Had issue with Powerpoint, so yesterday updated Word for Mac 2011 to v. 14.41 - now lots of functionality missing from Word as well as Powerpoint. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi - Word for Mac 2011 has been working fine. Yesterday suddenly couldn't edit into Powerpoint pptx from a PC (something I used to be be able to do). Got the latest update for Word for Mac 2011, so now running v. 14.4.1 on my iMac, which operates under OS X 10.8.5. Word is now playing up - and I seem to have lost functionality - bullets and numbered lists, 'find' function and more besides broken. I'm swamped with work that I need to do in Word and Powerpoint and welcome any ideas.

Try an Office alternative.  It sounds like you have some data corruption.  Is your data backed up?

  • Default font issue in Word for Mac 2011 on Mavericks.

I'm using Word for Mac 2011 on Mavericks. When I copy Chinese text into a Word document, Word for some reason assigns it a Japanese font (MS 明朝). When I try to switch between English and Chinese input methods (command + space), the system constantly defaults to Japanese input. This can even happen if I save the entire document (command + A) in Chinese font (宋体). Where can I change this behaviour? I've looked in Word Preferences and System Preferences but can find nothing.
    Notes:
    a. This behaviour is not just a Word problem. It never happened in OS 10.6.
    b. Please don't tell me to just close the Japanese IME because I also use Japanese.

Apple preferences are kind of irrelevant for Word.  The place to look for Tools > Language is in the Word menu itself.  And the keyboard/font matching box is in Word preferences/Edit/Editing Options.

I have a document that always shows the "markup" (changes) when I open the document. No matter how many times I uncheck  View-Markup (and do a save) it always comes back next time. Anyone know how to turn if off permanently for this document? Thanks.
Oh, and if it matters, this is a password-protected document.

  • MS Word for Macs 2011 in Mavericks - can you help with text formatting?

When I try to copy and paste text in MS Word for Macs 2011 (14.3.9) the text doesn't retain its formatting. I'm running a year old 27" iMac with OS 10.9.1 Mavericks. My other Mac is still running OS 10.8.5 and the same verision of Word works fine.
    Any ideas?

    Works fine, here.
I've found it difficult to actually nail down what causes the odd behaviors in Office. I think it is due to the config files scattered all over, never knowing which one to delete.
However, you may be able to isolate the problem to your own account, or to the system by trying two things:
    1) Log into another user account (a new one would be good, or Guest) and try there.
    2) Boot into Safe Mode and try there: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If it works in 1, then there is something in your account causing the issues.
If it works in 2, then the something is third-party software.

When I use word for mac 2011 (last update), in a random way it crash and i lost my work. I try to repair disk permission but is the same story.
    Anyone can help????

Just reinstall Office. Use the uninstaller in the MS Office folder to remove the corrupt preference files that are creating the crashes. And, iMacRDQ has the right idea. Pages is a much better app. Actually, the whole iWork suite is much better than MS Office.
A little note about repairing permissions: It is only applicable for Apple software and not for third party stuff, especially anything made by 'that other company'.

  • Problem selecting text in PDF created by MS Word for Mac 2011

I'm viewing PDFs in Adobe Digital Editions 4.0, and when I try to select text, the text that actually gets selected is 1-2 lines BELOW where the cursor (I-bar) is located.  This makes highlighting text extremely difficult.  This only seems to happen with PDFs that were created in MS Word for Mac 2011 and viewed in Adobe Digital Editions.
If I try opening the very same PDF file in Adobe Reader, the cursor highlights text just fine.  If I open it in Preview, it works fine too.  It just won't work when viewing the PDF in Adobe Digital Editions.
    System:  Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite
I have not been able to find any info on this issue anywhere, and if anyone knows a fix or workaround, I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks; this last reply came closest to 'solving' the issue. While I selected font sub, it at first had no affect on the document.
I then went back to prefs and set the compatability dropdown from 'Custom' (where it had defaulted) to 'Word 2004-2007', assuming these docs were created from a recent past Windows.
I 'Saved As' a Word for Mac " .docm "
Whoa... the extensions mean something. Your original problem (document shows bold, italic, underline, but tables and other complex formatting are lost) sounds as though the document was being exported as a .RTF, a Rich Text Format file. If you save as a .DOCM, that's a Word Macro Enabled Document. Regular Word 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 docs are .DOCX. Regular Word 97 through 2004 docs are .DOC. You need to save that document as a .DOCX or a .DOC or you're gonna have problems later.
    - and the documents appear normal (though I had to switch one to 'Portrait' as it for some reason wanted to display in landsacpe.
Normally you'd have to select page orientation.
So, poor testing on my part. I have no idea which of the above steps fixed it but I'm guessing the 'Save As' to my version of Word.
If so, it would appear the 'Compatability' feature was not working at least on these two documents.
Word's compatibility feature is supposed to ensure that a document you produce is compatible with the target version of Word. If you turn the compatibility stuff on then you will be warned if you are using Word 2007 through 2011 and you use a feature that earlier versions of Word do not have. Microsoft shipped a translator which works with Office 2003 and 2004 and which allows Word 2003 or 2004 to read Word 2007, 2008, 2010, or 2011 documents (.DOCX) and to save them as Word 97 through 2004 documents (.DOC) _as long as they don't have any incompatible features_. Word's compatibility features doesn't do much for .RTFs or for .DOCMs.

  • Help! Word for mac 2011 won't open files

    Hi,
I wasn't able to find a suitable category to place this question under, but hope someone can help all the same.
I have Word for Mac 2011 on my 2011 iMac. In the last couple of days, it has stopped opening files (by double-clicking on them, or by going to File > Open). Instead, I get an error message which reads:
"Document name" uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version
(The message then continues with smaller print, telling me how this is for security reasons but that I should be able to use File > Open to access the file - which I can't).
The only way I have found to open the files is by using File > Open and in the 'Enable' box choosing 'Recover Text from any file'. However, this is pretty unhelpful because I lose the file's logos and formatting.
Note that this problem happens to all files regardless of which version of Word they were created on.
Please help! I really need to access my Word docs...
    Thanks in advance.

I am also suddenly having this problem.  It seemed to start after I upgraded to Lion.  I had Word 2003 until I upgraded to Word 2011 last year, so I don't have 2008 to go back to.  The documents it won't open are just blank.  They will open with Open Office.  This is just so annoying!  I thought it was a Lion incompatibility, but you are saying it is a Microsoft problem?

  • Does Word for Mac 2011 have an "Overtype" option

I have MS Word for Mac 2011, and I want to be able to use Overtype when dealing with my Word documents but  Word for Mac 2011 does not seem to have any option for Overtype.  I have seen in on-line forums solutions for the problem in  Word
2010 and 2013  but no mention of Word for Mac 2011 solutions.   My version of Word does not have an "Options" option under "File", which is the solution to enabling "overtype" put forth for 2010 & 2013 versions.
Is it possible that there is no way to enable "overtype" in Word for Mac 2011?

  • Documents in Word for Mac 97-2004 don't open in Word for Mac 2011

I have some Word documents that have been created in Word 97-2004. I didn't have any trouble with opening them on my Mac until I updated Word for Mac to 2011. Now they don't open anymore and I get a message that the document type is blocked by Word for Mac

    Hi,
I created a PC Word 2010 template that bleeds on all 4-sides. The page size of the document is 5.5"X8.5". When trying to "Save As PDF" on the Word for Mac 2011 I get a .125"(1/8") white border on all sides. This

  • Flow text in Word for Mac 2011 works from page 1 to page 2, but not from page 2 to page 1. Does anyone know a fix for this, please?

Does anyone know how to get text to flow from page 2 to page 1 in Word for Mac 2011, please?
To try it, create a fair size text box on page 2 and fill it right up with text.
Next, reduce the text box size so that the text box is over-full.
Then Flow this overflow into a new text box on page 1.
What appears also disappears, especially if you try to print.

  • Word for mac 2011 keyboard commands hang when network disk mounted

After much trial and error, I have found that, for my system, at least, MS Word for Mac 2011 hangs on keyboard commands when a network disk is mounted on my desktop.
Just wanted to alert all who get the beach ball when use keyboard commands in MS Word.
Symptom was that Cmd-C would take 8-13 seconds or so to copy 1 word, versus immediate when using menu commands. Same with Cmd-V paste. Also, opening a document took much longer.
Once I ejected network disk, problem disappeared.
Hopefully this will save someone else the time I spent tracking down the issue. I'd still love to know the root problem, though, as I prefer to have a remoe disk mounted on desktop while I work, and now I can't.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
The effects of having actually used MacKeeper to do anything are a completely different matter. The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use such ill-conceived "cleaning" or "security" products. This is just one example of a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing damage that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

  • Full screen button in MS Word for Mac 2011?

Does anyone know how to add the full screen button (two diagonal arrows in the top right hand corner of most apps) to MS Word for Mac 2011? I don't want to use full screen mode. I just want to get Word to fill the screen without manual adjustment.

I recently had my hard drive replaced and had to reinstall Microsoft 2011. I know for a fact that I had the diagonal arrows before and now they are gone. I have searched high and low on how to get them back on with no luck.
