H61M-P23 and AHCI

I have purchase H61M-P23 from Microcenter. According to the documentation, this board should have AHCI support. However, in BIOS (version 17), I don't see that option. All I see is IDE and DISABLE. I know other boards like H61M-E33 had same problem and MSI released a beta BIOS. Not sure if there is a beta BIOS for H61M-P23 also. Please help. Thanks.

Your welcome. Did you get it installed & AHCI is showing up ok now?
No, it totally screwed up. I used the same Beta to update H61M-E33 which worked fine. I did not read the thread completely. The beta BIOS is NOT for H61M-P23. I did not read the thread and updated the BIOS!!!! Now after the BIOS upgrade, I don't get video. Looks like the motherboard is trying to use the integrated video, but H61M-P23 does not have a integrated video!!
Any advice please?

  • H61M-E33 and AHCI

    Hello,
I recently grabbed one of the MSi H61M-E33 mainboards from the Microcenter deal a few days back.  Despite the information I see online, and in the board's user manual, it doesn't appear to have AHCI support.  Does anyone know if MSi is looking into this?  I gave them a call, but they just had me update the BIOS, which did nothing.
In UEFI, it even describes each of the settings like AHCI was supposed to be an option, but it's just not there.  It doesn't look like I'm alone, either.  I see a couple mentions of this around the internet, but I didn't see anything here so I thought I'd ask.
    Thanks!

Might be some information concerning that in this thread; https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=146755.0
Interesting.  I didn't see that thread because it's on a different board.  So two of MSi's H61 boards are exhibiting this problem.  I do see they share the same firmware, and looking around online there are rumors that H61MU-E35 has a UEFI update on the way to fix the issue.
    Hopefully this gets corrected soon.

I bought a new Mobo of the same model, yet it still happens. I'm wondering if its a PSU problem or CPU died from spark.

So true; some of us learn from our expensive mistakes and but the forum is full of users who unfortunately mostly argue that their PSUs are OK, probably thinking it won't happen to them.

  • Low Audio on H61M-P23

I think this may be the last question on my install of the on H61M-P23. Everything else seems to be working, The port on the back of the motherboard is "line-out". Connecting the un-powered speakers I have to it produces some sound but is difficult, at best, to hear, even with the sound turned all the way up in the Windows 7 Audio control. The audio connector from the front panel on the case has a connector for AC97 and one for HD Audio. (Azalia) and that manual includes a warning that connecting improperly can result in damage, so I'd like to get it right. If I plug one of those to JAUD1, can I plug my speakers into the jack at the front, and which should I use?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    >>Posting Guide<<
    Use the HD Audio connector.
You need powered (amplified) speakers to get better sound amplification. Using the front output will produce pretty much the same level of sound output. At best these outputs will produce acceptable sound levels for a headset.

As soon as I add the memory stick the power supply dies. Even if its just the cpu and memory. Tried both slots. I can run cpu, disk and dvd but not memory.

JFP2, should show in the manual. Try with a more powerfull single rail +12V PSU.

  • MSI H61M-P23 dies when SSD is connected

I purchased a Kingston 64GB SSD to use with my H61M-P23. The system had previously been running successfully for days with a standard WD hard drive.
After replacing the hard drive with the SSD the system will not power on - no lights, no beeps, no fans - nothing. Assuming that the system board was defective, I exchanged it for another.
I connected the new system board to the original hard drive to make sure it worked and it did. But again, after connecting the SSD, no lights, no beeps, no fans - dead, again.
Now suspecting a defective SSD, I decide to try one more time using an old system board. It works! The system POSTs and the SSD is listed in the BIOS.
Is there a specific SATA port that the SSD needs to be using on this board?
Is there some BIOS setting that I am missing?

    Quote
Plugged in the SSD, pressed the power switch and got nothing (no lights, no fans, no beeps) on the first attempt, both times. Removed SSD, cleared CMOS, plugged in SATA hard drive, pressed power switch, again nothing.
That is very strange, because the only connection there is between board and SSD is the SATA connection, which does not include a dedicated power line but only data and ground lines.  When the PSU is simply switched on (and not running, when it is in standby mode), all the power it supplies is +5V-Standby voltage over the 24-Pin ATX connector that acts as the source for the power-on signal when the power-on button is pressed.
In that state there is not supposed to be any voltage supply to peripheral devices and therefore not to the SSD either.  You cannot really knock-out a mainboard by simply plugging in an S-ATA connector and even with an SSD attached to it, there is not supposed to be any voltages or currents involved.
So the question is, what could have knocked out the board when the system wasn't actually turned on? Electro-static discharge is one explanation, but the chances of that happening the same way twice, are close to zero.  If some sort of over-current was responsible, or a short circuit, then your board would have at least done something when first turned on after you attached the SSD.  You said, there was absolutely no response from the system when you turned it on the first time.
Now, this is somewhat of a riddle.  Chances are that there is some sort of short-circuit involved here and/or a flaky power supply creating a voltage differential when it is not supposed to (in standby mode) that was somehow re-directed "through" the SSD into the board's circuits.  A defective or a wrongly connected cable could be able to cause similar damage, but there would usually be clear symptoms (system turns on for a quarter of a second and then crashes etc.).

  • H61m-p23 (B3) doesn't boot, 4 beeps

    Hey all:
I'm having trouble booting my H61m-p23 board. It's been used before with a sandy bridge processor (i5-3500k), but I'm not sure what BIOS is on it.
It sat in an anti-static bag for 4 months in a box, now i'm trying to use it with:
    Intel Celeron G1610 Ivy Bridge 2.6GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80637G1610
I have one stick of RAM (2GB) in the slot closest to processor, no graphics card, only keyboard/VGA hooked up, and I cleared CMOS several times.
When I try to boot, I get both PSU and CPU fan running, 4 short beeps, and then shuts off before anything comes up on the VGA
I'm guessing this is because the board BIOS is not compatible with ivy bridge timing.  How do I update the BIOS without access to the old BIOS in the first place?  I do NOT have access to sandy bridge processors anymore.
    Help greatly appreciated!

no you cannot boot into BIOS or Flash it without a supported CPU as to get that far you need a processor that is even 50% functional and is at least recognized as being there (So also the NO CPU is not possible either)!
    your options:
1: Get a hold of a supported CPU to Flash the BIOS
2: send it to MSi to have the BIOS chip Flashed
3: Find a shop near you that has a SPI Flash Programming Device service or a shop that is willing to flash it for you by putting in a supported CPU to flash the BIOS chip
    Take your pick!

  • H61M-P23 B3 MB Displaying A2 Error

I've had a H61M-P23 B3 MB for about a year with no problems.  Yesterday it started crashing and would boot to a blank screen with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner and the code "A2" in the lower right hand corner.  I was able to get it to re-boot successfully by turning off the  power supply by the rear mounted rocker switch and unplugging the power cord for a few minutes.  It would then boot normally.
I can't be 100% sure, but I believe that when the computer would not boot correctly, the HD activity light was on all of the time.
    HD or PSU problem?
    Thanks.

I attempted to update the BIOS on my MSI H61M-P23 motherboard and the update failed.  Attempted to reboot the PC and no longer have access to the BIOS and the PC does not boot.  Additionally, there are two short beeps in POST.  Any suggestions on resolving this issue?

I don't recall what the old BIOS version was, but whatever the newest version that's available for download from MSI is what I attempted to flash.  I ran the BIOS update in Windows and my PC froze for over an hour and wouldn't respond, so I powered it down and went to power it back up and now I get a blank screen and two beeps in POST.
which version exactly you tried to update?

-MB H61M-P23 B3 (Latest BIOS Update)

The PC worked fine for 2-3 moths. When the PC usualy started there where 2 beeps followed by another one. Now the pc starts the same but after thoes beeps has another 5 beeps and the computer doesent boot at all. When I remove the GTX460 and go with a 8400GS or onboard video it works. Memtest OK, PSU changed with a 800W Chieftec .
The thing is that sometimes boots with gtx460 but when I restart the PC doesen`t work.
I tested all the components with another MB(MSI G41M-P26) and another CPU (C2D E7200) and all works fine.
I tried setting the RAM to 1066 but its the same thing.

My bad, I thout I updated BIOS but not. After Updateing BIOS to latest version the computer booted fine and entered BIOS, I restarted and I got the same black screen.
Also the beeps changed. 1 short beep, 1 long and 2 short.
Also when it boots and I enter BIOS and when I select Discard Changes and Exit and press yes/ok it doesen`t do nothing only save changes and exit works and the computer restarts.

  • Connector Question on H61M-P23 B3

I'm installing the H61M-P23 B3 in a Thermaltake VL8000 case. The Power LED cable coming from the front panel has a connector with 3 pin sockets (blue wire on one end, nothing in the middle, and white at the other end), but the manual for H61M-P23 B3 shows JFP1 using pins 2 and 4 for the Power LED, which are right next to each other. What am I missing? Should I leave one end hanging off the edge of the pins with the empty pin socket on pin 2?

Thank for responding. A quick followup: on JFP2, it appears that would be across pins 1-3-5 making the pin labeled Suspend LED go to the unused pin socket? Is that correct?

  • MX200 and AHCI/IDE

I've read a lot of messages about AHCI or EDI and I'm really none the wiser, basically because whenever I activate AHCI in BIOS my PC boots OK and then slowly "everything" starts to freeze and stop working properly. If I wait too long, I can spend upto 20 minutes waiting for Windows to "log off". I'm running Windows 7 X64 Home Premium, booting off 250Gb MX200 (with the latest firmware) plus three other IDE SATA drives. The MX200 was cloned from an IDE SATA drive (now disconnected and waiting emergency recall!). I changed the "msahci" flag in Registry, then rebooted, set AHCI in the BIOS, and booted to get the AHCI drivers installed, all before installing the SSD. Installing and cloning went well and I was really please, but then the freezing started! Eventually, I had to physically power the PC down, went into BIOS and reset to IDE mode. There were then a few minutes of panic whilst I tried to get Windows to boot, eventually OK. SO, I'm now running in IDE mode and everything is fine. But every thing says I should be using AHCI mode. To try and discover which mode is best, I've run AS SSD tests under IDE and AHCI (rebooting hurriedly before the freeze set in). Does anybody understand what the figures mean? (Their web site is in German and even translated means little to me) My instinct is that IDE figures look better, apart from the "Score" where AHCI is very much higher; after that all IDE figures are better except for Access/Write. Any suggestions. Baffled.

Sorry. Definitely meant IDE HDDs! All drives are plugged into SATA ports (block of six) on the motherboard. The MX200 is on Port 1 (first), followed by the other three IDE HDDs on Ports 2 to 4, plus the CD-R/W on Port 6. This is the results obtained by AS SSD and I've typed alongside them the figures I got for "pure" IDE. I took screen snapshots but I can't paste the images in.  AS SSD Benchmark 1.8.5636.37293

  • Satellite U400-183 - Need Recovery DVD and AHCI drivers

    Hi there,
I tried to reinstall Win Vista Home Premium to my Satellite U400-183. I used a Win OS DVD that came with my other Notebook from an other manufacture and the Key which came with my Toshiba notebook. Everything worked just fine but in certain areas of Windows still are some specific settings from the other manufacture. Now is there a possibility to get a Windows Vista DVD from Toshiba?
Another question is where I can get the AHCI drivers. There is only a exe file on the support site which i can't use while installing Windows. There have to be these .sys files but I can't find them on the Toshiba site, so I had to install Windows in compatibility mode.
    THX in advance!
PS: Sorry for my bad english, I'm from Germany...

    Hi!
A new recovery DVD you can get from your local ASP (authorized service provider).
Or you order a DVD from Toshiba directly:
    https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
The AHCI drivers or lets say Intel Storage Manager you can download from the Toshiba website as you already said.
The .exe file you must extract to use it during the installation but with the recovery disk you dont need them.
Please read the readme file in from the Storage Manager, there is an example how to extract it. Use he command line
    For example: -A -A -PC:\<path>
