Hand Tool  Bug?

I've been having problems with the hand tool suddenly being selected (I never use it) and then not being able to switch it. Anyone else?

Your settings folder is corrupt. Either hold down the command option shift keys while relaunching Illustrator or go to your users preferences and trash the folder.

  • Hand Tool Bug? PSCS

I'm nt particularly knowledgeable about the ins and outs of this program yet, so maybe this is just a setting I can't seem to find.
Whenever I start up the program (Photoshop CS) the hand tool is selected. No matter what I try I can not select any other tools at all. I've been trying to self teach myself this program for about 6 months and I've never chosen to use the hand tool at all, so I never intentionally set anything to make it default or anything like that.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for reading and any help offered.

sticky space bar? press space a couple of times. pressing space temporarily brings up the hand tool.

  • CS3 Bugs? Hand Tool & Proportional Scale Not Working

I am unable to press the spacebar to utilize the Hand Tool, and unable to use shift to proportionally scale objects. If I close down Illustrator and restart my computer, the problem will be resolved for the first file that is opened. Subsequent files have the same issue - hand tool and scaling does not work.
Has anyone else experienced this, or possibly have a solution other than constant rebooting?
    Thanks,
    Justine

OK I don't think Scott was at all condescending, since you did not mention the steps you took to try to resolve the problem. I am assuming as well that after you updated the Microsoft products and Quicken and etc. that you then trashed the Illustrator Settings folder from within your user preferences folder. Am I correct?
    If not do so.
You can also try to log i as a new user. If that works it is more than likely a user issue if it does not work more than likely hardware such as your keyboard or possibly a system issue or application conflict.
I would think it is a user account issue, that is a corruption or conflict in the preferences folder but not necessarily Illustrator.

  • Arrow and Hand tool question/problem

The pointer tool is selected in the tool bar but when I go into the Timeline it defaults to the Hand tool. So when I try and resize the clip length, for example, I can because the Hand tool moves the whole screen.
Its only starting doing this is there a setting to change this?
    Thanks

It's a bug - try trashing your prefs:
    1) Quit Motion.
    2) Navigate to User/Library/Preferences.
    3) Locate com.apple.motion.plist and delete it.

  • Hand Tool Default in Acrobat 9

I hope this is an easy question, but it has been bugging me since my last update.  When I view a PDF (Acrobat 9 Pro) the select tool is the default.  I cannot find any setting that will make the hand tool be the default.  Does anyone know where this setting is, or some other way to save your preferences?

    Yes, just go here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • 'Select' tool becomes 'hand' tool...?

I'm hitting some key wrong here. I'm trying to work with the 'select' tool, moving 'text' around over an animated map.
Somehow the 'select' tool becomes a 'hand' tool ... and then I find I can't move the clips on the timeline, I can't move the 'text' blocks to position them. It keeps happening, and then I can't unlock the pattern to have only the 'select' tool. It keeps bopping back to the 'hand' tool. Pray tell, what keystroke might I be doing wrong?

I've seen that too. I think it's a bug because I know the shortcuts and I'm definitely not pushing the spacebar by accident. Sometimes the hand tool just shows up and won't go away from my experience at least.
It goes away, for me, after a restart. It's usually a good indicator of a much-needed break.

  • Temporary Hand Tool is not working when Firefox is open

    Hi guys
Hopefully some of you can help me with a problem that has annoyed me for quite some time now..
Quite often my temporary hand tool (accessed by pressing the space bar) is not working which causes me to move objects instead of panning around my  Photoshop canvas. I don't know what causes it, but when I shut down my browser (Firefox 3.6.19) everything returns to normal in Photoshop and I can pan around the canvas again using the hand tool by pressing the spacebar shortcut.
When I open reopen Firefox I can use the space bar short cut but only for a few minutes and the problem occurs again. The regular hand tool (accessed by pressing H) is working fine all the time.
This is a shortcut that I use so very much and would really like to know how to fix this issue.
    I'm using Photoshop CS5 and Mac OS X 10.6.8
    Aske

So Firefox or something loaded in Firefox is eating key events.
You need to start troubleshooting Firefox.  The first step would be to disable add-ons in Firefox.  Also let the Mozilla folks know that Firefox is causing this (I believe they've had similar bugs before).

  • The Hand Tool has stopped working

I've noticed something odd recently. My mouse has been behaving weirdly. First of all, for about a week, mouse response in Logic was jerky and sluggish. Not enough for it to be a real issue, but annoying enough, what with all the crashing and all. That's stopped now, but something else has taken its place:
The hand tool no longer moves or copies channel-strip inserts or I/O settings from one strip to the other. I just get the standard click menu. The cursor turns into a hand, it just doesn't work. Also, when double-clicking on an insert or AU object sometimes doesn't open it, it just brings up the menu.
I've tried theree different mice and messed with my mouse settings in sys prefs but it still doesn't work!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have this problem across the suite -- in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Strangely, the problem turned out to be some kind of conflict with the Chrome browser. When I quite Chrome, the spacebar starts working properly again.
I've seen people saying that the same thing has happened with Firefox, so it might be a more general bug with the system accessing the web while Adobe apps are running. It seems to happen in particular when I am using Gmail or any site that uses a lot of AJAX (Twitter seems to trigger it as well) and is constantly refreshing in the background, but that may just be a coincidence.
    Hope this helps!

  • Always use Hand Tool on startup

    Hi All
I just installed Adobe reader 9.3.
Whatever file I opened, it starts with select tool, even after I choose hand tool and reopen it, it will still starts with select tool.
How can I force it to always use the »Hand Tool«?
On startup Adobe Reader uses the »Select Tool« by default and I always must switch to the »Hand Tool« manually.
    I think it's a bug.
    Thanks in advance.

i'll bump this as well if you don't mind - i have same problem.
running Reader 9.3.2 on XP SP3.
no matter what I try it always opens with Select tool active, rather than my preferred option of Hand tool. Every startup I must manually change it to Hand tool. Very frustrating. I'd tried changing many options in the preferences but no joy so far.
Any solution/suggestions would be great, thanks.

  • Hand tool ambush

Have any of you had a problem with this?
I'll be working in Motion for 20 minutes or so, and then something happens... the hand tool starts taking over... I select other tools, but as soon as I click anything in the canvas BANG! The hand tool is back!! And I can't then use any other tools until I close out of Motion and open it back up.
Anybody seen this? Is there an auto-revert-to-the-hand-tool switch somewhere that I'm accidentally toggling?
    Thanks,
    Clint

Is this the bug that has been with Motion since day one? It usually follows some text box stuff.
The answer has been to press the space bar - your clip won't play and the tool will switch out of the Hand - easier than quitting...

  • Spacebar to toggle Hand Tool is not working (CS5)

In InDesign, using the spacebar to toggle the Hand Tool stops working.
When it stops working in InDesign, it also stops in Photoshop and Illustrator.
If I close the applications, and restart the machine - this combination starts working again, however after a while it stops working again.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated - you don't realize how much you use this 'til it goes away!

    iMac 27" / 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB Ram
    OS X 10.6.5

Okay, so I think I might be able to help. I'm not a tech expert, but I had this issue today. It only started happening after I had an new hard drive put in, at which point a new internet security program was installed on my computer. Before this program was on my machine, this "temporary hand tool with the use of the space bar in Adobe CS products not working" problem did not occur. So, I figured it had to do with upgrading from OS 10.6 to OS 10.7 or with Webroot {the internet security program}, since those were really the only things that changed from pre- hard drive crash to post- hard drive crash. When I was poking around Webroot, I noticed there was a "Pause Secure Keyboard Entry" button to choose. Seeing that word "keyboard" was the lightbulb moment. Coupled with the comment above from Larry G. Schneider...
It's a Mac OS security bit which blocks the modifier keys from working if there is an open port which has access. It's supposed to prevent malware from executing system events.
I figured that my Webroot {which is meant to prevent malware and such} was overriding certain keyboard functions to prevent malware from detecting my keyed entries in place that could breech security on my machine.
So, I decided to try turning that pause button on... and sure enough, my temporary space bar hand tool came back. That is the only thing that worked. Not quitting out of Chrome. I suspect the reason for that is because Webroot was still operating outside of my Chrome application being open and active. So, for those who were able to get it to work again by quitting Chrome {or Safari, Firefox, etc... any of the above mentioned}, perhaps in quitting out, it was automatically quitting some other type of security extension that is loaded in the browser that does not work independently of the browser, but only when the browser is open. Quitting the browser would quit the security extension that was preventing keystroke detection and securing keyboard entry.
Apparently, this could also be turned on in Terminal {something I discovered by researching my problem and finding an article about it}. See screen capture below.
So, if it can also be turned on there, I imagine it's something that comes with several applications or extensions. If you are experiencing this problem, my suggestion is to find out if there is somewhere on your machine, in some running program, where this security is turned on, and then try turning it off to see if you got your hand tool back. It worked immediately for me after having tried many other things. This might also explain why it's only a temporary fix for some... why it returns, because the default of that program that has the security {Secure Keyboard Entry} is to be on. The nice thing about Webroot is that the button to pause it is always available up in my top menu bar by the date and time on my mac, under the Webroot icon. I can pause it whenever I'm in InDesign {which is where I was experiencing the "bug"}, and then unpause it when I'm not using InDesign to restart that added measure of security.
Hope this helps a lot of people with this issue. I don't seem to have found a solid answer on any forum, but this seems pretty thorough to me. Interested in finding out if others are helped by these same steps. I hope so. And if so, I hope that more applications will make it more obvious so that people don't have to dig around so much. For instance, it would be nice if Adobe saw it as a known and fixable issue and provided documentation about it... what to do or check if it happens to you... so that people won't have to hunt around as much as I did {although, that part was kind of fun and I felt pretty smart and accomplished afterward... even knew the fix when talking to a Geeksquad guy while he was not aware of the problem nor did he have any idea what to suggest}. For me, it was beyond frustrating, because I use that function in InDesign ALL the time. Hopefully Adobe will put something about this in their Help. Perhaps it's already there?? I just know I didn't find anyt
Anyway, just goes to show how much these forums help. Without this thread, I might not have thought twice about the "Pause Secure Keyboard Entry" button when I saw it.
Hope everyone gets a permanent solution to this problem!

  • Stuck on hand tool

Sometimes my tools get stuck on the hand tool. No matter which tool I select, I can't shake the hand tool and can't access the desired tool. Unless I close the program, or switch to another program and come back. Refreshing the screen doesn't help.
Is this a bug? Any ideas on how to prevent this? or kill it when it happens?
    thanks in advance!

    Worked for me!
I have spent all night re-starting, re-booting, re-installing and deleitng my preferences, to no avail.
I could not for the life of me get the damned hand tool to go away. Then I finally resort to adobe support and see this seemingly stupid suggestion that the space bar might be stuck. Sounds stupid but it can't hurt to check, right?
Turns out that was a brilliant suggestion. my space bar was stuck down.
Crazy how some little thing like that can have you ready to throw your computer out the window.
thanks for the suggestion. You saved my life!

  • Cursor defaulting and remaining on Hand Tool

    Hello all
I know this has come up in the forum a few times before, but a colleague and I are both having this issue (randomly, our tool defaults to the Hand Tool and will not switch to a another tool for some time, even after program closure and reopening).
Suggestions I've found here have been to switch off hardware acceleration (have done this on the card side) and to trash preferences, which we have both done but to no avail.
I'm wondering if the problem is persisting for others and/or someone has nailed the issue and could share their solution.
It's happening on three separate machines, so that's unusual in itself - am coming to the conclusion it's a bug, but haven't heard anything widescale about it, so it must be a select few (oh, the joy...).
Apart from this issue, am loving Id CS4 :)
    TIA for any help.

    I would suspect a hardware-factor, too.
You do have you tried tapping the space-bar repeatedly (and with some force)?
Have you tried trashing prefs (though that does seem unlikely to help)?
If it should indeed be some software problem you may want to provide more info on your system, though.

  • Using the rotate tool and hand tool at the same time in CS6

When using the rotate tool, you used to be able to use the hand tool even when the Rotate dialogue box was up. Is there a way to get that back?
I make Mandalas (http://www.behance.net/gallery/Mandala/2700497) and work from the center out. This poster is 18"x24" so once I start to get to the outer edge, I'm zoomed into the center at 6400% so I can get my crosshairs as precise as I can, then enter a number (45 degrees, 20 degrees, etc.). Clicking Preview helps, but if you're zoomed in and the object is out of view, you have to guess where it's going. In CS5, you could press down the space bar and use the Hand Tool even while the dialog box was up. Is there a fix for this? (Sorry if this doesn't make sense...it's kind of hard to explain over a forum.)

    CS5 on Windows 7.
I can use the hand tool while pressing the Space bar while another tool including the Rotate tool is current. But I can not use the Hand tool in anyway if I'm in the process of using the Rotate tool by holding down the mouse button or dragging with it.
While the Rotate dialog is displayed I can not do anything outside of it in any way.
I can use the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll the view up or down vertically while using any of the tools including the Rotate tool but not when a tool dialog is open.
I'm curious if others experience different behavior on a Windows system .

  • How do i change the default hand tool to select tool when a document opens?  also how do i get it to open in a single page view instead of 2 pages side by side

how do i change the default hand tool to the select tool when i open a document.
how do i change the view from 2 pages to a single page?

Try setting the check boxes in Edit>Preferences>General for the following:
    - Make Hand tool select text & images
    - Make Hand tool read articles
    - Make Hand tool use mouse-wheel zooming
Adjust these as needed but does it make any difference?
