H323-Voice-Quality explanation

I understand that the h323-voice-quality VSA conveys the calculated ICPIF factor, which is supposed to be a positive integer. However, on many occasions, this VSA contains the value "-1" or "h323-voice-quality=-1"(In fact, it appears in some examples of this very web site). What is the meaning in this case? Clearly, it can't be used but there must be some reasoning behind it that I'd like to know. Same goes for the value "0", which is unrealistic when codecs other than G.711 are being used, and for any ICPIF value over 50.

The value should be in from 0 - 34 not -1.This should be calculated from the icpif for the call. Two caveats with
this value. First is that it relies on rtcp (which for example our ip phones do not support). The second is that the call needs to be longer than 10 second in duration. If neither of these conditions are true, you should expect it not to be set; or as shown as -1.
As a workaround try upgradig the IOS to the latest one.

  • Voice quality problems on iPhone 5s with IOS 7.02 on Verizon.I

I have a brand new iPhone 5s with IOS 7.02 on Verizon.  Everything works great except when on talk on the phone the normal way.  When I do that, people tell me they can hardly hear me.  But, when I put them on the speaker phone, they can hear me very well.  Also, Voice Memos, and SIri all work just fine.  It is only when I talk on the phone the normal way (without the speakerphone on) that the voice quality I am transmitting is very low.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  Thanks very much.

Apple helped me solve this problem.  They gave me a brand new iPhone 5s.  The were just great in their support.  It appears that my first iPhone 5s had a faulty "audio chip."  This is the chip that changes the frequency of your voice as you talk into the microphone; Apple explained that it is one frequency when talking on the phone, and another where using the speakerphone, and another when using Siri, and another when using voice memos, etc. You use the same 2 microphones for all of these applications (one at the bottom of the phone, and one my the camera lens), but the "audio chip" adjusts the freqency based on the applicaiton you are using.  So, on my first iPhone 5s, my "audio chip" was defective, so they gave me a new iPhone 5s, and it has been working just fine.  I had the most current IOS operating system on the original iPhone 5s with the faulty "audio chip," and on my new iPhone 5s which works great.  Hope this helps.  The technicians at Apple Customer Care and at the Apple Store are very aware of this problem with potentially defective "audio chips" in some of the iPhone 5s's.  Cheers, Clarence from Cleveland.

  • IPhone 4s - Battery issue and poor voice quality

I had bought my iPhone in May this year. It was working fine till i think a week back battery started to drain quickly at 10% every hour. I have configured office exchange account for mail and accessing global exchange contacts, Google account as exchange for contact sync and iCloud. i dont keep any contacts on exchange, keep in Gmail only. Was Android user earlier.
I read a lot of posts and tried all solutions such as turning off timezone service in location, turn off and delete all email accounts, kept manual sync for emails, ran the battery down till switch off and charging back to 100%, removed apps i doubted could be syncing data in background, turned off locaiton service totally, turned off calendar, turned calendar notifications, turned of iCloud reminder, notes but no effect. Wifi and Siri are also off.
I notice today that I am getting small circle near operator name rather than E symbol (for edge)and at the same time voice quality of person on other end is bad too, can hear small cracking , clicking sounds, voice breaks. Otther person can hear me properly. I get back E symbol in some different place than my desk. I havent changed my desk so thats not a possibility either.
Someone had suggested queued network thread with exchange can cause the issue so Installed System Activity Monitor app but it doesn't show battery graph or which process is taking CPU or network time. Moreover, it shows 4-5% less battery level than on top in disharging mode !!
Used to get good stats of what is eating the battery in my old HTC Desire but iPhone doesn't offer such feature to diagnosis. Ideally should not be required if phone works as expected.
What do I need to do to get battery life and voice quality back? I will try voice again at home just to rule out bad network at work.
    Thanks,
    Ashish

Well, most of what you did is black magic, and has nothing to do with battery drain. But we have no way of knowing how your battery life is below what you think it should be. What are you using it for, what apps do you have, and how much Usage life do you get (settings/general/usage).

  • Bluetooth voice quality - LG Cosmos 2

Frustrated and wondering where to start.  New car (Honda CR-V) and new phone (Cosmos 2.)  Bought the phone solely because my original (very old) phone wouldn't "pair" with the new car's bluetooth.  The Cosmos has gotten past that, makes & receives calls, phonebook has been imported and everything works fine except for one (major) thing:  The outbound (phone user's) voice quality is horrible.  All garbled, almost not understandable to anyone on the other end.  Inbound voice (played through the car's speakers) is fine.  So where do I start?  I'm anticipating that Verizon will tell me it's a Honda problem and Honda will tell me it's a Verizon problem.  I'll almost bet on it.  Any solid, unbiased advice on what is actually likely to be the problem, and how to fix it?  Thanks.

You would test outbound voice quality using just the phone not Bluetooth from the same locations to determine if the problem is with the phone and Vzw service OR if you only experience the problem when connected by BlueTooth wireless and thus the built-in mic in the Honda.

  • Really freaky problem with mic voice quality on calls

With my old headphones getting, well, too old, I decided to buy new ones, and so I did. The problem is, when I tried using them, my friends told me (while laughing non-stop) that it sounded like I was speaking from afar and with the typical headphones of fast food restaurants workers that make your voice sound weird.I thought it was the headphone's fault, so I changed them today, but the exact same thing happened. I thought maybe it was cuz my old ones worked on a USB connection, and the 2 new ones with a jack cable, but a friend told me it didn't make any sense and, furthermore, I tried calling him on Skype and he actually could hear me perfectly! Then I went to try again with my friends and, for them, it still sounded insanely weird as always (disclaimer: no, they are not pulling my leg). I disabled the automatic configuration of mic in audio configuration, played with the slider, whatever I could see in the options. I'm completely bewildered because I don't even know if what's happening is a problem, an incompatibility of my PC with jack headphones, or what's going on.I would appreciate any sort of insight.

Hey there, Skymoose! I'm glad to see that you're managing your device. No, I can't say that clearing the cache would impact your voice quality. The cache is merely a temporary memory storage function. Do you use a headset of any kind with your device? If so, does this issue occur with and without the headset?

  • 7921-CME Voice Quality Issue

    Hello,
I am running into an issue at customer site which is going on for over 30 days.
They have consistent voice quality issue with 7921 phones.Have checked their phone webpage and see that jitter value increases to 500 during issue. Sometimes I see tcpretransmissions too,

I have even collected sniffer off wireless but not able to play due to wireless header.
Have worked with TAC but they do not find any thing conclusive. Can anyone pls tell me what else can be done to analyse and fix the issue

Is the issue with unicast RTP or with multicast (i.e. paging)?

  • Tell me, is the 3GS a better phone than the 3G (how's the voice quality)?

I'm likely to go with the 3GS when my current Verizon plan expires in a few months. As great as the iPhones are, I have some concern regarding phone voice quality. I have seen numerous online comments regarding the iPhone 3G having only mediocre voice quality.
I would love to hear from new 3GS owners regarding their impressions of voice quality on their new phones. Also, if 3G owners would like to post comments on this issue I would be interested in this as well.
I love the look, apps, etc etc. and am excited about moving up to an iPhone soon.

I posted too early today before many had gotten their phones; now that it's evening and you have all had time to check it out, perhaps we can get some comments.

  • IPhone 5 bad call voice quality

Got the new iPhone 5 and have bad phone call quality. The recipient of the call seems to be able to hear me ok, but their voice either isn't there or drops out or sounds grainy like when you have bad cell reception. Many times, the calls have just not connected. I know that that my cell reception and the recipients cell reception were excellent. This has occured when calling other cell phones, land lines, and toll free numbers. Anyone else having this issue? Have an appointment at Apple tomorrow morning to see what they think.

    PROBLEM IDENTIFIED (..maybe)
Update: Have not gone to the AT&T store yet, but was trying out some tests and think LTE is causing the problem. I am in an LTE capable area (Outside Washington DC). When I disabled LTE in the cellular settings, the phone calls sound clear. When I enabled the LTE in the settings, the majority of the time, I was having the bad voice call quality. Not sure if this would happen on Verizon network too, but could you try it out and see if you have the same results? If anyone else trys this test out, let me know your results.
As an aside, My brother who lives in a non-LTE capable area has had no issues with call quality. Could be coincidence, but hope I have pinpointed the problem.

  • IPhone 6 verizon voice quality

Has anyone noticed a hissing and cracking sound while speaking on a verizon iPhone 6? I am experiencing poor cell performance.  Also, I have had my device crash twice while on a call. Both times when I was just put on hold.  I had to hold the home and power button to turn it on (reboot).  It would not respond with the power button only. My boss was on the same conference call and his iPhone 4s was crystal clear.  My iPhone 6 was crackling and hissing.  Called back and had the same result.
VoLTE is not impressive. I enjoy data and voice simultaneously but the sound quality is worse than CDMA.

VoLTE is still in testing stages with Verizon. Call quality may not be what you're used to. Turn it off if you're having problems with it.

  • Crap BT handsfree voice quality using MEGA PLAYER 522BT

It has been more than 2 months since I bought my MEGA PLAYER 522BT. Initially, I was thinking of using this as my handsfree, but th evoice quality is really some crap! Eversince then, I have been checking the MSI download page in hope for new FW to improve this. So far, only 1 FW was released, and it deals only the bugs in the audio player, not the Bluetooth module.
That leads me to think that since mp3 players with 512MB onboard + ordinary BT handsfree costs more than this device, and the integration of both with the addition of SD/MMC card slot for this device will rack up the price quite a bit. But the price is very attractive when I bought it (consider it was an early launch at my place). So, the only logical thing I deduced from all this is: the BT module used in the device is CRAP!!!
I do hope I can find ways to improve it, but since it looks like it's a hardware issue, so not much hope there... Make no mistake. Using it as a pure basic music player is great, though.
If anyone could shed some light into this matter, any efforts are much appreciated.

I am annoyed with my 522.
At least 1 real 3.5mm head phone connector would have been nice.
What I would like to see is MSI backing this unit up with a range of better earphones or headphones.
It is impossible to buy any 2.5mm with a mic that work in the shops. Tiried my mda compact supplied phones. no joy.
The unit works well, my complaints are
    1) An audio beep when incoming bluetooth would be nice, not just a fade.
    2) Bluetooth volume passed to the headset is low, I can hardly hear calls when in noisey stations , streets.
    Please MSI fix number 2.
I have not had the echo problem.
    3) A better cover and belt clip/.arm clip. The one supplied is crap and is so tight the bluetooth button keeps engaging muting the sound.
Intermitant crashes , but sound is not bad.
Please MSI give me the chance to buy better phones. Ideally a 2.5mm fly lead , with a mic on for voice calls and a real 3.5mm headphone socket for my choice of phones.

  • Voice Quality Issues on UC520

We have UC520 connected via SIP trunk to a provider. We have been experiencing bad quality when more than one line is connected to a conferencing system outside. So lets say more than one person call this conferencing system through the SIP trunk from multiple extensions. The audio when people are speaking is very choppy and robotic. As soon as all except one drop out, it becomes normal.
We have over 30 mbits/sec of bandwidth available at all time so I am not sure what could be causing this.
Have disabled VAD and looked at this article http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk698/technologies_tech_note09186a008019ab88.shtml
but cannot figure it out.  ANy help would be appreciated.

You have poste in the wrong forum, anyay:
That indicates packed loss, even if you believe that you have the bandwidth, it can still happen. That is the naturn of the Internet, for which people still prefer POTS circuits for rock-solid service, or in some cases thye get dedicated data circuits for voice.
You can confirm if that is the case having multiple extensions. calling multiple external numbers and testing quality.
You can review UC500 configuration to optimize it, but it's unlikely that would solve the problem.
As a workaround for the conference problem, you can have a single extension call the conference service, and then have other phones conference to that call, not the external number directly.

  • Please help me with this indicator on my screen...it has reduced voice quality

Please help me with the rectangular symbol on the top next to the speaker symbol. It seems that I have turned on some option by mistake and everytime I make or receive a call, this symbol comes up. It wasn't the case earlier.
Because of this my voice call quality has dropped significantly. Please help soon.

  • Plantronics 925 voice quality

Has anyone tried the Plantronics 925 BT headset with their 3G phone? This set is sold in the Apple stores. I just got one and when on calls get told my voice has a very harsh, digital quality to it. Let myself a voicemail on my work phone and it does sound pretty bad.
Bad headset, bad phone? Firmware 2.0.2
    Thanks

    CWulf
Appreciate the feedback. When you say clear transmission, do you mean the person at the other end hears your call as normal? No hard edges, digital sounding? That sort of thing? My wife was the first one to say anything which prompted me to try calling and leaving a message on voicemail. The call was clear but the tone was very harsh.
