HA Cluster OVM 2.2

Hi,
I'm quite new to Oracle VM, so this is maybe a newbie question.
I'v tried to enable HA within a server pool. First I create a shared storage (repos.py -n xxxx:/ovm). Afterwords I assigned an new cluster root to the server (repos.pv -r UUID; repos.py -i). This all works quite well, as the shared storage was shown as new cluster root.
Then I went into Oracle VM Manager and enabled HA (enter the Server Poot Virtual IP, check High Availability Mode to enable). The test of the HA works also without a problem, but when I want to activate HA, I lost the connection to the server. Then I went in front of the server, and the the server is rebooting all the time????
In the short time the server is up I see a new interface lo:1 with the IP-Address of the Server Poot Virtual IP.
I've tried this with to different server, and I have the same behavior on both server. Does anyone have the same problem?
Reg.

I edit the /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp and changed the network-script stanza to network-bridge-ovs. Then I process like in the Meta-Link Doc: 738269.1 (just bind eth0 to xenbr0 and not bond0) and now it works. I receive the right device xenbr0:0 and the HA seems to be working too.Glad you found a solution.
So this new network-script (network-bridges, comes with 2.2) seems to have some problems.network-bridges ships with all versions of Oracle VM -- it's the default bridge creation script for Xen. Essentially, it creates a bridge for every network device it finds on the system. However, it is not recommended for complex network configuration, including bonding/trunking or VLAN assignments.

  • Cluster Not Available error when booting OVM server DOM0 from USB

    Hi all,
I have been wanting to run OVM 2.2 from a USB stick for a while now. I ran through the install CD today and saw there was a 'minimal USB install' option on the installation screen. So I plugged in a 4GB USB stick, rebooted, and ran the USB install.
After a while, the install completed, OVM booted up perfectly it seemed, and I was happy.
The server had no local storage apart from this USB stick as we are going to be hooking it up to an iSCSI target for guest VM storage.
This was a new lab setup, so I got the VM Manager running on another system, connected to the USB booted OVM server, and went to create a pool.
Running the 'test connection' that worked fine.
Trying to add the pool - failed. I got the error 'Cluster Not Available'
On the OVM server I did a repos.py -l and nothing gets listed.
I understand that for HA you need a repository with shared storage. However, before I have used these same install CDs with a singe local hard disk, to get OVM server running, and it did so fine.
So what's different with the USB disk install that means you don't get a repository?
Do I have to create a special repository LUN, manually connect the OVM server to this, and then use repos.py to create it?
    Cheers,
    Jeff

Ok I have read, re-read related parts of the underground manual and have hit a brick wall with the 'simple' task of setting up a NIC for dedicated iSCSI traffic. The manual does not cover this task in the iSCSI SAN section.
    So I'm in a catch 22.
My OVM server boots up, with it's single management NIC configured, but once booted - I don't want to connect to the iSCSI target via this network - I need it completely closed off.
I want to use another NIC (or bond of two) for dedicated iSCSI traffic to and from the OVM Server.
However, the underground manual strangely only seems to cover a single NIC configuration! It looks like he assumes you are going to be running iSCSI on your management NIC, which I can only think is incredibly bad practice.
I have installed OVM with the linux asknetwork - this did not give me the option to configure additional interfaces.
I then manually edited /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 on the OVMServer, restarted network, restarted the entire box - I can ping my new NIC / IP locally from within the OVM server, but I can not connect to the iSCSI target, nor can I ping the iSCSI NIC on the OVM server from the target.
This is such a simple thing to try to achieve - super frustrating...

  • OVM Manager cluster construct issue

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to build a demo insfrastructure for Oracle VM for SPARC with Oracle VM Manager for managment. Here is an overview of my infrastructure:
    - 2 T5220 with same configuration (2 x 32 core CPU, 32 Go RAM)
    - 1 ESX VM hosting Oracle VM Manager with Oracle Linux 5 as OS.

I try to built a HA environment using ovm manager. Every thing is good until I try to add server to server pool. Add the first server is OK, but it stays on error state because of a cluster construct error.
Job Internal Error (Operation)com.oracle.ovm.mgr.api.exception.FailedOperationException: OVMAPI_4010E Attempt to send command: create_cluster to server: ovmsrv01 failed. The second server can't be add to the pool until the first one issue is fixed! I'm confuse. Have I use good version for each package? I'm looking for a compatibility matrix between Manager, osv agent and ovm server for sparc, If any one can redirect me to a relevant web page ou doc!!!
Somebody can point me to a solution?
    Thank a lot!

  • Can I create and use more than one repository on OVM 2.1.5

The version of Oracle VM I am using is 2.1.5 .
I wonder can I create and use more than one repository on OVM 2.1.5. Because I want to install different GOS on different disks.
I know in Oracle VM 2.2 we can use following commands to realize that.
    a. #/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py –n /dev/mapper/mpathxp1
    b. #/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py –r UUID
    c. #/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py –i
And other repositories can also be mounted and found under /var/ovs/mount/UUID.
But in Oracle VM 2.1.5, seems just one repository can be created and mounted. For example:
At first, I create a repository using mpath1p1:
    a. # mkfs.ocfs2 /dev/mapper/mpath1p1
    b. #/usr/lib/ovs/ovs-makerepo /dev/mapper/mpath1p1 C "cluster root"
    c. I can find the repository has been mounted under /OVS.
But if I want to use "/usr/lib/ovs/ovs-makerepo /dev/mapper/mpath2p1 C "cluster root" to create another repository, and check the mount status using command "mount", these two disks are all have been mounted under /OVS.
"# cat /etc/ovs/repositories", only mpath1p1 with UUID was recorded there.
After reboot, only repository with mpath1p1 was mounted under OVS.
Can anyone tell me how to use more than one repositories on OVM 2.1.5. Do I have to install all the GOSs on the same disk and repository.
    Thank you very much.

Now I've known how to create different repository. They will be mounted under /OVS/UUID. Thanks.

  • Cluster in a box with Guest LDOMs : SCSI-3 reservations are not supported

    Hello,
I recently installed the Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 in  two simple Guest LDOMs (OVM for SPARC 3.1) with  one T5140 server and  SE 7110 as a shared storage. The some  SE 7110 whole LUNs mapped as VDS devices to both LDOMs. After initial installation of Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 I observed issues with quorum device -  both nodes cannot get SCSI3 (default) persistent reservation keys information at same time - only one node can be able to scrub. After switching cluster's global fencing option to "nofencing" (with "software" quorum implementation) both nodes can access quorum device successfully. So I can conclude that SCSI3 PGRs are not supported in this cases.
Unfortunately I didn't find any official and nonofficial documents info regarding this limitation. Could you please confirm or decline my suggestion.
    Thanks.

I am answering on my question by itself
Planning the Oracle Solaris OS - Oracle Solaris Cluster Software Installation Guide
Fencing – Do not export a storage LUN to more than one guest domain on the same physical machine unless you also disable fencing for that device. Otherwise, if two different guest domains on the same machine both are visible to a device, the device will be fenced whenever one of the guest domains halts. The fencing of the device will panic any other guest domain that subsequently tries to access the device.
    RTFM...

  • OVM and OCFS2 1.6

Ok this question may be a little complicated so I'll start by explaining what I'm trying to achive.
I have 3 OVM 2.2.1 servers in 1 Server pool running OCFS2 on an EMC SAN.
I also ave an Oracle Enterprise Linux server which connects to the same ocfs2 cluster for performing backups of the VMs.
Currently I have to pause all VMS and backup the shared storage in order to backup all of my VMs.
I would like to use reflink so I can do this without pausing them.
    Can I achieve this by
1 upgrading all OVM servers and my OEL Server to OCFS2 1.6 or is the Kernel upgrade not supported in OVM 2.2.1
    or
2 Upgrading my OEL server to OCFS2 1.6 and doing the reflinks there, but leave the OVM machines on 1.4 as the doco states the 1.4 and 1.6 are compatible with one another.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
unfortunately OCFS2 1.6 is not yet supported on OVM 2.2.1.
I am waiting all day that Oracle will finally release OVM 3.0, which will incorporate the new OCFS2 1.6 with all it functions.
This would also resolv your problem then...
Regarding your second option, I don't know if this will work. But it seems the only solution you have right now...

  • Oracle VM 3.0.3 is simply unusable after change of motherboard in OVMS

    Hi all,
so let's share some of my feelings about this crap. After so many issues during implementation this platform was finally set up. And was running for only one week with small number of errors. Then during friday motherboard in one of two Oracle VM servers in clustered pool failed and HP replaced it. Fine. Server runs, but Oracle VM manager is remembering old MAC addresses (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and I'm not able to get rid off it. Maintenance mode doesn't help, removing from pool doesn't help, can't rediscover because of repository (which is not presented to this server), restart of ovmm doesn't help, restart of that node doesn't help, can't change MAC in web interface and can't remove that server from pool.
So what can I do? If I unpresent second node from storage repository, remove it from pool, destroy pool and create pool again will be there those virtual machines on SAN disk as before of they will be deleted as well? Which "clever" person decided to go through web interface only? How can I remove server from cluster via CLI? And why it remembers old MAC addresses??????????
I'm trying not be ugly, but this is not enterprise ready project. It's parody. Most of the garage-origin project are much more enterprise ready then this one :-(

    Hi!
I'm working with the same case, I'll try to explain this once more + additional steps we tried.
We had fully functional cluster with 2 nodes, Node1 and Node2. Node1 overheated, shut down, all VM's migrated to Node2 and are working.MB was replaced by technical personnel. When server was brought up again, we see that new MAC addresses are in place in config files.
We can ssh to that box, no issue at all, network IS working properly.
On other server we have installed Oracle VM Manager. That "smart" manager can not get that Node1 has now different MAC, because that was the only thing which changed. We tried to rediscover the server for Node1, it complains that IP has changed and we need to delete Node1 from cluster and then rediscover the server (Job Internal Error (Operation)com.oracle.ovm.mgr.api.exception.IllegalOperationException: If the IP address of this server has changed, please delete the server: Node1, and re-discover.). Fine, we go do that, but now it complains that we can not do that because " OVMRU_002041E Cannot delete/remove pool file system: Pool filesystem for POOLNAME. Server pool: POOLNAME, still has servers in it". What the hell is that? It asks to remove whole pool filesystem just to remove the server which we need to add back again.
I tried to fixup the environment by this method (sh ./ovm_upgrade.sh dbuser=ovs dbpass=<password> --fixup) which did not work.
Then we tried to mess with MAC addresses in config files, we tried to set them to the OLD ones, which worked, our attempt was unsuccessful.
The question how to resolve this? To me this seems to be basic functionality, server burned down we need to replace it, we add it back and works. In Oracle VM solution this is not working, sad.

  • OVMS - Local display cuts out after boot DMS 59 Video Card

    Hey All -
We use OVM/OVS on what you might call 'desktop servers'. We have several setup. We recently purchased some more machines that I am installing OVS onto and will add them to the cluster.
However, these machines only video connection is DMS 59. As such, we are using a default DMS 59 to DVI splitter, and then just running a single connection from the splitter to a DVI capable monitor.
Using this, OVS can be installed. However, on each successive boot after installing the display will show GRUB, the boot, and then right before OVS loads its console the display ceases to function.
Now I assume this has to do with our DMS 59 connections - but I can't find any documentation about why this may not be supported or if I am missing a driver.
    Thoughts?

The bug is known, and a patch has been submitted: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80151. There's been no update since friday, so I wonder what the current status is, or if it's up for review at all.
Does anyone know how we can be notified when this patch hits the kernel?

  • Failed to add node to cluster

Hey, I am currently migrating my cluster.
I removed the server pool master according to the metalink note by doing a failover (stopped the agent on the server pool master)
Deleted the old master (node2) from the server pool.
Executed the cleanup script on node2 and switched it off
Modified the cluster.conf on the remaining node and remove the entries for the old master node2.
Replaced the old server with new hardware -
    same name - same ip.
Now I try to add this server to the server pool, but I get a timeout message
OVM-1006 Register Oracle VM Server (node2) Failed: errcode=00001, errmsg=CDS accquire lock /etc/ovs-agent/db/srv.lock timeout. locker process is 8339
    Where can I look ?

Did you remove the cluster rpms and then reinstall the rpms. I would
recommend following TID 3131978 and see if that helps.

  • OVM Manager 3.1.1 can't discover one of the servers

    Hi,
I have a weird problem with one of our OVM3 servers. Due to "System is initializing ..." errors I had to delete and recreate the OVM Manager DB. The operation went smoothly but after a restart I'm only able to discover one of the servers (soaovm2). We actually have each of the servers in a separate pool (self-tough best practice if you plan to use RAC on the VMs). So, as mentioned the second server was discovered just fine (with pool and everything) but the first server is refusing to get discovered:

I still get the same error. My suspicion is this has something to do with the one-node cluster pool the server is (was?) in. It seems to be working ok but I can't stop it:

I would appreciate any ideas here (preferably ones which wouldn't require rebooting guest VMs ...) as I have no clue what to try next.

I ran into this issue.  The fix for me was to restart the ovm manager (so on the ovm manager I ran "/etc/init.d/ovmm restart") and then I restarted the ovs-agent on the host. So I did "/etc/init.d/ovs-agent restart".
If you need to you can reset the ovs agent password from the host by issuing "ovs-agent-passwd oracle <password>".
    Hope this helps.

  • How to create EBS 12.1.1 cloning using OVM Manager

    Hi
We are currently running Oracle Application release 12.1.1 and Oracle Database 10.2.0.4.1 on IBM Power 5 on AIX 6.1.
We are in process of Migration the whole environment to Intel based platform our go LIVE date is 26th september 2013 and the vendor has configured the Oracle VM environment, they suggested us to use Oracle VM templates but we did the test migration using iso files of Linux(x86_64) and Oracle DB Home and Oracle Application Techstack
Source (2 server HACMP CLuster) Server1 DB and CONC, server 2 APPS
    Oracle Database 10.2.0.4.1
    Oracle Application 12.1.1
    AIX 6.1
Target (2 Servers OVM Cluster) Guest VM DB, Guest VM APPS
    Oracle Database 11.2.0.3.6
    Oracle Application 12.1.1
    Oracle Enterprise linux 6.4
    Oracle VM Hypervisor 3.2.3
    Oracle VM Manager 3.2.3
We have completed the migration by installation the OS, DB Home, APPS TECH stack using media because we were unable to get the latest templates from Oracle E-delivery, we need to create a clone of the current setup using OVM Manager and also cloning of EBS Database and APPS tier using the same method without running the cfgclone scripts, help needed.
    Thank you

  • OVM 2.2 and NFS Repository Problems

    Hi All.
I have recently started trying to upgrade our installation to 2.2
but have run into a few problems, mostly relating to the different
way that storage repositories are handled in comparison to 2.1.5.
We use NFS here to provide shared storage to the pools.
I wanted to setup a new two node server pool (with HA), so I upgraded
one of the servers to from 2.1.5 to 2.2 to act as pool master. That
worked ok and this server seems to be working fine in isolation:
    master# /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -l
    [ * ] 865a2e52-db29-48f1-98a0-98f985b3065c => augustus:/vol/OVS_pv_vpn
    master# df /OVS
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    augustus:/vol/OVS_pv_vpn
                   47185920 16083008 31102912 35% /var/ovs/mount/865A2E52DB2948F198A098F985B3065C
(I then successfully launched a VM on it.)
The problem is when I try to add a second server to the pool. I did
a fresh install of 2.2 and configured the storage repository to be the
same as that used on the first node:
    vm1# /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py --new augustus:/vol/OVS_pv_vpn
    vm1# /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -r 865a2e52-db29-48f1-98a0-98f985b3065c
    vm1# /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -l
    [ R ] 865a2e52-db29-48f1-98a0-98f985b3065c => augustus:/vol/OVS_pv_vpn
When I try to add this server into the pool using the management GUI, I get
    this error:
    OVM-1011 Oracle VM Server 172.22.36.24 operation HA Check Prerequisite failed: failed:<Exception: ha_precheck_storage_mount failed:<Exception: /OVS must be mounted.> .
    Running "repos.py -i" yields:
    Cluster not available.
Seems like a chicken and egg problem: I can't add the server to the pool without a
mounted /OVS, but mounting /OVS is done by adding it to the pool? Or do I have that
    wrong?
More generally, I'm a bit confused at how the repositories are
supposed to be managed under 2.2.
For exaple, the /etc/init.d/ovsrepositories script is still present,
but is it still used? When I run it, it prints a couple of errors and
    doesn't seem to mount anything:
    vm1# service ovsrepositories start
    /etc/ovs/repositories does not exist
    Starting OVS Storage Repository Mounter...
/etc/init.d/ovsrepositories: line 111: /etc/ovs/repositories: No such file or directory
/etc/init.d/ovsrepositories: line 111: /etc/ovs/repositories: No such file or directory
OVS Storage Repository Mounter Startup: [  OK  ]
Should this service be turned off? It seem that ovs-agent now takes
    responsibility for mounting the repositories.
As an aside, my Manager is still running 2.1.5 - is that part of the
problem here? Is it safe to upgrade the manager to 2.2 while I still
have a couple of pools running 2.1.5 servers?
    Thanks in adavance,
    Robert.

For exaple, the /etc/init.d/ovsrepositories script is still present,
but is it still used? No, it is not. ovs-agent now handles the storage repositories.
As an aside, my Manager is still running 2.1.5 - is that part of the
problem here? Yes. You absolutely need to upgrade your Manager first to 2.2 before attempting to create/manage a 2.2-based pool. The 2.1.5 Manager doesn't know how to tell the ovs-agent how to create/join a pool properly. The upgrade process is detailed in [the ULN FAQ|https://linux.oracle.com/uln_faq.html#10].

  • OVM 3: Storage network setup and MD3000i support

    Hi,
We have a OVM 2.2 cluster in test, and we are going to create a new OVM 3 cluster in the next 2 weeks to run JDE E9 (with a Dell R310 as manager and a Oracle X4170 M2 as main node (+ 2 Dell 2650 nodes that are currenlty running "plain" xen))
I'm going to use a Dell MD3000i as storage, which I don't understand if it's supported or no: for multipath it should use Dell's DRAC mpp drivers and not the standard multipath implementation. This is supported by OVM 2.2 -> DOC ID 960899.1 but there's no information on OVM 3. I've also open the SR 3-4488292901 but they said that it's not certified (of course). Has anyone tried it?
From the user guide I can't understand if the manager should be able to reach the iSCSI network: from my understanding it shouldn't, but how is it going to discover the disks?
    thanks

Oracle VM 3.0 should include the same Dell RDAC drivers as OVM 2.2, from my understanding. You may have to configure multipath.conf manually though.

    Thank you user9352542
I followed the following commands and was able to remove the server from the cluster.
    Tahks again
    Ran as follows:
    /etc/init.d/ovmm stop
NOTE: cat /u01/app/oracle/ovm-manager-3/.config (This provides some of the info you need to connect to your db if you have forgotten.)
    cd /u01/app/oracle/ovm-manager-3/bin/
    ./ovm_upgrade.sh fixup dbhost=localhost dbport=1521 dbsid=OVM dbuser=ovs dbpass=password
    This ran fixed errors.
    Restarted OVM Manager:
    /etc/init.d/ovmm start
