Half of RAID not mounting

I have got an Xserve RAID RAID with 250 gig drives. Drives 1-7 RAID 5 connected to one server through a Qlogic SAN box 64 and working as expected. Drives 8-14 RAID 5 connected to another server also through the Qlogic switch. I cannot get 8-14 to mount.
I have rebuilt the parity information, restarted the controller, and even physically connected the RAID to the server with no luck.
I can see the Node World Wide Name of the RAID in System Profiler, but I see nothing in Disk Utility. Nothing appears out of the ordinary in RAID Admin.
I know the fiber connection points are working, as I can mount and work with my SAN (on other RAIDs). Firmware is 1.5.1 on all RAID units.
The only thing I have not tried is physically moving the drives to another unit a that requires taking down the SAN.
I do have all the data backed up on tape, but I don't really want to restore everything that way unless I have to.

Well, after several hours on the phone with Apple Enterprise support, the problem has been solved.
The problem was in fact LUN Masking. As we should all be aware LUN Masking was removed from RAID Admin 1.5.1 (it is still there in 1.5.0). 3 years ago when the Apple SE set up our SAN, he used LUN Masking instead of creating zones in the fibre switch. According to other information I received, this was an OK way to do it at the time.
Solving the problem was a little time-intensive, but it now works.
First I had to download RAID Admin 1.5.0 and install it on one of my clients. Using that, I had to remove LUN Masking from all of my RAIDs. This is where it got a little tricky, as I had to power down all my servers so LUNs did not show up on multiple computers.
Once the LUN Masking was removed, I created a new Fabric on my switch (thanks go to aaron on http://www.xsanity.com/article.php?story=20060312090411100&query=zoning). Then, after turning everything with a fibre port off, I updated the fabric zoning.
When I turned everything back on, not only did I have LUNs in the correct location, but my SAN worked, too!

  • Mirrored RAID not mounting/not showing as RAID (Disk Utility)

I have 2 Lacie Firewire Disks set up as a mirrored RAID (created by Disk Utility). I've been using this setup for about a year with no issues. But today I tried mounting the RAID and I got this msg twice (one for each drive)...
"Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
It then asks if I want to Initialize, Ignore or Eject. If I leave this msg up for a bit it eventually just goes away. But the disks never load.
I opened up Disk Utilities to check and see if the drives were listed and they are, but the RAID is NOT listed. All of the first aid options are greyed out. I tried to mount each disk but they will not mount, I assume because the RAID info has been lost?
Is there a way for me restore the RAID or at least get my info off of the drives? They contain a large photo library that cannot be replaced.
    Powerbook G4 Aluminium 1.33gthz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I never technically fixed the RAID. I used the program Data Rescue mentioned above to look at the drives and pull my data off of them. What I found was one of the drives was in perfect order, and the other drive had stopped recording data MONTHS ago. Basically the RAID became un-paired and stopped working correctly, and only one of the drives was saving the data. It freaked me out at first because the drive I decided to recover first was the one that was missing data. But I then looked at the 2nd drive and it had all my data on it, and I was able to recover it.
Anyway, Data Rescue worked perfectly. Now I just have the drives running independently. But I am staying away from the apple software RAIDs for now, as I did some reading and they seem to not be so trustworthy.
Also, Data Rescue takes quite a bit of time to pull all your data off, especially when you have a couple hundred gigs of data. Hopefully this helps.

  • RAID not mounting

After a reboot the RAID won't mount, i can see the RAID on the xserve Disk utility in grey (not mounted) when i click mount the utility doesn`t nothing. How can i mount it? is possible to mount using other utility?? i verified and repaired the raid, no problem found. Tryed to change the fiber cables and switch them.
    Plz Help

This may be a little too late, but maybe it will help. I'm not sure why this happens. I reinstalled my server, and I could not access the drives, even though they showed up in disk utility (as a blank file).
Here is what I did to fix it:
    1. Open up Disk Utility
    2. Make a disk image of the drive you want to mount, save this somewhere accessible (i saved it on another one of my RAID drives)
    3. Erase the disk, it should then mount and be accessible
    4. Restore the image onto the drive.
    Cheers!

  • Fibrenetix PIXIe RAID not mounting

    Hi !
I have a interesting problem here... The 12 bay Fibrenetix Pixie RAID is not mounting on the new Macpro which has a R380 installed. When I open the ATTO config tool I see the RAID and can get also all information from it, also seeing there all the disks and so on... even when I hook up the HP1840 LTO4 drive over the SAS connection from the card I can see it. But it is not mounting... by the way the mouse is not running smoove. It is jumping, like it wouldn't update the moving continuesly... really strange... when I hook up the RAID to my 2008 MacPro it is mounting immediately... dont know whats wrong... any thoughts ????
    thx a lot
    Rainer

The function "Automap RAID Group into System" at the atto config tool solved the problem...
But the mouse is jumping still.... dont know whats that...

  • Raid not mounting, only mounts after restart

When i restart the MP, the 4tb RAID (2x WD Black Cav.) fail to mount, but show in disc utility.
When I restart, the RAID Shows - Is this a sign they are about to die... I bought them in Oct 2011 - around the same time as the inflated HDD prices due to the Tsunami (so perhaps were bothed in the manufacturing process).
Ive also noticed that when a external usb drive is connected when booting up, it will hang on the blue screen.
    Is any of this normal?
appears one disc isnt mounting in DU
I have since restarted amd made a backup just Incase
    I took a screen grab here - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1422333

If everything seems fine but the RAID is just "not there" the two big places to look are hardware issues or LUN masking. If your fibre cable connections seem fine and the computer is showing the SCSI devices in System Profiler and the Fibre Channel Utility sees the ports then look to LUN masking. You'll need to run version 1.5 of the RAID admin tool (it was removed in v1.5.1) and make sure LUN masking isn't checked 'on'.
    Good luck,

  • External RAID not mounting

    Hi,
I am using an external RAID drive (with eSATA connections) and have found that it won't mount on my desktop. There isn't a deathly clicking associated with it failing, so I'm wondering why it won't mount.
In DISK UTILITY, it finally shows up in the list of drives, but I can't do anything with it.
Any suggestions to help get this back online. It's my archive back up drive, so very important.
    Thanks
Using a MAC PRO with 10.6.4

I have run the Disk Warrior repair disk and the RAID drive returned to the desktop. I repaired the Permissions of my main HD, and corrected a number of errors. There seemed to be problems with the structure of the RAID drive but Disk Warrior managed to fix them.
Now I find I have a kernel panic. It ONLY happens when I click on this RAID drive. The screen darkens and an official dialog box scrolls down. Somewhat like this (link below)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392?viewlocale=en_US
Any suggestions now, since I cannot click on the drive without a Kernel panic occuring.
    Update to 10.6.5??

  • Xraid not mounting

I have read some thread about this issue, but not real answer, so I would like to ask again if anyone has an answer for the raid not mounting. Every light are green on the raid, installed the new admin 1.5.1. everything look great nice and green, but the raid does not mount, actually the raid appears after an hour or 2 after booting and I can play the media store on the raid fine, but additionally to the mounting problem, I cannot write anything to the drive. I check the permission, it says read only, but everything is greyed out and I cannot change it to read and write.
    I am running a G5 Intel quad. OS X10.5.2.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I hace the same problem as you.
    Did you get resolve it?
My Xserve can not mount XRaid RAID. Dont' appear in diskutil !!!

  • My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. And now it will not mount despite my various efforts. I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me with this?

My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. I copied some files from another drive onto the RAID drive, ejected it, and worked on another project for a few hours. When I went to mount the RAID drive again so I could work on the project associated with the drive (I'm a freelance video editor) it would not mount. I've tried everything. It boots up perfectly fine, the drive seems to have no hardware problems. It shows up on Disk Utility and in System Information but is listed as not mounted. I've verified it on Disk Utility and it tells me everything with the drive is fine. I've tried all the various restarting my iMac, ejecting and reconnecting the drive, shutting down the whole system and starting it back up, relaunching Finder, and nothing works. Starting to panic because this is a client's drive, I have no idea what the issue is, it worked perfectly fine only hours ago, nothing happened to it in the meantime, and I fear continuously connecting and ejecting it because I don't know what the state is with the data and if this is only going to further aggravate the problem. I've been up and down Apple and g-raid forums and can't get a straight answer anywhere. I need to know that the data is safe, the drive is undamaged, and how to get it to mount on my iMac. Can anyone out there help me with this??

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • External SCSI RAID drives not mounting

I have an ATTO UL3D RAID that was working fine and I updated to the recommended 10.3.9 Apple update and now my drives are not mounting on the desktop. They show up in Disk Utility and I can initialize them, but I have some important data that I want to rescue. I followed all of the suggestions from ATTO but nothing. Can anyone please help? Thanks.
    G5 Dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Mine take a very very long time to mount then they will not sleep even when unmounted.  The firewire driver in Mavericks needs some work.  If at all possible, I would use USB until the driver get's resolved.

  • Xserve Raid will not mount - fibre channel link down

I came back from being out of town and my Xserve is running, but will not mount on the G5 tower via fibre channel. It was powered off and up again and still nothing. Apple tech says to reset raid controllers, however, I have sensitive data on the drives and lots of video/FCP projects on there. It has just run out of warranty and now asked to pay $199 per incident to get any help. I will gladly take any help.
Read the boards, ran Disk Utility and still did not show up.
Also, told the fibre cables tend to "burn out" but have yet to spend money if this is not the problem.
    Thanks.

Resetting the controllers is non-destructive. However, if you power-cycled the array, that should take care of it.
told the fibre cables tend to "burn out"
I've never experienced (or heard of this) myself, and have never had a problem on any of my arrays, some of which have been running for years with zero problems. Of course, environment (especially heat) could play a part, but it seems a little bit of a stretch to me.
Does RAID Admin have anything to say about the RAID?

  • Our XServe-RAID volume does not mount anymore...

Our XServe-RAID volume does not mount anymore.
On /var/log/system.log I could find the following.
Feb 22 09:52:29 ogre kernel: jnl: open: journal magic is bad (0xf433f != 0x4a4e4c78)
Feb 22 09:52:29 ogre kernel: hfs: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0).
It appears the the journaling is badly screwed.
I tryed to disable the journaling with no success.
    Here is what I get.
    ogre:/var/log root# diskutil disablejournal disk2s3
The selected journaling request does not appear to be valid
After some googling I foud this :
    --- QUOTE ---
The more serious problem occurs when the contents of the journal file are corrupted in such a way that the operating system does not proceed to mount the volume. Fortunately, this problem is extremely rare (I have seen three reports of corrupted journal files at the MacFixIt Forums and Apple Discussion Forums since journaling was introduced).
Starting the journaling process is one of the first things that happens when a volume is recognized by the operating system. There appears to be no way to intervene in single-user mode before the journal file is examined. A message about bad journal magic appears. Unfortunately, every tool that can turn off journaling requires that the volume already be mounted.
If the Macintosh can boot under Mac OS 9, dealing with a corrupted journal file involves restarting under Mac OS 9 and using a utility (such as our free TechTool Lite 3.0.4) to make visible these two invisible files at the root level of the volume:
    /.journal
    /.journalinfoblock
Once these files are made visible, they can be deleted. Mac OS 9 does not support journaling, and recognizes nothing special about these files. Neither of these files can be seen in Terminal or in single-user mode in Mac OS X, because they are considered part of the disk directory.
If the Macintosh cannot boot under Mac OS 9, but the drive has Mac OS 9 drivers installed, the drive can be put into a Macintosh that can boot under Mac OS 9, or an ATA/IDE drive can be put into a suitable FireWire enclosure.
The possibility that you may need to remove these two journaling files under Mac OS 9 is a good reason for making sure that all volumes you use have Mac OS 9 drivers installed. The drivers must be installed when the drive is formatted.

  • XServe RAID volume does not mount

Without any modification to the system, a panic log from our XServe indicates:
    "Thu Jan 18 17:28:58 2007
    panic(cpu 0): HFS: corrupt VH on PBSRaid1, sig 0x4100, ver 0, blksize 0"
The volume PBSRaid1 does not mount anyway from that date.
    Diskutil reports:
    "Verifying volume “disk2s3”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid extent entry
The volume PBSRaid1 needs to be repaired.
    Volume check failed."
DiskUtil is unable to repair the volume.
    My configuration is:
    XServe bi-G3 1GHz, MacOSX Server 10.3.9
XServe RAID with 5 disks RAID5 on the left side (OK) and 4 disks RAID5 on the right side (the bad volume)
All the controls are "green" and nothing wrong appeared in the events log obtained via RAID ADmin.
Any suggestion to repair are welcome, as we have many data from confocal microscopy on that volume.
    Thanks

XServe bi G3-1GHz (oct 2003)+ XServe RAID Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Right, Dave.
DW 4 rebuilt a preview folder which contains all the files in correctly named folders.Only 3 files among thousands has been saved in a Rescue folder !
It also restored the right volume label, lost in DiskUtil, fsck, pdisk and others.
    Very nice tool.
While DW was building its preview, the disk 9 lighted red and a lot of failures of the controler 2 appear in the events log of the XServe RAID.
At this time, the RAID is rebuilding with our spare disk.
I think we have to change both the disk 9 and the controler 2 despite it lights green currently.

  • Why does raid array not mount?

Set-up: (Equipment was Purchased NEW July 2004)
Xserve: running OSX Server version: 10.3.9
Xserve Raid Box with both arrays using Raid-5:
Array One has Five 250GB ADM (this side works and mounts fine-NO Problems)
Array Two has Four 250GB ADM (this side DOES NOT mount) Our name for this Array/volume is: "RAID2RIGHTSIDE"
We've been using both sides (array 1 & 2) for years with no trouble. Sever locked-up last week and was shut-down, since then Array Two will not mount.
Currently I have all normal green lights (front and back of Xserve Raid Unit)
Disk Utillites 10.4.4: We can see the Array Two from within DU, though the name of the volume is gray/dimmed
Raid-Admin version 1.5.1: shows Array Two IS ON-LINE (all green lights too)
    Things I tried-MULTIPLE Times
-Shut-down Xserve & Xserve Raid Unit and disconnect power and Batteries, waited more than 10-mins
-Verified and Repaired Array Two using Disk Utilities version 10.4.4
-Xserve Raid Unit: Removed all cables, Batteries, Power supplies, Fiber Boards, and other board in back
-Xserve Raid Unit: Removed and reset ADMs
-Vacummed dust - all of above
Any ideas why Array Two (RAID2RIGHTSIDE) will not mount?  Your suggestions are appreiciated.

Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount but all the lights on the drives are green

Kind of lacking in detail there...
Did the other volume mount in the past? and it stopped working? When? What changed?
What does Raid Admin.app have to say about it?
Does it see the drives? a RAID set on those drives? A link on the fiber channel connection?

Gather your crew and discuss your worst case project recovery scenario. If HUGE can fix it for you, then you will have the cozy satisfaction of knowing you have a plan in place.
