Hairline between adjacent text frames

The attached Indesign CS4 document has two text frames with a black background that touch near the bottom of the document.  When I look at this document in preview mode in InDesign, there is a horizontal hairline between the two text frames.  When I export this document as a pdf the hairline is not present.
Does anyone know what is causing this?

I thnink this is a display anomaly. That white line is really the graphic behind the upper frame showing through, which will become much more apparent if you remove the stroke from the two frames. It seems to disappear if you zoom in.

  • Uneven color between background text frame and underlying frame fill

    Hi. I'm using InDesign CS3 on Windows XP.
    On my document, the main heading is in a frame with a fill of 'None'. The heading text has a bevel and emboss. The text frame sits on a background A4 frame which is filled with a Pantone spot colour.
    When I print the cover page, the color filling the text frame is slightly different from the background Pantone color, even though the text frame has no color fill.
    When I checked the document before printing in View>Overprint Preview, it appeared to be fine. The PDF also looked fine. In both situations, I could not discern a color difference but it is there in the printed document.
    To provide a color behind the text which matches the fill color of the frame occupying the whole page, what should I do? My gut feel is to select the background frame and the text frame and check the knockout box on the effects panel or something like that.
    I hope I have explained sufficiently clearly the problem I am experiencing.
    Look forward to hearing your suggestions.
    Thanks

  • After Effects CS6: Adjacent text layers overlap by one frame, can't fix it

    Adjacent text layers, which we are using to subtitle bits of video, butt up against each other and in some instances it's fine (the text changes at the correct frame), but in others the text from the first one bleeds by one frame into the second and overlaps. If I shorten the time on the first one by one frame, there is a gap with no text. How can I fix this? The comp is built from the video so the frame rate of the comp is the same for the video file.
    Thanks for any help!
    Glen

    Thanks very much Mylenium for your help - I've scoured the file looking for everything you mention, and there anything fancy at all. I'm using no time-stretching or remapping, simply putting a text layer on top of a video, and moving its in and out points. No blurs or odd keyframes as far as I can tell. Video and comp are both 29.97 framerate (comp created using "New comp from selection").

  • Text Frame Options. Room for Side Heads added without warning

    Hi -
    I just got asked this and have no clue how to help. Anyone know what this is?
    Every now and then, my Frame file will –apparently on its own – reset most of its text frames into having room for side heads.  Makes for lots of bad labels on graphics – everything’s suddenly offset and scrolling off the bottom.
    This will happen suddenly.  It will usually be only one or two chapters in a book, but if I ignore it has been known spread like the black death throughout the book.
    The only solution I’ve found so far has been to revert to a backup or touch each text frame individually.  Setting properties for two at a time messes up location on the page.

    HI -
    Here's what I heard back.
    I believe it’s for everything except main text flow, including headers&footers on master pages, and special elements on unused master pages.
    It appears to be spontaneous, but I can’t guarantee that.
    I don’t use MIFs, and I’m pretty sure no one else does.
    Yes to formatting imports , because we frequently change variables in one chapter and copy them back to the rest (esp date doc was last edited – not same as print date per our regulatory agency.)   Likewise conditional text.  We know not to copy from a file into itself in a book, although it has happened and we do exchange manuals between revisions at times.

  • ID CS3 - text wrap doesn't work at the end of a long multi-columned text frame

    Did a search - don't think this specific issue has been addressed:
    We design large graphics often used on walls. When working with a text frame that that was 11 feet long and had 8 columns, text wrap would not work on an image placed in the last column. The same image with the same text wrap applied will work fine anywhere else in the text frame. I found that if I shortened the width of the text frame a little bit at a time eventually it would work, but there doesn't seem to be a specific cut-off width - sometimes the last column won't text wrap when the frame is 115 inches wide and sometimes it doesn't work when the frame is only 80 inches wide. Again, all of the other columns work fine. I have tried all of the obvious stuff, the only variable between the columns that wrap and the one that doesn't is it's position at the end of the text frame.
    We have gotten around this issue by using multiple threaded frames instead of one long frame with multiple columns, but I am curious if anyone else has run into this or might know what the issue is.
    thanks

  • How to link text frames in Pages 5.2?

    How to link text frames in Pages 5.2?

    The correct term in Pages is Text Boxes, and true linking is not implemented in v5.2. You can Unite, Intersect, Subtract, and Exclude multiple Text Boxes via the Arrange panel. These attributes only appear when two or more Text Boxes are selected. Also, on the Arrange menu, you will need Object Placement set to Move with Text, and the Text Wrap set to None for more accurate positioning.
    In the following example, there was initially a Text Box with overflowing text that was duplicated. With both Text Boxes selected and aligned, I could then use the Unite feature from the Arrange panel. This allowed the text to flow into the second box. Selecting text in one box and dragging upwards continues the text selection between both boxes. Hoefler italic applied in one box is applied to both. Appropriately placed, another trip to the Arrange panel to enable Text Wrap around and text fit adjustments.

  • Text disappearing from CS4 text frame.

    I work in a studio environment with multiple computers/users sharing files from the same server. Occassionally when I (or another user) opens an InDesign CS4 file there will be text missing from one or more text frames. The frame is still there, but it is empty. If I close the file without saving and then re-open it, the text may re-appear in that frame, but text may be missing from a different frame, or no text will be missing at all – seemingly a completely random occurrance. We have tried to resolve whether this happens with missing/conflicting fonts, but there seems to be no correlation. The problem is not repeatable, but happens at least once a month. We cannot narrow down any ther common denominators within the files.
    We run Mac Pros and iMacs, OS X 10.5.8 or later, InDesign Creative Suite 4, Suitcase Fusion 2 and we are running a Windows Server (sorry, no other details on that).
    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the advice, folks.
    I have hidden text enabled and there is nothing in the frame. These are standalone frames – not linked to any other frames, so it wouldn’t seem to be a re-flow issue. My gut is telling me that it’s font-related, as we have MANY font conflicts between computers, however the issue sometimes occurs without the “Missing Fonts” alert appearing upon opening.
    Suitcase Fusion 2… Unfortunately that may be the culprit. Yet another reason to not like that product, unfortunately. I will research that line of reasoning and report back.

  • Adding a Text Frame to an Existing Group

    I have belatedly discovered another difference between CS4 and CS2 -- I don't know whether this started with CS3 or not; I think perhaps it did.
    When you want to add a text frame to an existing group (which means create a new one within group), it's fairly straightforward unless the group is inline to a story. Then the new item gets added at the wrong place (I suspect what actually happens is that it always used to get added at the wrong place and then moved to the specified coordinates; but in CS2 and earlier, there was no automatic updating of the screen so the coordinates worked, but in CS4, the addition of the new frame moves the inline and so the coordinates you're aiming for are no longer correct). I worked around this in the following script by changing the anchoring and then changing it back -- I'm not entirely sure that this is foolproof, but it works on the job we're using it for.
    //DESCRIPTION: Add New TF to Parent Group of Selected TF
    (function() {
         if (app.documents.length > 0 &&
                   app.selection.length === 1 &&
                   app.selection[0].parent instanceof Group &&
                   app.selection[0] instanceof TextFrame) {
         var group = app.selection[0].parent;
         if (group.parent instanceof Character) {
              // we have an anchored group. Make sure it is custom while processing
              var origAncState = group.anchoredObjectSettings.anchoredPosition;
              group.anchoredObjectSettings.anchoredPosition = AnchorPosition.anchored;
         var bounds = app.selection[0].geometricBounds;
         var newTF = group.textFrames.add({geometricBounds:bounds});
         newTF.move(undefined, [0, -1]); // offset a pica -- or whatever the units are
         if (origAncState !== undefined) {
              group.anchoredObjectSettings.anchoredPosition = origAncState;
         app.select(newTF);
         } else {
              alert("Please select a text frame in a group.");

    Open the PDF in Acrobat (not Reader).
    Use the "Draw Rectangle" tool (Comment :: Drawing Markups)
    Go into the Rectangle Properties to configure appearance for border line style, thickness and color; fill color and opacity.

  • Best SEO practices for text frames in content areas

    Hello,
    Is it best practice for SEO to keep all text (H1, H2, H3 <p> etc.) on a web page in one text frame and adjust with spacing between paragraphs to add additional elements (Video, widgets etc.) or is it better to use separate text boxes and place elements between them?
    Thanks! Below is an example. Should the H1 and both paragraphs be in one text frame space out to fit video or two separate text frames with the video between them?
    What is Lorem Ipsum?
    Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

    In the example you give, I would put both sets of text in a single box with a blank spacer between them for the video which would then be layered over the top to appear in the middle.
    The video takes longer to download and may also be blocked by the users settings so having it separate allows my text to load (and appear) quickly even if the video encounters issues.
    I would only separate the two text sections if they are clearly different in style or content and that’s really only helpful if you want a phone and/ or tablet version of your pages… it makes your life easier then to have the text in separate containers when you want to sync them across the different layouts.

  • How can a 2 column text frame be split into 2 separate text frames?

    Hi InDesigners,
    I have a 12 spread (22 page) document that was originally created with a single column primary text frame in CS6. It contains text and anchored images throughout the doc. (images are anchored to the text frame).
    My client now wants each page split into 2 columns, but the columns need to have different widths - the left column needs to be narrower than the right. Although I can create 2 columns in a single frame, it's not possible to adjust the column widths separately, so I need to get them into 2 separate frames.
    Is there a way to convert a 2 column text frame into 2 separate text frames, so I can resize the column widths invididually?
    kind regards,
    -c

    hi, Thanks for the replies,
    The doc size is 8.5"x11", with 1/2 " margins. I never mentioned anything about it being a book. (It's just a paper my client wrote and woud like a PDF of it). The reason for the uneven columns is he wants the images to be 4" wide. For some reason, he wasn't keen on just a single column with text wrapped around the pix. I proposed making a 3" left column threaded into a 4" right col with a .5" gutter between them and he wants it that way.
    Thank you both for your respones. I'll try the script

  • Inconsistent placement of anchored text frame in data merge document

    Just writing up this bug so that anyone else who encounters it can find out what's going on with less head-scratching.
    It seems that InDesign's data merge feature gets confused when there are anchored objects in a text frame that's anchored inside another text frame, which can result in:
    exported PDFs that don't match the InDesign preview when viewed in Acrobat (so, nasty surprises on some pages after exporting)
    InDesign previews that - bizarrely - show differently depending on whether you navigated to the preview by hitting the arrow keys in the Data Merge box or by entering a number.
    (sadly I can't provide a file for confidentiality reasons - but the problem point had multi-line data merge entries, a text frame that was anchored in another text frame of equal width, and anchored images and text frames in this anchored text frame)
    There were certain entires where, if I navigate to them in the preview using the 'next' and 'previous' keys, there was 4mm less space between the nested text frame and the previous line than if I navigate to it by entering the number. Exporting as a PDF through data merge used the variant with more space.
    Re-working the area in question so that the nested text frame wasn't needed seems to have removed the problem (but loses the ability to vertically align these elements in a fixed size frame that is in the text flow).

    You didn't say what version of ID, or whter a single or multiple record per page merge, but the Preview is known to be buggy for multiple records since CS5 and might be for single records as well.
    I have an annual directory that is built by data merge with one section in each listing as an anchored frame, and I've never had a problem, but it's not as complex as your description, nor do I ever merge to PDF (though I've heard here from several users that it's more reliable).
    One thing you might want to try is merging without the preview step, but do it from a "fresh" file by copying and pasting your placeholders into a new document. If the problem is with the preview it seems that it "infects" the file and even merging without touching the preview button may not work.

  • Multi-state scrollable text frames

    I've created a multi-state object with 5 different articles the problem I seem to be having is after scrolling half way down on one and switching to another it remains half way down the scrollable frame. Is there a way to have it return to the top of each state when switching between the states ?

    Sorry for the misplacement,
    I'm making a portfolio and have 5 separate projects to display, I was hoping to display them on one page with 5 separate buttons allowing the viewer to switch between them seamlessly than to have them on 5 separate pages.
    I've got the desired effect thus far using 5 scrollable text frames combined into one multi-state object but switching between states keeps it relative to where the person was in the last state. Due to some articles being smaller vertically than others this can be a problem as it shows up blank which will probably create an impression of the information being non existent or the program not working.
    I would appreciate any help on resetting the state to the upper left between changes and not just on the initial opening, or any alternative methods that would create the desired effect.

  • Spry Menu Bar (horizontal) - Problems with uneveness (height variance) between adjacent items

    Hello:
    Like many I will confess that I am new to the spry experience and attempting to catch up.  I am trying to design a horizontal menu bar that employs a background image (repeating GIF gradient bar repeated along the the x-access) to create a beveled/rounded edge effect.  I have another with a different hue that is used on focus and mouse over, etc.  While this works well with the drop downs, there appears to be a "boxiness" between adjacent top level menu items and they appear to have slightly different height.  This seems to be determined by the text forms the content of any link or menu item.  In effect it creates other differences in appearance as the outer most (top and bottom edges) of the GIF appear to be cut off from one menu item to the next.  This leaves a very undesirable look to the page as it juts up and then falls back as it the top level item moves across the web page.
    The other point I should make is that this problem, although it exists in all browsers to some extent, is most pronounced in IE6 and below.  Unfortunately many of the anticipated visitors to this site are forced by their IT department to use IE6.
    My question is:  can you set a variable that overrides or determines the height of the background of the menu items?  Alternatively is there some other way of addressing the problem so that I can get a uniform look as the menu items transition to each other.
    Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
    Steve.

  • How to copy a table from one text frame to another...

    Is there a way to copy a table from one text frame to another? I'm using JavaScript. The following will move a table from one text frame to another, but I need to copy.
    var srcFrame = document.textFrames.item("section-template");
    var dstFrame = document.textFrames.item("test");
    srcFrame.characters[0].move(LocationOptions.before, dstFrame.insertionPoints[0]);

    Hi Bhupinder,
    According to your description, you want to copy a table with Primary keys from one database to another database.
    As per my understanding, I think the best method is use Transfer SQL Server Objects Task in SQL Server Integration Services. The Transfer SQL Server Objects task transfers one or more types of objects in a SQL Server database between instances of SQL Server.
    Server roles, roles, and users from the specified database can be copied, as well as the permissions for the transferred objects. Indexes, Triggers, Full-text indexes, Primary keys, Foreign keys can also be copied.
    To use the Transfer SQL Server Objects Task, we should create a SQL Server Integration Services Project in SQL Server Data Tools, then drag a Transfer SQL Server Objects Task to Control Flow pane. Specify SourceConnection, SourceDatabase, DestinationConnection
    and DestinationDatabase for the Connection, select the table in the ObjectsToCopy category, then change CopyPrimaryKeys to True and the other corresponding properties in the task.

  • Auto create threaded text frames

    Pardon me if this solution has already been covered.
    I am seeking a solution for auto creating several text frames on a single page. I have an excel/text file which contains the item numbers and prices, there are approximately 50-100 items per page. I would like to use data merge or some resource to import the file while placing each field in its own text frame for repositioning according to images. I played around with the data merge but it created 150 pages each with one text frame.
    Thanks for any ideas.

    If it can be done with InDesign, then almost without exception, it can be scripted. The exceptions are few and far between: off the top of my head, a script can't control the preference to allow attached scripts -- the preference would be pointless if it could.
    There are also things that can be done in a script that can't be done (as opposed to "would be very onerous to do") in the UI. For example, see this:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/easily-add-captions-to-graphics-frames.php
    For more info, check out the InDesign Scripting page on Adobe.com. You might also look at my blog here:
