Half of data plan used by Motorola app

Can anyone tell me what "com.motorola.android.omadrm" is, and why it has used 527.4 MB of data when I have had this brand new phone (and brand new line of service) turned on for approximately 24 hours?
I am on a 1GB plan, and some Motorola application has used half of my plan in less than a day. I am not pleased.
Here are two screenshots. One is from Net Monitor application and the other from My Verizon:

You are right! For some reason the OS needed to be updated yesterday and my wife ran the update.
When we got our new phones we picked which phone number we each wanted, and ended up mixing up the boxes. So she turned on my phone and updated it, and I had no idea because at the time I had her phone.
Just as a helpful tip, I went into Settings | About phone | System updates
In that menu you can see "Last System Update Information" which for me had a "Time" of "Thursday, November 21, 2013 9:43 AM"

  • Data plan used if MiFi connected but not actively being used?

If computer is on overnight but not in use, meaning MiFi connected, with that use up my data plan? Or does it use up with "active" use only? I'm sharing internet with other people so I'm not sure my data plan is being used on purpose or just getting eaten up while we are all asleep? I'm already maxed with 3 weeks to go!!!

As long as you have devices connected to the MiFi there is always a risk that those devices will consume data behind the scenes without your knowledge.  This is how network connected devices work, they are constantly "in use" while connected.  Computers, smart phones and any kind of internet connected devices are constantly backing up content, looking for updates and talking to other network devices.  It has nothing to do with your active participation and all internet communication is held against you on your data plan.
The only way to completely stop data usage is to turn off your MiFi when it is not needed.  This is a common safe practice that you should start using when on a metered data plan.  MiFis are not intended to be left on 24x7 anyways, frequent reboots will help ensure the device stays in proper working order and increase the longevity of its life.
Verizon does provide everyone with a data log.  The data log will provide you with time stamps and the amounts that are consumed at those times.  It should be easy to see when your biggest spikes of consumption are.  Isolate what devices are online during those times and what may have been going on and you can start to build a picture of where the problem lies.
To truly see the network traffic in terms of specific applications, web services or devices you need to find and install network monitors.  Network monitors come in a variety of applications so you need to find and build a monitoring system that fits your environment.  Considering you have other people connected to your MiFi it would not be uncommon for each of you to install a separate monitor specific to those machines.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • IPad Verizon data plan used up?

After using a new iPad mini on a Verizon data plan for 3 weeks, only 50 MB had been used. Then the device suddenly indicated that all data was used for the month, and refused to connect. A few hours after this, it "fixed itself", connecting, and showing that only 50 MB had been used for the month.
    Is this a common occurrence?

I've never seen this happen on my Verizon iPad. I've been using it since July 2011 on my account.
ID suggest watching your usage though to see if it happens again. If it does I'd contact Verizon.

  • Blackberry Curve 8520 (o2) - No data plan - Using browser purely with wifi?

    I have just got a Blackberry curve 8520. I'm on o2.
I haven't got a plan that includes data, so was wondering how I can use my Blackberry internet over wifi.
Under mobile network settings I've disabled data services, so I don't get charged for data without me knowing.
I've also changed my browser configuration to Hotspot browser, and its found my Wireless network okay and saved.
However when I go on browser, It just keeps coming up with unable to connect to the internet.
    Am I doing anything wrong?

I dont have a data plan (work phone) and can get internet through wifi, and have done so without any issue.
check 'Menu', 'Manage Connections', Wifi is ticked, with network name in Green
check your using Hotspot Browser, (you did say this, I know).  So it definately says Hotspot Browser at the top of the browser when open rather O2 Active (or similar)
I'll keep looking to see if there are any settings I can find which could help

  • Missing EXIF data when using other photo apps besides "Camera"

I have recently been trying to use the EXIF location and camera info information created with images in the iphone 3GS and noticed that the only image files that have the full EXIF data attached when imported to my computer are the images created using the iPhone native Camera app. I have numerous photo apps that take great photos which when downloaded are missing almost all the EXIF data.
What is up? Is apple requiring third part apps to strip the data or somehow blocking them from capturing the EXIF location data for download?
I know many of these apps are using the location data to geotag the images and link to maps.
    Thanks for any info!

Thanks, I posted it there! Actually I have been searching for some site to officially post a bug report to Adobe, but didn't manage to find it myself...

  • HT3529 I have two older iPhones (3g, 3gs) that I've given to my granddaughters. The phones don't have phone service so they're using them like an iPod touch. Can I set up Message on these phones without a phone number for them or data plan?

I have two older iPhones (3g, 3gs) that I've given to my granddaughters. The phones don't have phone service so they're using them like an iPod touch. Can I set up Messages for them on these phones without a phone number or data plan using only Wi-Fi?

Yes you can. Just make sure you have iMesages on. You will need to go into Settings>Messages and turn it on and log in to their Apple IDs. I was having some activation issues when I first got my iPhone 4S [it was the carrier's fault, not the iPhone's] and I was using iMessages with my Apple ID to text my friends who had iPhones. I of course had to be connected to Wi-Fi for it to work. Hope that helps.
You could also have them download a texting app and they could use that on Wi-Fi. There are many free ones out there. I personally enjoy Text Now. Gives you your own phone number so others can text you too, not just iDevices.

  • What data plans work with Blackberry Protect App?

Anybody able to backup? I am trying to backup over WiFi and the app was just released today.... Would love to know what data plans qualify as the app tells me that my wireless plan does not support Backup with BB Protect.
    Thanks!

Thank you SoccerRef for your help. I have reviewed our resources and did not find a requirement for unlimited data. If there is, our resources have not been updated yet. The only requirement listed is having a Blackberry ID for the App World. Try turning off WiFi and use the cellular network to set up the app. Additionally, I found on blackberry's website the app requires a connection to the wireless network.
If you are not on the unlimited data plan and want to reduce your data usage for regularly scheduled backups, in the Options menu you can set it to only backup while on a WiFi network. Here are links I am referencing from Blackberry's Knowledge Base and forum:

  • The new podcast app is using up my data plan

The new "podcast app" is using up my data plan like crazy! Its costing me much much more money now to listen to my podcast. They want donations to keep them "free" but this is much much futher from free. What is going on! I want it to go back to the way it was. Please dont tell me about them being free on WIFI I know that. I dont live in the city so the only WIFI is never where I can get it when I use them. Even driving down the road , if I loose service the podcast stops and my bill is over the top! What can I do to make it stop!!!!!??? This is a very bad move.
Also what is the yellow "other" on my itunes sync thing that show how much of what is using up the space on my phone? I have taken almost everything off of the phone and almost half of the space is the yellow other. I can not wipe my phone and start over I have legal text messages I have to keep for court on my phone.
Im very unhappy with this move of Apples and others are unhappy with it too or havent caught on to it yet.
Please change it or let us know what to do to end this issue.
    thank you
    ami
PS, I will be contacting the the podcasts to let them know that the donations will now be going to pay for the NO LONGER FREE PODCASTS.

This has been really frustrating me too!  I made sure the 'use data' was turned off in settings, and yet when I was listening to a podcast, it went from one that I had downloaded to one that I hadn't downloaded without stopping, so I used up a ton of data!  It was because I was 'subscribed' to that podcast, which meant every darn episode ever was appearing in my list of podcasts - you can set it to download them automatically, but I don't want to download every single podcast for some, and there's no way to easily pick and choose like there used to be (with the 'get more podcasts' button).  In the end, I've just unsubscribed from all my podcasts, and I'll go find them one by one - it's really annoying, but it seems like it's all (downloading every possible episode, which for some is a lot weekly) or downloading manually by going to the catalogue.  I miss the old podcasts.  Also, I don't think it's cooler that it's not merged with my other music anymore.  Why was that necessary?

  • App plan use data plan or iphone 5 have gps unit?

I use the plan app this week and I take road whit out cell service and my plan app
Work correctly. The iphone 5 have gps or it take data plan?

        Hey ccasteel89!
If Serena gets a phone hug then I'm hoping that I can get some love to with the information provided. Right off the bat, $570 is data charges would also have me going into cardiac arrest so I appreciate your concern. From the sound of things, it seems that the representative you worked with filed a billing investigation (and that's exactly what needed to be done). Have you received your call and resolution yet?
In regards to your question, there is one thing I would like to check with your device. Do you have the most up to date iOS 6.1 software? You can check by going to settings > general > software update. This should help a great deal.

  • Used half of 2gb plan in 5 days, mostly in past 2 days at same times

So, my boyfriend has had his Razr for several months now, using half his 2gb data plan at most in a month. We are now 5 days into a new billing cycle and just received notice he has used half already. I looked at his usage, mostly all small usage here and there. He has no apps, doesn't use Facebook or any social media, may check email once every few days. Here is what took place the past 2 days and this was the only data used on these dates, so this will tell you he barely uses anything data related: 8/26 11:15pm 0.17991, 8/27 5:15am 0.10815, 11:15am 0.00169 and 5:15pm 0.08532. I have Facebook, games, 2 emails and I barely use 2gb, but luckily I still have unlimited. I don't know if it's related, but last week his phone went into 3g and wouldn't go back to 4g unless he turned it off. It would be ok for awhile, then go back to 3g. The battery was also dying quickly when this was going on. Then one day it stopped doing this. I can only assume both of these complaints may be update related, but come on. If his data plan is going to be killed by crap he isn't doing himself, it's not fair that we have to pay for more data to cover for it!

  • I can not send email from my iPad .  Have been using it for over a year, all of a sudden I can only receive email.  I have a wifi connection in my home and have a A T &T cellular data plan?

I can not send email from my iPad .  Have been using it for over a year, all of a sudden I can only receive email.  I have a wifi connection in my home and have a A T &T cellular data plan?

I have a 1st gen iPhone that I just updated the software to 2.0.2
Now whenever I press the mail icon it goes to the mail app for about 4 seconds, does nothing, no loading of folders, old messages, nothing.
Then it reverts back to the home screen. Tried restarting, haven't tried restoring, thought I'd look here first.
    Anyone???

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • This isn't a question but rather a warning to anyone using the new OS for iphone 4.  The imessage uses up your data plan like crazy.  I called Apple about it and they said no it's not doing it.  I called AT

The new OS is burning through my data plan like crazy and here's why.  Imessage uses your data plan and not your texting plan.  So every time you send a text message to someone with an iphone it uses imessage and it uses your data, not your text plan.  I couldn't figure out why I was burning through so much of my data plan so quickly.  I called Apple and they said, no it's not the data plan doing it.  I called AT&T and they said, yes, the imessage uses data instead of your texting plan if you are texting to another iphone.  Also, the new OS runs your apps all the time, even when you aren't using them.  So if you are not near wifi your apps are running and burning your data plan.  The AT&T guy took me through the steps to turn off the apps.  You can still use them but they won't be running constantly.  Seriously Apple, you should let people know this.  It does say it in the fine print on the website "data rates may apply" under imessage but most people will never read this.  So my data plan started on October 10th and it's already at 175 megabytes and I only have a 200 megabyte plan.  I've never used more than 50 to 75 megabytes in a month.  Apple get it together and be honest with people and tell them.  Quit denying the problem.  Most people have probably not even discovered this yet.  Wait till you get your bill.

It's not really common knowledge because I've talked to several people today and none of them knew about it.  Also, when I called Apple they said no the new OS is not using data.  Totally wrong answer.  You'd think they'd know about it and at least tell people.  The people who are going to be hit by this are people like me with the 200mb plans.  I just think it's best to spread the word so people can know what's happening.  I still don't know how I went through so much data in such a short period of time.  It's not happening anymore though, not since I fixed everything up last night.
If you are using a free wifi connection, there are no data charges with iMessage.  But in an area where you did NOT have a wifi connection, of course it used 3G and of course you got charged for it (or had it count against your plan limits).
I'll ask again - without a wifi connection, just what did you think was happening?  How did you think your iPhone was able to magically send a message WITHOUT using any data connection?  A little bit of rational thought would have made you realize that there was no way, over a 3G connection (which is a service provided by your cellular service provider, NOT Apple), that you can send or receive ANYTHING without your service provider's plan picking it up.
Nothing abut iMessage has ever hinted that it can, in any way, bypass your service provider when NOT using a wifi connection.

  • App Store is not working in Data plan in iPhone 4s

In my New iPhone 4s App Store is not working in Data plan.Even though i have restarted still the same problem persisits.
And also If I turn off some apps(Settings-->Use Cellulalar data for ) by using Cellular data for those are not working
    Could someone help me.

I didn't have any problems with the Malaysia App Store.
Try this...  install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
    Then restart your Mac.
    Launch the App Store.
Check the round flag icon bottom left corner of the iTunes window to make sure the correct country is selected. If not, click the flag then select Malaysia.
It's ok to install the combo even though you are already running v10.6.8.

  • Does tethering my iPad to my iPhone 4s use more data than using an iPad that has its own data plan?

Does tethering my iPad to my iPhone 4s use more data than using an iPad that has it's own data plan?

No, it won't work.. the Airports are not media devices.. they have no brains .. no media extensions.. and itunes must be running on a computer.
You can however watch movies from storage but not with itunes..
See how people use tools like VLC to get around Apple's built in iTunes limitations.
