H264 movie stutters in QuickTime

I have a 1GHz G4, and h264 videos, e.g. movies, play fine in VLC player--perfectly smooth, but most stutter terribly in QT. I just updated from QT 7.0 to 7.6.4, with no improvement.
Clearly the system is fast enough to play such movies, at least up to e.g. 720x400. The problem is, the latest version of VLC Player for PPC/OS 10.4 Tiger won't play the latest h264 variants. All you see are the keyframes every 10 secs (or whatever)!  QT 7.6.4 DOES play them, but it stutters and is totally unwatchable.
Are there any options to optimize playback in QT to fix this..? Or, can i perhaps somehow get VLC to use QT's h264 codec (that might not solve the problem if the decoder is what's slow). Thanks.

i did create a new file with the changes... that's how i know there is a difference.. the original works fine with not stuttering, but the edited file stutters... i did a total of 4 different files and all the edited ones stutter.
*Work Flow*
i just opened the file in quicktime, move the head to the location of the portion i wish to remove.. move the start and end thingys to select the portion i want to remove, press delete, repeat 'til all portions are removed.
don't have quicktime in front of me, but i think it's export.. save, saves as .MOV which stutters as well (tried that). export opens a dialog window.. chose MPEG4 in the combo box at the bottom of the window.. went to options and again don't have quicktime in front of me but they have an option for passthru for video and for audio chose that in both cases (could passthru be the problem? i've used it for audio before with no problem but not video).. change name.. export.

  • Quicktime h264 Movies stuttering on 2010 MBP 17" but  not on 13" macbook

I'm just trying to play movies in quicktime that are 720 H264 Movies. Not big. They are about the same compression and length as 720 apple trailers.
These movies play very well on my wife's 15" intel core 2.6GHz i5 processor with 4 gigs ram.
However on my friend's 17" MBP intel core 2 Duo 2.8GHz, with 4 gigs RAM, this movie nor any other can play in quicktime or isadora without dropping some amount of frames. She has about 357GB out of 500GB capacity available, so its not a case of a full drive. Isadora even turns on hardware acceleration when its running. I've started up the 17" MBP and reset the PRam, and tried only running quicktime but still this studder. This computer is supposed to be used for video playback during some shows and I need to help her solve this problem. I'll probably have to tell her to go to the apple store with my slower computers playing the same file better, but its a huge pain and I'd love to solve this at home. Any suggestions?
This file and others even play completely smoothly on my 13" MacBook Core 2 Duo 2GHz.
They all have 5400 RPM drives, updated quicktime 10 software, AC powered, updated OS 10.6.5.
the 17' macbook has Graphics card
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT as well as NVIDIA GeForce 9400
    The 15" has
    INtel HD Graphics and
    NVidia GeForce GT 330M
    the 13" has

Any idea why it would only just begin recently? I've never had a kernel panic until this past July, I just thought it might have been my new hardware.
As far as I have seen, that flaw rarely surfaced in Snow Leopard. It was not until the Mac was upgraded beyond Snow Leopard that it became apparent. Some did see it in Snow Leopard, but most of the ones I’ve seen (including my daughter’s) did not happen until a more graphics intensive OS was installed.
If you get pushback from Apple on repairing it for free, you might go through all the Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks forums and print out all the ones that said, “this only appeared after I upgraded to XXX.” Maybe you can argue the case that most were unable to find the flaw until they upgraded, so the three year limit seems to fly in the face of fitness for a particular purpose.
Also, some have noted that after exposing the flaw, downgrading to Snow Leopard did not “fix” it.

  • Error rendering H264 MOV in AE CC 2014

I'm having trouble rendering Quicktime H264 MOV files in both AE and AME.The rendering fails and the error message in AE says, "Rendering error while writing file... An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted (-1610153464)", and in AME, the render fails and the log says Encoding failed, unknown error. I've read online (can't find it now) that computers with a high core count will have trouble rendering Quicktime H264, and sometimes setting the Memory & Multiprocessing prefs to allow less cores will work, but I tried that and it didn't work. My computer has 36 cores, Has anyone had this issue and been able to solve it? Thank you for your help in advance!

I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • HT3775 I am trying to open a .mov file in "Quicktime" and it keeps saying it doesn't support the file.

I have made a movie in "Final Cut Pro X" saved it as a .mov file and "QuickTime" won't open it. It keeps saying that it doesn't recognize the file. Ironically there is another .mov file right next to it on the flash drive that opens just fine. I do notice that the one it does open looks like a little black box with a 'play' arrow button in it when I run the curser over it, but the one it doesn't open has a 'Quicktime' 'Q' in it.
I try to eject the flash drive and it says "Final Cut Pro X" is still using it, then it shows me a window that shows 6% progress. I am thinking maybe the movie is still loading. I really don't know.

    Try VLC.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.
    Imac 27 inch late 2012.
    Intel 3.4 GHz  i7

Try QT v7.x which is located inside your Utility folder.

  • Can't open .mov files in quicktime anymore

I can't think of any system changes that I've made recently but a few days ago I was able to open .mov files with quicktime and now I can't. I get the following error when I try to open one. Error -1856: an unknown error occurred (filename.mov) I've uninstalled quicktime, rebooted and reinstalled with no luck. I've searched these forums and googled the error number but can't find anything. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks.

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

  • Hide the title bar of a movie window like QuickTime X

Love the feature of QuickTime X of not showing the title bar/the control bar of a movie window (still waiting for Pro version, though. Is it coming out at all?)
I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way/tweak to hide the title bar of a iTunes movie window like QuickTime X.
    Thanks.

What child window are you referring to? Do you mean a browser window opened with web.show_document?
If so, you can use javascript to hide browser toolbars and so on. Search the forum for some javascript examples where windows are opened with toolbar=no.

  • Converting mov files with Quicktime Player for iDevices

I wasn't sure if should post this under iPad or here or at all as it is about coding, but it is about coding for Apple iDevices that can't display Flash, using Quicktime Player or QT Player 7 Pro:
I'm trying to add the ability for Apple iDevices that can't display tutorials I created in Flash, to see them with H.264. I read that I can simply open the original tutorial that luckily is a .mov file with Quicktime Player 10 in Snow Leopard and File > Save For Web and QT will convert to H.264 and also output several files needed to upload to your server.
But the only options are for iPhone, iPhone (cellular) and Computer. I assume an iPod would use the iPhone file, but iPad didn't exist yet.
I chose iPhone and Computer for my test. I got 2 .m4v files a .jpg, a small .mov and a .html page with the code I needed to copy/paste to my target html page.
Uploaded the files and could see the tutorial movie with my iPad fine. Using FireFox, I saw the beginning of the movie, then got the beachball. After a long wait, I tried a force quit and found that my Mac Pro was crashed too so had to hard shut down. Hate that.
Rebooted the computer. Tried accessing with Safari this time and it worked fine.
I also own Quicktime Player 7 Pro pre Snow Leopard (I'm running Snow Leopard now) and tried the conversion with it and noticed a few more config choices, like for frame rate. But the resulting code was about 29 lines of code with expected parameters versus 2 lines of code in the QT Player code which actually really surprised me. With both apps they have JavaScript references for the head tab to files on Apple's library on their site.
So.. I'm wondering why FF and my computer crash, I did output for computer as well as iPhone. And what to do for FF users and the fact that there's no specific output for iPad, am I OK just using the iPhone output since I can see the file OK on my iPad test.
Last, I've been reading about HTML5 versus Flash, but assume that what both my QT apps are outputting is HTML4. In the QT Player code there isn't even an embed tag, let alone the video tag I've read about, just a href to the exported Saved For Web .mov file, which I assume must point to the .m4v files that QT outputs and puts in the same folder as the other files, but there's no direct reference to them.
Sorry for the length, or if this isn't the place for these questions, but I do want to get this right before I convert about 20 tutorials
I wonder if I should wait until Lion and see if QT is changed to fix the FF crash and adds output for iPad?
One last thing: when you access the converted file with an iPad, first you see a jpg of the first frame with "Click to Play" in the center. When you do, you get the movie with a play triangle which you have to press to actually start the movie. But when you access the same html file with Safari, all you have to do is click the "Click to Play" and the movie starts as expected. Bug?

QuickTime X and QuickTime Player Pro create slightly different html code (but it all works about the same way). The "click to play" image file, a "reference" movie, multiple versions for different devices and the html code to preview the page and use as copy/paste into your Web page.
QuickTime X has fewer options than QuickTime Player Pro. The iPhone preset works just fine on the iPad.
Your Firefox crash may have been just coincidence and I doubt it was caused by the page code.
You may want to wait a while longer for the HTML 5 code because browser support is still in the learning stage and millions of PC users still use out of date browsers.
The reference movie points to the different versions of the file. The code "reads" the device and serves up the correct version for it.
I don't own an iPad but I suspect it works like my iPod Touch. All of my QuickTime files have the play "triangle" so the click to play image style page requires two clicks on it.

  • Can't view .mov file with quicktime

Hello. I need help viewing a .mov file with Quicktime 7.5. It was recorded on a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder and given to me on a dvd. But when I try to view the .mov file with Quicktime, I can hear the audio but the screen is black. Sometimes, it asks me to continue to the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d64 63&csubtype=69636f64
I'm not that computer savvy - what is wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry. My "then" (above) should have been "they".
They sent you a data DV containing the "source" from the camera and the HDV codec isn't available on your PC so you can't view the file.
Ask the authors to convert the file using H.264 Video codec (or others) so your Windows version of QuickTime can play the file.
