Had dupes of emails; now no contacts - iCloud w/iPhone 4

Hi,
Yesterday I kept getting duplicate emails from people on my iPhone 4 and I tracked down the problem to iCloud. I had MobileMe and somehow have both a .mac and a .me email address (I've never used the .mac). I checked my phone and since I couldn't tell what the problem was (I had both iCloud and MobileMe showing as accounts for my email) deleted both and re-added my main .me account. The duplicate emails went away. About an hour ago all of my contacts did as well. I am too confused right now. Any suggestions? I tried calling Apple since I have Apple Care, but apparently that was on my recently smashed iPhone 4 and I can't afford the $30 for phone support.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Tony Adams

FYI: It seems it was a network problem with my WinXP PC. After complete deletion and new installation of XP and iTunes my iPhone will be recognized correctly, Wifi synchronization works (mostly) fine.

  • Signed up for iCloud, but now no contacts on my iPhone (3G)

My aging iPhone 3G has really gone bonkers since I signed up for iCloud.
The main problem is that my Address Book doesn't sync - in fact it's been completely deleted from the iPhone, though it's fully intact on the iMac.
After noting its erasure, I restored the iPhone to its factory settings, but to no avail.
It doesn't make any difference whether I click the Contacts checkbox under Advanced or not - still no details.
Another bizarre observation - which may provide a clue - is that when opening iPhoto with the iPhone plugged in, it shows both the old (pre-restore) name and the new (post-restore) name, as if two iPhones were connected.  This does not happen in iTunes, which only shows the new name.
Given my hopeless memory for phone numbers now (due in no small part to total lack of use), this iPhone has now been rendered useless for its primary function as a phone, except to call home - the only number I can remember!  (What a chump I feel!)
Anyone have the same/similar problems, and have you managed to resolve them?  Any sane help appreciated.
    Thanks... Tony

In the absence of any replies, I'd forgotten that I'd posted here, but I did manage to sort out the problem eventually.
I forget all the steps involved, and possibly some which may be pertinent, but in essence somewhere in the iCloud signup procedure I'd clicked something that told Address Book to upload to the Cloud, and otherwise remain invisible on the Mac.  Tinkering with the Address Book preference settings eventually restored the Contacts list to my iPhone.

  • Updated email not showing in iCloud on iPhone

I have already changed my email on iCloud but my previous email is still showing up in iCloud next to "Account".
Does anybody know how to change the address on the phone?

If you simply renamed you Apple ID, just go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  This only deleted the account from the phone, not from iCloud.  It will also delete the data you are syncing with iCloud, but provided that you are signing back into the same account (just with a new ID name), it will be synced back to your phone when you sign back in.
If you created a new Apple ID, you'll need to create a new iCloud account with this ID and migrate your data to the new account.  To do this, first go to Settings>iCloud on your phone and turn all data you are syncing with iCloud (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off.  When prompted choose to keep the data on your iPhone.  After everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using your new ID, then turn syncing for your data (contacts, etc.) back to On.  When prompted, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to your new account.
Note: If you have any photos in your photo stream that are more than 30 days old and don't have them in your camera roll or backed up to your computer, you must first save them to your camera roll before deleting the iCloud account or you will lose them.  To do this, open the photo stream album on your iPhone in the thumbnail view, tap Edit, tap all the photos to select them, tap the share arrow button, then tap Save to Camera Roll.

I had 2 MobileMe email addresses, but only went thru iCloud process with one (my main address). Now the secondary address is not working with iCloud. Did I have to go thru the process with each address? Can I still get that secondary address to work with iCloud?

It was totally separate. I just now went back to a previous email from Apple to that secondary address which urged me to transition to iCloud. I followed the link and it prompted me thru the process and the address is now able to send/receive emails. Thanks.

First, don't unsubscribe.  This only tells the spammer that your email address is valid and they will send even more.
If this is only being sent from a few specific email addresses, you can set up a rules on icloud.com similar to the image below to send them to the trash.  This describes how to set up a rule: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mm6b1a3f8a.

With the new iCloud I now get all of my wife's contacts on my iPhone.  Is there a way to restore just my old contacts to my phone?

Only if a backup of the iPhone with all that data on it exists.  If one does, restore the iPhone using that backup.

  • How to get contacts unlinked from old email and put onto iCloud

I have an OLD hotmail account I haven't used in 10+ years that I was using as my Windows Live login when I had a Windows phone a few years ago. I linked it when I got my iPhone, and I think it became associated with a lot of my contacts. Now, I don't have the people's numbers saved in the Hotmail account, which has been deactivated due to inactivity (but I can still log in if I so desired) but those contacts are attached to that email address in my phone. There are about 50 of them and are all the important ones, my oldest friends and family etc. Lately I've been having issues with my phone and have either had to restore it or my contacts just disappear out of the blue, and every time I have to re-sync it with three different email addresses to get all my contacts. I really want to get the contacts unassociated with the Hotmail account and have them all together on my iCloud. It seems like it should be something fairly straightforward and simple, but I cannot figure it out. Any insight? Thanks in advance.

To do this, do the following:
Reactivate and sync the Hotmail contacts back to you phone.  Confirm that they appear in the Contacts app.
Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (any iCloud contacts will still be in iCloud).
Download the app My Contacts Backup. Use the app to back up the remaining contacts on your phone (from Hotmail) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself.  Confirm that you have received the email.
Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section), and set this to iCloud.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars…tap your Hotmail account and turn off contacts syncing with Hotmail.
Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from the other accounts back to your device, and to iCloud.
Confirm that all your contacts are in iCloud, including your Hotmail contacts.  If so, you can delete the Hotmail account from your phone again.
If you're having trouble with contact syncing, continue to use the app to make periodic backups of your contacts so you don't lose them.

My husband and I share an Itunes account so use the same email address and password.  Our iphones are now connected and we get each other's messages and share each other's contacts.  How can we stop this happening?

    A couple of different approached:
Create a second AppleID for one of you that includes the email address and phone number you wish to use for messaging, but do not apply it to the iTunes and app store (just keep the current one). My wife and I do this and it works quite well. Also allows for easier syncing of Contacts , notes etc. using icloud if you wish to do that.
Add additional emails/phone numbers to the existing account and change the Send/Receive settings for Messages. this will not fix the Contcts isues for you however.

    Hi,
I got my phone a couple of years ago and when it came in the mail, I wasn't home so my brother decided to set up my iPhone for me because he was so desperate to check the phone out. My iCloud account has been his account and it's been set up under his e-mail since the day I got my phone. Once he bought an iPhone, he set it up under the same e-mail account and now we share it. It's so annoying because all of my pictures and stuff are stored in my iCloud, but that's under his e-mail and I really want a new iCloud account but I want to transfer all of my iCloud information and pictures to my e-mail without losing them. Randomly, my brother has been receiving some of my facetime calls and I even turned it off so that it is only set on my device. I didn't even know he received any of my facetime calls until the other day when my friend told me. Now, our contacts are shared and I don't want that either. At one point during the summer, he was receiving my text messages as well. I turned all of those off under settings so they wouldn't be shared on his device, but I need to find a way to carry my iCloud stuff and set it up in a my own completely separate account. Please, please help me. I really am getting so frustrated with it and neither of us want to delete our accounts because we don't want to lose our iCloud stuff.

    Thank you for your reply.
I am somewhat new to iOS and OS having grown up with DOS and Windows. I am not familiar with IMAP and iCloud and I am not even sure which types of servers my various emails use.
The problem I would anticipate with iCloud is that (I assume) it would limit my access to data (including mail) on the iCloud to when I happen to be logged onto the internet. I also assume(?) that large files (photos etc.) would require some time to download whenever I wish to access them from whichever device I happen to be using (I hope I am wrong about this).
I have kept my devices to 500gb - 1TB for OS and 32gb - 128gb for iOS but since I have pretty slow WiFi (shared with DirecTV Whole Home and Netflix streaming) it is my impression that iCloud might be quite limited due to data transfer times.
Perhaps a factor would be that I have 2 DSL lines and my main DSL line is connected to two wireless routers (to also provide WiFi in a metal building that blocks WiFi and Cellular signals)
I may be totally wrong in my assumptions regarding iCloud. My mail is not so urgent that I need access to it instantly and I could wait until I had internet access or I can get it on my iPhone. My main concern with iCloud would be my data files (Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers etc.).
On the other hand, if I wanted to keep my 10,000 emails that would take up a lot of iCloud memory and I don't know how to measure how much storage it would take or how to move Hotmail or even iCloud mail to iCloud.
It may take me some time to figure this out.

You have now exceeded your iCloud storage, including an additional amount provided to allow you to continue receiving email. As a result, you will not be able to send or receive new email messages with your iCloud email address until you free up storage space or buy more storage. I have 20GB remaining.  WHat is the issue here?

Today I received the same message but have 4.6gb available from a total of 5.0gb. I also received the same message when i first set up my icloud account and icloud was virtually empty. Unfortunately the only way i can see to contact apple is to pay for a telephone call. If anyone knows what is going on i would appreciate knowing.

  • I changed jobs and had to change emails/Apple ID.  Before doing so, I did not save my photos from the photo stream to the camera roll.  Now, all the old pictures that are still on my iPhone are not streaming to the iPad, only new ones.  Please help.

I changed jobs and had to change email/AppleID.  Before doing so, I did not copy the pics on the photo stream of my iPad to the album and now the only pics being synce with my iPad are new pics either saved or taken on phone.  Old pics are still on phone.  There has to be a way to get these pics to be able to stream them on to iPad, right?

You have a couple of options to get them in your photo stream:
    Open the photos one at a time and take a screenshot.  This will add a new low resolution copy of the photo to the camera roll, which will then upload to your photo stream;
    Email the photos a few at a time to yourself, then save the attached photos to your camera roll.  This will add a copy of the photo at full resolution to your camera roll and upload to photo stream;
Use an app like PhotoSync, which will allow you to wirelessly transfer copies of all your old photos to your computer all at once.  Then delete these photos from your camera roll and use PhotoSync to transfer them back from your computer to your camera roll.  These will be the original resolution and will upload to your photo stream.  (You need an app like this because iTunes will not transfer photos back to your camera roll, where they must be in order to add to your photo stream.)
Or, you can add them to a shared stream and invite yourself as a subscriber (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmc0cd7e99).  The shared stream will appear on your iPad and you can either leave things this way, or save them to the camera roll on your iPad and delete the shared stream.  They won't be in your photo stream but they will at least be on your iPad.
