HANA implementation in BW

Hi
Currently we are at BW 7.4 with SP6.0.
Migrated all frontend objects like queries and web templates from version 3x to 7x.
Most of the backend objects like info cubes, ODS and  data flow (Transfer rules & Update rules) are still running in 3.x version.
We are about to start HANA implementation in our BW environment.
Since backend objects are still running in 3x version, is this going to impact HANA implementation?
Before HANA implementation is it necessary to migrate all 3x backend objects  7x?
Please advise.
Sat

Hi Satish Tummala
It would be good practice if you can migrate 3.x flow to 7.x where you can actually get advantages of new features of technology/latest version.
Please do remember that, if you continue with 3.x flow and converted only targets(DSO & Cubes) to HANA optimized, your update rules can never enhanced in future, unless you migrate it to 7.x.
Hope this info helps you.  thank you.

  • Are SAP HANA implementations on HANA as a Database or HANA as a Modeling tool

    Hi all,
I've a general question today about the HANA as a product.
I want to know if most of the SAP HANA implementations that have been carried out in the last 3 or 4 years, were they mostly on HANA as a InMemory Database product or was it implemented as a Modelling tool. What I understand is most of the implementations on HANA have been done with HANA as a database replacing the customer's existing databases mostly Oracle or SQL Server. There are lots of case studies available on this situation. But I am not able to find any information on the clients who have chosen HANA as a Modelling tool along with HANA as a database.
In other words I am interested in knowing a rough estimate/number of customers who have implemented SAP HANA Modelling as a tool. Are there any success factors or case studies available giving facts and figures as to how customers have benefited by modelling on HANA. Assuming that the customer/s who have implemented HANA Modelling were on SAP BW 7.0 earlier I want to know how did they benefit by going for HANA Modelling using HANA Studio and why did they move from BW Modelling to HANA Modelling and what were the benefits they have reaped in.
How is it different from modelling data in BW DSOs and Cubes and MultiProviders, and modelling the same in Attribute Views, Analytic Views, Calculation views and native HANA SQL.
    Please explain.
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Pavan.

    A) hana is a database, which combines memory and technology.
A common hana server has at leaste 128gb ram. why? because the tables (or columns of that tables) are loaded in memory and are consumed from there. Hana uses compresion (1:11 ratio) and use columnar tables, because it speeds up the data reading from the database.
Hana have 3 parts of storage:
    1) memory (explained above)
    2) data: the disk where data is recorded
    3) log: the disk where the last transactions are logged and it provides with recovery fails
    B) you can have diferents scenearios (I will explain some of them):
BW on hana: it speeds up the data access due to hana technology
suite on hana: ERP and BW on hana
Hana has your DW database: you can use hana like a common database and benefits your organization with the speed of hana.
    hope it helps.
this image can show you the diferents scenarios

  • SAP Hana implementation project - beginning tasks

    Hello,
We want to implement a new SAP landscape running with SAP Hana database. As I understand, the SAP Hana database is a database that runs on a specific server appliance, am I right?
For we can know which SAP Hana server appliance to buy we need first to estimate the sizing about it! We want to implement SAP ERP product (EHP6 or 7) on Hana DB, but we don´t know how to start... this is, we don´t know how to measure this, in order to buy the best solution (server appliance) for our own scenario!
I checked some information in the following areas:
    service.sap.com/sizing
and also the Quick Sizer tool (service.sap.com/quicksizer) but this is so much confused tool... I don´t understand it at all.
Can you help me with your experience which SAP Hana server appliance we need to buy for this kind of project?!
    Thank you,
    samid raif

    Hi Dario,
Does the calculation view work without xsodata service? From the URL, your XS project name should be Project_DM, but from the xsodata source, the project name is EricssonItalgas. I'm confused with this. Did you use rewrite_rules or?

  • Enterprise HANA on Cloud vs on-premise

    Hi,
As I understand Enterprise HANA on cloud is a monthly subscription model where a client bound by stiff budget constraints can start off with HANA implementation. Ofcourse, it does offer more advantages as well.
With all of this, I wonder why I haven't seen many HANA on Cloud customers as opposed to on-premise.
Can someone please help me look at the disadvantages of Having a Cloud based solution?
    Thanks,
    Shyam

    Hi Shyam,
You can find a lot of useful information on Enterprise HANA Cloud in this page.

  • BW on HANA Hardware sizing and set up

    Hello All,
IBM sells the HANA appliance as M blocks (512 Gb) or S block (256 Gb).
We have purchased IBM's 3 M-blocks (512GB) for a BW 7.3 on HANA implementation, currently in the planning phase.
As i understand, we can only use 50% of memory space, ie. 256GB per Node, total = 768GB.
Our BW Footprint is around 500 Gb so it should fit assuming the data will be indexed across the 3 HANA nodes, (like BWA)
We were told that we can chain the 3 M-blocks together to make 1.5TB available.
However few articles (dated Jun 2011) suggested that SAP only supports --> running the HANA on a certified single server as of today.
Please share your insight on this Topic.  Is it possible to chain the 3-512GB HANA nodes for BW 7.3 on HANA ?
    Thanks
    Ajay Pathak.

    @Paul,
Actually my BW Footprint is ~2.5TB, I had already factored in the 5:1 compression ratio and expect 2.5TB to be migrated from DB2 to  HANA IMDb, compressed to ~500GB.
This will certainly not fit into 1 512 GB (IBM M-node) plus we need to account for growth as well. I hope it is possible to spread the data on HANA IMDb across multiple node, just like BWA.. it sounds simple, but need to know if SAP supports this.
    @Vitality,
I could not find an answer in the PAM for HANA as well (Q. Is it possible to chain the 3-512GB HANA nodes for BW 7.3 on HANA ?) .. I will check with the IBM Engineer on my next conf call with them.
..and I agree with you, the Compression Ratio keeps changing, i have heard it ranges from 4:1 to 10:1 depending of the type of the table/column being compressed.. so 5:1 is a conservative average we are using for planning purposes.
Do you know if there is a difference in the compression ratios for BW on HANA vs HANA native, my discussion with some colleague leads me to expect better comp ratio on HANA Native, please let me know your thoughts on this...
    Thanks
    Ajay Pathak.

  • BW Extractors/DXC/BODS + HANA Native Star Schema: Is this mixed scenario possible?

    Dear Experts,
(Excuse me for providing an extra detailed background before the actual question)
Our Transaction systems portfolio (Industry Pharma/Manufacturing, operating in 170+ countries)
SAP ECC on SQL Server (implementation in-progress) + 10 Other Custom Applications
    Our BI Portfolio
Nothing. Already purchased HANA (7.4 planned version) + Business Objects and will be implemented along with SAP ECC ERP
So point is our BI is a greenfield project and we don't have legacy of any BW Cubes / BEx Queries. As a BI/DW Architect I am evaluating different models to implement HANA, where design objective is to have maximum simplicity, extremely fast speed to respond to change requests, SQL based modeling and fully exploiting the raw power of HANA.
    Question -
What is the best way to utilize the "tremendous" power of ready made DataSources / Extractors and delegating this work to BW part and still allowing myself the freedom to do my custom modeling - relational / star (on top of imported data into HANA using these DataSources) and not restricting myself to Artifacts of Cubes & Similar providers. Whether to use DXC, BW Extractors => DSO... ? (final exposure will be through HANA Analytical / Attribute / Calculation Views)
Also would appreciate if you can express your views on this way of HANA implementation.
Along with this custom modeling, for operational reporting we are anyways going to use HANA Live and SLT.
A detailed explanation / rationale behind this approach is mentioned in the attached file.
    Thank you for reading this.
    regards, Abhishek.
    [email protected]

    Abhishek,
yes, the mixed scenarios are explained in https://www.experiencesaphana.com/community/solutions/net-weaver-bw/bwonhanafaq/content, and especially in the section EDW https://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-59781 and Mixed Scenario: https://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-59762.

  • Ranking on an olap connection

    Hello guys,
    I'm using DS 1.3 OVER BI 4.1 SP3.
My model was universe-based until now.
Inside query specifications on universe, I was able to set TOP 10.
Now, I've advanced into OLAP over HANA, and I can't find a solution to TOP 10 (not even a dynamic ranking) on my Datasource.
Any simple solution for setting a constant ranking on a datasource which is HANA-OLAP-connection?
(And if we're at it, is there a solution for a dynamic ranking also? (plan for the future:))
    Thank you,
    Or.

    Hi Tammy,
Thanks for the reference, but It's not the right solution for me because I'm using graphical Calculation View.
From your link I somehow got into this link:
SAP HANA: Implementing RANK using Graphical calculation View
If I had "RANK" column it'll be simple actually as a Variable inside HANA,
but I have to say that this guide for creating a "rank" column is way-too complicated to replace the good-old TOP N inside SQL or other tools.
Do you know of any simpler way inside HANA, maybe in newer versions, of creating a RANK?
    Thank you,

  • Displaying Description for SAP Table Field in the View

    Hi
We are working on a HANA implementation Project Where we have a requirement to build View on HR tables.
Issue: When i join HR infotypes (tables ) in the view it is getting only Technical names and not descriptions. i have used Semantics option which is available and still it doesn't bring description in to the View.
Please let me know if any one has solution or work around for this.
We have more than 100 fields in the View so maintaining Descriptions manully will take lot of time.
    Regards

    Hi Chandra
Yes, We have Description available in the sourece tables.
We are connected to HANA Suite and tables in ECC having Descriptions.

  • Template file - EPM.hdbdd

    Hi Experts,
I am not able to find the demo file EPM.HDBDD in the demo content.
Can you please guide and provide the sample code of all Various Tables in 1 file.
    Thanks

    Hi Wenjun,
    Thanks.
However i am not able to find SHINE folder anywhere in HANA Studio. Probably not all the content has been installed here.
Also i would like to have your suggestion in knowing that we have recently started with 1 of HANA Implementation  and need to clarify that whether is it recommended to start development following various suffix notification i.e. hdbdd , hdbview , hdbsequence etc. in Project explorer in Development perspective or one can start directly in system view in Modeler perspective by creating this directly in the respective Package.
Assume my scope lies in that all the sap tables would be replicated into HANA via SLT or the relevant data source which can be done through BODS would create table into hana directly.
Please suggest keeping  Life cycle management , Transport management etc into consideration.
Your guidance would be highly appreciated.
