Had to install new hardrive, how do I get new operating system?

Friend took Mac to Apple store in Houston and  they diagnosed problem. I was told i needed new harddrive. I purchased new hard drive and then had help installing it. Friend told me to get Snow Leapord discs? There is not an Apple store in my city, closest one 3hrs away. I'm wondering if I can download something or if I need to get discs.
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Did your Mac come with discs? If so, insert the Mac OS X DVD you have and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, reinstall OS X.
You would have to erase the hard drive. To do it, open Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, choose the hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". If you haven't got the DVDs that came with your Mac, call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If your Mac didn't come with DVDs, start up in Internet Recovery. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your MacBook is starting up, and reinstall Mac OS X

  • Installed new operating system

I just installed a new operating system and had to re-install itunes. it counted that as one of my "uses" of my music library. how do i reset that so that I am able to use my new ipod?

Hello, Annie, and welcome to the Discussions.
Sorry, but what do you mean by "reset"? You shouldn't have to do anything special, as long as you have your content in iTunes. Just attach your iPod and it should offer to sync to the iTunes library automatically.
You may need to describe more fully what it is you're trying to accomplish.
    Regards.

  • After installing new operating system, I can't connect to internet from an e-mail. What is wrong?

After installing the new operating system, I can't access the internet from an e-mail request. What' wrong?

Finally gave in and called Apple Support.
    1) They had me restart while holding down the Option-Command-P-R keys (this resets the HW apparently. Didn't fix it.
    2) Next they had me move my System Preferences folder to the trash. Still didn't fix it.
    3) Lastly they had me move all my cache files to the trash and then empty the trash. Restarted and it seems to be fixed now.
I was told that sometimes after an upgrade if you don't "delete all your caches" that there can be problems. I'll have to see if the connection holds up since before the problem was intermittent, but at least now I have a case number and all seems well so far.
I encourage those who are experiencing issues to please call Apple Support - it appears that there is no one fix and it depends on so many different factors. If this issue re-appears I'll be back on the phone with them - plus I'll update this thread.
    Thanks!

  • After installing new operating system windows 7 on imac 27, mac stopped working.

We bought new imac 27, late 2012. Installed windows 7, mac stopped working. We restarted mac os, but system cant see hard disk. Cant install mac. What to do?

How did you install Windows 7?  Via Boot Camp, using a Windows 7 system builder disk, or with Parallels or VMWare's Fusion?
If you installed using Boot Camp, it sounds as if you goofed and installed Windows onto the Mac partition instead of the Windows partition.  What happens when you hold down the Option key when you restart the Mac?  Do you see a Mac partition and a Windows partition?
I would suggest seeing if you can use the Recovery mode on your new iMac to reinstall your iMac's operating system if you installed Windows over it by mistake.  Please see this Apple Support document on how to accomplish this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11273?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If you installed Windows using Parallels or Fusion, I can't help you, as I've zero experience with either.

  • Can I install new operating system without wiping out all of my programs- some of which were free

Can I upgrade my OS without clearing out all programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, Office, etc as well as all files that I do not want to lose because many of the programs were free and do not have portable storage drive?

You can upgrade the OS without clearing out your programs or files, however that's no guaranty that those programs will continue to work in the new OS.
And if you plan to jump over operating systems, like going from 10.4 to 10.6 or 10.5 to 10.7 that that will require wiping the drive of all programs and installing the new OS fresh.
So perhaps you better start by telling us some details about your present hardware specifications, your computer model (like MacBook Pro 3,1) your OS X version, your RAM amount, your hard drive size, software you absolutely need, others that you can perhaps do without, and what and where you want to go etc. Also if you want to spend money and how much.
You can find out about your machine by Apple Menu>About this Mac>More information.
Your question is rather lacking on details, and people don't update their signatures so we can't go by that.

  • Role of S Partition in Installing New Operating System

    Hello,
I've been taking a look on here and understand that the Q partition is for the backup to factory settings and the S partition is part of the start up system (working with a 2009 T400). I am looking to install Windows 7 and have no interest in keeping my XP system recoverable.
Therefore I can delete the Q partition but is there anything special I have to do in regards to the S partition? Or is it a plug and play situation once I put in the Win7 disk?
    Essentially
-Can I delete the S: drive?
-If it remains partitioned, will it need to change in some way with the new OS?
-During Win7 set up which partition do I select to install on?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello and welcome,
Since you don't intend to save anything let the Win 7 installer use the whole drive.  It will partition appropriately.
(IIRC) When you get to the partitioning part of the install select advanced disk options and delete all the partitions. Then just let the install continue from there.

  • IMac DV won't install new Operating System on erased HD

Hi all. My iMac recently failed on every boot up and as I only use it as a music jukebox (I have a 20" G5 iMac for other things), I thought I'd erase the Hard drive and reload Panther. It previously ran 10.3.9 very well.
The iMac boots up off the Panther CD and starts loading the system onto the Hard Drive, then about 3 minutes it gives the error "the installer has quit due to an unexpected error (exit code 0) , please restart your computer". It does this when trying to load Panther or Jaguar.
Not I am stuck, I have a HD which is recognised by the iMac but I can't load any operating system on. At start up without the Panther CD istalled, all I get now is the finder folder with a flashing question mark and apple face logo.
    I am desperate.....any suggestions.....

    Mike, thanks for the advice.
I did a futher test. I ran the Disk Utility at installation with the following results:
    1) select Maxtor 76.34 MB, clicked "erase" (with install os9 drivers selected)
    2) Got "setting up partition map", and "filesys on system" messages were both successful
    3) Ran First Aid on the volume "Untitled" disk Verify Disk command says "The volume verified appears to be OK. Ran First Aid on "76.34GB Maxtor" and got the same result.
    4) Continued with Install and got to "select a destination disk" and I selectd disc "untitled 76.3GB" then continue
    5) Clicked Install.
    6) Got the following messages: "Preparing the disk, preparing osx, preparing the base system, preparing essential system software, preparing the bsd subsystem then "you need to restart your computer" message.
It tends to be a different thing every time. Sometimes when I initially verify the volume or disc I get errors and have o do a repair. I get a message saying the repair has worked, but without a successful load result.
I guess I should be buying a new Hard Drive....
Will a 7200 rpm drive be ok in the iMac wrt heating issues (I cant get a 5400 any more).?
    cheers
    steve

  • Installing New Operating System

Is there any way to install an operating system that was made for a different apple machine. Each time I try to do it, it tells me that it can't install the bundled apps on my computer. I would like to just install the OS, but there doesnt seem to be that option...

Ah, now I probably see my problem. The game is Law and Order: Dead on the Money. Was made for 10.2.8 However, there was some kind of problem with Java and Java 3D and, so, they made a patch for it. However, the patch only works with 10.3 (or so I thought). It probably works for 10.3 or higher, but not on Intel Macs. So, I've got my MacBook which has an appropriate operating system but an Intel chip and I've got my eMac with the right hardware, but only 10.2.8. I've got my copy of 10.4 that came with my MacBook that I can't install and my copy of 10.3 that came with my brother's MacMini that I can't install. Frustrating...

  • After installing new operating system software, my user account name has been changed and i don't know the password.

    i need help!
I just installed Mac OS Maverick in my laptop, but when i checked the Users&Groups There are only 2 User name 1 is  "Apple(admin) and 2 is Guest, my user account name has been changed even the password. how can i retrieve my old user account name and password or how can i changed it?

Here's an updated set of instructions you can try:
Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless using iCloud Photo Library).  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).

  • What is the best way to backup my Macbook Pro before I install new operating system?

I want to back it up externally. I don't know how to burn a CD on my macbook and that may be an option. What other options are out there that will back up everything stored on my laptop. Thanks!

DO BOTH, your data is worth more than the price of drives these days. (Think about about what your data is worth to you vs. a few bucks.
Most of the long time users here advocate this method, a clone, and a TM data backup.
I also use an archive drive to store pics, vids, music, to keep my internal drive relatively empty. his helps keep the internal drive from having to search extensively (taking more time & putting more use on it, increasing the failure factor) while still having the backups... well for backups, and this allows me to access and manipulate those files without disrupting the back ups.
I think I spent about $400 for the 3 drives, well worth it, it's not if your drive will fail, rather when.

  • Installing new operatoring system via firewire

I like to reinstall my snow leopard, via firewire.

Sometimes there are options available that are chip agnostic!    Now a lot has to happen to make it work.   When you put a computer with a fast enough superdrive for the installer DVD itself in Target Disk Mode, holding the T key at startup before hooking up the Firewire cable, it effectively becomes not just an external hard disk, but also an external Firewire optical drive.     Now this won't work if the DVD burner in the G4 is too slow.   But the CPU is meaningless in of itself when the machine is in target mode.   It basically has been converted into nothing more but an external drive that is very expensive and bigger than usual.  Not knowing the speed that the 10.6 official installer is burnt at, and not knowing the speed of the G4's optical drive, we can't strictly eliminate as a potential external optical drive in Target mode.   It is worth a try in a pinch, as in Target mode it is asking for the host's CPU to do the installation, and not the G4.   It may not work, but it won't give you the wrong drivers as long as the host supports 10.6.

iTunes will not show my purchases before October 18, when I had a different username.  How do I get the older purchases (more than 5,000) listed when my password is rejected and it won't issue a new one for that username?

Wow that was really quick, thank you so much.  Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it.  I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names.  isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,

  • I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
