Hacked Address Book?

I am still on 10.5 (***** as Chrome is no longer updating browsers for this version).  My iMac cannot update to newer version.
But anywho.... I received a spam email wilh a link from my cousin's email address a month ago.  Just deleted it and told her about it.  But now I've received the same type of spam email for 2 other people that I know.  I am beginning to think that my mail address book has been hacked.  How do I check and see if it is? Just too strange that 3 mail accounts from friends send me the same type of spam email.
I use spam sieve, but it doesn't catch the ones from my friend's email addresses.
I never click on a link, open a document or go to websites that at suspicious.  I have been very careful; but apparently not careful enough.
Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Patrice

You could check to see if the spam related passwords are all on the same web site. If so it is almost certain that an automatic email harvester has picked them up and sold them around the world. Email harvesting from the web costs very little and can collect millions of passwords.
Most people use disposable passwords for web sites that insist on having them.
If you edit the site you can deter harvesters by encoding the password or replacing @ with at etc.
The most effective deice I have found is to use an image so anybody wishing to use it has to type what they see - better still if you use JavaScript to delay image display let me know if you want details of this.

  • Address book icon is suddenly disappearing.  It is now just 1/2 visible.  Am I being hacked?

First time I need to ask a question.  Am I being hacked? The icon on the bottom of the screen for my Address Book, the little gold symbol, just got tons of lines on it and now has only half the picture visible.  When it first happened today, I turned the computer off, did it 2 more times, looked and installed "software updat" but now it is getting smaller and smaller.  Am I being hacked, if yes, what do I do?
    Thank you.

  • My email account has been hacked and my address book has been used to send unsolicitated emails to all my contacts, how can I stop this activity

My email account has been hacked and my address book has been used to send unsolicitated emails to all my contacts.

    First of all
Run windows in safe mode (with network) and change your password on your email account.
    Then
run several anti-malware programs (there are many free ones, but not all are trustworthy)
    Malwarebyte >> http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
    Microsoft Safety Scanner >> http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
    Windows Defender >> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-defender

    Kasperky >> http://www.kaspersky.com/security-scan
    Rootkit scanner TDSS-Killer >> http://support.kaspersky.com/5350
And when all is clean, change password for your email account again.

  • HT4759 Address book hacked and virus problem since using iCloud

Had my address book hacked, and virus emails sent to all since using icloud.  Help!! none available on line!

You're posting in the "iCloud on my Mac" forum, but your profile just says "PC"... are you accessing iCloud from a Mac or a PC? If it's a PC, they get hit by viruses that do this sort of thing all the time. If you're using a Mac, it's almost certainly not malware of any kind. In the latter case, see Someone is sending messages from my e-mail address!

  • How do I mport address book from thunderbird?

my yahoo email was hacked and my address book entries deleted. I have many of these on Thunderbird but do not know how to import directly from Thunderbird. (When I convert the Tbird address to an csv file and then try to import - nothing happens for hours.) Is there a better way - other than a manual typing of all the address entries?
I tried to import the csv file (now an excel file) three different times on two platforms - Windows 7 (64 it) and Windows XP Pro

Open your Gmail account on the webpage, select Contacts in the upper left, click More/Export..., select vCard format, Export, and save the contacts.vcf file.
In TB (or Address Book), Tools/Import...Address Books...vCard file...select the contacts.vcf file. You may have to close and reopen Address Book for the new contacts address book to show its contents.

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

  • Printing Mailing Labels from Address Book

Stupid question, but one that is driving me crazy.
How do you print a sheet of mailing labels from Address Book but when the entire sheet of labels is the SAME label?
I can print labels successfully in address book, can select the label type and number, etc.
However, when I select a single contact, I can't find a way to print up an entire sheet of labels (e.g. 14) of all the same contact - it only prints one label of the single contact.
Please help! I know it must be a simple fix but can't find it anywhere to select as an option.

OK, weird that this morning (one day after you posted this question) I had the same question. I just want to print some return address labels for my own company. While I haven't been able to find a software based way to do it, I did think up a workable (if a bit ridiculous) hack. Copy the address you want to fill the sheet of labels with however many times there are labels on the sheet and select those however many copies and click print! I created 30 copies of my own company's address in Address Book, selected them, and printed a sheet of labels without problem. A bit dumb, but it works!
    Hope that helps.

  • How did Nickname field in Address Book get filled in?

I went to send an email to myself (I send to-do lists to myself because I forget everything ) from my imac and when I typed in my name, I noticed that in front of all of my email addresses, the label "Princess" was showing up. I had NEVER seen this before and this is NOT a nickname that I use for myself EVER. I started to get kind of nervous that anybody who sends me an email or gets an email from me is seeing this (corny) nickname. I could not understand where it came from. I send emails to myself quite often and this was the first time I had seen this.
I went into my Address Book and sure enough under my name, there was a field I had never even known existed, "Nickname". It somehow filled in with "Princess". How the heck did this happen? The only other person with access to my imac is my husband and he is not imac savvy, he definitely didn't do it. I started to get nervous that something was hacked, I just really don't know how something like that could happen.
Has this happened to anyone else?
    Thanks,
    Kate
    (definitely not a princess)

That is weird...someone had to have put it there; either that, or Apple knows something about you and automatically populated that field.
If you are worried someone has unauthorized access to your account, though, you can just change the password and security questions.  I try to change my password and questions at least once a year even if I don't suspect any unauthorized access.
You can also remove the nickname field entirely under Contacts' preferences.

  • How do I print a page of return labels in Address Book?

How do I print a page of return labels in Address Book?

Okay, it's a bit of hack, but standby..
Setup your address (that you want printed) in contacts app
    Copy that address
Paste 30 times (or however many labels you have per page)
Select those 30 duplicate entries, and go to print
Viola! (When you are done you can delete the excess entries)

n Mac Mail on OS 10.5.8 I am receiving bogus emails which claim to be sent by people in my address book, but actually are not.  How does this happen and how can I correct this problem

    You said:
I am receiving bogus emails which claim to be sent by people in my address book, but actually are not.
    ...and:
Are you saying that my address book has not been hacked into?  That others are getting these email addresses from another source?
This confuses me.  Are you saying that you are receiving bogus e-mails from some of your contacts, or are you saying that they are receiving bogus e-mails from you?
If the latter, there are a number of reasons that people might be getting e-mail from you.  Malware, though technically possible, is extremely unlikely.  See Someone is sending messages from my e-mail address!
If the former, that's rather unusual.  The only decent explanation I can think of is that a bunch of your Windows-using contacts got infected with something and their machines are being used to spam everyone in their contact lists, which would include you.

  • Address Book Adds Carriage Return to Street Field on Import

I've been having some fun and games trying to import a large list of addresses in a tab delimited file into the Address Book. After finally managing to sort out all the issues with importing the file, I have now discovered that the value for the Street in all of the imported addresses has a carriage return (\r) character appended to them. There was not a carriage return present in the tab delimited file.
I doublechecked the Address Book entries using Applescript to inspect the final character of the Street field and it was indeed a carriage return.
I presume that this is due to the mapping of fields in the Address Book to the columns in my file. The Address Book allows you to enter 2 values for the Street, yet I am only using the first one with the second one being set to be ignored.
However, the import still adds the carriage return character despite the second Street field not being required. It's not obvious that this is happening when viewing entries in the Address Book, yet when it comes to printing the imported addresses onto labels, a blank line is left due to the empty second Street field.
If I edit the card and amend the Street field to, say, add a comma to the end of the Street or, take it away, the problem disappears. I don't want to manually edit all the imported address of which I have 275. Is there a workaround for this, or some Applescript that will automatically edit all the Street entries to remove the carriage return?
Is anyone else experiencing this? Could this be classified as a bug?
Before someone suggests I use the thirdparty Address Book Importer, I have tried that too and it also results in the same problem.
    Stuart
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The blank line appears when looking at the addresses through applications like SOHO Labels and Envelopes or Imprint. The problem is that the carriage return is added by the Address Book as it is being imported, rather than the carriage return being there already, so loading the tab delimited file into a spreadsheet will not show any carriage return characters.
In the end I cooked up some Applescript to go through the Address Book and strip out any trailing carriage returns from the Street field for all addresses. I'm no Applescript guru, but the following seemed to do the trick:
    tell application "Address Book"
    set thePeople to every person
    repeat with thePerson in thePeople
set theAddresses to every address of thePerson
    repeat with theAddress in theAddresses
set streetinfo to street of theAddress
if streetinfo ends with "\r" then
set streetinfo2 to (text of characters 1 thru -2 of (streetinfo as string) as string)
set street of theAddress to streetinfo2
    end if
    end repeat
    end repeat
    save addressbook
    end tell
The other alternative was to write a script to parse my file in something like Ruby and then use Applescript to add the records rather than use the Address Book import feature. That would probably have given me some flexibility with being able to add multi-line notes, but the above was quicker to hack together.

  • Printing long notes from address book.

My notes in my addresses can be two or three pages long. For some reason when I print an address, using the LIST style, only what fits in the first printed page appears and the rest does not get printed. Any idea?

I have a Mac 10.5.8 op system.  My Contacts do not syn with I cloud.  Trying to get my address book complete on both systems and now I have lots of duplicates on I cloud adress book.  How do I efficiently merge the duplictes that are now on I cloud?

You cannot use iCloud with Leopard 10.5.8. The minimum requirement is Lion 10.7.2. If you have been syncing your contacts with iCloud you can only have been doing it by some sort of unsupported hack, and if it doesn't work it's unlikely to be possible to find an explanation. If you have been using other (compliant) devices by trying to sync using both iTunes and iCloud you are likely to get duplicates.
A computer old enough running Leopard may well not be upgradeable to Lion or Mountain Lion, but if you can do so this is the only way you are going to be able to make proper use of iCloud.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). (If you are currently pre-Snow Leopard you will have to upgrade to that to access the Mac App Store: it's available in the online Apple Store.)
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
