H264 with AC3

Hi,
I would like to export my FCPX HD videos using H264 video and AC3 5.1 multichannel audio in an appropriate container.
The reason why I am not using AAC multichannel audio is because:
- AppleTV does not support true multichannel AAC decoding (or transcoding to DTS, as recommended by the DVB);
- DVD or BlueRay burning software do as well not support multichannel AAC (just performing downmixes);
I made tests on Compressor doing seperate H264 and AC3 encodes, then mux'ing both components into one MP4 stream. Unfortunately, although QT, VLC as well as ATV can decode the stream, no disc burning software will accept this 'non-standard' component combination.
My questions:
- Is there a possibility within compressor to combine H264 video with AC3 audio in a appropriate container ?
- Is anybody aware of a DVD or BlueRay burning software capable to handle multichannel AAC as true multichannel (whether as discrete PCM channels or as an AC3 transcode) ?
- Are there plans that ATV4 will properly support AAC multichannel (whether as discrete PCM channels via HDMI or as a DTS or AC3 transcode via optical audio interface) ?
Thank you

I think I found the solution:
I inspired myself on the iTunes format .m4v which allows the combination of H264 video with AC3 audio.
Consequently there are several ways to proceed:
- export via FCPX using ProRes 422 and 5.1 PCM linear audio, then ecoding to H264 and AC3 using e.g. handbrake;
- export via FCPX trhough Compressor using seperate encodes for H264 and AC3, then muxing both compoents into a .m4v file using a mux tool such as Subler.
.m4v is indeed recognized by ATV, as well as by DVD/BD bruning software such as Toast.
a few points thought which I would recommend Apple to considered:
- Compressor should allow to directly create a .m4v file with H264 video and AC3 audio (currently not possible)
- Quicktime should be updated to correctly display within inspector the status of the AC3 decode. Indeed, presently quicktime will decode a 5.1 AC3 but will display it as a 'stereo' audio, which is not correct and misleading. VLC shows for instance the correct Dolby format...
- it's a pitty that iDVD does not support AC-3 passthough or a transcode for AAC to DTS or AC3, because multichannel audio is quite standard for DVD's and most MAC users will have video files with multichannel audio.
- ATV should support multichannel decoding of .mov files using multichannel AAC, whether via discrete PCM channels on the HDMI interface or via a DTS (or AC3) transcode via the optical audio interface.
Thx and best regards
Steve

  • Anyone get Front Row/Quicktime to work with ac3 sound?

I've searched and searched and tries various codecs and components, but I still can't get quicktime or front row to play sound on .vob files or mpeg-2 files with ac3 muxed in audio.
    Video plays, no sound.
    Has anyone cracked this?

QuickTime is hopeless at playing surround sound, it is hopeless at doing multiple audio tracks, and is hopeless at doing subtitles.
VLC, and even Windows Media Player (for Windows) do a better job.
However, there is one small hope for Mac kind. FrontRow 2.0 as will be included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will add the ability for FrontRow to play VIDEO_TS folders (that is copies of DVDs). It will not however use QuickTime to do this (as detailed above QuickTime is useless at this), instead it uses the same DVDFramework that the Apple DVD Player application uses, and therefore like the DVD Player will be able to do AC3, multiple audio tracks, and subtitles.
Apple should be embarrassed over the fact that QuickTime; supposedly God's gift to multimedia is a hindrance and not a help in this area.
Note: According to Apple's website, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard will include the same QuickTime 7.2 version as is current in Tiger, therefore we will not see any improvements in QuickTime in Leopard (at least not at the time of Leopard shipping).

  • Why does my iTunes not play Videos with AC3 passthrough?

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my iTunes on my Mac (recent iTunes, recent OS X). As the title says, I can't play videos, that contain AC3 Audio. If I try to play a video with AC3 in iTunes, it just doesn't start playing. When I jump to a later chapter, it just shows one still frame but it doesn't start playing. QuickTime plays every video without any problem. I tried it with (self-encoded) Full HD (1080p) and also SD videos.
QuickTime doesn't have any problem and also my 3rd Gen Apple TV streams the Video without any problem from iTunes... moveis I bought from the iTunes store also work without any problem in iTunes, as they all contain an AAC-Audio track. I didn't recognize that issue before I updated to Mountain Lion... or maybe to the latest version of iTunes.
Does anybody know what possibly is the reason for that and how to solve it? Thank you!

OK, I found another thread here, where my problem has already been solved. It works fine now. For everyone who got stuck on the same problem and finds my thread first, here's the solution, that helped me:
    - download A52Codec.component
    - move it to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ and replace the existing file

  • MPEG-2 file with AC3 5.1 audio: no audio (neither in current video playback, nor after encode), but plays okay in QuickTime X

    Mavericks 10.9.3
Latest Mac Mini, 8GB RAM, two 256GB SSD
    Compressor 4.1.1
I have an MPEG-2 file with AC3 5.1 audio which plays in QuickTime X as expected.
I have a second MacBook Pro with Compressor 4.1.1, where the audio is fine - both as current video playback of the source, and post-encode using Apple Devices HD (best quality) setting.
However in the Mac Mini Compressor there is no audio (neither in current video playback of the source, nor after encode using Apple Devices HD (best quality) setting).
    Troubleshooting
    - main difference between machines is the Mac Mini has Elgato software (EyeTV and Game Capture HD)
    - I've checked the QuickTime components are same on both machines, except for EyeTV audio component on Mac Mini
    - there are no plug-in audio components
    - I've repaired permissions using Disk Utility
    - I moved Compressor to trash, deleted compressor plist files, and reinstalled

  • My DVD Movies with AC3 (Dolby Digital) to H.264

    Hello,
i want to use QT to convert my movies from DVD to a H.264-file with
    ac3 sound.
The Apple-FAQ says, that i need QT Pro and the DVD2Playback module,
but AC3 sound has no support (for playback too).
Ok, VLC show me H.264 movies with AC3 Sound coded with Nero Digital,
a Windows software. So for me it is possible to put AC3 sound into a mp4 container.
    So i have some questions:
    1. What kind of Mac program can i use, to merge (mux) a H.264 mp4 file and a AC3 sound file ?
    2. How works the DVD2Playback module, read it automatically all matched
vob files after selecting the first one ? Because the DVD main movie is splitted in three or four vob files.
    3. If not (see point 2), what kind of Mac software can i use to merge h.264 files to one ?
    Thank you and
    regards
    F.

This freeware program will export both the video and ac3 sound to other formats, like DV Stream and others. It also will allow you to edit out portions without require you to re-encode mpegs. It works with mpeg-1 by itself and with mpeg-2 if you have the Apple mpeg2playback component.

  • Settings for h264 with multichannel audio

Hi everybody, I would need to export h264 with 5.1 audio via Compressor. The exported movie will be played from computer connected via HDMI to Onkyo reciever.
In Final Cut I have 6 audio tracks assigned to the corresponded channels, I tried to export with h264 preset with audio set to AAC 5.1. The weird thing is when I open the exported movie in QT, movie inspector tells me there are 6 audio channels, but when I bring the exported movie back to FCP there are only 4 audio tracks.
Does any of you have experience how to export the h264 with 5.1 audio to make it playable correctly from PC? Thanks.

Check; in FCP, in the Sequencer Settings (Control + 0), did you set the audio preset to the *5.1 preset* AND did you then manually set all the groups to *Dual Mono* AND did you set *each audio track* on the Sequencer (right-click on each of the 6 audio tracks) to their *respective channels* (e.g audio track 5 should be set to audio channel 5).

  • Transport with AC3 Possible

Not well versed in Compressor. First attempts have yielded no success in building a Transport Stream Mpeg2 file with AC3 audio. Can someone detail how I achieve this?
    Seth

MPEG Streamclip has no option at all for MPEG2 output...
In case, I didn't give enough information:
I have Quicktime Files (and other file types).
Need to Create MPEG2 Transport Files that have AC3 Audio.
Compressor Can do MPEG2 TS Files but won't let me change audio from mpg to AC3.
StreamClip Can read QT Files but cannot export MPEG2 Files at all.
HandBrake Can Read MP4 Files but cannot export MPEG2 Files at all.
Trying Episode Encoder Trial to see if it does it.

  • Why doesn't Quicktime Support MPEG-2 with AC3 sound?

Last summer I bought a Mac Mini so I could use iMovie and iDVD to convert and edit my 20 year old VHS tapes of family events to DVDs. This Christmas I got a Samsung DVD Recorer-VCR unit that easily copies VHS to DVD in MPEG-2 format with AC3 sound.
So, I'm all set to use my Mac Mini and begin my family archives project - or so I thouhgt. I found that Quicktime and iMovie don't read MPEG-2!! Then I was relieved to find that there is a plug-in that works with Quicktime Pro that will read MPEG-2. I spent the $50 to download these 2 programs and sure enough Quikcktime Pro will now read the MPEG-2 files from my Samsung unit. However, there is no sound!!!
Is Apple purposely making it impossible to do what I'm trying to do?
Why doesn't Quicktime or iMovie support MPEG-2 with AC3 sound?
Is there some other sound format that is normally used with MPEG-2?
Why would someone create software that reads movie files but doesn'rt read the sound that goes with them?
If I can't hear my little girl sing on these movies, then this whole project is a big waste of time and money!!
I hope someone from Apple can give me some answers.
    A frustrated father,
    R. Leifield

FWIW, MPEG is a distribution format, not an editing format. The best way would be to convert VHS to DV, edit it in iMovie and burn THAT to DVDs.
Sure, MPEG is a nice compressed format taking much less space than DV but the compression takes away quality.
IMO the best approach with MPEG source would be to edit (yes, it CAN be edited) it with apps like MPEG Streamclip (very limited editing features) or Capty MPEG Edit EX (more features) and author the edited MPEGs via apps like Toast, DVDSP, Capty MPEG Edit, Sizzle etc. THEN you won't lose any quality (unless some of the GOPs have to be re-encoded, that is).
BTW, unlike QT Player, MPEG Streamclip can play also AC3 or PCM audio in MPEG files.

  • Is it OK to have some tracks with ac3 audio, and some with AIFF?

The reason I ask this is I decided to do my DVD with AIFF audio, to keep the quality as high as possible (it's a tutorial series for some music software.)
I have been using the Compressor preset for "Best quality 150 minutes - 4:3" to encode my video, and the video looks fine for my needs. And I was using the AIFF part of that compressor preset for audio.
However, now having got the entire Disc 1 of the DVD together, I'm slightly over the size limit for a Dual Layer (it's maybe only 110 minutes per layer, so I figured using the 150 minute preset with AIFF would be close) - but I was over by about 160 mb.
So I took the longest chapter and encoded just that one chapter in ac3, and knocked off 200 mb, and now it will supposedly fit.
So my question is: is this allowed? Can you have all chapters (tracks) with AIFF, except one chapter with ac3, in the same DVD? There is only one audio stream. Thanks....

    OK Then, Stephen,
Then it's even worse than I thought. If all your clips are playing from start to finish, one right after the other then they all need to be one mpeg stream in a single track (I am the only one having trouble with this? ). You've got a single movie, friend.
Currently, the way you have it set up is - after every clip in each separate VTS (Track) finishes playing, the player's laser has to back up to head of the playing clip (where it started) enter the VTS IFO area (language domain) and get the command to go back to the head of the disc, just as I outlined before. The command to get to the next Track is at the head of the disc! So you just jumped all the way across the surface of the disc to get a command that will take you back to where you just were, unecessarily (Note: It's a DVD Specification rule that there are no jumps between VTS's allowed; only through the Video manager at the head of the disc, resides near the inner hub, can you route from one VTS to another).
Why not create an ultra compatible DVD?
Remember, DVD players are going for as little as $9 these days. Not all are created equal. The mechanics of how a laser works is very rudimentary. If you release lots of DVDs nationally and / or internationally it's best to make your navigation as easy on these players as possible. Trust me on this. My recommendation keeps the players laser on the platter throughout all the clips. What your proposing adds, unnecessarily, extremely risky jumps back and forth across the disc, after every clip (jumps are OK, but only for a reason).
I've had projects come to me for proofing that were set up similarly to yours that were slated for a quarter million replication run. They redid the project according to my direction - to the letter (I'm nicer in person ). This happens regularly.
If this is your only release, then you may as well go out with a bang, by doing it right?
Or never mind, it's your DVD. Of course, the proper startup action and layer break placement, and other parameters are probably out of whack, too (not your fault, you're new), and none of that information is in the manual.
It was good to meet you, Stephen and hello everyone! I've been "kinda busy", as they say the last year. Still 7 days a week in everything DVD and Blu-ray, but I do check in from time to time.

  • Cant get Audio with AC3 on maverick

I can not play the audio on any movies with  AC3 audio, I am on Maverick, Is there a codec available?

Sounds like you need to set up your audio tracks as D-TDM channels. Please consult the manual as to the details on setting up a TDM system in Logic.
I went to the audio menue click on DAE no sound.
It does not work this way. Enabling DAE simply tells Logic to make available the DAE drivers. You still have to set up your playback channels to use this driver, instead of the CoreAudio one.
Somtimes it says hardware in use when there are no other programs are running.
    Garage band works fine.
Probably because it only uses one audio driver at a time...
I have also uninstalled and reinstalled logic a few times
This does not, nor will it ever, solve an audio driver issue.
Really, once you understand how to set up an HD system in Logic, you'll be set. It is not easy, but they do provide an extensive explanation in the manual.
I suggest you start with an EMPTY Logic song, and disable the Core Audio, and only use the TDM and D-TDM drivers to set up your environment. It will be a lot easier to set up this way, instead of trying to modify and existing song. Once you "get it" on the empty project, modifiying existing songs will be a lot easier.
    Cheers

  • MPEG videos with AC3 audio in iMovie

    Hi there,
Aplle seems to totally ignore AC3 audio streams (at least in MPEG videos)! Why?
My JVC cam corder records *.MOD files on its hard disc. Those files
are in fact MPEG2 files, but with AC3 audio.
Renaming the files makes them playable using the Quicktime Player, but
    without the sound
MPlayer is able to play them correctly, but that does not help me,
because I want to use the videos in iMovie and iDVD.
I tried installing the 'AC3 Codec.component' (what is supposed to fix
    the problem for AVI files)
and now I installed Perian, which does not do the trick either.
I can ofcourse use ffmpeg to convert the files, but that means a
quality loss and a lot of work I wanted to save by buying a Harddisk
camcorder, so I could skip the time consuming conversion from DV tapes
    to mpeg.
I there anybody out there with a solution?

QuickTime doesn't like to play the multiplexed sound on mpg videos. The QT Plugin ONLY supports video playback and NOT the audio track of such content (as you have found out).
I suggest you look at VisualHub software ( http://www.techspansion.com/ ) to convert your files to DV. It works with my problem mpg-4 files with multiplex audio. It runs in a free trial mode so you can verify it does what you want before buying it.

  • Very sloppy playback with AC3/DTS Hardware Decoding with

I just bought the Audigy 2 ZS (plain)
I tried playing back DVD movies using SPDIF output on PowerDVD and I get VERY VERY sloppy playback, both with AC3 and DTS audio.
I thought it should perform better than my previous SB Li've! 5.

Which settings are you using and what kind speakers do you have? If you have analog speakers, are you doing the decoding with the software or with the soundcard? Check for the card whether AC3 decoding is enabled (in the Device Controls). If it isn't, try enabling that and setting the DVD software to SPDIF instead. Or if it's enabled, set the decoder to disabled/SPDIF, and set the DVD software to 5. and see if it's the same.
If you're using digital speakers then both should be set to SPDIF (so decoders disabled).

  • Compressor M2T with AC3?

I'm trying to transcode a .mov file using Compressor.  I need a M2T video with AC3 audio.  I can't seem to change the preset.  Can you help me?

I had thought taking two elementary streams (from Compressor), muxed in MPEG Streamclip would give you what you need for your server. Can almost get there, but, unfortunately with a .ts extension. Try changing it to a .m2t extension and see whether it works, but I'm not confident.
Possibly Telestream's product can do what you need; check out the trial version of Episode.
    Good luck.
