Had to format hard drive, lost all my local files

So I had to move my OS to an external hard drive because my built in drive began to fail. When I did this, I lost all of my music in local files obviously. The thing is, it still shows up on my mobile playlists, but they don't show at all (not even greyed out text) on my desktop version. Why can't I see them at all? I wanted to go through and redownload them all, but this makes it very difficult. Help please! EDIT: Ok, so I figured out how to see them (I didn't have the "Show unavaliable tracks in playlists check). So now, my question is there anyway to pull them from my phone onto my computer? Or do I need to download them one by one?

Sadly I have to say no there is not a way. The sync of local music files is one way, meaning from laptop and/or PC to phone and/or approved mp3 players.

It has always been very basic to always maintain  abackup copy of your computer.  Do you not have a backup copy?

  • Fromatted hard drive, lost all apps......

I had to fromat my Hard Drive last week and now when I connect my Ipod touch all the APPS have gone from my Library.
Is there any way i can Transfer them back from the Ipod to Library, or anyway I can recover them. Or is it bad news and I have to buy them all over again

    I have the same problem...
I did "transfer purchases" - the apps, however were not transferred - just songs.
The app section in devices tab in iTunes is greyed out. If I try "sync" I get the warning that my iPod is synced with another library. The only option I have is erasing content of my iPod and syncing it with the contents of new library (which is completely empty.
Any ideas how to fix it?
    I use iTunes 10.1.1.4 64 bit

  • I just got my first MacBook pro and dedicated an external hard drive for time capsule. I also have a WD 3TB hard drive with all my old files, photos and movies (mostly from a pc). My Mac book pro would not allow me to add or delete any files from this har

This hard drive so I copies all the files (400gb worth) to my time capsule hard drive (WD 3 TB but set up by the Mac book pro). Now I am not sure what I need to do. I wiped the other WD hard drive cleAn on my pc and want to set it up in a way that I can access the files on both a pc and a Mac. If I partition it on my MacBook pro will this work? If I do it do I need to save the file twice on both the pc and Mac partitions or simply by partitioning it the hard drive will ave files in both formats regardless of if it's from a pc or a Mac. X

  • I had to reinstall iTunes and lost the library, so I used what I had on my hard drive, but I have much more music on my iPod classic than is in the iTunes library. If I synch now will it delete all that extra music from my iPod?

I recently had to reinstall iTunes on my PC (Windows 7) and lost most of the library. I restored with what I had on my hard drive on the PC, but there is much more music on my iPod classic than is in the iTunes current library. I'm worried that if I synch now it will delete the extra music from my iPod, some of which I don't have available to re-rip etc.. Will this happen, or is it safe to synch more content without losing from the iPod what is already there but not in my iTunes library on the PC?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

You can't. It still thinks that your iPhone is synced with another iTunes library (the one that you had before you reformatted the hard drive.

If your hard drive was not backed up then you can download items purchased from the iTunes Store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Did you subscribe to iTunes Match service?  If you did, your other music would be available too.
Note, this restores the music files themselves, not playlists, playcount, ratings, or other things associated with the actual library file structure.
You really should consider getting a backup drive. Hard drives failures are a certainty and it saves a lot of grief.

  • I've had a new hard drive installed and reloaded all my stuff via time capsule and now can't connect to the internet although it say Airport is connected. How can I fix this problem ?

Just had a new hard drive for my iMac and reloaded all my stuff via time capsule, all works fine apart from Safari which won't connect to internet. Airport is connected but each time Safari comes back saying there is no connection....any help gratefully recieved.

So you have the apple rotuer called a time capsule  and you have complete the frist time machine back up? but there is not internet access ?
    If so.
Opem airport utiltiy on your Comptuer :
What is the IP ? > if its 169.254.xx.xx > its a self assigned
Try power cycling the Internet source  for up to 1 mintue and make sure all the lights  turn off.
    In Airport Utility Version 5.5.3 / 5.6.1
Gi > Intenret > conncetiong sharing > Is it off  bridge mode change it to share a public Ip address
    In airport Utility  version 6.0/6.1
Edit > network > rotuer mode : Should be DHCP and NAT unless you use PPPoE to conecnt to the internet then this is automatically invoked.

  • I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above.  Select the new disk on the list at the left.  Click the erase tab.  Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice.  Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase.  You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition.  Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them.  So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose.  You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

    From System Preferences/Help:
Reset your login password using your Apple ID
Before you can use your Apple ID to reset your login password, make sure that FileVault isn’t enabled on your computer.
Also make sure that an Apple ID is associated with your user account, and that an administrator has given you permission to reset your own password using an Apple ID. For more information, see this help topic:
Associate Apple IDs with your user account
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
In the login window, click the question mark in the password field, and then click the arrow in the dialog that appears.
Enter an Apple ID and password, and then click Reset Password.
I don't know if it works.

  • Recovering data from a newly formatted hard drive

Has anyone had any experience with programs that recover data from a newly formatted hard drive?  There seem to be a lot of programs out there to do this, but, a) do they work, and b) which one worked best for you?

Ive had so and so success with a freeware utility called "Recuva"
    http://www.recuva.com/
Its from the makers of CCleaner.

  • Advanced Format Hard Drive not recognized by HP DV6000 Controller

    Hello,
I have an HP DV 6000 laptop (6276 I think, I'm at work can't check) that came preinstalled with a Western Digital 160gb 1.5gb/s 5400 RPM drive (Vista) that failed a couple of weeks ago.  So i bought a Western Digital 750 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB drive to replace it. I read about people having some problems with Advanced Drive Format hard drives not being recognized by their controller, but also read that depending on the controller and specific Dv6000 model laptop they had-one wouldn't run into problems.
Well sure enough, when attempting to install Windows 7 I received the error that the hard drive was not detected. After researching online I came across an article on WD's site that noted
"Our SATA II hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our SATA II drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with SATA I data transfer rates. However, some older SATA I controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a SATA II hard drive."
my drive is a SATA ||| but I'm pretty sure it's the same problem.  The site goes on to say a fix would be to  "purchase and install a third party PCI or PCI-Express Second Generation Serial ATA controller card for your Serial ATA hard drive(s)."
    My question(s) are.
1)Is the problem that I am trying to install a Sata ||| hard drive on a laptop with a controller that will only recognize SATA | hard drive?
    2) Or is the problem that the hard drive is an Advanced Drive Formatted hard drive and I need to buy a hard drive with out that specification?
    3) Or Should I buy a SATA controller card as WD suggests on their website and if so will this definitely allow my laptop's controller to recognize the new hard drive and proceed with the installation?
4)Or Should I just return the hard drive and buy a SATA | non Advanced Drive Format hard drive? (question 2 basically)
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi @jasmine00
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I certainly understand your issue with the drive upgrade. Unfortunately it is a bit of the nature of notebooks, the sacrifice of a large amount of upgradeability, in exchange for compactness and portability. Whenever a new technology comes out, older notebooks are never really going to be easy to upgrade, it at all. Normally the unit as a whole is tested with a set list of hardware, and only those items are supported.
That being said there is this document that could be helpful with your problem.

  • Broken hard drive - lost library????

I have just had to replace the hard drive on my laptop. I have lost all my old files so there's no music on this new one. I have a few purchased songs from itunes that I've managed to move over but I don't know if I can move the other songs over that I imported of CD. Can anyone help me??? PLEASE????

*I have a few purchased songs from itunes that I've managed to move over*
    Moved from where, an iPod?
*don't know if I can move the other songs over that I imported of CD.*
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
