Halo artifacts in text overlays

I am using overlays for text in my menus. The menus have been created in Photoshop CS3. In Photoshop, I am creating 720x480 images. I have the pixel aspect ratio view turned on...which I believe helps deals with the rectangular vs. square pixel issues.
When I create the text, I have learned that I need to rasterize it first before I copy that layer to create the text overlay. Next, I select all of the pixels in the overlay layer and fill the pixes with black. There is usually a single pixel halo around the text at this point. To account for that, I add a single pixel stroke around the overlay layer contents. Once I complete that step, in Photoshop, everything looks fine...the overlay perfectly masks the original rasterized text layer. Since I create the stroke as a Photoshop layer style, I make sure I flatten that layer (by merging it with a blank layer) to embed the layer style into the overlay layer itself. Next I output the menu background and menu overlay files as TIFF files. The overlay file contains black and transparent pixels. (I am using simple overlays.)
When I import these pieces into DVD Studio Pro, sometimes that nasty halo artifact raises its ugly head again. If I am using a light to medium button color in DVD Studio Pro, it is not noticeable. But selecting a darker color really makes the artifact stand out.
What step am I missing in my work flow here? Thanks in advance for your input.
Cheers!

Suzane:
Probably your problem is not in your overlay but in the color settings of your overlay/button in DVDSP.
Select your button, and in the Inspector pallette go to the Colors tab. Check Advanced and in the Selected settings do something like this:
using 3 different levels of the same color (in the example yellow) for ecah level of gray. The antialias in your overlay elements norders are grays pixels and probably the "halo" you see is the color that now you have in this settings for the gray tones.
Hope that helps !

  • Help me format text overlay in print module

I would like to print my photos with Caption field on one line and Date field on the next line. I would also like to change the font to something else. This is easily done in the slideshow module, just make two text overlays, position them where desired, pick a font and all done. Is it possible to do in the print module though? It seems as though only one overlay can be done. This is fine if I can force a line break, but I cannot seem to figure that out. Ctrl-Enter fails to work as does putting in the html code for a line break. I also cannot figure out if it's possible to change the font of the text overlay in the print module. Is what I wish to do possible? If so, how do I accomplish it? Many thanks!
Bonus points if it's possible to right justify and to bold the Caption field but leave the Date field in regular typeface.
I've also attempted this with the Identity Plate; it has all the formatting options I need, but it does not appear as though metadata can be displayed there, am I wrong?

Hopefully this will be improved drastically in the final release of version 2. In an earlier thread, I asked about printing that used to work in Lr 1.2 and stopped working in Lr 1.3. An Adobe engineer replied it was a known bug. I am also a pro photographer and love Lightroom. jc

  • Is there any way to export 2.35 Anamorphic source to a 16x9 letterboxed frame WITH timecode or text overlays?

I have been trying to export temp cuts of an anamorphic project (2.35:1) in a letterboxed 16:9 frame with timecode and text overlays and other Additional Video Effects. Converting the 2.35 to 16x9 has been a breeze with the Preserve Aspect Ratio option in Cropping & Padding . The problem is that the black bars that that puts in the 16:9 frame appear OVER any of the Additional Video Effects, thus covering them up.
E.g. if I select a Text Overlay and place it in the Center, I can see it just fine. But if I want it Upper Left, Title Safe, it is covered by the black space of the Letterboxing. So the Additional Video Effects are getting added, they are just getting covered by the letterboxing. You can even see the very edge of the text in the Title Safe position, peeking out from behind the letterboxing, which is, of course, frustrating .
Thus far it's been a two-step process: letterbox the anamorphic source, then add TC and other video effects in a second job.
So - is there any way to do this in ONE step? It would really help my anamorphic workflow.
    (apologies for the lengthy question.)
    [I'm using FCPX 10.1.3 & Compressor 4.1.3, in OSX 10.9.5 on Retina MBP, Late 2013, w/  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB]

    Thanks for the reply Russ.
Yes, I've considered adding titles and/or generators in the FCPX storyline, but this creates a need to render the entire timeline. As I'm juggling library locations and hard drive spaces I just didn't want to add a new render that will occupy a lot of space. It's also a bit of visual clultter for me, so my goal is to find the best workflow for adding this stuff on or after export.

I would like to use slideshow in lightroom to export my video as a full screen 1920x1080 video with text overlays.  I am using text overlay in lightroom as it reads from the metadata that is easy for me to input in the library screen.  When i export from lightroom slideshow and choose the 1920x1080 resolution the end product is a very small video in the middle of a black background.  i have double checked and do not have any borders turned on.  Another option would be to export from the library but lr mogrify does not seem to put text overlays on video either.  Any input would be welcome.

I dont understand anything you said in your post.
Do you have a specific question about video production?
The forums are for individual technical or creative issues that users have with video production. I am sur someone will be able to help you, but and to get a response it is best to ask a specific question.
Is this about a technical problem you have or something about setting up a web site? If its the latter this is the wrong forum.

  • Iphoto 08 and text overlays

Good evening. Does anyone know how I can add text overlays to images in iphoto 08? Version 7.1.1. I'm trying to insert text on the image itself, an example being copyright notice and the like.
Also, if there's a place I can find this answer thats incredibly obvious please let me know. I'll feel foolish but it would help me be more self-sufficient. Didn't see it in the manual, help file, the forum.

No you cannot do this with iPhoto. You'll need an external editor such as Acorn Graphic Coverter or Photoshop Elements . For watermarking check out iWatermark. There are other options - search on MacUpdate.

  • Text overlays

I have a text overlay which is one line long. when I swap the
cast member with another text that wraps to a second line, the text
on two lines is squished to the same height as the orignal text.
It looks like it is trying to fit the wrapped text into the
same area as the orignal text. Any solution for this? Or am I
loading the new text wrong? I use this code to replace the overlay
    text with a new text.

You may want to create your texture from a "container" image
object that is a power of 2, rather than creating it from a cast
member with random dimensions. Look at imaging lingo...
Measure the width and height of your text member after
putting the new text into it. Then create an image who's dimensions
are the next power of 2 larger than your text dimensions (ex. a 98
    x 14 text member would need a 128 x 16 image). Then copypixels()
the text member's image onto the container image, and create your
texture from the container image using #fromImageObject.
You can set the alpha of the image too, so the background of
    your text is transparent.

  • O.T. Sequential Number Text Overlay On Photos In A Batch Process

As ACDSee crops up on the forum from time to time, I thought this posting

I don't think it's possible to manually add OCRd text, but you can add form
fields with the text in them. And yes, it is possible to search the content
of form fields, using a script.

  • Font styles dont' work in Text Overlay/Timecode Generator

Has anyone every been able to get drop shadow to work in the "Select Font" section of the Text Overlay or TimeCode Generator within Compressor? I don't know if I'm selecting things in the wrong order or not but I've never been able to get this to work. The only areas of the "Select" font window that seems to work is the actual font, it's relative style (bold/oblique/etc) and the size. Color and Drop Shadow effects don't work.

According to FB3 help, Flex supports the following subset of
the CSS style properties as defined by the CSS specification:
    color
    fontFamily
    fontSize
    fontStyle
    fontWeight
    paddingBottom
    paddingLeft
    paddingRight
    paddingTop
    textAlign
    textDecoration

  • Different text overlays for each photo in a presentation?

    Hi
I'm doing a presentation of various photos and I'd like to include a different text overlay in each one. However, LR only seems to allow me to apply one caption to all the photos. How can I have a different caption on each photo? Thanks! Richard

In to the Metadata Panel in Library Module
    Click on each picture individually.
Fill out the Caption field for that picture.
Repeat until all photos have captions.
(Note if you have all selected or more than one selected and you are in Library Grid View, all photos will recieve the same caption. This may have been what happened to you.)
Set your Text overlay in the Slideshow Module to display <Caption>

  • Slideshow Text Overlay Question

I want tthe text overlay in the slide show module to include the file caption. My captions are long and need two or more rows of text. The problem I have is that Lightroom will only display the caption text on a single line that runs well outside of the slide area. Even if I make the text small by grabbing the center point of the text box and make the height small, the text stays on a single line and extends outside the slide area. I am not able to grab a corner and drag the text box to a more square proportion forcing the text to break into multiple lines. As far as I can tell this is not possible. Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help

In the Metadata panel in Library Module (Grid View or Loupe View), when you enter text in the Caption field, and you want a new line use Ctr. / Cmd + <Enter>.
When you use the <Text template Editor> for entering {Custom} text, use Ctrl / Cmd + J.

  • Is the TEXT OVERLAY with Avid DnX codec fixed yet?

You can't apply a Text Overlay or Watermark filter to Quicktimes using the Avid DnX codec, please tell me this is finally resolved in the new version...

Compressor won't natively supporrt DnX unless you have a thrid party plugin that does that with QTPro.  If you used a third party add-on before upgrading, check with that developer for an update.

  • Why are render times 3x as long with a Motion text overlay in FCP6?

    Hi,
Since the upgrade, I have noticed that when I bring in a text overlay from Motion the render times and export times are 3 to 4 times as long?
Does anybody know why or have a fix for this?
    Thank You

Match the project's properites in Motion to those of your sequence settings in FCP... so for example if you're working in DV, then set the Motion files to also be DV NTSC. That might speed things up a bit... The text files from Motion won't be as fast as say a Title 3D text file in any event.

  • Merge two text overlay layers without losing effect?

I'm using PS CS4 and I have two text layers on top of each other (they same the same thing) and the layer style for both is set for "overlay". I want to merge (and rasterize) the two layers but keep the look of the doubled up overlay effect.
    Can this be done??
    Thanks...

So if both are set to overlay, then that means they both depend on the pixels below them for the effect. So you have a choice to make.
    1) You can leave them as is (which would be preferable in my mind). Why do you need to merge them?
    2) You can select the transparency of one of the type layers (command-click on the layer icon in the layer panel), and then copy merged and paste. This should give you the layer you desire. I'd save the old layers for later, just in case.
    3) Something I haven't thought of.

  • Strange Artifacts In Text

I've exported out a Self Contained movie file and the text in it looks fine. But after I compress the video down I'm getting these strange artifacts in the lettering. Check the images below. I messed around with the bitrate quite a bit and I'm still getting it. Help!

    http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g1...Picture3-1.png

Okay, I've created the text in Photoshop CS2 against a plain black background in white using Arial at 48pt. I then delete my background so there is just the text and save it out as a png. Then I bring the png into Final Cut for laying over top of my footage.
My footage is HDV from a Sony HDR FX1 so it's sized at 1440x1080. I have been compressing using Visual Hub, at "go nuts" with a bitrate setting at 6000 and final size at 1280x720. I've also tried exporting using QT Pro with a photojpg codec set to Best.
