Half star ratings in Windows 8.1?

How do I enable half star ratings in iTunes in Windows 8.1?
I know it has to be done through itunesprefs.xml but Windows 8.1 does not give you the option to go to C:\Users\<username>\appdata\roaming... to be able to locate the xml file in the first place.

Hi,
What's the secondary tunnel VPN? The Checkpoint VPN is a third-party product, about its issue, it's recommended you contact its official support.
If you point to the Windows 8.1 built-in VPN, here I suggest you follow this guide to check your operation step by step:
Set Up and Edit VPN Connections in Windows 8
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj613767.aspx
And troubleshoot its connection via this tutorial:
Why am I having problems with my VPN connection?

Note: It's also applied to Windows 8.1.

    Hello TC,
How do I enable half-star ratings on my iTouch? (I already have them enabled in iTunes on the computer I sync with.)
Currently you can't and AFAIK nobody has found a way yet. So far it's only possible in iTunes as you have already done.

  • Issue with Star Ratings in Windows Media Player 12 on Win7

The particular issue I'm having is this. I can star rate my music a 1, 2, 3, or 4. However if I try to rate anyone particular song a 5 star Rating, it shows it as a 0 star rating. This is happening on my desktop system as well as my laptop.  I never
had this problem before. And I'm not really sure when this problem started. Also, it shows 5 star rated songs a 0 star rating in explorer as well. Any help to figure out this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for all who reply.

    Hi Cougar Mutimedia ,
Will the issue occur with specific file type , specific file or all the file ?Have you tried to re-join the music to have a check ?
We can try the built-in troubleshoot tool to have a check :
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories\Windows Media Player Library ,Windows Media Player Settings
Or try the following tool :
Fix Windows Media Player video, and other media or library issues
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/windows_media_player_diagnostic?wa=wsignin1.0
If the issue persists,we may need to reinstall the Windows Media Player to have check .
Click “Start” button, type “windows features” in the program search box and hit enter.
    1. In the “Windows Features” dialog box, look for “Media Features” and expand it.
    2. Clear “Windows Media Player” check box.
    3. As soon as you clear the check box, you will see a pop-up saying that “The following Windows features will also be turned off because they are dependent on Windows Media Player.” The listed program is “Windows Media Center”.
    4. Go ahead and click “Yes”. Windows will now begin uninstalling WMP12.
    5. You to restart Windows for the uninstallation to complete.
    6. Click “Start” button, type “windows features” in the program search box and hit enter.
    7. In the “Windows Features” dialog box, look for “Media Features” and expand it.
    8. Check boxes “Windows Media Player” and “Windows Media Center”.
    9. Click “OK”. Windows will take some time in reinstalling them. Wait for the process to finish.
    10. You to restart Windows for the installation to complete.
    Best regards

  • Smart playlists and half-star ratings

Is it possible to make a smart playlist for songs less than 3-1/2 stars? I saw one post from 2008, but it's too complicated and beyond my computer skills. I am on a Macbook.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, just put two rules:  "Rating" "is" "3 stars" and "Rating" "is less than" "3 stars."  Set the 2 rules to "Match Any."

  • Half Stars in iTunes 11.2

For years, I've been able to update iTunesPrefs.xml to allow half star ratings on my Windows machine.  I just upgraded to iTunes 11.2 and it now appears that user preferences are gone in the xml file.
Is this no longer an option?  I wish Apple would just let us choose it from within the application.

The option to enable half star ratings from within the application, like optional disc and track numbers in file paths, was removed many builds ago. I've tried the iTunesPref.xml hack that I think still worked on iTunes 11.1.5 but it seems that the option is no longer supported.

  • Half Star rating just in Library ?????????

I just downloaded the AppleScript for Half Star rating and it works,
BUT I can't make a smart playlist with half star ratings (for example as song with a 3 1/2* rating isn't shown in a smart playlist with 'greater than 3* and less than 4* rules).
Also in the 'Get info' box of a song, a song with a 2 1/2* rating is shown with a 2* rating.
So a half star rating is only shown and can be set up in the Library.
Maybe there is a script to change this ??? Otherwise in my opinion, half star rating is quite useless.

It's obviously an unactivated feature that Apple have yet to implement. I too have the script and was hoping that iTunes 6.04 would activate this but it hasn't. My guess is they need to get it working on the iPod firmware before they update it in iTunes. Here's hoping for an update soon...

  • Star Ratings: solid stars opposed to empty stars

    hello,
i have noticed that when i give star ratings in iTunes that some of the stars fill in and some are left empty in the center. does anyone know what the difference represents?
    thanks in advance...

You mean the stars will actually be "turned on" so to speak, but with a hole in the middle, like a star shaped donut?
I know ratings did, and probably still do, support half star ratings. You can not do it in iTunes directly but there are scripts to assign half stars and they will show up as half stars. Perhaps related to that?

  • Transferring Star ratings in iTunes

After using iTunes on a windows machine for years, I have taken the plung and purchased a mini-MAC. I have transferred all my songs from iTunes on the windows machine to iTunes on the mini-MAC. I have also figured out how to import my playlists from the PC to the MAC. Is there any way to "transfer" the star ratings of the songs from the PC iTunes to the MAC iTunes? I would really hate to lose the ratings on over 2000 songs?
    Thanks
Mini Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I did it by making 5 separate smart playlists on the original machine, called '5star', '4star', '3star', etc. Then I exported the playlists - but as .txt files, NOT .xml files.
I imported these playlists onto the new machine, then selected each of the imported playlists, one at a time, and assigned the appropriate star rating to all songs in each list. (Ctrl-A will select all songs in each list; then Ctrl-I will bring up one Info screen for each entire playlist, and you can go to the Options tab to set the star rating for all songs in each list.)
Once I figured it out, it went pretty fast. You can delete both the smart playlist and the imprted lists after the ratings are assigned.

  • Importing photos from ZoomBrowser into iPhoto without losing keywords and star ratings

I have been using Canon's ZoomBrowser EX on my Windows Vista laptop. I have just bought a MacBook Air running Lion. I would like to import all of my photos to iPhoto, but when I do this I lose all of the keywords and star ratings I have associated with my many photos. Is there any way to import the photos into iPhoto while retaining the keywords and star ratings so that I can use them in iPhoto? Doing this manually would be impractical due to the large number of photos involved.
    Thanks.
    - Charlie

    Keywords:
Iphoto can certainly import them if they are written to the correct fields of the standard metadata. They key question is can your Windows app write them to the files?
    Ratings
There's no real way to share ratings via standard metadata, but if you can write the keywods, then you can quickly tag the pics with simple keywords (1star, 2star) and when imported to iPhoto recreate your rating system.
So, the question is really about your existing software and what it can do.

  • Lost star ratings on my chosen photos in Filmstrip mode....

    Hello,
Have recently lost my star ratings on my files while in Filmstrip mode and the marker that showed that the file had been edited has disappeared ( the little half moon things on the upper right side of the photo... Please help. Im assuming it is a setting but dont know which one

Were they raw images? Did you move them from one folder to another?
A raw image from a Canon or Nikon or other cameras has a raw image that cannot store any changes you make to your image. Rather, ACR creates a side-car file that must be in the same folder as the images. You will see your file and the sidecar so (for example) a cannon image might be _MG_3404.CR2 and the sidecar file would be _MG_3404.XMP. As long as those two are in the same folder, everything is great. Until you move one or the other from the folder. Then Bridge, ACR, or PS doesn't know what to do because there are no clues for the original image to KNOW that a sidecar file exists. If you still have the sidecar files, simply rejoining the two into the same folder will sove the problem.
One easy resolution to this is to convert the original image from the original fomat to a DNG. There are MANY MANY benefits to this (and no liabiliities) but for your circumstances, the sidecar file is stored in the DNG. Your original raw image is also stored within this DNG so they cannot be separated.
There are many ways to convert your images to DNG, one is during the original downloading: if you are using Bridge's Photo Downloader, there is an option to convert them to DNG during downloading. That's what I always do. After the fact conversion can be done using Adobe's DNG Converter.

  • 1.1: No more star ratings on thumbnails?

    Hello all,
As most of you did, I upgraded Aperture to 1.1. I'm now having a very annoying problem that I was hoping someone may be able to give some insight into.
When I'm going through the images (either fullscreen or windowed), when I would assign star-ratings or keywords, a little star icon and a "keyword" icon would show up on the thumbnail. Now, however, those icons do not show up, and I have no idea if I've rated the picture (or, for that matter, what I rated it). Is this a bug? A feature of 1.1? A problem with my Aperture 1.1.
I checked preferences, but that did not have anything to indicate that this is a feature that needs (re-)enabling.
I welcome any thoughts. Thanks in advance!
    Doug

Hi Doug - check your view options: Cmd-J, or View menu>View Options...
In the options pane, is the heading "Grid View" selected/checked?

  • PSE8 star ratings

I think that star ratings in PSE 8 are called Star Ratings rather than "Favourites". Whatever they are called I can set them from each photo when in max sized mode, or by right-clicking then going Ratings etc.
What I dont have is these ratings visible in the navigation pane as part of the keywords hierarchy. Its a long time ago, but I think this catalogue was created by upgrading it from PSE5. Is this a known problem and/or is there a known solution?
    Thanks for any help,
    Mike C

    99jon,
thanks for such a quick reply....
I think I understand that they are a parallel process. I seem to remember that at a point in the past they were available as part of the keyword hierarchy, and therefore could easily be used in conjunction with my own keywords to narrow the results shown in the organiser.
I now realise that what I mean is that they are not visible in the Navigator Pane. If this is not the right term, I am sorry - it seems to change from version to version.
I mean that when I have a collection of photos visble in the main window (show all), there is a pane that I can bring up on the right which shows all the keywords as a hierarchy or as a cloud.
I am sure that, at one time the Star Ratings were visible as part of that cloud/hierarchy and they are not now.
This may have happened at the same time as I migrated from 5 to 8 or not - there was alot on my mind at the time!

  • Star ratings in Bridge, contact sheet in InDesign

If i add star ratings to photos in Bridge, can I include them in my InDesign contact sheet using Tools>Indesign?

    Hi DeNoveau,
I was struggling with this same issue. I found a solution that is somewhat helpful. Not ideal but better than nothing.
    1. Create the InDesign contact sheet as you normally would.
    2. Choose Window > Automation > Scripts
    3. In the Javascript folder, find LabelGraphics.jsx
    4. In the panel that comes up, choose File Path
That should do it. As I said, not ideal but better than nothing.

  • 1/2 star ratings gone in 10.1

For a long time iTunes has had the "hidden" ability to display 1/2 star ratings.
This ability seems to have gone in iTunes 10.1.
Ratings are still stored internally as a number between 0 and 100, but a 90 no longer displays as 4 1/2 stars (instead it displays just as 4 stars).
I'd like my 1/2 stars back, but I'm mostly posting to warn people who might like the 1/2 stars and not want to loose them.
For me it is a dilema. I like that you can hide ping in 10.1. And I'll probably want to upgrade to iOS4.2. But I do like those 1/2 stars. Not sure what to do. . .

This is a ditto to dknightd's comment.
Since 2008 I have been using "I Love Stars" a free app that allowed to rate songs with half-stars. Before that I was using some Apple scripts (Doug's?) to do the same. That is 6 or 7 years of data wiped out by either OS 10.6.5 or iTunes 10.1! I am really surprised there aren't more people commenting (complaining) about this because without the kerfuffle I am not sure Apple will correct the situation.
    Please, please Mister Jobs....put the half-stars back. : (

  • Retrieving Photoshop star ratings from backup files

We held several years'  worth of lots of photos on a Windows laptop in Photoshop Elements. When the hard drive crashed, I restored the files from our backup drive onto our new Macbook. I've lost the star ratings, which we were about to use to select photos for printing. Apologies for the lack of technical detail, I understand that you should save metadata with the files, but this was presumably not done at the time.
    Many thanks, Naomi

This is the Photoshop forum and since Photoshop Elements is a separate and different program, the experts in that forum handle it better for you.
