Half my Powerbook G4 Display Just Went Out!

My promblems started in June when I got one vertical line. In July I got another.
Now, Half my screen just went blank. No vertical lines. Nothing. Just several fat pink lines in the middle (about 2 inches across) and the rest of my screen is white!
My 17" screen has now been converted into a 8" screen! When will this end? When will Apple do something about this?

I hope you're right, but I'm not optimistic. It's hard to imagine that any amount of jostling of the outside of the Powerbook could disturb the display cable inside the hinge without causing visible external damage, but it's not hard to imagine heavy pressure on the display while in transit damaging the LCD panel. I gather that the Powerbook wasn't well packaged on the plane, and may even have been in a piece of checked luggage. That would certainly be a recipe for disaster.
The "bizarre proprietary screws" used in Powerbooks aren't proprietary at all. They're standard Torx screws, and any good hardware store should have drivers to fit them. You'll need a Torx T-8 and, if you get into the interior of the machine, there are some Torx T-6 screws as well as Phillips #0 screws in there. You're right to wait until you can get the appropriate drivers, though — the screw heads are quite soft and easily stripped if you use the wrong size or kind of screwdriver in them.

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...

  • Help - DVD/CD just went out!

This afternoon my DVD drive stopped loading/mounting cds/dvds. It took them in then just moved them in and out of the slot back and fourth.
I did the PRAM and it made it worse, now the DVD/CD's can't even go into the slot.
Any ideas on what's going on?
This came on suddenly with no warning or symptoms.
Thanks in adance for any help.

Well, it was toast. Have know idea why it went bad.
A local Mac repair shop replaced it with an upgraded 8x mce drive with mac drivers for $145 plus $75 labor in 4 hours.
Apple wanted waaay more time and like $700 for their drive. NOT.
So, for a tad over $200 I ended up with a nice upgrade and no hassles. Though it would have been nice if it hadn't just quit after very, very little use during the time I've owned the computer.

  • My startup disk just went out in a puff of smoke...

I just (accidentally) dragged the first volume (which is my startup volume) of my FW HDD from the sidebar of a Finder window onto the desktop, where it disappeared in a puff of smoke. Everything is still running smoothly, but is there anything I can do to make it appear again (in Finder windows) with restarting, and is there anything potentially serious I should be concerned about? (Will that volume appear as usual when I restart?)
I just want to be sure everything's gonna be OK!

Went to Go->Computer, and dragged it back to the sidebar. All's well!

  • My Nano's screen Just Went Out

And I've had it for 17 days. I treated it very nicely, and now the screen just wont turn on. iTunes wont recognize the nano, but my computer will acknowledge that it's plugged in. I can't seem to get it to play any songs, but it's kind of impossible when you dont even know if it's on or not. Anyway, I'm hoping to get a refund. This is unfair.

    check for "hold" button
if it doesn't work, just exchange it, you have 1 year warranty, and there is a plus YOU'll GET BRAND NEW iPOD without scratches if you have any.

  • Macbook pro powercord recall free replacement it just went out

Power cord not working was there ever a recall

If there was, it would be on Apple's website and/or Knowledge Base.  Did you search at those places?
If you have AppleCare, give them a call and let them deal with it.  If not, take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP.  Let them properly diagnose the problem and provide you w/a repair estimate and/or check out the following:  CLICKY CLICK------> Troubleshooting MagSafe Adapters

  • My backlight just went out -- LED? -- why and what to do?

Isn't the backlight in my 2009 13" Macbook Pro an LED?
Any advice on anything to try, and where to take it?  Price of repair??
    Thanks!
    SH

You can take your computer in for repair to any Apple Store or an AASP.  As for the cost of repairs, ask the repair shop for an estimate.  No one here can tell you how much it will cost because none of us has examined your computer, know what is wrong with it not know the taxes and labor costs in your country, city, state, etc.

  • Panic! My G5 just died (fuse went out at my office and now it wount start)

A fuse just went out in my office so all the power went out including the power to my G5!
Now when the power is back on the G5 refuses to start, when I push the on button I just here a clicking sound and then nothing and the light by the button goes on as long as i push the button.
Is my G5 toast or is there a fuse in the computer that has been blown?

Well - you could try a PMU/SMU reset. Can't remember if your G5 has a PMU button - but the process in detail and a few more suggestions here

  • IMac 24" display suddenly went off, it's not working anymore!

    Hi,
I was working on my iMac then left it for a while, came back to see the display is all off.
I've restarted the machine, there is sound and I can hear the notifications and volume sounds, but the display is still black.
I've tried unplugging it and other cords, resetting whatever I could....nothing!
is this a common problem? how can it be resolved?
    Thanks!

Sounds like either the display or the display backlight went out. Unless it's under an extended warranty, it's probably not worth repairing. If you have an adapter for an external display, you can continue on using it that way, but otherwise probably time to be looking for a new system.

  • Powerbook display went out, Help!

I was just using Safari, and seemingly out of nowhere, I heard a loud whirring (I think from the optical drive) and then the display went black--mostly, I can still sort of make out the menu bar and dock. I've had this happen once before, but that time it was because the power cord came unplugged. That is not the case this time--the power cord is plugged in and the indicator is lit green, meaning it is fully powered. Hitting the power button brought the display back to life for fifteen or twenty seconds, but then it went out again. I tried restarting, no help. My external monitor is working fine however.
Powerbook G4, 1.5 ghz, 12". Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know exactly what you've done so far, but I'll start from scratch.
    1. First (and I suspect you've already done this), go  to System Preferences/Displays, and choose 1920 x 1200 resolution. You can pick another resolution later, but let's start at the max and move down later, if you choose.
    2. If you cannot change your screen resoution, please enclose some more detailed info, i.e., what happened when you tried to go to different resolutions. Did it stay the same size? Get any error messages?
Oh, and leave your responses here, so others can give their input!

    mhdmd53 -
usb to usb does not work nor does the tornado device - that is - so far - just pc to pc.

FireWire between the two (get appropriate 800-800 or 400-800), Target Disk Mode on the old one, appears as an external disk on the new one. Drag everything over, or use Setup Assistant if first start of new one, or plain old Migration Assistant. You really don't need a display to see a prancing FireWire icon, do you?

(with the added advantage that since you ain't booting anything off the drive, can turn the Mac on or off at will without risking data corruption on the drive)

  • ZenV Plus display went out how to get new firmwa

OK my mp3 player is just a little over 3 months old and the display went out. It started getting lighter and lighter and now you can not see it at all. I tried resetting it to no avail so after reading the forum I thought I should try to reload the firmware. How? Remember I can not see anything on the display so that will make it a little more difficult I am sure. Thank you for any advice or help.

i dont know if the screen of your zen v+ still work.but sometimes it doesn't display anything when the unit crash.just reset it and it can work again.so u can try it like that if the screen can work.hold the play botton and boot?the unit at the same time.if the screen can work,it will display the interface ofrecovery model .if not, although your unit can work, you cant operate the unit without viewing interface.
