H2.64 export settings - Muddy, grainy exports  Why!

Exports from QuickTime show no consistency?!?!?
I am using a Canon Powershot SD700 camera to shoot simple videos of friends mountain biking. The format is Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640x480, millions of colors, at 30fps.
The files are AVI which I import into iMovie 6.0.3 as DV format.
Granted the quality is just ok, but I need a very small, inexpensive camera that I can keep at the ready for crash footage, and it does what I need.
The AVI file is about 20MB for 10 seconds of footage (Data rate=14.82 mbits/sec)
For exporting I have been using the “Movie to QuickTime Movie” Broadband – High setting to produce 480x360 files. A two minute video with AAC stereo music included comes out to a 12MB file for 2 minutes of footage.
Here is an example of one of my videos and the quality I find acceptable for the web while still retaining some details.
http://www.joybean.com/BeansBikes/Moviesfiles/Sprain_Beat_Down2006.mov
The last few movies I have shot and created, using the same camera, computer and software have looked extremely fuzzy and blurry, when exported at the same settings.
So I took some original media from last year and re-imported it into iMovie. Did an export, and the new and old movie files looked exactly the same!
So it doesn’t look like the OS, iMovie or QuickTime has anything to do with it.
But this movie, where the original media files look clean (and shot on the same camera as the file above), has come out looking like garbage. Very muddy is the words I use to describe the midtones.
The data rate on both of these post files is just about 800 kbits/sec. Both are AAC stereo, 480x360, Millions H.264, 30fps.
http://www.joybean.com/BeansBikes/Moviesfiles/Rocky_Point6-22-2007bbhigh.mov
I have spent the better part of 8 hours testing different export settings to get the quality back to what I think is acceptable. Right now I am exporting at the default LAN/Intranet setting and changing the size back down to 480x360. Unfortunately the file size is twice what I was putting up previously.
Some other examples are at:

I appreciate any guidance an this, as I am totally stumped.
2x2.66 Dual Corre   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

A couple of thoughts...
• Think like a codec for a minute. When compressing video, encountering a tree with fluttering leaves is as bad as life gets.
• The "bad" videos were shot on bright, sunny, breezy days in a leaf-filled forest. That created a perfect storm of hard-to-compress video. The background is filled with dappled sunlight falling on in-motion leaves. There are scarcely two adjacent pixels the same from one frame to the next. It's very difficult for the camera to shoot well — the bright areas blow out and shadows go dark. Even harder to compress.
• The "good" video was shot on cloudy, hazy, shade-free days in the fall or winter. The forest has few leaves. The light is "flat" so there are many adjacent areas that are similar. It's much easier to shoot; much easier to compress.
• Although there's a huge difference in the "blotchiness" of these videos, there's not a great deal of difference in the appearance of the riders. Riders ride fast in all the videos, yet their images are consistently good. That too suggests it is the background content causing the problem.
My guess is that when compressing the "bad" video it will be necessary to increase the data rate significantly. It might also help to increase the number of key frames. Probably both.
I'd start by setting both the data rate and the key frames to the max, just to see what you get. If it looks pretty good, then try turning them down until the video starts going mushy.
Fortunately, you don't need to export the entire video to test various export settings. The content is consistent, so you can test your export settings on a small chunk. Five seconds should be enough.

  • PAL DVD WS export: why black bars at sides?

I am editing a 1920x1080 EXCAM HD sequence in Premiere Pro CS6.01 on Win7x64.
I want to export to PAL Widescreen DVD.
When I use the PAL WS presets to export from Premiere I get black bars on either side of the MPEG2 DVD footage.
    Why is this?
Both 1920x1080 and PAL WS are 16:9 (aren't they?). So why am I getting the black bars? Shouldn't the PAL DVD footage fill the entire width of the frame?
Any ideas why I get these black bars? And even better, how I can get rid of them?
    Cheers
    Mark

    Why is this?
Before the age of digital video, it was decided by technocrats that what we see in the end product (called the Clean Aperture) would be different from what was there in the original (called the Production Aperture).  They left off some pixels at the side when they made the calculation for the widescreen Pixel Aspect Ratio.  That process has unfortunately carried over onto digital video, and we're still using that same old analog PAR, instead of what we should be using when you calculate it for the entire frame.  This results in the black bars you see.
In CS6, this is easily overcome by selecting Scale to Fill in the Export settings.

  • Exporting Why is the color so dark

When I am working in AE CS3 the color looks great but when I export it Animation + with RGB Preserved, why does my colors look really dark? Is there a setting I am missing?
I am using an IMac with Intel prossessor. It also looks dark on my boss's HP PC. Oh and yes I am using the render Q

Also take into account that many office PCs are misconfigured, i.e. either forcibly toned down in brightness and contrast or simply because they are of low-price ranges (as obviously you don't need extreme stuff just for typing word documents and doing e-mail) ;-)

  • Ios iphoto "add a caption" removed if photo exported why ?

Where outside iphot can the captions be viewed
    - I've synced a photo folder from itunes to my ipad.
    - Worked on them all in iphoto so they are edited and given them each a caption
    - Now to get them to my computer I've decided to copy to camera roll.
    - I've reopened iphoto and it updated the new photos in camera roll but it has WIPED the captions.
I have seen the same if I try to export to itunes then reopen in iphoto on ipad.
What is the point of using captions in iphoto if you cant save them in any other app and read them. They are not saved in the EXIF or IPTC info of the image, as I've looked at that in Photoforge2.
When will iphoto for ipad get an update its workflow needs tweaks to make it amazing, it doenst need a re-write.
I really want to love this app stop making it hard to use it just isn't apple.

Apparently captions are used only in iPhoto. Not sure why.

  • Web galleries and Export why so sharp?

It has been hypothisized by some that Aperture does additional sharpening on export - I think it would be good for Joe to clear up if it's really doing that or what looks like sharpening is something related to downsampling instead, which I think is what you were also thinking.
Can you post a Photoshop downsampled version of one of the trouble images for comparison? You can open a duplicate version in an external editor, resize and save - when you go back into Aperture it will see the size for that version has changed. Then you can export that version as "Original Size" and it will pretty much be the same as the Photoshop version. I think if the resized version is not larger than the web gallery maximum size it will also pretty much put the resized version in place.

  • Jpeg export-  why do some become tiff-Mb files

Took 10 pictures in RAW. Minor editing in Aperture 3. Uploaded to Sam's Photo for 4x6 prints. 8 went as jpeg (small file), but 2 went a tiff (25mg). These 2 took a long time to upload. What did I do wrong and how can I prevent this tiff (large files) in the future?

I do move some photos to OnOne or PS (for editing), then back to Aperture. In Aperture I would select-all (click) the photos I wanted to send to Sam's for printing then drag the selected items (all at the same time) onto the Sam's web site for processing/priniting. Another thought - on occassion I would have to switch-out flash-cards during shooting.
Ah there you go both pieces of the puzzle solved.
You're getting the Tiff files in Aperture from the use of the external editor. In the Aperture->Preferences->Export window is the settings for what file type to use with an external editor I'm sure your setting is Tiff.
And then by dragging the file out of Aperture rather then exporting it you are getting the Tiff.
    IMPORTANT Point:
By dragging the files out of Aperture you are not really exporting them you are getting the Aperture generated preview (or in the case of the Tiff files the original). The settings in the  Export window have NO effect on the image when you drag it out. In all likelihood you are not getting the size and/or resolution you think you are.
You should be exporting the versions by using the Export Versions button in the Export window. Once the versions are exported to a folder on your disk you can then drag those to the print web site. This will ensure you are getting the image size and resolution you want.

  • Rendered text looks OK in premiere pro, but is poor quality when exported - why?

I have done a nice text animation in after effects.  Just a simple character by character fade on.
It looks good in AE, and when I import and preview it in Premiere Pro, it looks equally nice.
However, when I export it to a (high bit rate WMV), it looks poor and blocky.
All the other non-animated text looks fine.    Why is this happening?
    (I have CS3)

Well, with the information to hand I'm out of ideas.  I'd need more data to go further.  If you'd care to upload the export, I can take a look here, see what you see.

  • Master audio volume keyframes ignored in export - why?

I had the audio set to fade-in at the start and fade-out at the end via key-frames. During the preview works perfectly. Export to QT (H.264) and the audio fades are ignored... So, then I go back to the individual audio file and adds the fade keyframes to it. Erase the keyframe changes on the master audio track. Playback is good in both the preview and exported movie.
Why is Motion (2) ignoring the keyframe edits on the master audio?

You must set ducking clip by clip.
Also, the ducking seems to be set as a percentage of the volume of your main audio track. If your main audio track has some loud noises, the ducking will be a percentage of that, and your music may still overwhelm some of the softer sounds of the voice track.

  • Blotchiness on final render/export -- WHY?!!?

Take a look at the end, starting at about 5:24.
    https://vimeo.com/55421177
It gets blotchy while it's fading to brown, and then even worse once it hits brown.
    I'm rendering as:
    H.264
    Target bitrate: 15 MB/s
    Max bitrate: 40 MB/s
    29.97 fps
    1920 x 1080 px
    Key Frame Distance: 60
Now why in the world am I still getting this blotchy crap? I mean what do I need to do to get rid of it? I've already tried higher and lower Key Frame Distances. Bitrate shouldn't be an issue, as far as I know.

I'm not even seeing the blotchies unless I actually pause the playback. Could be system dependent (streaming speed, etc.)
Your bitrates seem designed for Blu-ray rather than streaming, way too high. I don't upload to Vimeo, but do they re-encode your material? How does the exported file look if you play it back directly on your computer, rather than through Vimeo?
My suggestion would be to try the Vimeo 1080p preset in AME, which is showing 5mbps data rate and 30 frame keyframing and see what that does. More is not always better.
Also, as the video starts to fade down at the end, there is suddenly a brightness shift, image gets brighter, might want to look at the edit and see why that is happening. That definitely jumped out at me, but did NOT see blotchies.

  • IPhoto converts RAW files to JPEG when exporting - why?

When I click and drag a RAW photo out of iPhoto it converts it to JPEG no matter where I send it. How do I keep it in its original RAW format so I can edit it in Photoshop? I have iPhoto 8.1.1.9(419) and OSS 10.6.2. The RAW photo file was captured using a Canon 7D.

Some more info for using Photoshop with iPhoto (applies primarily for editing jpgs and not RAW files)
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

  • Jumpy preview, render and export why? (Premiere Pro CS3)

Hi guys, When I try to import a small video that I took in my Sony CyberShot Camera DSC-S600 (in avicodec) it says my video is:
    MPG1 = MPEG1 (VCD).
    Resolution = 640 x 480 25fps.
If I just import that video, drag it to the timeline (below), and press ENTER, It will start rendering it without any effect that I've made, and in the playback it will like jump some frames in and out (some in reverse and then forward).
Also If i just import the video and make a playback, it will do the same, if I playback the video outside the premiere pro cs3 it will run just fine as it should be.
    My computer is a A64 3800+ 4GB RAM DDR2 800mhz, GF7600 gt 256mb is my video card.
(the video I'm importing is only 16mb).
Part of the video can be located in youtube, (see link).
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_73D3Rdbqk
It was saved in avi, then uploaded to youtube.
    please help me.

    > "...much anything that "also does" video really isn't the right tool for the job..."
If the camera video can be converted to Pro video, then it can be considered "the right tool." Jim, there are a plethora of situations where a compact still camera that shoots video is the right tool. It's your subjective definition of "the right tool" that begs up on an old paradigm. A fictional character, McGyver, never seemed to have the right tool for the job. In fact, the entire idea of invention is to create
    i or adapt
the right tool for the job.
That the misinformed come here with questions does not relate. Many more are informed, take the appropriate steps and proceed to tell the story. And move people. Or get paid.
For example: I use a still camera that also shoots video as a tennis instruction tool: A one hour tennis lesson involves recording the various tennis strokes, performing a few quick edits, and placing the results on DVD for the student(s). According to you, I should bring a tripod, a bulky mini-dv video camera, etc. I should take the time to set up the equipment, before my students arrive. I should also take time to move the tripod to capture the various different angles. After the lesson, I should take time (excuse me, real-time) to capture the mini-dv into Ppro and edit.
To me, the video camera is the wrong tool for this job. Instead, I whip out the still camera that also shoots video, walk around to get the angles, shoot the specific strokes requested. Oh-and as a perk, I can take several high resolution still photographs, with a single knob turn. Back in the studio, I dump the clip files on the timeline, w/o real time capture. And I edit.
Students love the video (they don't care/can't tell about the reduced quality--they're interested in their strokes), and they
    i also
    appreciate the stills.
If I were doing documentary or broadcast, a still camera that also shoots video would be a poor choice indeed. But, here, I'd be stupid to bring both kinds of cameras. However, before the CEs intervened and created just the right tool, I had to bring both. And I hated it.
It's a paradigm shift, Jim. You might not be able to understand it if you suffer from perceptualsclerosis.
And now the CEs have my mouth watering, with EX-F1. Blur the line.
    Keep Smiling

  • HT3574 My phone has no CELLULAR settings on it. Why?

No CELLULAR settings on my iPhne 5.. Why?

iCloud storage doesn't affect the available storage on your device.  It's for backing up your device and syncing your data, so you can recover the data if needed.
You probably need to import photos/videos to your computer or another destination (like a photo kiosk & burn CDs), and then delete them from your device.  Or, delete some unused apps from your device.

  • "Settings" menu item disabled - why????

i have a flash app which does audio recording via our fms server at influxis.com. so i do the usual stuff like try and open a microphone etc. when the app first loads it tries to find a mic, but the microphone library says the mic is muted. also, when i right-click on the app, the "Settings..." menu item is disabled. why? normally the user could select a mic to use via this dialog box. the only way to get it working is to open up another app that does video recording, right-click, select "Settings" (not disabled for this app!) then set the microphone settings.
my big question is why the "settings" menu item is disabled for my app???
    any help greatly appreciated

    thanks for that chris!
it's amazing, this issue has been hounding me for weeks, i have trawled the net to no avail, and yesterday afternoon, a few hours after posting, i came across a blog somewhere that posited this solution - i fired up flash, bumped up the height of my app, and hey presto! it worked! and this is exactly what you have found out too!
a bit obscure, but at least i know now what is going on!
thanks for asking around and finding out, and best of all i now know the exact minimum dimensions!
do you think this fact should be put somewhere in the as3 online doco? i reckon mention of it on a few pages like Microphone and Video classes could be very useful....
