Hairline Outlines in Illustrator

How do I create a Hairline outline in ai? I am printing to a laser that only accepts colour as raster to engrave and a hairline RGB Red as vector to cut along. The 0.1mm stroke does not work.

Doug,
A true hairline always prints and displays as the thinest width that the output device can render. I use them all the time in programs which properly provide them.
In FreeHand, I have always set my default working style to black hairline, no fill. This lets me draw paths accurately at any zoom without ever having the path display become fat and bulky. (Yes, in actual preview mode--no one needs to trot out Illustrator's hideous "outline mode," which is merely an archaic workaround for this omission and other basic shortcomings of Illustrator.)
Working this way is also advantageous for paths drawn as temporary construction aids. That is, they always display as the thinnest path possible on screen, but without having to be converted to pathGuides.
In FreeHand, I've always drawn my custom printer marks (crops/folds) in the bleed area as hairlines, and also use hairlines for die cut outlines.
In short, hairlines by their nature are advantageous anytime you want to draw, construct, and convey things with a working feel and visual display of maximum accuracy.
Merely setting very thin strokes is an unsatisfying workaround for this hugely practical feature. True hairline stroke settings should be standard fare in any decent drawing program.

  • How do I create an outline in illustrator?

    Hello All,
I am trying to create artwork for printing and I have been asked to save the document as an eps file.
    This is the file:
I need the sbsgroup to be an outline and be transparent in the middle...how do I remove the blue from the background?
I'm quite new to illustrator, haven't used it a lot, so would appreciate any tips please.

    BID,
Here is a screenshot, first the outlined letter S partially above the background, then with a copy and the original turned black underneath, then placed over the middle of the background rectangle, then the Opacity Mask mad after selecting the blackened original and the background rectangle.

  • Outline Tool-Illustrator CS6

Whenever I apply the Outline Tool (CTL+Y) while tracing over an image in Illustrator CS6, the image over which I am tracing with the Blob Tool is not visible. Turning off the Outline Tool brings it back.  What am I turning off to prevent viewing the layer below that I am tracing over. (I've tried applying reduced opacity without any success)
    Thanks, Reconman

Double click on the thumbnail of the layer with your raster image in it and select "template" in the dialogue box.
Then make a new layer to do your tracing in.

  • Can I use Type -- 'convert to outline' in Illustrator on Typekit fonts I've 'designated for desktop use'? I've not been able to as of yet.

I'm trying to print vinyl letters for a gallery I'm a member of and love the Cronos Pro regular font. i've designated this for desktop use and created 24 name files at 200pt. The person working with the vinyl asked if I could 'convert to outline' possibly to make the font a bit larger, I don't really know. When I tried to do this, I found that choice grayed out on the type menu. I am wondering if this means the Typekit fonts 'designated for desktop use' simply do not have the permission to be 'converted to outline'.

Cutting always requires proper paths/ outlines. This has nothing to do with the font or large format printing per se. Beyond that there should be no limitation in using fonts - as long as you can mangle them in AI, it means that somewhere those outlines exist internal to the program so the type can actually be rendered. Whatever prevents this may more likely be inherent in how you treat your text. you would have to provide more specific info on that. Either way, ask in the AI forum for more detailed answers.

  • Hi all, need my logo on Illustrator to be altered so its ready to cut on a vinyl plotter

Hi all, need my logo on Illustrator to be altered so its ready to cut on a vinyl plotter.
Logo is currently on Illustrator and im looking to remove lines etc (hoping you can help me with what to remove) then to copy over to my Dr Stika Program and then cut on my roland stika sx-15.
    Many thanks

That’s a start. Show us the outline view as well.Essentially, you want your outline view to look like hairline outlines around all the black areas. Anything that’s white should be a lack of artwork, rather than white artwork. A better way to work is with the transparency grid showing so you can see where you need to get rid of white.
You want: No strokes. Nothing white anywhere. Anyplace shapes overlap you want the shapes merged into one shape, like below.

  • CS3 Illustrator crashing in OS 10.6.8

I have a mini, borrowing from another iMac, their CS3 Illustrator. The application starts up okay. It will crash If I try to open a document. If I drag a file to the dock icon, the document will open up in Illustrator. However, after doing changes, I am unable to save it. I try to go to File Save, Save As, Save A Copy, and no pop up window will appear. I tried to repeat this same process on another mac mini with the same operating system ver. 10.6.8. It ran smoothly with no problems. I ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions and the disk. After these were completed, I tried to repeat this again in CS3 Illustrator but ended up crashing again.

I was just planning to use Illustrator for this one time with this mini. We have 5 iMacs with CS4 Creative Suite installed (fully paid licenses) in our department. In the past, to help with productivity, this mini had to open up artwork, in order to change text to outline in Illustrator. We were able to use an iMacs previous CS3 Illustrator to do this. This mini only borrows maybe twice in a year for a period of 5 minutes the most.

  • How to: Mathematical Equations in Illustrator CS3 +

One feature that doesn't exist in Illustrator (or I haven't find it yet!), is a way to add Mathematical equations into illustrations. Having search the internet there are a few plugins that allow that to some extend. Personally I found one another way to do it, combining Illustrator, Photoshop, (Acrobat - not necessarily) and the Free OpenOffice Math tool.
If you are interested, or if you ever need this, you can refer to this guide:
    http://xvp.gr/tutorials/illustrator_math_eqs/
The basic idea is to export in vector-PDF file, the math equations that you have develop with any program (i.e. MSOffice, or OpenOffice(which I prefer)). Then you can raster the equation in high resolution through photoshop (from the vector-PDF file), and trace it to perfect outlines via illustrator.
Btw. OpenOffice Math tool, is an open source tool, that Adobe can utilize thus to make automatical this procedure in it's next suite. Simple and easy without having to mess with complicated implementations... :)

I use MathType to make equations for years.
And it works fine with all Adobe (and NOT only Adobe!) software.

  • Bringing in illustrator files into Indesign

but when you do a print its clear that is not the case here after bringing in the file created to outlines from illustrator it seems to be stroked thicker as seen on the screen on printed on paper ?? what am i doing wrong ?
i just converted artwork to outlines then dragged and dropped it in Indesign is this wrong? should i export it as an eps?

  • Optimising illustrations - drawn on coloured paper

In my job I'm often required to work with scanned illustrations and optimise them for print.
But my latest job has been printed on coloured paper! Argh! It's an original, like the Illustrations were drawn right onto the book and then the pages laminated. It's a nightmare. I've tried messing around with the colour balance, and (god forbid) the Hue/Saturation sliders, but with no luck. If I manage to neutralise one part of the illustration, the rest is still out of whack (too green for example). There are dozens of pages for me to fix and I think it would be much too tedious to trace them in Illustrator or even to manually fix the colour balance of separate sections of each illustration. They are rough illustrations with black outlines but dark coloured fills. So Photoshop's threshold feature doesn't work well, and the Live Trace feature of Illustrator would fail miserably too.
Does anyone know an easier way around this? Possibly more automated than manually tracing and filling the illustrations?

Thanks Peter. I tried all of the suggested techniques, and your curves technique helped the most. It made the outlines of the illustration clearer at least. But even after some fiddling around, I think the only way I can get rid of the paper colour is to try and trace the outlines in Illustrator, then use fill paths to manually colour the illustration.
I'm not sure if I was following Mylenium's instructions correctly but I made 3 layers, one with the original scan, an inverted copy of the original with screen blending mode applied and another copy on top of that with overlay blending mode applied. That made it look washed out though...

  • Font Licensing for Use on Print Media and Web

    Hi,
I currently have a subscription to the Creative Cloud service, with the Student/Teacher Edition discount. I just have a few questions, regarding my legal use of Adobe fonts, such as Myriad Pro.
    1) Will I be able to use this font on print media, such as the box, for a commercial product? What about a printed logo on a commercial product itself?
    2) Will I be able to use this logo legally to creative a logo for a commercial business, but not preserve the font itself (i.e. create outlines in Illustrator, use a png image file, etc.)?
    3) If I am using the Typekit service provided to me via Creative Cloud, what are the restrictions I have in terms of monthly/yearly webpage visits and the number of fonts I am allowed to use?
    4) If I was to let my Creative Cloud subscription expire, would I still be allowed to continue to use the designs I created using the Adobe fonts in the time that I was subscribed to the service? I.e. I made a logo using Myriad Pro today, but let my subscription expire. Would I be allowed to continue to use my logo after my subscription has expired?
    5) If I were to make an iOS/Android application for revenue on their respective App Stores, what kind of licensing would I need in order to use the Adobe fonts?
Thanks for clearing any confusion. I tried reading through a few EULAs, but all I seemed to get were headaches.
    Sincerely,
    Jonathan

    Hi Jonathan,
if you stop your cloud subscription the included typekit subscription ends, too. Therefore websites that use typekit fonts won't display them anymore. (Text will be displayed with your fall back font or your browsers default font.) To keep your websites working as you intended you need to keep paying for a typekit subscription.

    To answer your question 3:
Cloud includes a typekit Portfolio subscription. So the page view limitations of the portfolio subscription apply.

I haven't found out about the usage of desktop fonts, after you end your subscription. I doubt that Adobe allows to use the fonts when the subscription is cancelled.

  • Program error

I'm trying to open a photo to edit and I get the response, "can't open file due to a program error"  I get this response with any photo I try and open.  I am running Mac Os Lion.  I purchased elements 10,  3 weeks ago and it worked fine when I used it the last time about 2 weeks ago.
    Any solutions?

    Hi Arianna,
The simplest way to do what you're after is to Export the Illustrator file as an 'Illustrator EPS', then just open the EPS using Photoshop. It may help if you 'Select All' and 'Create Outlines' in Illustrator first.
As to the colour variation, it will differ from application to application unless you give the image a specific colour Profile. The Adobe suite ie: Adobe CS, allows you to give Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop all the same colour profile, so in theory the colour should remain consistant throughout the applications.
    Hope this helps.

  • InDesign CS6: crashes when printing or making pdfs. Going mad! Help?

Similar to another recent post, I'm working on a new MacBook Pro, with new CS6 software. No matter what I try, it crashes instantly when I go to print or make a pdf. Is it a font problem? Mine were managed at first by FontBook and now by Extensis Suitcase 4, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. How have others gotten around this problem? (I'm in a lucky position in that there are no old fonts or old bits of software on the machine -- but it's still crashing! Arrgh!) Thanks if any ideas.

I was having this problem too, and it ended up being a font issue in an old graphic (converted the font to outlines in illustrator and then saved as .eps, unchecking the "embed fonts" checkbox). But now my coworker (who just upgraded to CS6) is having the same problem, and her image doesn't have any fonts in it. We are using PCs.
    No resolution here yet.
One thing you might try -
InDesign would also crash when we try to copy the problematic image. So if you aren't sure which image is causing the problem, you can narrow it down by trying to copy each image until InDesign crashes. Then you can look further at that image and see if there are problems with it.
We're still trying to resolve this here, so very interested in any updates.

  • Can an imported object be used as a keynote mask?

If i create a (lets say) star outline in illustrator, is there a way to select it and import an image to it?
    alan

There's a way, but it's not as direct as just copying and pasting. What you'll want to do is export out of Illustrator as an .SVG file, then use svg2key to convert the file to a Keynote presentation.
    You'll find svg2key here.
