Half gray screen when i export from HDV movie file to picture

I have captured video in HDV 1080/50i from my Canon A1 camera (in Final Cut Pro) and it plays back clean in Quicktime Pro (7.5.5) but when I try to export a still as JPEG the bottom half of the picture is mid-grey and the top half has a thin grey grid over it. If I subsequently try to open it in Photoshop it says an "invalid JPEG marker type" is found. Am I missing some codec, or is this a setting somewhere in QT?
please help - thanks!

Besides the monitor not being calibrated or a particular photo-viewer program not using complete color management, it is also possible that what you’re seeing is the difference between one program using DirectX and the video card applying the monitor profile verses the other program doing the monitor profile conversion in software only.
This difference might occur if you’ve modified the gamma of some of the video acceleration modes.  You might check in the video-card control panel (perhaps in Control Panel or perhaps in your system notifications area) to see if anything has changed the gamma from being a straight line, and in general reset things back to their defaults for your video card.
And you haven’t shown us what your monitor profile is actually set to.  Have you done the Windows display calibration process?  This isn’t as good as using a hardware calibrator but it is something to check, and once you’ve done this, switch between the new program and the one you’re currently using to see if anything changes.

Do you have a specific question about video production?
The forums are for individual technical or creative issues that users have with video production. I am sur someone will be able to help you, but and to get a response it is best to ask a specific question.
Is this about a technical problem you have or something about setting up a web site? If its the latter this is the wrong forum.

    Hello,
Ideally you need to boot from the disk as you have no other media advisable. (e.g your hard drive)
Without some form of system disk or restore you wont be able to diagnose the problem with your hard drive.
By using a Mac OS X system disk you can load up the Disk Utilities and repair the hard drive if shown it's available. If it's not available you would need to replace the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS. Without any disk to support you, you are going to struggle.
You can obtain replacement disk, both retail copies or system disk on the Internet.
If you know what version of Mac OS X you had install (I'm guessing that it would have been 10.3, but would recommend 10.4) A retail disk is normally black with a colored 'X' on it, while system disk are always.
Always try and obtain a copy of the system restore disks (Gray) for your iBook
Ebay is another outlet that has genuine system disk for sell, but like any auction site, it's as and when someone is selling them.
The only other thing you could do is take it to a Apple repair agent who could check the hard drive on your behalf. That way you can get confirmation if the problem is the drive or some other fault. They may even help restore the OS for you.
I can't think of anything else to try without some form of disk to help you.
There maybe just one other small thing you could try.
When booting up, firmly rest your palm of your hand on the iBook next to the tracker pad on the left side.
If it works then it's another fault that I'm aware of.

  • IMac stuck at gray screen when booting

Hi - My 2011 iMac with 10.8.2 is stuck on the gray screen when rebooting. I was in Windows 7 bootcamp, and restarted to OS X. I see the screen below, and once the progress bar reaches 100%, the computer shuts off. Every time I reboot, the same problem. I've disconnected everything, except for the standard bluetooth wireless keyboard. I've tried some various boot options, such as holding down Shift while rebooting, as well as command+R, but neither had any impact, it is the same problem over and over. Any tips on what to try next?

If you want to preserve the data on the internal drive(s), you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Retina Mac shows gray screen when waking up: what to do besides loosing work?

    (see also http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/96188/retina-mac-shows-gray-screen-when -waking-up )
This is the first time that my Retina MacBook Pro wakes up from sleep with a gray screen. After about 10-20 seconds, the MacBook falls asleep again.
Some points that might be relevant:
The only difference between power adapter and no power adapter is that with power adapter it does not go to sleep again.
The battery is almost full (I closed the lid last night when it was about 90%)
An external monitor was not attached when sleeping it, so I don't think How to fix a Macbook that does not always draw its internal screen after waking from sleep and having unplugged external display while asleep? applies.
I've run gfxCardStatus, almost always in "force integrated mode" (to conserve battery). And normally it wakes up correctly.
    I run VMware Fusion 4.
All software is up-to-date and fully patched.
I tried to plugin an HDMI monitor and switch displays with Command-Fn-F1 and Command-Fn-F2, but that did not help (it would not switch displays). Before trying to:
reboot (by force a power off),
    reset SMC
    and/or reset PRAM/NVRAM
What options do I have that do not loose my work?
    sleep-wake retina-macbook-pro battery

Those keys do not reinstall OS X. To do that:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
COMMAND-OPTION-P-R keys resets the PRAM. OS X keyboard shortcuts.

Is there a way to control the quality of my pdf file when exporting from a .pse file?
    Hi,
I have 2 pages in all in a .PSE file.
When I try to export it as .PDF, the quality is very poor. I cannot change it to a better quality.
Please advise how I can export the file so that i can have better quality.

Yup, a logo as bitmap takes up more space than the same as a vector -- unless the vector image is bitmap heavy (think Drop Shadow, Outline Glow; these are actually bitmap effects).
Also, check your PDF version. "Older" versions do not support live transparency, the latest do. Then again, you cannot use live transparency if you suspect your viewers may be using Mac OS X, because Apple's own PDF viewer sucks big time.

  • Extract m2v from HDV MOV for BD

    Hi.
I have a bunch of HDV movies that were cut in FCP and exported as self-contained HDV quicktimes that need to get to Blu-ray.
I would love to use the inherent / native MPEG2 files as I am losing quality compressing into mpeg2 via compressor... not to mention the time I could save by not having to re-encode.
Sonic Scenarist clearly doesn't like them as Apple muxed HDV Quicktimes, but I know the m2v is in there somewhere. Is there any software that I could use to extract the elementary m2v stream from the HDV quicktime file?
I tried opening the movies in MPEG Streamclip but the "demux to" options are grayed out...
Thanks in advance for the help!
    best,
    brian

Since my last post, I've worked out a slightly better way of addressing the issue of getting FCP HDV .mov files into a Blu-ray playable form. It adds a step, using MPEG Streamclip, but can use Toast 9 for authoring, which means simple menus.
    *Video Component*
    HDV .mov file --> YAMB - +extract raw+
    .hdv2* file --> Womble Video Wizard DVD - +Tools -> MPEG format converter -> MPEG-2 Transport Stream+
    .m2t file --> MPEG Streamclip - +Open Files -> Convert to TS -> Convert to TS+
    .ts file
    *Audio Component*
    HDV .mov file --> Compressor - +AC3 output only+
    .ac3 file
    *Combine Audio and Video*
    .ts file + .ac3 file --> tsMuxeR GUI - +M2TS Muxing+
    .m2ts file
    *Author and Burn Blu-ray*
Add .m2ts files to Toast 9 + HD Plugin
Burn DVD, DVD-DL, BD, or BD-DL with no-encoding, just multiplexing
    Play
    http://mymoments.roxio.com/enu/articles/mac/video/2008/05/burna_highdef_dvd_with_toast9.html
    Notes:
I noticed if some tools are used in the wrong sequence, the field order gets screwed up.
From my observations, Toast 9 doesn't know that HDV .mov actually has MPEG-2 video, so it re-encodes for Blu-ray. If you try .m2t files from direct capture outside of FCP, Toast 9 recognizes the streams, and does not require re-encode. The same is true for the files generated in the above flow.

  • "Rough" GIF export from ActionScript 3 files impossible?

    Hello,
I just upgraded from Flash CS3 to Flash CS5, and I've been playing with the various new features. However, I've just encountered an odd problem that I can't seem to find a solution to.
In the past, I've made animated GIFs in CS3 by exporting them with the "Smooth" box unchecked. This was really convenient for me because not only could I export crisp pixel bitmaps from Flash, but I could edit it in another program later. I was planning on making some GIF animations via this process with the aid of the bone tool in CS4 and 5.
When I tried exporting frames of of a figure created with the bone tool in CS5, however, I got images that were fuzzy and often had distorted colors. After some time, I realized that this was because in CS3, I had exported the images from ActionScript 2 files, while the bone tool only works in ActionScript 3 files.
Is it not possible to export "rough" GIFs from ActionScript 3 files, or is there a trick to doing that that I'm somehow missing?

I'm sorry for not making it clear in my initial post, but it doesn't matter whether I create an image using the bone tool or not -- any GIF image exported from an AS3 file always has an antialiased appearance, even when the Smooth box is unchecked.
To show you what I mean, here's a simple GIF image I exported from an AS2 file:
Notice that all of the lines are simple and pixellated, with no antialiasing at all. This is the kind of GIF I want to export from an AS3 file.
Now here's the exact same image I exported from an AS3 file, with the exact same export settings:
As you can see, all of the lines look smoothed, even though I made sure the Smooth box was unchecked.
Is there anything I can do to correct this problem?

Some snaps show up as black screens when I try to view them as single pictures.Even when I run them in slideshows they show up as black screens. These are jpeg files. How can I avoid this happening?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Why do I get only a black screen when I try to download PDF files?

Why do I get only a black screen when I try to download PDF files?  I have the latest version of Adobe Reader.
This problem just started a few weeks ago.
I am still using Snow Leopard.
I have tried using Firefox instead of Safari, but still get the black screen.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
