H-REAP experiences

Hello everybody!
For budget reasons, I am planning to deploy a Wireless solution over the WAN using H-REAP, my topology will be:
* WLC 5508-50 in the main Site
* 03 Remotes Sites : (5) AP 1141 each/site
* WAN Remote:      MPLS-VPN Bw:1024,  RTT< 20ms (From the main site)
I concern how it would be the performance, so
Have  Somebody had some similar experience with H-REAP? or Any other H-REAP deployment with more than 3 AP in the remote Sites ?
Thanks for any comment.
José Luis

You should be fine with your setup.  I have multiple clients running H-REAP.  One client with 25 sites and from 2-5 1250's in H-REAP.  Also have schools with remothe sites 30+ H-REAP.  You ping times are reasonable for this type of install.

  • H-REAP and Client Load-Balancing

I'm told by Cisco that H-REAP does not support client load-balancing.
We have a situation where we want to deploy LWAPPs using H-REAP into a conference room where training would take place.
Any suggestions on how to overcome the inevitable slowness these people are going to experience from being unevenly associated with the APs?
We can't re-write the application so we are looking for a wireless solution.
Anyone hear about how other organizations have dealt with this type of situation?
I'll be glad to supply more details if I am not being clear in my description of the problem.
Thanks in advance. All responses will be rated.

This is the functionality which is missing in H-REAP: Client and Network Load Balancing
"Radio Resource Management (RRM) load-balances new clients across grouped lightweight access points reporting to each controller. This function is particularly important when many clients converge in one spot (such as a conference room or auditorium) because RRM can automatically force some subscribers to associate with nearby access points, allowing higher throughput for all clients. The controller provides a centralized view of client loads on all access points. This information can be used to influence where new clients attach to the network or to direct existing clients to new access points to improve wireless LAN performance. The result is an even distribution of capacity across an entire wireless network.
Note: Client load balancing works only for a single controller. It is not operate in a multi-controller environment."
I suppose if we limit the number of users that can associate with a particular AP then we will achieve some client load-balancing. Though a hard limit on the number of end-users will also lead to situations where some end users will not be allowed any access.

  • Multiple SSIDs over H-Reap

It has been suggested that when using H-REAP it is only possible to operate with one SSID, I need to run a corporate SSID and a Guest one, does anyone have any experience of doing this?

I'm using H-REAP for my data and voice and it's working fine. I took the controller down and no one even knew it.
Depending on your firmware, here's the GUI/CLI H-REAP Configuration Guide:

  • IPad & 3502i WAP wlc 5508 H-REAP

I have a wierd situation occouring at a new remote location.
    Here is my scheme.
    At my phyiscal location =WHQ
    wlc 5508 (7.0.98.0)
    vlan 800
    ssid KWD-Guest
    open authentication
    wep 48bit key
(ACL restricted to internet only access)
    Remote physical location = 80NY
2821 router (12.4ios) - routes and dhcp for the locations networks.
3560-48 switch     - user connections and WAP connections.
3502i WAP - H-REAP back to WHQ for management and configuration.
    Remote physical location = 1441NY
3825 router (12.4ios) - routes and dhcp for the locations networks.
3560-48 switch     - user connections and WAP connections.
1131AG WAP - H-REAP back to WHQ for management and configuration.
Here is the issue we are running into.
At 80NY the users want to connect to the guest vlan 800 ssid KWD-Guest with iPads and smart phones (model unknown).
They can see the ssid broadcasting. Try to connect to the ssid, input the wep key. wait, wait and time out on dhcp, giving themselves a 168.x.x.x addy
From the router side, I can see the dhcp request on the correct vlan hitting the correct dhcp pool.
The router hands out a valid ip address and associates it to the correct wireless devices Mac-Address
But as I said the client times out waiting for the dhcp address.
Now the kicker here is that the very same iPad and smart phone CAN connect to the guest ssid at 1441NY which is also hosted off the same 5508 at WHQ.
The only difference I see is the WAP model and the network addresses I hand out at each location.
To the best of my ability I have double checked my router/switch and controller/WAP configurations against each site to make sure there is a mirror in place.
    Any ideas?

    dmantill,
Good morning and thank you for linking in the pdf.
I read it and hit several of the hyperlinks included in the pdf.
While I found the information useful and informative overall I did not really see anything that explained or covered the issue I am encountering.
I have a SR open now and the TAC engineer wants me to capture some debugs on the client mac. Once I can get the local tech onsite again we will perform the connection attempt with the debugging enabled.
FYI this is what the engineer wants to see.
Here is the information that I need to see when the problem occurs:
Disable/Disconnect the wireless client from the network – wait 1-2 mins
Open Telnet/SSH session to the WLC CLI - (Use Putty/SecureCRT with logging enabled)
    type: Debug client
Turn the wireless device back on and let it authenticate/associate to the wireless network.  Once the client experiences the problem, disable the debug process using the command:
    debug disable-all

  • HELP! Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Collector's Edition Preorder

    Hello!
I went to a Best Buy store a couple of weeks ago when the preorder finally showed up on bestbuy.com to try and preorder Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Collector's Edition (sku 3675007) in the store. On the register when I took up the sku, it said "This game is not available to preorder, please continue with regular sale".  Apparently someone has to turn on the preorder for any game and this was maybe missed?  Is there anyway someone can fix this so we can preorder the game in store please?  I don't want to shop online at all for games.  I want them the day they come out, just like a lot of other gamers.  I really don't want to go to another place to put down $5 on the game, but if I absolutely have to I will.  I love shopping at Best Buy, but the gaming experience has really been disappointing in the past six months in the stores.  I'm not trying to complain, just trying to purchase something that I normally would've been able to get from Best Buy six months ago.
Please help so I can continue to shop at Best Buy for the video games that I love.
    Nick

  • New Project - New Problems or The day the Reaper died

Ok, this is more like telling a story than a cry for help.
The story is about a new project, new (great) results and the disaster that followed.
Well story starts October 21st with me upgrading rig 1 with new parts. They came for my Opteron165 setup which oc'ed nicely but didn't make it far enough. So board, cpu and ram of rig 1 (sig) got replaced by the following parts:
    The new cpu is an Athlon X2 5200+ EE (TDP 65W), 2.6ghz, 2x 1024kb L2 cache, 90nm, F3 stepping.
The board is from MSI (of course), a K9N SLi Platinum. Very nice board and luckily it is PCB version 1.2 which features a heatpipe while the older version just had a very bad cooling, passive aluminium heat sink. The older version is the one still to be seen on MSI product site.
The new one looks therefor way better and stays cooler:
In addition I threw a pair of the finest ddr2 ram in it. A 2gb dual channel kit of OCZs new DDR2 PC2-6400 Reaper CL3 Edition. DDR2-800 with 3-4-4-15 (stock), guranteed to work with 2.3volts.
So suppositions for oc were great and I started:
First of all upgraded the bios from 1.8 to the latest 1.10. Then I thought why go step by step, why not starting big. So I set HT clock to 250mhz, resulting in a cpu clock of 3250mhz (multi 13), Hyper transport link set to 800mhz (x4), ram very relaxed (divider 667, 5-5-5-15 2T). It didn't post but I thought solution is easy, forgot to set extra voltage for cpu. Next try at 3250 mhz with 1.25v and set 0.1v extra in bios. It didn't post. I set voltage to maximum but no luck. Tried again but this time I lowered the HT link to 600mhz (x3). Now it posted even with 1v extra and it also booted XP but seemed to be not very stable. So set extra voltage to 0.15v which enhanced stability greatly.
After minor driver problems my old XP installation worked pretty perfectly with the new setup. Time had come to see if it was stable and I started Orthos. It seemed to be ok, 1hour no problems, 2hours, 3hours and bam... 3hours 40 minutes and that's it. I thought "Damn, but it will make it with more voltage". I added more voltage (0.2v extra) and started Orthos again but no way, at 4hours 32 minutes it stopped again.
I'm not easy to discourage and so I added 0.25v to the 1.25v vcore and tried another time. Still 250x13 = 3250mhz.
    And it worked!
Orthos now easiely worked six hours when I stopped it myself to see if it would also be stable with more intensed ram settings. I set ram divider to 800mhz (1:1) resulting in DDR2-929 and timings to 4-4-4-15 2T.
I started Orthos and left the machine alone... Outstanding 16 hours later it was still working!
After 17hours 5 minutes and 50 seconds of running Orthos I knew I had a stable beast!
It also worked with ram set to divider 667 (resulting in 406mhz or ddr2-812) and 3-4-4-15 2T. However 1T was a real killer, thats why I left command rate at 2T and were happy so far.
Performance was really good and I wanted to know if this would increase my 3dmark06 results which were already great with old setup because of nicely oc'ed 8800GTS 320. The opteron could do 9572 3dmarks with it.
The new setup easiely broke the 10.000 points by reaching 10306 points with cpu at 3250mhz, ram at ddr2-929 (4-4-4-15 2T), vga as seen in sig.
It really seemed to be finished. The rest would be just playing around and going for suicide clocks. At least that was what I thought at that time.
Before maxing it out I wanted to have the Vista 64 Ultimate installation also running with the new setup. I hadn't booted vista since upgrading to the am2 system, so I tried for the first time....
AND NOW EVERYTHING GOT F***** UP
Vista welcomed me with a blue screen instead of a logon screen. I was pi**** but aware it might not like changing from NForce4 SLi to NForce 570 SLI. Next step was trying safe mode but vista thought of blue mode and showed a screen of that colour. I thought "ok, maybe you dislike setup change" and so I went for a clean install. I even formated the partition and gave it a go. Installation was fine 'til first start. Well, it wasn't a start to be honest as vista told me it was not able to do this. Repair wasn't successful either.
Assumption was now system is not making the oc clocks although proved to be stable under XP. So I removed any oc and loaded fail-safe mode in bios. Relaxed ram timings to 5-5-5-18. I started installing vista again, thought I could oc again when it is installed.
Oh boy, how wrong I were...  The 2nd installation turned out to be as faulty as the first and I tried again and again... After installation failed nine times I were finally discouraged.
I just wanted to boot XP for now, forget about installing vista and maybe ask here if it this was a known issue.
Well, I didn't get to see XP. I was just informed about a missing file that also prevented to boot safe mode. I took my XP cd and started automatic repair. After this was nearly finished the first errors and notifications about unknown, missing or corrupted files appeared. Although XP made it to finish install and booted successfully. But this XP wasn't a real XP as many things didn't work. I couldn't install drivers because loads of errors and crc crap made working with it impossible. Clear install time! But no way, same issues like seen in vista.
Now I were pretty desperate and I urgently needed an idea.  I came to the solution maybe I could try with single channel, using just one mem stick. I removed one and tried installing XP again. It worked without any issue. Even driver installation and other software worked without a problem. Now I were even able to install Vista.
But still I didn't know what caused all the trouble. I had three suspects: Mobo, ram, cpu. I doubted in faulty board but cpu (failing to control dual channel) or the ram stick I removed were my favorites. As it was the easiest to try I put the other stick back in but used a slot combination that would cause single channel.  Booting Vista now turned out to be a disaster. Errors, corrupt files and so on. Same with XP.
Conclusion: Dual channel is not the problem. Added mem stick was now suspect no.1. I took the first one out and started memtest. Memtest didn't show errors after 8hours. I wondered and started Vista. Result was the same as seen before with two sticks. Errors and access violations. Replaced this stick with the other one and everything was fine again.
Next day I tried with a borrowed MDT 2gb dual channel kit which also worked without a problem.
Sad but true one of the Reapers is K.I.A. . Damn....
Now I'm sitting here with a borrowed kit of value ram which luckily allows me to let the cpu run at 3250mhz with mem divider at 667mhz (result: 406mhz) and which I can luckily keep 'til I get another kit of Reapers. I have to send my current Reapers back to vendor these days and wait for the rma process and wait and wait....
So what started greatly ended not so great. For now I'm sick and tired of seeing bios screens or installing windows and I'm also pretty pi**** because of all the data I lost. Some crucial ones among them.
Main problem remains: I have no idea WHY the Reaper died. I never set any higher vdimm than 2.3v what should be ok for it. It never felt hot and was directly in the main airflow. Also I have no clue why memtest didn't find any error with the faulty stick.

Be aware that you have to keep an eye on shader clocks when oc'ing the gpu. With common tools you're oc'ing gpu and shaders at the same time. Since I'm suspecting a misproportion of gpu/shader clocks to be one of the reasons for problems with factory oc'ed Geforce 8 you should try with different combinations. With the latest Riva Tuner you can change 'em seperately without having to mod the bios.
Memory is at it's end I suppose, that's the problem with most high end cards, no potential. Seems as you have to live with that.
That's true for HD2900 series I think but as far as I know 8800GTX needs it even for stable working.
Could be your psu is too weak, maybe really time for the new Corsair. On the other hand should be strong enough I guess.
You're ungrateful! That good old 3500+ oc'ed so well and was once a real performer and you call him crap.... bad boy.
"You're ungrateful! That good old 3500+ oc'ed so well and was once a real performer and you call him crap.... bad boy. "
yes you are right the CPU perform great, but its just old..(is not CPU fault in direct sense )
"Be aware that you have to keep an eye on shader clocks when oc'ing the gpu. With common tools you're oc'ing gpu and shaders at the same time. Yes im aware about it, but not this is the case.. i got instability even with 2Mhz on the GD more...SD remain @ stock 1350 and memory stock as well.. and go instability...
Reversed story if i put everythink is stock, but +2Mhz more on the memory i got the same instability....
"With the latest Riva Tuner you can change 'em separately without having to mod the bios."
hmm nope here, its locked increasing GD clock inscrease SD clock as well. they are locked and increased in parallel.(etc, both in same time)
"Memory is at it's end I suppose, that's the problem with most high end cards, no potential. Seems as you have to live with that."
mem. chips used are for 1000Mhz the VGA stock, MSI is not OCed them.. so they must have potencial.. also VGA is adverted with DOT... at least its designed to handle till 5-6% OC, i have done few review(don't trust much here, but anyway its an info) and user opinion no problem to OC till 2100Mhz(1050). So i doubt that is memory problem.
"Could be your psu is too weak, maybe really time for the new Corsair. On the other hand should be strong enough I guess."
Yes that is the only conclusion which i can stuck at the moment... Good news is that i have talked with distributor today and they ensured me that will delivered tomorow for me. So tomorow i will know more about that mistery when i install the more powerful(and hope so great) PSU.

  • For Users of WRT350N - My experience

For all you WRT350N Users out there, I thought I'd post my experience and tips gained over the past 7-8 months using the WRT350N since my WRT54G died.
I purchased the WRT350N obviously as a replacement for the WRT54G with extremely high expectations. Though I did not have any -N equipment as yet, I was planning on it. I did like the fact that it had the USB port. It was also a Linksys product so I expected the same good, reliable experience with it as I had in the past. I was upgrading some of my home office equipment and wanted to embrace wireless for all my peripherals (ie. get rid of the wires).
In the beginning, it was hell.
I suffered from all kinds of bizarre and cryptic events. The WRT350N was at 1.03.2. I had all manners of dropped internet connections, extremely poor wireless performance (WEP and B/G Mode). You've read the threads, I've experienced them all. I almost threw the unit out in total frustration. I upgraded to 1.03.7 about a month after purchase following the procedure outlined by other contributors on this forum...(You must follow the instructions to the letter).
Since then, the unit has worked as advertised in wired modes: internet connection has been solid and stable with no re-boots. The wireless piece has been a bugger running WEP and in B or G... still had 54MB/s when close to the WRT350N but this dropped considerably when the wireless device was moved to other parts of the house.
Well, I fixed the problem... and wireless piece is now running at 270MB/s (-N Mode) flawlessly throughout my house. See below.
So, what have I learned and is it of any use to anyone else?
First off, everyone's configurations, equipment, environment, needs and expectations are different, so take the following with a grain of salt. This is my experience.
    My Network and stuff:
    Cable Broadband - Cable modem
DellXPS-3.4Ghz (Desktop), 1 TeraByte drives configured for RAID 0, 1 GB Network card, lot's of USB devices hanging off it - everything running on MS XP - System is wired to the WRT350N.
Dell8100-1.5Ghz (Desktop), 500GB Drives, 1GB Network card and a bunch of peripherals - everything running on MS XP - System is wired to the WRT350N.
1 Terabyte USB External Drive used primarily for backups. Originally purchased to hang off the USB port of the WRT350N as a quasi-network drive... It can be configured and it does work. However, I had trouble with Norton Ghost 12 doing backups to the drive via the 350N USB port. I removed it from the 350N USB port and re-attached it to a spare DELL XPS USB port - no problems since. I also have a number of printers, three of which are directly connected to the Desktops.
I purchased a HP Photosmart C8180 All-in-one (good unit BTW) as a network (wired or wireless) color printer and for photo printing etc. It worked intermittently with the 350N when configured for wireless using WEP and in B/G mode. The printer, unfortunately does not support wireless in -N mode using WPA2 Personal-AES. So it is now wired with network connection at 1 GB.
Dell Latitude D600 Laptop... Frustrating!!! With the on-board Intel Wireless B/G, I never really got consistent, solid network or Internet connections via the 350N. It worked poorly with the 350N - wireless. It worked fine wired to the 350N.
Solution: I disabled the on-board Intel Wireless and purchased a Linksys WPC300N - It is a -N device. I really crossed my fingers with this purchase. Well, the card works. I get solid, repeatable wireless connection to the Network/Internet anywhere in the house at 270MB/s. I have had absolutely no interference from any of my neighbor's B and G routers. I have yet to experience any degradation in speed or signal. Use: WPA2 Personal-AES for security. Faster than all the other settings I've tried.
So the 350N works in my case, as advertised. My first -N appliance - the WPC300N card for the Dell laptop also works as advertised. I haven't hooked up XBox or fully utilized/explored all the other features nor have I set up the router for VPN (one step at a time).
So here's what I have in the configuration:
Under SETUP/Basic Setup: Internet Connection Type: Automatic configuration - DHCP
DHCP Server: Enabled - Use DHCP Reservation and assign your devices (MAC Addresses) to IPs
Under SETUP/MAC Address Clone: Enable. My DELL XPS MAC is cloned here (Must do)
    Under SETUP/Advanced Routing:NAT Enabled
    Under Wireless/Basic Wireless Settings:
    Network Mode: Mixed (b/g/n)
Network Name (SSID): Put your SSID here (anything other that linksys!) Radio Band: Wide - 40MHz Channel
    Wide Channel: 3
    Standard Channel: 1 - 2.412GHz
    SSID Broadcast: Enabled
I've experimented with the Auto settings here... it works but I got better results in my case with the above.
Under Wireless/Wireless Security: Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
    Encryption: AES
Passphrase: I put a name in here
Key Renewal: The default I believe is 3600 (works). I put in 7200 (works)
Under Wireless/Wireless MAC Filter: (Kind of up to you. For added security, I enabled it and put in my Laptop and other wireless devices MAC addresses here.
    Wireless MAC Filter: Enabled
Access Restriction : Permit PCs listed below to access the wireless network.
MAC Address Filter List : Fill out your applicable MAC addresses here. Under Wireless/Advanced Wireless Settings: AP Isolation: Disabled
    Frame Burst: Enabled
    Authentication Type: (Default: Auto)
    Basic Rate: (Default: Default)
    Transmission Rate: (Default: Auto)
    N Transmission Rate: (Default: Auto)
    CTS Protection Mode: (Default: Auto)
    Beacon Interval: 50
    DTIM Interval: 1
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2307
    RTS Threshold: 2306
    Under Security/Firewall:
Firewall-SPI Firewall Protection: Enabled Everything else - default
Under Storage: I had this configured to handle my USB Terabyte drive but since decoupled it for other reasons. It works and has worked as a Network drive in my case.
Under Access Restrictions: I left everything default here.
Under Applications and Gaming: I have done nothing here. Can't advise on port forwarding or the like.
Under Administration: Everything here is vanilla except under Management I have enabled Upnp.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers!

My WRT350N has given me very little trouble, however the storage link does not work that great. I definitly like the WRT350 router over my old WRT300. Thanks for the tips and info. I just wished that LInksys came out with firmware updates for there products more often that fixed bugs.

  • What's new in Java 5 & 6 (Experience programming coming back)

    All -
I've been away from Java for a year in the wonderful world of dynamic languages (ruby and python) but I've had 6+ years of Java coding experience. I've heard that Java 5 & 6 have added some pretty cool features like better for loops, block like structures, etc. I've been told that Java is starting to introduce features which give it a more "flexible" feel, similar to a dynamic language.
Anyway, for someone coming back, can anyone give me a quick list of the new WOW features in Java 5 & 6 that I should be looking to use?
    Thanks,
    Drew

Heh, not new but was a bit hopeful the the forum
environment had changed in the last yearMaybe if less people came and posted open-ended vague questions that they should have started looking with Google for information about so they could ask more specific questions.....
I mean I don't know. It was a dream I had once. Everyone was very nice here. People used google. Nobody pleaded for "teh codes". People used PreparedStatement. People stopped crossposting. Lazy students stopped lying.
    It was amazing.

  • A realistic assessment of your experiences of hardware needed for the type of editing I do please.

    Introduction:
I apologise for the length of this post but from experience of reading here, I'm working on the principle of the more I explain about myself now, the less anyone willing to help me will have to ask later.
I have lurked around this forum on and off for a few years, read the various threads in the FAQ section, particularly PPBM5 and What PC to build thread and other related topics around what system to build.  I have found them very useful and in particular have enjoyed reading about Harm Millaard's experiences First Ideas for a new system.  For about about 12 months I've been delaying upgrading my PC but in Mr Millard's latest updates on his PPBM6 site he talks about new systems and  provides a link to Intel's time line which suggests they are in no rush to replace the i739xx series CPU chip - which has I believe amongst other things 2 cores disabled.  Normally bitter experience has taught me not to rush out and buy the latest technology but let others "test" it first and then benefit from reduced prices as that model is replaced.  However, it now seems like last years technology is going to remain as this years technology and probably the first 2 quarters at least of next year and, if anything, the price of the i739xx series is at best staying at it's existing launch price or even rising.  So it's time to take the plunge for me and upgrade.
    My current hardware for editing:
I started with Premier 6.5 after I bought it as part of a bundle with a Matrox RTX 10 card - one of the most temperamental pieces of hardware I've had the misfortune to work with.  I later upgraded to Premiere Pro 1.5 and edited with that using a Pentium 4 2.6 (overclocked to 3.2), 3 hard drives (no raid) and 4G of memory.  The video footage used was avi recorded using a Canon MVX 30i and Panasonic NVGS27 and now I've added the Casio Exilim EX -FC100 (mpeg format) and a Panasonic HDC S90 (AVCHD).
My PC coped with the editing I did with avi footage but couldn't handle AVCHD format and this convinced me to upgrade to Premiere Pro CS5.5.  At the same time I switched to editing on a Dell XPS M1530 (Centrino duo chip) - I upped the memory to 4GB, put Windows 7 64 bit home edition on and replaced the existing hard drive with a faster one.  In addition I use a SATA Quickport duo attached to my laptop via an eSATA card.  However, either the Quickport, eSATA card or XPS is extremely temperamental - I never see two external hard drives, 50% of the time see 1 external drive or none at all - when that happens I edit around it doing things I can with just the one internal drive - but this problem is not my question.
The type of editing i do:
I know people usually say around here not to try editing on laptops and believe me, I understand why, but using this setup I have been able to edit lots of videos  - see here for examples of the type of editing I currently do:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/PathfinderPro
The equipment test videos place the biggest strain on the hardware when editing.  And, to do this editing I have to convert my AVCHD footage in to it's YouTube format before editing and even after I've done that it can be tediously slow to edit and playback even with premiere set to play at 1/4 normal quality.  To convert the AVCHD footage to the YouTube format I edit in has to be done over many nights.
Now I am not a professional, I typically edit with up to 4 tracks of video with additional tracks for titles and my target audience is YouTube - which is why I can get away without editing in my prefered option of native AVCHD video format.  However, I'm tired of all the waiting, stuttering, and many many days and hours of converting videos into a format I can use so I'm looking to upgrade.  My problem is though I'm uncertain what path to take.  The PPBM results are dominated by overclocked chips, and whilst the motherboard make and model is listed, the hard disks used, graphic card makes and models and memory modules are not.  This is not a criticism of the PPMB tables (big thank you to Bill Gehrke & Harm Millaard for taking the time and effort to pull this much information together) but for me, I am not interested in being in the top 1000 in the world, nor overclocking like mad, and having had horror experiences of using matrox products and compatibility and stability issues with other hardware I'm more interested in compatability and practicality than speed when deciding what to build.  I've also read the threads about marvel controllers, dual and quad channel memory support, the pro's and cons of SSD or standard drives, raid setups, the heat problems with overclocking the newer ivy bridge chips and general build advice etc so I'm not coming here without having done some reading first.
The type of system I'm thinking of:
So far based on what I've read here, I've come to the conclusion - but I'm open to suggestion:
    - Chip - regrettably due to the cost and unlikely successor anytime soon - a 39xx (with appropriate cooler) because I want to edit in native AVCHD which seems to require the warrior type chip as opposed to the "economical" build regardless of what my target audience is and this suggests
    - X79 motherboard (which must have an old PCI slot such as the Asus Sabertooth and which has room for the cooler I'm considering).  As I will be carrying over my old terretec DMX 6 fire 24/96 soundcard - all my videos have their audio mastered in Audition using this card - best piece of advice I read was the audience will watch a bad video with good sound editing but not the other way round)
    - 4 hard drives plus additional hard drive for operating system using onboard raid controllers (not sure whether the operating system drive will be WD caviar black or SSD and can't justify cost of external raid controller for either my type of use or number of hard drives being used)
    - Video card - I can now buy a GTX 580 for less than the 670 - so not sure on the card especially based on Harm Millards observations that memory bandwith seems to be as important as CUDA cores
    - Case - I have an Akasa 62 case with room for 5 hard drives - I won't be exceeding that, and if I overclock it will only be by a little so is it really necessary to replace it for a Tower Case - although I would prefer a case with a front connection for esata so I may have to change the case regardless
    - Maximum memory 32G - so is it necessary to upgrade to windows 7 professional?
    - Power source - I'll work out when I've decided on my components.
    Help please:
For me it's video source/dictated software chosen and hardware/audience(youtube) dictates format edited in.  As I don't intend to change my camcorders format (AVCHD or mpeg) in the next couple of years and I'm not interested in having the "fastest" system around what I'm really interested in learning is:
what system setups people use now for doing similar editing to me
what make/models of the component parts in your system work well together
and if you do have a bottle neck in terms of hardware, where is it and what hardware would you change to  (not a dream model change, just a practical and realistic one)
I have deliberately not given a budget for the changes I'm intending because budget should not be the deciding factor in determining what I "need" to upgrade to for the "type of editing I do" - especially bearing in mind I've got by so far (admitedly at a tortoise pace) with by todays standards a standard spec laptop.  Basically I don't want a Rolls Royce to go shopping at Wallmart but I'm tired of walking there and carrying everything back by hand!
Thank you very much for any help / experiences people can share.

Thank you both for your prompt and helpful replies.
Mr Millaard, regarding your excellent article Planning and Building an NLE system, I have read it a couple of times now and it was your article which finally convinced me the time was now to upgrade but within it you said for good reason "Initial choice of CPU: i7-39xx with the intention to overclock to 4.6 - 4.8 GHz", hence my uncertainty about the CPU to use.  I have seen a video you posted here  - I think it was based on your cats (which I incidently enjoyed) so working on the editing done there (but not remembering if you mentioned what video format you used) and others who have mentioned many pro's for the i7-39xx I was leaning towards that - but I'm financially relieved at least - if the i3770 will do, although now with the possible recommendation by JEShort01 (sorry not sure of the forum etiquette for use of names) of the 2600K overclocked I'm a little bit back in the position of which is more suitable especially with the update to the i3770 being nearer than i7-39xx.  This still makes me lean towards the i7-39xx.
Regarding the editing, the match play you can see on the channel is indeed 1 camera basic edits - multiple titles used to provide the score board.  However, the coaching videos use mulitple cameras - 3 to 4 sometimes (another reason for upgrading to CS5.5 for the multi cam editing support) and the equipment testing video can use 3 or 4 tracks layered on top of each other other with each track having opacity settings and multiple motion effects and titles with occasional keying video effects added.  For example this video at approx 2 mins 50 and 5 mins 10 seconds.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1E5T7xo57c&list=PL577F7AB5E31FC5E9&index=13&feature=plpp_v ideo
Monitor wise I use dual monitor setup.  My laptop screen and I link out to an LG M2394 D for widescreen and I sometimes use an old Neovo F-419 for 3 / 4 editing.  I won't be using more monitors than 2.  If the 580 drops a bit more I'll probably go for that - although I'll have to make sure it's size isn't an issue for the motherboard combo setup.  Interestingly there is a thread shown on the forum home page which discusses the 570 vs the 660ti and the opinion was go with the 660ti which surprised me a bit.
Windows 7 professional it is then - I should have known that too - apologises for asking a question already asked.
"Accepted, your correct criticism of the lacking hardware info on the PPBM5 website. That is the overriding reason that for the new site http://ppbm7.com/ we want to use Piriform Speccy .xml results to gather more, more accurate and more detailed hardware info."
No criticism intended Mr Millaard - more an observation and I really look forward to that evolution with PPBM7.  I'm assuming the .xml results will use pre populated drop down lists people can select their hardware from - that way you can control and ensure consistent entries - downside being the work required by you to populate the lists in the first place and maintain them.
Thanks again for your help but I'm still unsure a bit about the CPU and video card though.

  • The Enterprise Mac: What works on a Mac based on my experience at SAP.

I've been a Mac User at SAP for 4.5 years and here's what I have running and what I know of that should work.
First, the stuff that I rely on everyday:
    <b>
SAP Portal in Firefox </b>- almost everything works. The navigation panel has a scroll bar in it, but is usable.  I have imported my SSO certificate from Secude's SSO solution on PC into Firefox, so I can access SAP's corporate portal.
<b>Firepass and Contivity VPN</b>- Both VPN solutions work with my PowerBook G4, although I heard that Intel based macs  don't yet work with F4 networks Firepass.  At TechEd Las Vegas '06 F4 claimed that this is now fixed and SAP has yet to deploy it.
<b>Windows Networking, File Servers</b>-  This works exceptionally well (except the resource links on mac use slashes (like web addresses) and in windows they use whacks (\).  Annoying.  I can authenticate agains the domain and even change my NT login password.  I use Dave from  <a href="http://www.thursby.com">Thursby Software</a>.   For proxy serving I use auto-configuration using a PAC file.
<b>Desk-top to desk-top sharing</b>- I use this everyday because I have both a Widows Machine (for Netmeeting) and I need to share files back and forth.  I can open the Mac from the Windows machine and the reverse.  Again I use Dave from <a href="http://www.thursby.com">Thursby Software</a>.
<b>Remote Desktop</b>- Working for a software company inevadably need to access servers via .  It works great!<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopclient">Remote Desktop from Microsoft</a>.
    <b>Microsoft Office</b>- I love it on Mac!
<b>Email</b>- I use Entourage, the Exchange client in Mac Office. Over all a good program but suffers from not being fully featured. My top two gripes are: You can book resources in Meeting Requests and you can't forward meeting requests!
<b>Wireless</b>-I use <a href="http://www.ipass.com/">iPass</a> for Mac and it works great when I travel! I can also automatically authenticate against SAP's corporate wireless network using 802.1x.
<b>Corporate Printers</b>- I use Dave from <a href="http://www.thursby.com">Thursby Software</a> again.  It works very well.  Others have had success without Dave.
<b>Collaboration</b>-  Webex works very well, and I have heard that NetMeeting has a Java client.  I haven't used it though.  Anyone?
    == What I heard works ==
<b>SAPGui Java client</b>- I also heard that it is far behind the Windows version.  Any comments?
<b>Secude SSO Java client</b>- Apparently the version we're using inside SAP is not an officially supported version by Secude.  My contacts there say that they are working on an official version in the near future.  Stay tuned.
<b>Windows Messenger</b>-  Apparently it was working in SAP, but it was taken down for security reasons... Don't know much else.  It sure would make my life easier when its up since the entire company is now using it.

    Hi Eric,
My experience on an Intel Mac is this:
    - Any <b>SAP website</b> that requires a security certificate does not work in Safari. I've been led to believe this is Apple's problem, and I can work around it by using Firefox, but still. In Firefox, there are issues with SAP's websites. In the forums, for example, and page will open in the middle, in stead of at the top.
    - <b>Windows networking</b>: the usual problem is OS X's inability to remember logins. It's fairly annoying to have to re-type my login and password every day. And at my current client I can't get to the network at all. I'll have a look at Dave, see if that helps.
    - <b>Office</b>: it works well, now that I've upgraded my MBP from 1 to 2 GB. Before it was sluggish, and in tandem with Parallels, it was physically painful. Now, even when both programs are running, they run just fine. Although Office could use some more of "the snappy".
    - I use <b>Mail, Address Book, and iCal</b>. It does what I need.  The only thing I'd be interested in is some way of plugging into my customer's address book to find e-mail addresses.
    - <b>SAPGUI for Java</b>: this works, mostly, but it is slow. Embarrassingly so. It's slow in general, but anytime a longish list needs to be loaded, it gets real bad. Try working in the ABAP editor with an include of 3,000 or more lines... Apart from the slowness, there are a number of missing functions for which I keep Parallels handy. Drag and drop is one, and on the 6.4 version, there was a GUI control that would make the GUI crash.
    - <b>Parallels</b>. I can't say enough good stuff about this. Parallels. Parallels. Love it.
    <b>Some other points</b>:
    - I'd be interested if anyone has installed NetWeaver 2004s under Boot Camp. I'm a bit wary of dropping $300 on a license for WinXP when it may not ever work (Parallels is running W2K, in case you were wondering).
    - At TechEd, I had the hardest time connecting to the Internet, even with Firefox. A few sites I could get to, if I disabled images, JavaScript, and Java, but most, even the common ones such as Yahoo or Google, I could not. I ran into someone else using a MBP, and she had no problems whatsoever. So obviously the problem was with <i>my machine</i>, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Most frustrating!

  • Error in installing Experience Manager.

    Hi all,
    I have installed -
    1)MDEX
    2)Platform Services
    3)CAS
    4)Document Converter.
    5)Deployment Template.
    6)Oracle Endeca Guided Search 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)      V31161-01
Everything is installed in a single local machine. The Endeca Reference Application is running fine also.
But when I am trying to install Experience manager -
Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)-
    xmgrworkbench_2.1.2.618087_x86_64pc-win32 -
it is showing the following error.
"All other Workbench installations must be uninstall before installing Workbench.
Please uninstall all other versions of Workbench before running this installer."
    My question is -
There is two components in https://edelivery.oracle.com-
    a)Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)      V31162-01      80M
b)Oracle Endeca Experience Manager Extensions 2.1.2 for Generic Platform      V31169-01      71M
Which one I have use to avail the experience manager's functionality (Template creation etcs ).
Or I have to use both the versions ?
What are the components need to be installed to work perfectly with experience manager .?
    Regards,
    Hoque

Hi Hoque. I know it is a bit confusing and we are working to simplify things in future releases, but you will want to install
    either
    Oracle Endeca Guided Search 2.1.2
    or
    Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2
but you do not need both.
Oracle Experience Manager includes Endeca Workbench and the Experience Manager tool and is the option you'll use when the deployment includes a license for Oracle Endeca Experience Manager. The Oracle Endeca Guided Search package includes Endeca Workbench and the Rule Manager tool and will be used for deployments that do not include Experience Manager.
If you're starting a new project, I recommend starting with 3.1 instead.

  • Improved user experience transferring from APF to webDAV volume

We've all experienced how files that we drag from our Desktops and drop on folders on the same volume are "received" at their destination and "lost" at their origin. They move.
Users in my organization desire a similar experience when dragging files from their Desktops to folders NOT on the same volume, particularly remote volumes; or ones mounted using a different protocol, like http (webDAV to be exact)--whether on same volume or not. They prefer not having to dispose of needlessly remnant files on their Desktops.
I'm responsible for providing a solution that delivers this experience. I suspect this will require an Applescript.
I have written one that is basically functional. It calls a handler within a folder action to delete files still selected after copying of them to the attached folder completes.
I include my script below. My interest in posting here is twofold.
First: maybe someone can help me make this script work better. I'm still learning, and I haven't gotten it to handle important cases properly.
Second: I wonder whether this has not already been done. I've looked at MacScripter, Applescriptsource, Apple Discussions, and certain individual scripters' sites; but keywords I've come up with haven't gotten me results.
In advance and for any assistance, thanks!
Here is my script. I know it fails if I get an overwrite dialog as a copy operation begins.
If in the Finder, deselection occurs or selection is changed as script runs, no files or wrong files get deleted. I've also had the script delete a file that never got copied to its destination when a permissions dialog came up.
I'd rather no one actually run this script. Just examine it.
The script gets attached to a webDAV site's icon that appears on the Desktop once connection is made. This seems to work like a folder; hence my use of folder actions.
That icon goes away if I disconnect, but I would need the script to work every time connection is made. There are probably other issues.
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving these_items
    call()
    end adding folder items to
    on call()
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set fileList to selection
    repeat with theFile in fileList
    delete theFile
    end repeat
    end tell
    end call

This OS behavior is there for a reason.
Good question. Thanks for noticing my post at all much less thinking critically on the subject.
webDAV site is to hold users' working folders. In our case, there will be a lot of dragging from Home folders (including Desktop) to webDAV.
The experience will naturally be compared with that of dragging files to the usual place for working files: a local AFP volume. Since drags to webDAV are going to fail by comparison on speed, I'd like to deliver comparability of the "move" experience.
What if your users want to copy (not move) an item to
    a network volume?
As for dragging to other volumes, only the webDAV site would have the folder action. I should have made it clear: I'm talking about getting this functionality only in the case of users accessing their webDAV-hosted working folders.
I can understand readers thinking my aim was to change OS behavior. My fault, the vagueness on this point.
Anyway, Cyclosaurus, don't get me wrong. It relieves me know about the command-drag feature--that's great!

  • SAP NW CE 7.1 SOA Experience Workshop

    Hi,
I want to work with the "SOA Experience Workshop". I have installed the server, the NWDS and the ES Repository correctly. The Probleme occures when I set the additional settings in the NWDS. I have imported the "SOA_Experience_1_0.sca" to the "Local Development". After this I selected all imported nodes to create a project. Next step I want to deploy all projects, but I get this failure message:

  • Lost Beats Audio Control Panel, Windows Experience Index and HP Power Manager on fresh install...

    HP Pavilion m6-1035dx, product B5S06UA#ABA
Please help! I installed a 240gb SanDisk Extreme SSD and a fresh install of Win 7 home premium 64-bit OEM. I did not reinstall the factory OS and all that goes along with it. I have managed to reinstall all drivers (it seems) but am having the following problems: 1) I have installed IDT HD Audio Driver sp56953 but it does not provide the Beats Audio control panel, any idea how to get it? 2) The Windows Experience Index will not provide a performance evaluation, something in the system is providing it with an error message when it attempts to rate the system and it stops. 3) I have installed HP Power Manager sp57398 and can bring up the control panel but the changes I indicate will not stay applied, when I bring up Power Manager again it show that no selections are made. I knew this fresh install was going to provide headaches, please help if you can. Thanks.

I suspect this may all be related to a common cause.
When updating the windows experience index, what is the error message you receive?
Has the video card driver been installed? It is necessary for the windows experience index to complete.
Also, ensure the HP Software Framework is installed.  It is under the Software Solutions category.
You did a clean install of Windows 7. Has all the software and drivers for Windows 7 from HP been installed? Here is a link should you need it.

  • A few thoughts and experiences after a few hours using my new ThinkPad E440 with Win 8.1

After waiting 36 days for my new ThinkPad to arrive, I guess I'm just "eh" about it after using it some. Here are some of my thoughts, opinions, and experiences I've had after using it for a few hours... Hope this helps other people.
I should not be surprised because I read all the reviews, but the touch pad really sucks. I hate everything about it, the way it clicks - it's so loud and clunky! - and it's insensitivity (and I adjusted this to be more sensitive). Thank goodness for the track point. I love that thing.
The touchscreen stopped working after a few hours of use. After I rebooted it came back. Is this a bad omen? Or did I inadvertantly turn it off? Is that even possible? I am new to Windows 8 so anything is possible.
The touch screen, when it's working, is not very responsive. It's MUCH LESS responsive than my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android phone or my LG G Pad 8.3 tablet. This is very disappointing.
I ran the hardware scan that is in the Lenovo Solution Center and got a warning under the category "Local Connection Test". I looked at the list of System Events and it's very long. The first application error event name is MpTelemetry. Response is "Not available". The next one is "PnPRequestAdditionalSoftware". Response is "Not available". And the list goes on and on and on for pages. I have no idea what to do about this or what it means.
Also in the Lenovo Solution Center, under Software, there is a Critical Alert that says I never updated Windows. But I did when it prompted me to while it was first booting up and it was updating and installing things. Where it says "To update your operating system, you must run Windows Update", I click on the Launch button and it takes me to Windows Update where it says No Updates are Available. Go figure. It also says there have been 9 Windows updates made to the computer. I guess I'll have to just always ignore that Critical Alert.
In the system tray, it says "ThinkPad OneLink Dock Detached!". I don't have a dock... So, yes, that's true, it is detached.   I'll have to hide that one.
I realize there is a Lenovo Recovery Partition on the hard drive but I would really like to create a set of recovery disks before I start customizing this thing, installing apps, and moving my files over. I can't find anything that tells me how to do it. Under the control panel, there is the Recovery icon. The only choice there for creating recovery media is to create a Recovery Drive, not disks. I'll post a separate item to get information on this.
On the positive side, I have had it in my lap the whole time and it's not gotten too hot for my legs. That's a big improvement on my old Toshiba Satellite Pro.
This locating the Fn key to the left of the CTRL key decision must have been made by someone smoking crack. Why would anyone in their right mind want to do this? We've had the CTRL key on the outer left edge like, FOREVER, why move it now?? This will be something that will take me a long time to adjust to - if I ever do. I use the CTRL a lot for cutting, pasting, and formatting things in Excel and Word. It's going to be a battle. I wonder if any software exists that allows you to redefine the keys? Speaking of location of keys, I keep hitting the Page Down key when I want the Page Up key. I'm used to the Page Up key being above the Page Down key instead of to the left.
After being told here in the forum that the fingerprint reader was not an option in the US I am pleasantly surprised to see one on my new ThinkPad.
I use the right-click on my mouse often. For example, to open a link in a new tab instead of switching to the new URL. For some reason, when I click on the right part of the touch pad when the mouse is located over a link, it just opens the new URL instead of giving me options for opening the URL. I'll have to figure this out.
So anyway, I guess that's more than a few things... hope this is useful to someone...

You can change FN and CTRL key in the BIOS
