Handheld GPS for Nokia N8

Hello,
I have a Nokia N8 and would like to know if there is any free or commercial software to turn the phone into a powerful GPS handheld. I am not looking for a navigation software .
Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure ANY phone can do what you are looking for.
Both Nokia and Android I know provide electronic maps, for both navigation and saving tracks (if by tracks you mean the routes you've walked past). Google Maps has plug-ins that allow you to measure distances between two areas, and so does Ovi Maps (a straight line distance calculation via Walk mode).
However please note that I am not sure I understand your english, but what I understand when you say "mapping" is that you want to make/chart your own maps, which is not possible on Nokia.
It is difficult to state if it can do what you want basically because you dont list down features that you want. Obviously though, phones cannot compete really with the real things (a phone cannot completely replace a mobile computer, a digital camera or a true GPS device like what you are looking for), but they can also do a number of features. Saying only "mapping" and "make like a handheld GPS" is quite vague. It can do some features of a handheld GPS, but you have to elaborate on what exact features you need for us to answer what applications you need on either a Nokia or a Droid to help you.
If you find my post helpful please click the green star on the left under the avatar. Thanks.

Have you checked the Nokia map application is compatible with external an GPS? That's only around £50 for a 3 year subscription to turn-by-turn, which is actually not too bad a deal compared with TomTom and Route66.
Alternatively, the two best know products are TomTom and Route66. If you're planning to use them in the UK only, then I believe (I've never tried it) that TomTom is a better product.
If you're planning to use the GPS in Europe, then (IMO) you have to go with Route66 rather than TomTom as TomTom's European bundle only includes City-to-City directions. To my mind, that's worse than useless: it helps you on the easy bits (the motorways) then gives up the minute you actually need it, namely in towns.
I have the Route66 Europe bundle and it has full coverage for the countries it includes.
Route66 works very well on my N80 and was easy to install. There are quite a few posts on here from people who've had trouble getting TomTom up and running, but once it's working I believe it does a good job.
I ordered Route66 direct from www.66.com which seemed to have the best deal at the time.Message Edited by patc on 28-Jun-200704:08 PM

  • Questions on handheld GPS systems

Hello!  My sister and I are preparing to go to the Uk in two weeks, I know next to nothing about the GPS handheld system, but the following is what I would like to have, if it’s possible, or at least help in determining what the best product is. (also, which is the best board topic for me to post this under?, I didn't see a GPS option to choose from)
I primarily want something that will when we are walking around London, and other English cities to help us find the places we want to go to specifically. Also, the nearest tube station, or restaurant, or if we could just type in “Westminster Abbey” and have the GPS talk to us on how to get us there and to show us specific street maps. So my question is, does something like this exist? What is the best one to buy? Do I have to buy additional download maps, or can I just buy one thing with everything on it? Other things that would be great to have, but probably not possible are:
Does the GPS have internet access? Can I check email and other websites with it?
The handheld GPS, can I use it in the car here in the US when I’m done with my UK traveling?
Will the GPS actually “talk” to me, or have written directions, or both?
My understanding is that it can use 2AA batteries, so I won’t need to charge it, correct?
The website says that battery life is 16 hours, but other things I’m reading implies it is less?
With the above information, is the Garmin Oregon 450 or the Garmin Oregon 450t better? Is there a cheaper option that will accomplish what I need? I don’t really care about geocaching etc, I just want something to help me not get lost. :-) And ideally use in the car when I get back to the US, but even that’s not a big deal.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Are we Beta testing the N97 for Nokia?

Because if i was given this as a beta release i would have told them what i thought, the current launch version on the N97 with V10 firmware is barely an Alpha release, this phone was a rush job thrown out on the market to coincide with the launch of the iphone 3Gs.
This is my fourth N series, N80, N95, N95 8gb (the best N series yet), and now this N97 what should be Nokia's flagship, but being stripped of apps and filled with Trial versions to please the accountants at Nokia.
Day one and it locked up twice, corrupted my contacts when synced with OVI, and ran down to less than 4mb on the C drive, day 2 i found the GPS was not working, it was a joke, walking down the road under a clear sky and it could not hold a signal lock, driving was worse barely holding a signal for a few seconds and as for sitting spinning it round for an age to get the compass to work........forget it id rather be lost than look like a **bleep**.
Deleting apps and reinstalling them on the mass memory frees up some space, but why should we have to do this, the whole phone is badly thought out and configured.
Soon after the stylus supplied with the phone and attached to the phones only tie point scratched my screen, what was wrong with a rear cover with a bump and a thin PDA style stylus, no not good enough for Nokia, a fat thing on a string will do for them.
New Firmware release 4 days after UK launch and still not available to most users as it has not been network approved yet, 3 network say its Nokia's job and they are delaying things, Nokia say its the networks delay. Come on if it was needed that quickly why leave most of your customers waiting, or just get to work on a layered OS with a standardised core with a network layer, so everyone can have the updated without waiting.
4 weeks in on this phone, i too have the scratched camera lens, still No working GPS, and having some good negotiations with Three to try to reverse the contact upgrade, as i don't think another N97 will last any longer than this one.
I see Nokia spending Millions on punting the N97, TV, Billboards, Net adds, why push so hard on what is a sub standard product, could you imagine Joe public trying to free off some memory by moving apps, tell the care centres to brace themselves the N97 flood will be coming their way.
What next, well if 3 don't cancel the upgrade, then Nokia will have to fix my phone again and again and again untill it works as advertised, in the mean time i am off to get in touch with watchdog so they can let Joe Public know what to expect from an N97.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't believe we're beta testing the N97 for Nokia. Beta testing suggests it is in a state prior to production. Nokia's track record (at least to me) seems that leading edge phones never reach a stable plateau.
What I believe happens is the phone is released and remains unstable until they sort of perfect the platform, then a new handset is released bringing a whole new world of bugs and problems and so the cycle continues.
By the time the phone is suitable for every day use it is, by today's technological stance, ancient and the damage has already been done to the reputation.
S40 phones seem to fare much better, mainly because it is much more widely used within Nokia. S60 is up against some fine competition from vendors who will rush fixes out.. Nokia only ever seems to rush phones out. It isn't the same and it shows (see their forcast for the next 6 months)
I honestly would not be surprised if this flagship phone limps on in a partially functional state until it is superceeded by a budget blackberry clone.
Sad? Very! Am I being cynical, or telling it like it is.
I'd be real interested to know if any exec at Nokia used the N97 in the weeks before it was released.. Not that I'm a fan, but we all know Stevie J used an iphone long before it was released.. I kind of get the impression they must all use very basic "corporate" s40 handsets and assume their flagship product must be of the same calibre.
Next release, why not give 100 people N97 for testing, real testing.  It seems Nokias quality assurance team is out of touch with what a $700 handset demands.. ooooh, I gasp in awe at your 30 MB of free capactity when you remove ALL the applications you can. (It's like having a 2TB hard drive in a computer and continuing to boot from a floppy)
I appreciate there are product time lines to meet, but if Nokia were aiming to compete with the likes of the pre, iphone and the various android handsets (not even mentioning windows mobile) rushing out a phone like this was very wide of the mark. Concept wise, the N97 is a great design.. the implementation of both the hardware and software just isn't going to cut it in todays market..
(but this is what they want? you'll get bored with the handset and buy a replacement! yeay!)

  • GPS /MAPS Nokia n95

    Hey, I Got N95,
My MAPS And GPS Ect Dont Seem To Be Picking Upo Anything, They Just Ask For Bluetooth even when i connect to my WLAN nothing happens?
Do i need to download anything?
    Thanks.

    Hi joshdaw
I don't think that your mate reformatted phone before giving it to you and it still has some of his chosen settings rather than default one's, as it sounds as if device looking for an external GPS rather than using internal one of your N95.
If you go to Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Personalization - now scroll down to bottom of screen and below "Factory settings" there is "Positioning" - in "Positioning methods" there should a red tick beside Assisted GPS, Internal GPS and Network based. In default setitngs there is NO tick beside Bluetooth GPS.
You would also need to define an Access point for Nokia Maps albeit either your GPRS network connection or WLAN.

I am using nokia 1200 data cable and its not connecting to my nokia 1680 classic phone. I have installed the latest nokia pc suite but still it cant detect the phone.

I have the usb data cable for nokia N1200 Series.Does it works with Nokia 1680 classic and what driver should I use and install ?

    Hi,
Have you checked the Connectivity? If the device connects on wrong type of usb connection, the PC Suite cannot access the device.
Choose Settings>Connectivity>USB data cable> PC Suite from your handheld.
Should work, if the menu-line is correct. I'm running a 5310 on S40 with firmware version 05.81.

  • How to get money back for Nokia n97?

     Hi Guys!
I gave up with Nokia N97!!! I have a lot of problems with it. All of them are known. While this 2,5 months of using the device I was so **bleep** off and felt very uncomfortable while using it! Is that what we paid $700 for?? To see how good it is in the official video commercial and how damn SLOW, buggy and how bad the hardware is? I waited for software update and was hoping to see nice and fast device, oh! and working GPS! Instead - it's still the same "smart" which is most worse on nokia market. That's enough!
So now I have this question: How to get money back for Nokia n97 after 2,5 months of usage? or maybe exchange to n900? I will call to customer care center soon but maybe  someone of you have done this already and you can give some tips?
     Thank You!
     Cheers

  • Feedback for nokia repairs

is there some sort of feedback service for nokia repairs?
    is there an evaluation form?
I returned my n97 for 3 main reasons, scratched lens, gps not working and primarily and any call on 3G at 900Mhz, was of a quality so low that people literally could never understand what I was saying. Aswell as those 3 main reasons i reported that the phone would crash, freeze, or restart on a daily basis.
This was my experience... with nokia care
1st time they returned my handset and told me it was fine, they reinstalled the firmware, which I was clear I had already done myself.
2nd time they returned my handset, this time flashed to v11 firmware insisting that call qulaity was fine, before I sent it off i was very clear they need to test 900Mhz 3G as it is ONLY this that is faulty (which is what they have in my home town, repair centre is in 2100mhz area) (it already had v12 on it when i sent it off) (fixed lens though)
3rd time I insisted I wanted a new handset, or i would be talking to fair trading. they replaced with someone elses handset (and left some of the old persons settings such as internet profiles on it), (also once again has a scratched lens), but it fixed the call issues. gps is still dodgy as. This phone had someones own purchased screen protector on it, and also had very dirty keyboard and arrows from heavy use with dirty hands. wheras the one I sent away was in 'as new' condition.
So far I have hung onto this phone simply because each time i did this it was AT LEAST a week without my phone, that i am paying through the nose for, and each time it comes back I have to restore my phone and reinstall everything (I also discovered that backups made with the ovi suite beta cannot restore)
I am one very unhappy customer, and I would like to share my experience with nokia repairs via some sort of feedback, aswell as with nokia customers. I beleive that it is only fair that the company receives negative attention when they treat their customers so badly.

    Alex... i presume.
I have a similar story as to my 'local' repair centre (Australia too) a couple of years ago and yes I was quite unhappy, although I did eventually (3 times) get the phone replaced.
As for my Carrier (Optus) they are very helpful and prompt, however they were unable to fix a very simple issue that a Local shop fixed in less than 3 days!  Firmware issue - dead phone.  So in reality... you are 'stuffed' either way!
In 17 years, I have only ever owned 1 phone branded differently to a Nokia but I am starting to think they will not have my next sale.
As for this N97... how bad is some of the things on it?
No office doc reading software unless you buy the software extra?
I have only ever sent 20 sms's according to the Menu heading but inside there are many more than that and the number never changes!
Now I have a Mass Memory Error, that is very annoying and I guess another fight is coming up between the Carrier and Nokia?
Good job I have a good lawyer friend, because I might need I this time!

  • Comments for Nokia Ovi Suite

I just got my new C7 several days ago and started to experience this nice smartphone. I am using the software Nokia Ovi Suite to download maps for C7 which is helpful.
In geernal, this software feels like iTure for Mac products. I have some suggestions to improve it as following:
    1) I hope to download maps on the computer by Ovi Suite, and then transfer them to the cell phone.  If I can do so, I do not need to connect cell phone with the computer for a long time and I can quickly update and delete the maps in the cell phone by local map files on the computer.
    2) I hope to use Ovi Suite to mange pictures, videos and others. Not only copy files from the cell phone but also append the files into the phone. The best way would be use the Ovi Suite as a library and synchronize it with the cell phone.

As this S40 device does not have embedded GPS, positioning based upon cell tower triangulation would not be accurate enough.

  • No batteries for Nokia Lumia 710?

I am in Perth, Western Australia and I am one unhappy customer
Last Friday I went to Battery World to get a spare battery for my new Nokia Lumia 710 as I'm travelling overseas.
They don't have them. I phoned JB HIFI as I bought the phone from them. They don't have them. On Saturday I phoned Nokia Care. They said they had a shop at Morley (quite a distance from me). They also said go to JB HIFI (I told them they don’t have batteries), **bleep** Smith, Harvey Norman or Telechoice. I went to each of these, they don’t have them and never have, nor did they give any indication that they ever would have them.
I went to the Telstra Shop. The chap kindly looked up the address for Nokia Customer Care here in Morley, Perth, Australia – he commented that I could not phone them because their phone number was no longer on the website. Therefore there was no way of my checking that they had a battery before I went there. I drove quite a distance to Morley. When I eventually found the business I was greeted with Business Hours 09:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday.
When I returned home I phoned Nokia Customer Care. I told them I had driven to the business and it was shut and it would have been nice to have been told that before I drove there. They told me that’s quite right they are not open on Saturdays. I was once again told to go to JB HIFI, **bleep** Smith, Harvey Norman, Telechoice. I told them they had already told me that and I had already established and told Nokia Customer Care that they did not have batteries and never had them.
I was told they would send through a query (?to God) and I would receive an SMS in 24-48 business hours as to whether there was a battery available at Nokia Customer Care. Today I received a voice mail telling me that there are no batteries available at Nokia Customer Care at Morley. Once again I am told to go to JB HIFI, **bleep**  Smith, Harvey Norman, Telechoice.
I feel like I have been sold a phone for which there are no batteries. With every other mobile phone I have owned I have always had a spare battery, especially when travelling overseas. No wonder it was “cheap”.
I am now faced with travelling overseas with a phone for which there is no possibility of purchasing a spare battery.
I sincerely hope that no-one is buying these phones to run their business with.
I am extremely disappointed and I would advise that nobody purchases this product. Which is a shame since I was happy with the product. It simply never occurred to me that there were no replacement batteries for this product. If I had known that I would not have purchased it.

    Hi rednomad,
Thanks for your contribution and thanks for posting.
Sorry to hear you are having a hard time finding an additional battery for your Lumia 710. The Lumia 710 uses the BP-3L battery which should be available through any Nokia Care Point. A list of Nokia Care Points in Perth can be found here. If the battery is not available they should be able to order one for you.
Also if you search for 'Nokia Lumia 710 Battery BP-3L' on the web you will find a number of sources within Australia which will be able to provide you with this battery model. Make sure though you buy an original Nokia battery.
    Hope this helps,
