. When I do this the resulting output file is unplayable, lots of artifacts and stutters. Some blacks are white even. I'm guessing Premiere is having an issue becuase it's re-encoding an already coded h.264 file, or something like that. Any ideas why this would happen and any solution to producing a good output?
    Cheers.

    As Dave stated, re-compressing already lossy-compressed video directly into another lossy compressed format is never a good idea: In this instance, image quality will degrade severely from that of the original AVCHD video. And all of the suggested intermediate files for Windows habe their disadvantages: DNxHD (and possibly UT) invoke the Apple QuirckTime API that induces a severe gamma shift in the encoded video (in the worst cases, whites come out medium-gray and middle tones come out pitch black) and is very slow to process due to it being restricted to 32-bit operations. Lagarith requires a massively powerful CPU - far more powerful than even a heavily overclocked i7-3960X - just to even play back well (this is based on my experience with Lagarith and my heavily overclocked i7-2600K, which dropped frames massively on playback of Lagarith-encoded material).

  • Can I Import H.264 Video Without it Looking Like Garbage?

    I realize that FCE is made for DV, but I've got some nice footage (shot in BetaSP and digitized in a pro edit facility) that I want to import. The original looks really great, but whenever I import into FCE or transcode to DV using QT Pro, the footage degrades so badly that I can't believe it - it's truly not usable.
    My clips are currently in .mov files in H.264 (720x405 res). I have to be doing something wrong. Any help would be appreciated!!

    Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert it to Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC or Apple Intermediate Codec. I did this recently and the results were very good.

  • Momentary gamma shifts in PS-CS6 composed image h.264 video

    Before I finalize a bug report, wonder what others are seeing?
    Having discovered the problem in a more complex scenario, I've narrowed down to a simple set of jpg images placed sequentially in a video group, and exported as an h.264 video from Photoshop PS6. All is on Windows 7 Professional SP1, all software involved completely up-to-date.
    I first noticed the gamma shift using the 'High Quality' preset. It occurs with variations on Vimeo 29.97 and Youtube 29.97 presets. The gamma problem does not occur on HD 720p or 1080p 29.97 presets.
    When I view the resulting video through Quicktime, I see a gamma shift for a moment on the first image, making it look washed out. After another moment, the gamma goes back to normal. On other players such as Windows Media or VLC, no such shift is visible.
    Interestingly, the shift comes at 1 second when exporting to the Vimeo 29.97 preset, or 'High Quality', while at 3 seconds on Youtube 29.97. Similarly, the shift back occurs at 2 seconds, or 6 seconds for Youtube.
    What the gamma shift looks like sounds like the now age-old Apple Quicktime fault on h.264. -- except it occurs only for one or a few seconds, then reverts to proper gamma, instead of continuing..
    With the simple setup of single image (jpg) sequence, it occurs only on the first image. With a more complex scenario, some actual videos included, I've seen it occur on every jpg -- or on some -- in a sequence.
    This is very repeatable here - 100%. Anyone else who's noticed it? I'm on the CS6 trial, and still thinking whether to purchase, or go on the Creative Cloud.
    Regards,
    Clive

    We're seeing a worse issue when exporting in H.264 and playing in QuickTime 10.0 (Mac OS 10.6).  We are using a custom size video to fit a spot on our website (398x498).  When exported and played in QuickTime 10.0 the white inverts throughout the video (back and forth).  The same issue is not seen when viewed in VLC or QuickTime 10.1.
    This is how the video should look:
    And this is how they are appearing:
    But like I said, the issue is very specific to QuickTime 10.0 on Mac 10.6.  VLC, Flash, Chrome, FireFox all play it correctly.

    indicates there is a missing library on your system. What problems were you having before that caused you to delete Safari? How did you delete it?
    You're best bet in this case is to re-install the OS. While doing a re-install will not normally harm your user data having a good working backup in cases like this is essential.

  • Has anyone been successful importing h.264 into Encore?

    First, my system and goal:
    A MacPro with 2.66mHz dual core and 12 gigs of RAM.
    Multi Terrabytes of space.
    I shoot on a Panasonic HVX-200, edit in Final Cut Pro and output Quicktime files as the basis for rendering to DVD and Blu-ray. I shot this stuff in 1080i. The camera codec is DVCPROHD and that is what I output to also.
    I am trying to burn Blu-ray discs. I have an external Pioneer BDR-203 Blu-ray burner and it works fine.
    I have done my tests and have decided that for Blu-ray, h.264 is far superior to mpeg2 in look and file size so I am sticking with it.
    Here is the issue (and I have scoured this forum area and found no one discussing or solving this issue to date):
    I have made hundreds of different DVDs with DVDStudioPro and am very familiar with it. Not to get off on a tangent but my beloved Apple has decided to betray me by not supporting Blu-ray (the ONLY way to output HD for us independents) so I studied up on Encore and have been using it to format my latest project to HD. The interface works pretty nice and even has some superiority to DVDSP but you have to have the patience of JOB to see your results. 5 Day (Remember. That's 24 Hour Days) Rendering is my tops so far. (OK. Full Disclosure... the documentary is 3 hours and 15 minutes long BUT DVDStudioPro took the same Quicktime files and crunched them down to mpeg2 for the DVD in about a day) Anyway about 6 days ago I had a 3 day render session that crapped out on me as it was finally recording to disc. For some reason it didn't like the BD-RE disc I had in the machine and just bagged the whole process. When I put in a new disc it just started rendering All Over Again. After that debacle I gave up on that method and now am rendering to BDMV folders which I then burn to disc using Toast. (While I am writing this my fingers are crossed that it will make it to the end - it's been another 3 days...)
    I provide the details above to show why I am more than dismayed that I cannot figure any way to import h.264 files INTO Encore from another renderer. Either Compressor or Encoder render much faster than Encore. So I have tried render my project to a variety of output types from both Apple's Compressor and Adobe's Encoder with no joy any way I try.
    (as a side note I am also dismayed that when I made a change to a MENU, Encore decided to encode The Whole Project Again rather than just the menu part...)
    One of my latest file testing adventures was based on a theory that the problem has to do with DVCPROHD recording to 1280 x 1080 anamorphic rather than 1440 x 1080 (the "expected" frame size for 1080i). I fooled with that a half day but could not get either renderer to generate any test material from my FCP output that Encore would burn without re-rendering. By that I mean I cajoled and tricked Compressor and Encoder to output 1920 x 1080 files; 1440 x 1080 files and 1280 x 1080 files (all h.264) to see if Encore would recognize any of them without re-rendering them. No Luck.
    So. Has anyone had success importing h.264 into CS4Encore from anywhere (but particularly using the same or similar gear I am using)? The Encore literature really doesn't give you much to go oon.
    Lately I am very inclined to think the problem has something to do with this 1280 x 1080 DVCPROHD issue but I can't say for sure. I offer that as a suggestion if anyone else with a similar production stream is having the same problem and maybe it will trip a switch in their mind for a solution.
    I like the Encore interface and design possibilities you have by swinging back and forth from PShop and After Effects but using Encore's renderer is like Chinese Water Torture.
    Thanks for your help.

    Brian,
    I got your test file into Encore and got Encore to show its Blu-ray transcode status as "Don't Transcode".

  • Mpeg2 blueray gives me better quality that H.264 blueray

    When I use the set prests for H.264 - blueray that CS5 has in the media encoder the quality looks a little poor? But when I use the Mpeg2 -blueray option this gives me a quality identical to the orginal HDV footage. Everywhere I've read people say that H.264 is a better format. I made no changes to any settings in the media encoder. And that was my result. Does anyone see what I see?
    When I created the Blueray in enocre I made one small clip in H.264 and one in Mpeg2. Mpeg2 was night and day better. The H.264 files looked bleary when motion was faster in the video. When the image was near static or stationary the image from h.264 was clear. When I watched the mpeg2 file on the blueray it stayed sharp and clear the entire time identicle to the orginal HDV footage. To give you an idea I have Dish Network HDTV and they use mpeg4 wich is I'm guessing from what I've read is H.264. I get the same thing on there. If the image is still not alot of motion clearity is very sharp and HDTV looking, but when a lot of motion is involved the quality is a little bleary, not blurry (bleary which in my definition is between clear and blurry.).
    I've learned that the h.264 makes a smaller file than mpeg. But it appears if I change the bitrate setting on mpeg2, and take the bitrate down a hair from the defaults I should be able to get a 2 hour video or near 2hr video to fit on a blueray and at the quality I want.
    Anyone with some advice or know what I'm talking about? I'm new to the HD world I've just upgraded to Production Premium CS5 from Pro 1.5 and Encore 1.5. So video formats and the settings for these and the way premiere exports is way, way different than I'm used to. Any help would be appriciated.
    I would like to know which formats are best and what setting I should use to get the best picture, It appears that I've found it with mpeg2 blueray but would like input from someone.
    -James

    James,
    I'm not sure about the format of the commercial Blu-Rays but I'm defenetely using MPEG-2 for mine as similar to your observations this gives me the closest image to the original files using the highest possible sampling PrP allows - 40mps.

  • How do you watch and record a live h.264 stream at the same time using fmis and FMLE?

    I've read all the similar post but could not find a solution that actually works, and please no "just use the dvr or record on the FMLE suggestions" as neither will work for me.
    Some posts I've read suggest naming the stream in the FMLE to something like mp4:mystream.mp4 or mp4:mystream.f4v but then you can no longer view the stream, and according my the admin console the stream will not even publish using this syntax.
    I can view the published stream if I name the FMLE stream to something like mystream.mp4 or just mystream, but then it doesn't record at all or records as a FLV file depending on how I code the main.asc file.
    Here's one version of my main.asc, this one correctly publishes the live stream after the client triggers the joinStreams function but will not record it.
    application.onConnect = function (client, userType)
        trace("userType is " + userType);
        this.acceptConnection(client);
        //this.clientCount++;
        client.joinStreams = function (channel)
            trace("joinStreams on channel " + channel);
            liveVid = Stream.get("livevideo/" + channel + ".mp4");
            liveVid.play("hdvideo/" + channel, -1, -1);
            liveVid.record("append");
        client.clearStream = function (channel)
            trace("clearStream on channel " + channel);
            liveVid = Stream.get("livevideo/" + channel + ".mp4");
            liveVid.play(false);
            delete liveVid;
    I've been working on this for 48 hours straight, please advise.

    I think lets keep it simple, will explain what you have for watching live streams and recorded streams
    Live Publish and Play:
         FMLE Settings:
    Video Codec: H.264
    Audio Codec:<any of your choice>
    Server URI : Please put your server uri with application name here , for example i will use "rtmp://myServer/myApp"
    Stream name: livestream
        Subscriber Settings:
              Server URI :  "rtmp://myServer/myApp"          Stream name: livestream
              Mode: "live" ( i.e. ns.play("livestream",-1,-1,true)
    Playing VOD H.264 file:
         Subscriber settings:
              Server URI :  "rtmp://myServer/myApp"
              Stream name: if file name is "sample", use "mp4:sample", if file name is sample.f4v, use "mp4:sample.f4v"
              Mode: "record" ( i.e. ns.play("mp4:sample.f4v",0,-1,true)
    For DVR (Record-in-progress stream)
    If you are using FMLE and want to use "Record" option of FMLE then you need to have to dvrcast_origin application and subscrier needs to FLVPlayback 2.5 component
    If you want to use that option, do let me know i will give details later.
    For now we will use simple server-side code and FMLE as publisher.
    main.asc of "myApp"
    application.onPublish = function(myclient,mystream){
         mystream.record();
    application.onUnpublish = function(myclient,mystream){
         mystream.record(false);
    FMLE Settings:
    Video Codec: H.264
    Audio Codec:<any of your choice>
    Server URI : Please put your server uri with application name here , for example i will use "rtmp://myServer/myApp"
    Stream name: mp4:mydvrstream.f4v
        Subscriber Settings:
              Server URI :  "rtmp://myServer/myApp"          Stream name:  mp4:mydvrstream.f4v
              Mode: "live" ( i.e. ns.play(" mp4:mydvrstream.f4v",0,-1,true)
    Try out above and let me know if that works or does not work for you.

  • How do I convert an .mp4 h.264 file into a simple Mpeg 2 file...

    I've had Quicktime for quitesometime now.
    I'been been through many QT versions but version 7 series, I think has problems.
    I've been dl'ing .mp4 files, with h.264 codecs.
    Quicktime plays them wonderfully but I'd like to put the movies on my media servers and stream them to my network dvd players(thin-clients).
    They can stream mpeg 1 and 2 great, as well as Xvid, Divx, and even VOBs'.
    I installed Quicktime 7 along time ago, and tried an export to many different data file formats. I would either get no video or no sound. I have just about every codec needed to do any conversion to Divx or Xvid.
    I also installed 3ivx.
    Can anyone tell me how something so simple can be so difficult? QuickTime, if it plays it, and shows that its capable of exporting to different formats, should be able to do the job.
    Beleive me, I know what your thinking. I've going as far as formatting, reinstalling Windows XP Pro, Updating, etc many times just to try to re-encode these .mp4 files into something big, yes, a large RAW file. Something that can be easily converted into anything else such as the basic old Mpg 1 or 2 file...
    Please, any help would be apprecaited!
    NeuroPsyche

    I tried ffmpeg but it just doesn't seem like it does a very good job at converting. I dont know why, but I think its because the .mp4 file has 6.1 sound or that new acc codec.
    I'm not sure about it, but when I do use ffmpeg, the sound doens't come out.
    Thanks!
    Dave.
    QuickTime doesn't have the capability to export to
    MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, at least not without third-party
    codecs (and I'm not aware of any for Windows for
    those formats, though there could be some somewhere).
