H520 with ATI Radeon Graphics card

I have an H520 (with a 700W replacement supply) with i7-3770 CPU running Windows 8 that does not recognize the ATI Radeon HD 7790 card that I've installed.  If I set the BIOS to IGP as the default display device  I can view Device Manager using the onboard graphics port, which only shows the Intel onboard graphics.  Running the ATI Catalyst driver manager fails since it does not see the 7790.
If I set the BIOS to AUTO or PCIe  I do not get any display on either the onboard or the 7790 graphics ports, so I have to physically remove the card to allow the machine to boot up again to use the onboard graphics by default to see the display again.  The sequence for AUTO prioritizes the PCIe display first according to the BIOS description, so apparently the onboard display does not get activated for this BIOS setting when the 7790 is installed.
As described in some other graphics card posts, I tried setting OS Optimized Defaults to disable but this had no apparent effect.
BIOS is Rev ESAKT23A.
I've tested the 7790 on an old computer and verified that it is working.
How can I get the 7790 to be recognized on the H520?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

After making your proposed changes I had a failure to boot with an error 1962, which I believe was due to Boot Mode = Legacy, but the good news is that there is now an output from the Radeon HD7790 with the following BIOS settings:
Display=AUTO
Secure Boot=Disabled
CSM=Enabled
Boot Mode=Auto
Boot Priority=Legacy First
OS Optimized Defaults=Enabled
Thank you so much neokenchi, this problem has been haunting me for a couple of days!

  • Monitor goes dark on 2008 Mac Pro Tower with ATI Radeon 5870 Card

I have a 2008 Quad Core Intel Mac Pro Tower running 10.6.8.
The original graphics card had trouble with HD movies of any kind and eventually my screen would sometimes not turn on (stayed black) when the computer was turned on.
So I replaced the graphics card for both reasons to a ATI Radeon 5870 PCIe with a GB rather than the 256 that came with the machine.
The problem was solved. I got a new monitor, one that is like the latest ones and all has been working great for a few years.
Then recently the monitor started going dark while the computer was on. (no screen saver or anything like that, I can be in the middle of work on a photo or video).
    Trouble shooting I have tried.
A forum said drag the mouse to the hot corner for a while and then back. Well, I tried, assuming I was dragging the mouse to the corner. Didn't work.
I tried using the keyboard commands to shut down the computer. It didn't work.
I tried plugging the keyboard into other USB ports and tried to shut down the computer. No luck.
The only thing that works is shutting down the computer with the power button.
on start up the monitor is back on.
Sometimes it works for days like this, other times the monitor stays on only minutes.
The monitor is fine. Tested my old monitor on the computer to make sure it wasn't my new monitor.
    So the questions are:
    Can it be over heating?
is it worn out, toast, done and or dead and dieing?
Should I buy a replacement graphics card VS finally upgrading and getting a new computer (lots of $$$$ but then I do work in HD Video so....)
    any help is appreciated
    thanks

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

  • Realtek HD Audio driver disappears after installing an ATI Radeon graphics card

My Realtek HD Audio driver disappears (from both the Vista "Sound Manager" and the "Device Manager") and is replaced by an ATI HD Audio driver after installing an ATI  Radeon 5450 graphics card.  I've tried un-installing the ATI Audio driver and re-installing the Realtek Audio driver.  But, upon rebooting, Vista automatically re-installs the ATI Audio driver (and the Realtek Audio driver, which I just re-installed, is no where to be found after rebooting).  I'm using an HP a6110n desktop running Windows Vista.

    Hi:
I bet you were unpleasantly surprised by that!
    The fix is simple:
Go into your system setup (BIOS) using the F10 key.
Find your device configuration menu. In that menu there should be a setting for your onboard audio. It is probably set to Auto.
Change the setting to Enabled. Hit the F10, key there and again when you save your settings and exit.
Now your onboard audio will be back and your HDMI out audio on your graphics card should work too when you need it.
What happened was when you installed the Video card with HDMI out, there is an audio chip on the video card for HDMI. The PC sensing a new sound card, just disabled the onboard sound card because it thought you didn't want to use the onboard card anymore.
Changing the BIOS setting to enabled tells the PC to use the onboard audio card as well as any others you may have installed.

  • Trouble with my new ATI Radeon graphics card

    Hello.
Today I installed Arch Linux on my PC. I wanted to run Xorg and needed the ATI graphics drivers. I read that the open source drivers aren't fast as the properietaries are. So I decided to choose the properietary one.
First I tried to install from the Arch Repositories (pacman -Sy catalyst catalyst-utils) but I got an error:
fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1)
After this I downloaded the .run-Script from ati.com. Whil starting X I got the same error as before:
fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1)
I checked my xorg.conf twice and it seems that there's everything is okay. But there's something I don't understand: In the config, the BusID is set to 1:0:0 and in the error message it uses 1:0:1.
lspci|grep VGA showed me the following information:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)]
It says that I have a PCIExpress card? But I don't have! It is a AGP card!
What can I do now? I waste hours of hours without getting an answer. Now I'm really depressed.
On a forum I read, I should buy a NVIDIA card. If no one can give me an answer, perhaps I will.
    Thank you very much.
    -Squall

I am new to Linux but I used to have an X800 agp card when I used Ubuntu gutsy so I kind of know what you are going through.
I did a quick search here http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI and spotted this ( I am hoping that this may help)
    System Freezes/Hard locks
        * To prevent system lockups, try adding the following lines to your fglrx "Device" section in xorg.conf
       Option "UseInternalAGPGART"         "no"
Option "KernelModuleParm"           "agplock=0" # AGP locked user pages: disabled
Note: Neither option is necessary anymore since 8.24.18 because ATI has removed the internal AGP GART support from the driver.
        * As well, the radeonfb framebuffer drivers have been known in the past to cause problems of this nature. If your kernel has radeonfb support compiled in, you may want to try a different kernel and see if this helps.
    [edit] Hardware Conflicts
Radeon cards used in conjunction with some versions of the nForce3 chipset (e.g. nForce 3 250Gb) won't have 3D acceleration. Currently the cause of this issue is unknown, but some sources indicate that it may be possible to get acceleration with this combination of hardware by booting Windows with the drivers from nVIDIA and then rebooting the system. This can be verified by issuing in a root console the following command:
        dmesg | grep agp
If you get something similar to this (using an nForce3-based system)
        agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0
        agpgart: Setting up Nforce3 AGP.
        agpgart: aperture base > 4G
and also if issuing this command...
         tail -n 100 /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep agp
    ...gets something similar to:
(EE) fglrx(0): [agp] unable to acquire AGP, error "xf86_ENODEV"
    Then you have this bug.
Some sources indicate that in some situations, downgrading the motherboard BIOS may help, but this cannot be verified in all cases. Also, a bad BIOS downgrade can render your hardware useless, so beware.
See bug http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6350 for more information and a potential fix.

  • PC with ATI X1900 Graphics card - Can't drive my 23" Apple display

I recently assembled new PC with A8N-SLI mobo and ATI X1900 All-in-Wonder card (with DVI-I out) driving a new Apple Cinema 23" display. I've not been able to get the display to come up on boot except for a few occasions when I disconnect and reconnect the ADC cable to the power supply after boot. I'm guessing this problem has to do with mixing Apple and PC (OK, it was a gamble).

  • Crash with ATI Radeon X1900 XT and second HD display (DVI) ?

hi ! i have a realy tough one for you guys : since 3-4 days i've been getting this realy strange (and scary!) kernal panic screen / crashes / freeze with my macpro dual 2.66 with ati radeon X1900 xt.
the crashes keep coming while doing extensive work (video converting, renders) or just letting the macpro running doing nothing much all night long...
now this is what i found for now : if i disconect my 2nd display (samsung syncmaster 2493hm HD in DVI 1080p) it seem to be stable. when i reconnect it sometime it can run again with this 2nd display for a while but when i leave a render all night long the next morning it will be frozen, nothing on screen (all black).
after rebooting it get this crash report from the system :

The Radeon 9000 driver works for the Radeon 7500 card.  I have successfully used it on a T43 with Vista Ultimate x86

Unfortunately no.  The Radeon 9000 driver should bring your graphics score up to close to 2, but it will not get it high enough to enable Aero support.

  • After Effects 7 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT

    Hi everyone,
I use Adobe After Effects 7 a lot and I'm not happy with my current machine (PowerPC G5 2x1.8GHZ, 2GB DDR SDRAM, ATI Radeon X800 XT), it is too slow to work smoothly when I have several layers and effects going on. Previewing the work on the timeline (OpenGL or Adaptative resolution) is painfully slow and takes on my nerves. I believe this is mainly due to my graphics card, and the fact is not 100% compatible with OpenGL on After effects.
I'm ready to upgrade with a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad Xeon with ATI Radeon X1900 XT, but only if I'm going to enjoy a real improve with After Effects 7, as this is my main editing application right now.
Does anybody have experience with this configuration?
Thanks in advance for reading and replies!
    PowerPC G5 2x1.8GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB DDR SDRAM, ATI Radeon X800 XT

I have this configuration, but sadly have had no time to play around with After Effects. AE's realtime playback capabilities are limited (especially when compared with something like Motion), so you're probably still going to be rendering to RAM a lot. I believe the OpenGL support is for things like anti-aliasing, blur, and blending modes -- so a faster video card may not automatically equal huge performance boost across the board. Four Xeon cores and a lot of RAM will help it a lot more (see exception below).
Also, AE 7 still has to run under Rosetta which results in a slower performance than if it was native. Also, be aware that there is a limit placed on all Rosetta processes that do not allow them to address more than 1.5GB of RAM combined. This will most likely limit your render speed and preview lengths. See this thread on Adobe's forums for more info:

EDIT: The above link was to the performance comparisons, but not the original Adobe forum thread. Here it is:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc2401b
However, if you read the thread, and follow the link in it, the author is seeing huge performance gains with AE7 on his MacPro 3GBs over his old dual G5 4.5GBs.
So most likely, you'll see a performance benefit from upgrading. And when an Intel native version of AE ships, things will really fly.
