HA betewwn two wlc

Hi .
I hace 24 wlc 5508 with 250 license for each. I m planning to get 3new 8500 wlc as back up. Can I mix between two siffetent model. And what is the license coubt for the 8500 wlcs. Cab I order HA 8500 .

Please refer to the below points esp. highlighted sections ( taken from link posted by Leo ) , it completely answers your query:
Configure one WLC as Primary (by default, the WLC HA Unit ID is Primary and should have a valid AP-BASE count license installed) and another WLC as Secondary (AP base count from the Primary WLC will be inherited by this unit) using the CLI in this step. In this example, WLC 1 is configured as Primary, and WLC 2 is configured as Secondary:
You do not need to configure the unit as Secondary if it is a factory ordered HA SKU that can be ordered from release 7.3 onwards. A factory ordered HA SKU is a default Secondary unit, and will take the role of the Standby WLC the first time it is paired with an Active WLC that has a valid AP Count License.
If you want to convert any existing WLC as a Standby WLC, do so using the config redundancy unit secondary command in the CLI. This CLI command will only work if the WLC which is intended to work as Standby has some number of permanent license count. This condition is only valid for the 5500 WLC, where a minimum of 50 AP Permanent licenses are needed to be converted to Standby. There is no restriction for other WLCs such as the WiSM2, 7500, and 8500.

  • Two WLC over the same SUBNET - selection from AP for determinate WLC

    Hi
I have the next problem, my company have two WLC (WISM1 - IOS 7.0 and WLC2504 - IOS 7.4), and we have 4 types of APs (1131, 1242, 1040 and 1600), well the WISM 1 manages the old APs 1131, 1040 and 1242, the 2504 manages the 1600, this because the WISM 1 don't support the 1600
Well my question its how i can assigned to APs 1131, 1242 and 1040 to connect to WISM1 and not to 2504 , both are on the same subnet and the Ip its send for DHCP with option 43, others for DNS and apparently some of my APs connected to the 2504, I wish only connect to WISM 1
How i can set priority in the AP for conect to WISM1?, i read the High Availability on the AP, this is enough or should we make any extra settings the WLC
    Thanks for the response

  • Snmp error for guest access ticket on two WLC

    Hi,
I have one wcs (5.0.56.2) and two wlc 4400 ( 5.0.148.2). When i try to create a ticket for guest access on the two wlc without time restriction, it works well. But when I defined time restriction for the ticket, i have a snmp error on the passive wlc (snmp operation to device failed, attempt to set conflicting attribute value) and not on the active xlc.
    Thks.

The lobby ambassador can specify the amount of time that the guest user accounts remain active. After the specified time elapses, the guest user accounts expire automatically.
The local user database is limited to a maximum of 2048 entries and is set to a default value of 512 entries (on the Security > General page). This database is shared by local management users (including lobby ambassadors), net users (including guest users), MAC filter entries, and disabled clients. Together these cannot exceed the configured database size.

    Hi folks,
We have two WLC-4404 in same subnet & both connected to a switch, same wlan ssid are configured & same interfaces with same vlans on both.

  • Two WLC 2504 in same Network

I have two WLC 2504 controllers. These controllers are for two different buildings. But they share a VLAN, and network address range.
How can I control the access points to the register selected only at a specific controller.
    Example:
    AP 1 -> WLC 1
    AP 2 -> WLC 2
    AP 3 -> WLC 1
Since the buildings also broadcast in different SSID.
The two controllers are in a mobility group.

I also ran into an install similar to yours. My client had a flat network and each wlc had licenses for the amount of APs in a particular building. What I did to make sure the APs never join the other wlc, is to use a Mac list. This allowed me to enter the APs base Mac address on the wlc and I enabled under the ap policy to verify authorization using Mac list. You can also do what AA mentioned which is good practice, but you have a chance that APs might join the other wlc. If the other wlc has different configurations, it might cause issues until the ap falls back to its primary.

  • 7920 roaming between two WLCs

    hi,
    - i have two WLCs 4404 and 4402 in the same mobility group and all connections seem to be ok.
    - one ssid for voip.
    - two 7920 phones
when i roam between the WLCs i will lose the connection.
What should i configure on the WLC??
    thx

    Are you doing L3 mobility?
If so, would configure the voice ssid for the same VLAN on both controllers to see if that works or not.
Of course for mobility group setup, need the mac and IP configured on each contoller in that mobility group.
Ensure that 3.02 is loaded on the 7920 phones.
Would recommend 4.0.217.0 or later for the controller version.

  • Upgrade two WLC 5508 with HA SSO from 7.5.102.0 to 7.6.130.0 combined with FUS 1.9

    The running config is:
    - Two WLC5508's in HA SSO setup running version 7.5.102.0
    - about 130 x 2602i APs
I need to upgrade to 7.6.130.0 using the pre-download feature to minimize the network downtime.
Is it possible to transfer the 7.6 to the controllers and pre-download 7.6 to all APs, then do the FUS 1.9 upgrade and finally start the actual controller upgrade to 7.6.
    So the steps would be:
    1. Transfer 7.6 image to primary controller (do not reboot!), so still running 7.4 as active image.
    2. Start pre-download of 7.6 image to all APs and wait till all APs have the new image (do not know how long it takes for 130 APs).
    3. Upgrade both controllers with FUS 1.9 (HA should upgrade both controllers automatically) (takes about 45 minutes?)
    4. Make 7.6 image the active/primary image on controllers and APs and reset controllers.
If the steps above will not work, I would need to upgrade FUS 1.9 which means 1 hour downtime and then start the pre-download to all APs. The pre-download can take a long time I heard, so I need to wait and wait before I can start the 7.6 upgrade, which means another 1 hour downtime.
This way I need two maintenance windows instead of one. So would it be possible to combine the pre-download and FUS?
    Regards,
    Bjorn

    >Do I need to upgrade the FUS 1.9 before the 7.6 image or can I do the FUS afterwards? If I can do it afterwards, I can do the upgrades in the same maintenance window. This way I can start the pre-download the day before, so I am pretty sure the APs have the image at the time of the maintenance window.
    >I cannot find any remarks about the required order of installation (FUS -> image or image -> FUS).

  • Two WLC 5508 Anchor High Availability

    Hello.
It's possible use 2 WLC 5508 en ANCHOR MODE in a Active-Active scenario?.
For example, if one WLC get down of service, the other one keep provide service to the anchor clients?.
In this moment we have just one WLC 5508 in Anchor Mode. What i need to configure a ANCHOR high Availability.
    Thanks A lot!!!

    This is confusing to me:
If we install a second Anchor WLC, what you recommend about the DHCP server in a failover event, because this second ANCHOR WLC will have the same configuration of the firts anchor wlc.
What do you mean the two will have the same configuration?  The hostname and ip should be different.... or are you just stating that the WLAN and DHCP will be the same?  I don't want to tell you something and break your environment, so just trying to clear things up.
    Thanks,

  • LAG for two WLC 4400

    Hello  everyone,
I installed for a client two  WLC4400 (one is used for redundancy).
I wish I could make the aggregate links between these two  controllers to spread the load.
In this configuration, there won't be primary and secondary controllers,
APs  will be associated with one or the other WLC when they will be
discovered and by the number of AP on each controller.
    Is this configuration possible?
    And how to do that?
    Thank you in advance,
    Adeline

    Hi,
You don’t need aggregate links between the two controller to balance the load. Just let the access points discover both controllers and they will take care of the load balancing. The AP collects all information about the controllers they found during the discovery, and then choose the controller with the leased load. And, make sure that you don't configure primary and secundary controller on the APs, they will only load balance if they don't have this configured.

  • Implementing Two Guest Anchor WLCs

    Hello -
I am wondering if anyone has ever setup a guest network solution using two anchor controllers where the internal WLCs each have two anchors configured and use a primary Anchor and when unavailable can dynamically fail over to a secondary Anchor.
I am looking to bring my current guest service onto the DMZ.  Right now we are using separate ISPs where we tunnel the guest traffic to an anchor controller and out the separate ISP.   We do not use our corporate internet service for guest.   In any event.  The DMZ design I am working on would include two WLCS sitting on our DMZ.  I'd like to have each internal WLC configured to associate to the DMZ WLC that is connected to our active DMZ/Border.   Upon failure, I would then like to have the internal WLCs failover to the second DMZ WLC on our standby DMZ/Border.   So I would need to configure both anchors on the guest WLAN of each WLC.   I'm just wondering if this is possible and if the failover will actually work.
Any input is appreciated.   I'd like to implement a redundant guest solution where internal WLCS can dynamically failover to a backup Anchor....
    Thanks
    Chuck

Hi, I just got done moving our anchors to the DMZ so you are in luck as everything is fresh in my mind. I, like you, have dual anchors in the DMZ I also have over 30 inside (foreign controllers) connected to these anchors.
When you anchor a WLAN to (2) anchor controllers, the controllers automagically load balance guest associations. Example: 2 guest attached to SSID: GUEST. Guest#1 goes to anchor#1 and guest #2 goes to anchor#2. You dont configure anything, this happens automagically, like I mentioned.
As for failover. Yes, if you pull the plug to anchor#1. The EoIP tunnel breaks between the anchor and the foreign controller. Guest that were on anchor#1 will require reauthentication and then join to anchor#2.So if you had say a "accept page", these guest will get that same page again from anchor 2.
    Does that answer your question?

  • How can I apply existing WCS "WLAN Config" templates to a new WLC?

We've been running a pair of WLC 4402s managed by WCS, thus we are still on the older 7.0.235.0 (WCS) / 7.0.235.3 (WLC) release. I'm trying to add an additional WLC 4402-50 as a hot spare. I first ran the manual setup steps to give it an IP in our range, and used the WLCs web page to set our SNMP communities and such to the values used by our existing WLCs, then I added the new WLC in WCS.
At this point I could apply most of the "Controller Templates" from our existing configuration to the new unit. However, I can not get it to take our existing interfaces nor our WLAN Configurations. How do I avoid needing to recreate these from scratch on the new WLC?
We only have four dynamic interfaces, and each WLC needs its own IP address for each interface, so I did manually add these via the WLCs web page. However, now when I go to the WCS' "Configure > Contoller Templagte Launch Pad" page, then select "WLANs > WLAN Configuration", I see my usual list of WLANs, but can't figure how to push them to the new WLC.
For all of the other templates on the launch pad, I can select a template, click the "Apply to Controllers..." button, and I get a list that has my existing two and also the new controller. I can select the new controller, and apply the template, and it succeeds.
Yet if I select a specific WLAN config, and press "Apply to Controllers...", the list that appears has only my existing two WLCs, not the the new one.
In small green type at the top it says, "Controllers configured with Interface/Interface Group - 'w-restricted'  and selected RADIUS server(s), LDAP servers, ACL Name with rules and  Ingress interface are shown."
I have already manually added the interface "w-restricted" to the new controller, and have added the RADIUS servers via the template used by our other two WLCs. Not sure what to do about "LDAP servers, ACL Name with rules and  Ingress interface", as we don't have any ACL rules, nor use LDAP directly from the WLCs (as all user ID stuff is via RADIUS).
Any hints on what manual setup I should add to get the new WLC in the list for these WLAN Configs?
    Thanks,
    Steve

To be honest, if your only adding another WLC, your better off creating the interface and WLAN's manually. I don't like pushing out templates to create new WLAN's. I would use it to adjust an existing WLAN, but that would be it. To me it's safer. Also your new WLC is on the same code? If you really want to figure it out, I would manually add the interfaces first then refresh the co fog from the new WLC and then push out the WLAN SSID and see if it takes. If not, don't waste your time anymore and create it manually.

  • WLC, Bonjour, Airprint in diffrent SSID

    Hi,
I have two wlc 5508 version 7.5.102.0. one foreign and one anchor.
the APs are connectet to the foreign wlc.foreign wlc has a tunnel to anchor wlc. On Anchor, I creat the SSIDs and there are breakout to internet.
I use an apple iPad and HP MFP 276 AirPrint printers.
My SSIDs are "Branch 1" 192.168.1.0/24 and "Branch 2" 192.168.2.0/24
every branch has one AP 2602 one HP AirPrint printer and one iPad connectet.
so far, everything works fine, bonjour for airprint works.
But my problem is if I will print something from iPad "Branch 1" I can see both printer, from Branch 1 and 2.
How can I block that Bonjour Broadcast all available printers in both SSIDs ?
my goal is that iPad "Branch 1" should only see printer "Branch 1" and  iPad "Branch 2" should only see printer "Branch 2"
and not all Printers they are connectet to my wlc.
Have anyone an idea what I can configure on my wlcs to change this ?
    thank you guys

I'm not sure if an ACL is my solution.
    I think I have a layer 2 problem.
I create for every branch a seperate mDNS Profile and activate this profile on interface, interface gr. and  wlan ssid.
if I would print something from my iPad and I select the printer I have both printers to chose, branch 1 and branch 2,
but if I'm in branch 1 and I chose branch 2 printer, I receive the error "printer offline". for sure.
How can I prevent the visibility from printer branch 2 in branch 1 ??
I would only see printer 1 at branch 1 on my iPad printing selection.

  • Converged Access Design Help (Catalyst 3850 and WLC 5508...Mobility Oracle)

    Hello,
I am an engineer working with a Cisco Gold Partner in Saudi Arabia. We have a large university as our client where they are constructing a new
building and require our services to build the network infrastructure. Therefore, we are to implement the routing and switching infrastructure as
    well as the Wireless solution.
At present, I have no issues in implementing the R&S infrastructure as it is very straight forward but it has implications on the deployment of
the wireless solution which I explain further below. The R&S infrastructure comprises of the typical Core, Distribution, and Access layers and we
are focusing on the local distribution and access switches with regards to the new building. The client has a converged Layer 3 network spanning
from distribution layer to core layer and they are running EIGRP for this convergence. This is not a problem and has already been implemented.
Yet, the challenge arises in deploying the WLAN infrastructure. The client already has a Cisco WLAN infrastructure in place where they have a
large number of LAPs that are registered with their controllers in the Data Center. They have two WLC 5508 where one is the Primary and the other
the Secondary. The local distribution switch to which the WLC are connected also is the gateway for the SVIs for the SSIDs that are configured on
the controllers. This means that once the packets from the AP come in to the WLC, they are tagged with the correct VLAN and sent to the directly
connected distribution switch which then routes it into the rest of the Layer 3 network. Interestingly, the WLC 5508 are running AireOS 7.6 and
support the "New Mobility" feature. The two controllers have formed a Mobility Group (MG) between each other.
Now, the new building will have two Catalyst 3850 switches installed where each one has a total of 40 AP licenses pre-installed and activated
i.e. a total of 80 APs can be supported by the two switches. A total of 67 LAPs will be deployed in the new building which can be accommodated
between the two switches and their integrated controller.
Yet, based on my understanding and research about Converged Access is that, ideally, the Catalyst 3850 will only run the Mobility Agent (MA)
feature while a central controller would provide the Mobility Controller (MC) service. unfortunately, there are not enough licenses on the
existing WLC 5508 nor can we migrate the new licenses that will facilitate such a split deployment.
This means that I would need to configure the two Catalyst 3850 as independent MC and form a MG between them. I have done this and tested this
already and the mobility is working fine. But my concern is not about getting the Catalyst 3850 to work as this is simple but rather it is
focused on creating a common Mobility Domain (MD) so that clients can roam from this new building to the rest of the campus while maintaining the
state of their connections to the WLAN infrastructure.
To make things more complicated, since the new building will have its own Layer 3 distribution switch and the Catalyst 3850 switches will connect
to this distribution switch, it means that new VLANs and SVIs need to be created for the SSIDs broadcast in the new building. This means that new
subnets need to be assigned to the SSIDs.
As such, I have the following questions:
Q1) If we create new SVIs for the SSIDs (same SSIDs names will be used in the new building as in the rest of the university campus) this means
that new subnets will be assigned to these SSIDs. Now, I believe I have two options...one is to make the new Catalyst 3850s to be in the same MG
as the existing WLC 5508 which then cater for Layer 3 client roaming or I have to treat this as a totally seperate WLAN network and follow on to
the solution as per the next question. Please advise which is a better option?
Q2) I could create separate MG i.e. the new building Catalyst 3850s can be in one MG and the existing controllers can be in another MG. I can
then have one of the existing WLC 5508 (the primary one) to run the Mobility Oracle (MO) feature so as to create a single Mobility Domain (MD).
Would this facilitate in Layer 3 client roaming and RRM for all the controllers in the same MD?
Q3) If I do create a MD, how is this accomplished in such an environment since the documentation is severely limited in this regard?
Please advise at your earliest. To assist further, I have attached a topology diagram which may aid in explaining the situation with more
clarity. If these things are clarified, I will be better able to wrap my head around the technology and in turn service my clients better.
    Regards,
    Amir

    Hi Amir,
Q1) If we create new SVIs for the SSIDs (same SSIDs names will be used in the new building as in the rest of the university campus) this means that new subnets will be assigned to these SSIDs. Now, I believe I have two options...one is to make the new Catalyst 3850s to be in the same MG as the existing WLC 5508 which then cater for Layer 3 client roaming or I have to treat this as a totally seperate WLAN network and follow on to the solution as per the next question. Please advise which is a better option?
I would configure them in the same mobility group. Also configure same SPG for those two 3850 stacks if users are frequently roaming within these two buildings.
Q2) I could create separate MG i.e. the new building Catalyst 3850s can be in one MG and the existing controllers can be in another MG. I can then have one of the existing WLC 5508 (the primary one) to run the Mobility Oracle (MO) feature so as to create a single Mobility Domain (MD). Would this facilitate in Layer 3 client roaming and RRM for all the controllers in the same MD?
MO is not required (it is only for very large scale deployments)
Q3) If I do create a MD, how is this accomplished in such an environment since the documentation is severely limited in this regard?
Yes, documents are hard to find :(

  • WLC 5508 upgrade

    Hi All,
    We currently have 4 x WLC 5500 (AIR-CT5508-K9) V01 and V02
So two in  one datacenter and the other two in another datacenter. They are connected via Mobility group to and BOYD open wifi with an Anchor WLC the other 1.
All four of them are 7.4.110.0 and the APs we use are AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9  and AIR-CAP2602I-E-K9.
We are looking to get 2700 or 3700 AP so we can use 802.11ac, but we need to upgrade all WLC to  7.6.130.0.
    1. is it a direct upgrade from  7.4.110.0 to 7.6.130.0?
    2. If I upgrade one datacenter one weekend and the other next weekend, during that week two WLC would be 7.4 and other two 7.6 would it break or cause issue with Mobility group to and BOYD open wifi with an Anchor WLC?
    3. Can any please provide step to step guide for the upgrade from 7.4 to 7.6?
    Many Thanks
    appreciate it :)

    Hi Rasika,
Many Thanks for your reply and help!
    1. In regards to Upgrade the FUS, is it required to be upgraded once the WLC are upgraded to 7.6 or is just good practice?
    2. Or I can I upgrade the FUS another time?
