Hand Tool only one available

I started ID CS4 today and created a new doc and no matter what tools I selected, all that was available was the hand tool. Select the pen tool, rectangle tool or selection tool and the cursor would always be the hand and this was the case with several docs. Then, all of a sudden, all the tools were available again.
Anyone have this happen to them?

Is your desk as messy as mine? Sometimes I've got something leaning against the keyboard.
If it happens again, and there's no external cause, try turning Video hardware acceleration off. If it goes away, you should look for an updated video driver.

Hand tool for one layer

Using CS5 on Windows 7. I'm trying to use the hand tool to move one layer, but it will only scroll all layers together:
Scroll All Windows is unchecked (and unchanged while selected)
Layers are not grouped
Layers are not linked
Only one layer is selected at the time.
I tried all of the above both with hand tool selected, and using scroll bar with brushes selected.
Any ideas how I can use the hand tool on only one layer? I;ve never had this problem before, on this computer (with earlier versions) or any other.

I assume that you found the Move Tool, and that all is working, as you wish now.

If I don't have a previous version of an adobe product, but the only ones available of older editions are updates, can I use the update version to install the software?

I've got older systems, ones that can't handle CS6, and a budget too low to purchase a new system and your software even with a student discount. Is there any way to use an update version? I wish that all of the "Creative Suite[s] products [would] continue to be available for sale via ESD on Adobe.com"(Adobe)*, or at least most of them. I understand the need to update, and that the industry is difficult with competitors, but I wish that all of your software versions were aimed towards 32 bit systems too. There are plenty that can keep up with the operating System updates, and I only wish that you would have kept at least CS5 on support instead of shutting it down. So, if you won't accept support of older products, can you help me with this? Or is this beyond any of the software contracts that is in the company's power? I appreciate any assistance in this matter.

You can only buy CS6 and CC. Otherwise you will have to find someone willing to part with his license and run a license transfer. Though, quite frankly this doesn't really make sense. You can buy cheap laptops withe a suitable 64bit version of Windows 7/ 8 for 300 Euros. The money saved could easily be invested in a CC student plan rather than possibly trying to find an overpriced older version with the risk of getting scammed... Otherwise you can use the trials of course, but that's about it.

Basic GPU Mode only one available on ATI 5770

I am using:
intel i7 950 3.02 ghz
6 gigs tri channel ddr3
ATI 5770 1 gig card
SATA hdds 7200 RPM
windows 7 64 bit
ATI newest drivers as of 4/27/2011 (11.4)
after updating to these new drivers i am still only able to use basic GPU functionality instead of normal or even advanced. has anyone found a fix for this or know what the issue is? ive been crawling the internet since the last 2 driver releases and find it very frustrating, i would love to be able to split some of the work between myGPU and CPU etc.

There are well known problems (at least on the adobe forums) with
the 11.3 and 11.4 drvers and open gl for photoshop cs5.
The 11.2 driver is the one to try from AMD:

Hand Tool Automatically switches to Select Tool

When viewing a PDF in Acrobat X, the Hand Tool (pan) is available as long as the cursor is moving. When I stop moving the cursor, the Hand Tool switches to the Select Tool without me doing anything. I run a Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit Dell Precision computer.

What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
Sounds like maybe you have Quick Mask enabled.
Click on the Quick Mask button toward the bottom of the toolbox to get out of Quick Mask mode.

Hey! try this it is very simple and it worked for me.
1. Open photoshop
2. Go to the top left corner where the list of tools are. right under the "MAC apple"
3. hit right click and select "reset all tools"
4. restart photoshop and that should be it.

To my observation there seem to be a few different cases:
The hand tool is active. The mouse icon is a hand. Just click and drag.
In some contexts e.g. in develop doing local adjustments, the hand tool is not active but is available if you hold down the space bar. In that case, hold the space bar and drag to move. But if you just hold down the space bar and click then it will zoom in and out.
In some contexts the hand tool is not relevant. E.g. fully zoomed out. In that cast the hand tool isn't available.
It seems fairly predictable to me.

I just purchased a Macbook pro and also have an iMac. Both are OCX 10.6.6, laptop is a clone of the desktop. So why would I have the new issue of the cursor sticking as the hand tool only on the laptop?
Rebooting does not help. It seems that disconnecting the wacom and totally powering down is the only answer. Is this an Adobe issue or Mac issue? It's making me crazy.

Crashes leaving only 'Hand' tool available

I have had a problem with Elements 6.0 with 2 different computers and am wondering if anyone can guide me to resolve the issue. In the Editor I frequently only get the 'Hand' tool when selecting other tools. Sometimes it will happen on the first photo I try to edit, sometimes the second and sometimes it takes several - most often when selecting the crop tool. When it happens, I have to restart either the program or the computer. My old comp was an HP on XP; 2.6 mhz processor and 1 gb of memory. Now I use a Dell on Vista 64; quad processor @ 2.4 mhz and 8gb of memory. The same problem occurs on both.
Adobe has informed me that my support has run out. I have been dealing with the problem since the program was new and finally got tired of dealing with it. So now I'm stuck with it. When it works, it's great but I am so frustrated with it I'm ready to find another program to edit with. Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks,

Jim's suggestion is the way to go. This type of problem usually goes after deleting the saved preference files. Just start PSE to get to the Welcome screen. Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys and click Edit. Keep holding down the keys until you see a window asking Delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File? Click Yes.
Do let us know if this works.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space? Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups. I use a synology DS212 for my time machine. Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014. As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012. Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

Installing Boot Camp - There is only one partition available for Windows

I have a brand new Mac Mini. Ran Boot Camp assistant and created Windows partition - 80 GB. Then when instructed, inserted Windows XP install disc. It went through some install steps then came to screen where you chose the partition to install Windows. There was only one partition showing - Partition 1. I think that's the Mac partition, so I quit install, removed partition with Boot Camp and tried again, this time setting Windows partition at 32GB. Insert Windows install disc, same result - only Partition 1. I called Apple support, we did it all again - same result. They had me completely reformat my Mac disc with the OSX discs, then run Boot Camp assistant and set partition to 32 GB. Same result - only Partition 1 is available. The Windows install disc I am using is the same disc I used to put Windows on my son's MacBook about 9 months ago.
I need this Mac Mini to run both OS. What to do?

Use NTFS for Windows and buy Paragon NTFS for OS X
You can also try Paragon HFS for Windows
As long as you are using for data and backups, you can leave the drive as GPT too.
I would recommend strongly to always have a 2nd bootable Mac OS drive, only need 30GB partition. System maintenance. Though LIon Recovery Mode finally makes it less but not totally unneeded.
And yes you can use Windows to create a partition.
Boot Camp is too broad. Do you want or mean BC Assistant? not needed but probably possible.
MBR has trouble with 3TB drives.

Problem: Orbit Camera Tool Only Rotates One Axis

Hey forum, please forgive the newbee question. I just upgraded to motion 4 and noticed that in a 3D project the orbit tool only swivels the view in one axis (I cannot tilt the view).
I just opened a new project. Inserted an object. Created a camera. Switched to 3D. Choose the top view from the compass. Clicked and held on the 'orbit camera' in the top right... no 3D axis rotation (same protocol works perfectly in motion 3 with full 3D perspective rotation).
Guessing I am missing something really simple... Any thoughts?

That's how it works now. If you want to orbit on multiple axes, you need to be in an Active Camera or Perspective view.

Why is there only one phone available? Where can I get it?

I arrived at the main site for Firefox by typing www.getfirefox.com in the address bar of my Firefox browser, because I wanted to see if I have the latest version of Firefox. I saw the message that says, "Congratulations, you have the latest version!" Then I saw there is a Firefox OS, so I clicked on that. I eventually followed the link to get a Firefox OS phone, but to no avail. The eBay listing is expired. Yay!
Finally I got to the page that lists, with pictures, the various Firefox OS phones. Only one says it is available, and when I click on that one, to try to get it, I get to a similar page at eBay, where it says the listing has expired. Wow. This doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the security of Firefox. I wonder why it told me that I have the latest version of the Firefox browser installed, when mine is 31.0 and the latest is 33.0.1, and if there is only one Firefox OS device available, and the link on the Firefox site takes me to an expired eBay listing, I don't think I'll be trying to get a Firefox OS device any time soon.
Does anyone here have any suggestions for me?

No tool is working, only the hand tool... why?

I already used Illustrator but I'm quite new to it. Today I wanted tomodify an image I saved 2 days ago.
But I cannot do anything on it.. even if I select a tool on the tools panel when I'm with the mouse on the image only the hand toola appears... why?
What can I do? If I try to make a new document nothing changes... same problem!

Without system information nobody can even begin. this could be anything from a defective keyboard to a faulty system driver to language-related issues with key input mapping.
