Handing over site files to client: absolutely necessary?

I recently had a client ask me for the "access code" to his site; I told him such a thing didn't exist and if he wanted to update his own site he could purchase a CMS. While Contribute is another option, it is money detoured from me to Adobe, notwithstanding repairing broken sites. My question is, since web design is a service, not a product, is it absolutely necessary to hand over the site files to the client? I don't think a client can access a site using an open source FTP client such as Filezilla without 777 permissions, and I refuse to give these for security reasons.... Does anyone stipulate this in the web development contract or is it merely understood?...

Unless otherwise stipulated, I consider my client to be the owner of the finished files for the web site.
But I suspect this may be a hosting issue. There are a lot of commercials on the radio advertising hosting for only $4.50. When I hear these radio spots, I think, "I wonder if my clients are going to get any ideas." The ones I have heard came from GoDaddy. There's no question in my mind that if one of my server-illiterate clients every tried to do their own hosting with GoDaddy, it would turn out to be a nightmare for them.
Recently, I received an email from a client that told me that she got a really good offer for hosting. I told her that her hosting with me included basic maintenance and this:
"... you are saving money if you host it yourself as long as you have the proper software to upload your files and then you might need other software to make any changes to your web site or pay a web design company to do it. You also need to know a little about web servers. I suspect the hosting that you are being offered is by a hosting company that is just renting you space on a server but not actually doing any work for you—you will have to do everything yourself. So, it’s really not the same web hosting that we do, but if you want to switch over, I will send you the FTP information when you are ready so you can download your files from my server."
She ended up sticking with me.

  • Handing over DW site files to client

I am working on a site for a lawyer who is a veritable pain
in the @$$ and was wondering if I should actually hand over the DW
site files upon completion of the project (even though I will be
hosting). I've read in quite a few places that doing so enables the
state to charge sales tax (good vs. service), as you are
effectively providing someone with a software application. Any
    thoughts...?

Well...what you could do is become a reseller of Adobe, sell
    him a copy of
DW, and show him how to "get" the files.
When he goes in to modify and needs to have everything
    corrected...job

  • ICI WSDL Files and logon Information handed over

    Hello,
We need to integrate a couple of call-centers, each working with its own telephone switch into one CRM-System.
Thus we plan to develop a specific ICI-adapter which connects the CRM to all switches.
To start we need the WSDL files for the ICI-descriptions, but cannot find them.
Can anybody help me, about where to find these WSDL files?
Also I wonder if the logon process from the CRM-IC hands over some site information to Adapter, so that he knows with which switch the agent is linked.
    Thanks for your help

  • Java applet writes to file on client, no signing necessary

    Hi,
I wonder if this is a feature or bug:
I download and execute in my browser an unsigned applet/jar myCharts.jar from server. The applet references classes from package org.jfree.chart, which are not packed in myCharts.jar downloaded from server, but are locally stored on client in jre/lib/ext/jfreechart.jar (and therefore JVM running the applet loads and uses these local classes from local jar).
The applet can write the file to client disk without any problem using classes from locally loaded jfreechart.jar. If I merge both jars into a big one and load it through network, file write access is forbidden.
I am using JRE 1.5.0.3 for Windows and default java_policy file with 2      permissions added:
    permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "accessDeclaredMembers";
    permission java.lang.reflect.ReflectPermission "suppressAccessChecks";
Is it a bug, or feature ?
According to my opinion these 2 permissions should not result in applet ability to write files using locally loaded classes.
    Thanks for your answer

In short, you cannot write to a server without help from servier-side software such as a servlet, cgi, ASP, etc.
If you go with something like an Oracle database on your server, it's a non-issue because the seucirty aspects are taken care of for you.

  • DW 4 not seeing GoLive .site file!

I have several sites created in GoLive 7. I downloaded the GoLive 9 free trial, brought them over into GL9. Then I did the "Convert Site to New Structure" command as I have seen suggested. Downloaded the GoLive to DW migration extension and installed it. So far so good.
But when I go to Import GoLive Site, and navigate to the folder where the site file is (there are actually several, only one is the current one), Dreamweaver does not "see" the .site files, even though when I look in the window in explorer, they are there. All I see are the web-content, web-data, and web-settings folders, but no .site files at all.

This is an issue that I have never come across before. You're
    using a
non-standard filename extension, so it doesn't particularly
    surprise me
that Dreamweaver ignored it. Have you tried entering
    .properties in the
list of filename extensions, as I suggested? If that works,
    your problem
is solved. All that's needed is for the documentation to be
    made more
    explicit.
On the other hand, if your filename extension is likely to be
    in
widespread use, perhaps it's something that should be added
    to the
standard list of files that Dreamweaver handles. Submit a
    feature
    request to the Dreamweaver team.

  • Losing Mouse "hand" over buttons when publish for Web.

    Hi,
I'm new to Flash. I'm publishing a web-site and I lose the "Hand" icon for the mouse over buttons after I publish and run the HTML=>Swf files from the Browser. When I "Test the movie" from flash I see the "Hand" over buttons just fine.
Is there a publish setting that I'm missing which allows the hand to remain?
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi, Had to work yesterday.
At the moment I'm running/testing locally  (which may be the problem) from a flash secure directory on my desktop. So no link sorry.
I think I need to look into setting up a test service with Yahoo or something. Any suggestions? I'm not really sure how to upload my completed website (.html and .swf files) to a service. That's a different topic/question. Any help along those lines is greatly appreciated.
Anyway, I'm using safari 5.1.7 on my IMac. and Safari 6.0.3 on my Mac Pro. and Firefox 21.0 (primarily) or Internel Explorer (rarely) on my "windows" laptop.    The "Hand" works on all of these (files local to the respective computer) except the IMAC Safari 5.1.7 flash player 12.0 combination, which was my first test environment scenerio.
I'm planning to do two things.
    1) Update my IMAC to Safari 6.0.
    2) Set up a test area with a service provider. This in itself may resolve the issue for the Safari 5.1.7. At least I'll be testing in a "real world" environment.
So, thank you for your help with this. I think we can call it solved. If my testing on a true server shows the same results then I may shoot out another question. I think it is a nice goal to have our web site creations run on all platforms and browser comibations but is that realistic? If we test on as many combinations of the most recent software releases as we can with reasonable success what more can we do? I'd like to hear you opinion. Feel free to sent me an email.
Would you like me to open a new question/discussion regarding the help finding and uploading files to a service provider?
    Thanks again,
    Jeff

  • Copy file from client machine to unix db server

    Dear all,

  • DW CS5 "Get" bug in expanded site files view

    Hi,
I just installed the CS5 Design Premium trial and have been playing with Dreamweaver. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the following issue...
When in expanded site files view (showing both local and remote), selecting a file on the REMOTE site and trying to "Get" the file does not download the remote file. It instead tries to retrieve the remote copy of the file(s) selected in the LOCAL file list pane.
If no file is selected on the local file list, pressing "Get" after selecting a REMOTE file from the list brings up the "Are you sure you wish to get the entire site" dialog.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Open expanded site files view (local and remote)
    2. Click on a file in the remote file list. For testing purposes, click on a file in the LOCAL list first, then select a remote file
    3. Click the Get button or right click on the remote file and choose Get.
DW should download the selected REMOTE file if that was the last selected file prior to executing the Get command. (this is the action that DW CS3/CS4 does)
I have submitted this bug in the official Adobe bug reporting system, but I'm curious as to whether others can reproduce this bug.
    Thanks

@Murray, I think I have discovered exactly where the bug lies and how you may be able to reproduce it yourself...
@quantumlight - do you happen to have your Site Files panel UNDOCKED and in its own floating panel??
I work with Dreamweaver on a dual/multi monitor setup. I have my split design/code view on one screen, and the site files and code inspector on a DETACHED Files panel on the 2nd monitor.
I did a full DW prefences reset and everything went back to the factory setting, with the Files panel docked to the right hand side of the DW program window. With it docked, I opened the expanded/split site files view and IT WORKED NORMALLY as is expected.
However, as soon as I UNDOCKED the Files panel into its own floating panel and expanded the file view, the bug appeared and selecting a REMOTE FILE and pressing Get, asked to either download a copy of the selected LOCAL file, or if no local file is selected it asks "Are you sure you want to get the entire site"
Redocking the Files panel back to its original position makes the bug disappear.
I have tested this on two Windows 7 machines and one Mac Snow Leopard machine, both with the CS5 11.0.2 updates installed.
It seems it's a Windows version only bug as both Win7 machines produced the bug, with the Mac machine NOT presenting the bug in either docked or floating panel state.
Hopefully the Adobe DW guys see this soon and can work on fixing this bug in the next update.
Do you think i should re-submit my previous bug report with this updated discovery?

  • How to transfer site files from one computer to another?

I've got a couple sites archived on my MacBook Pro that I'd like to move over to my iMac. Is there an easy way to do this that will retain all the site settings and so that the sites will show up in the site files window as I'm used to working with? (CS4)

Yep, super easy too if you still have DW on the machine you are transferring from.
    1. Open DW on that machine, go to Site > Manage Sites > Export to create a .ste file for the site.
    2. Make a copy of the entire site folder for the site and put it on your new machine along with a copy of the .ste file.
    3. In DW on the new machine go to Site > Manage Sites > Import to import the .ste file
3a. You "may" need to relink the site's root folder under Site > Manage Sites > Edit to point to the newly copied site folder on the new machine, but all the FTP info will be there from the import

  • Open bat file on client machine using webutil

    Hi all.

I want to run a bat file on client machine using client_host function of webutil.

Now I want to execute this file from my form using webutil.
    Here is my code:

If LC$Fichier is not null Then
    :output.apri_file := LC$Fichier ;
    End if ;
    End ;
--> with this code I execute the file that I have opened
    declare

    BEGIN
         Cmd := 'cmd /c start "" "' || :output.apri_file || '"' ;
    CLIENT_HOST(cmd);

When I execute my form I have this error:

The answer in NO for both of your questions.
If I try to drag and drop the file I have error.
How can I attach an image to this post, so that you can see the error??
    Thanks,
FabrizioThis seems like a directory or OS level permission issue on the batch file, What is the error you got when you tried drag and drop the batch file in an DOS window???
I think you need to upload the image to a site and use the markup for the image, include the full URL of the uploaded file between ! (exclamation marks) something like ! http://../post.gif ! without the spaces.

  • Problem using text boxes as the "image" to drag and drop over audio file

I have been adding audio files to my page in iWeb (previous version, not '08), but I am having a problem giving them titles.
When you first drag a file from iTunes into iWeb, it provides a space for you to drag and drop a picture. The online iWeb guide also says that you can drag a text box there instead of a picture.
I created a text box with the text I would like to drop over the controller. However, it is no longer allowing me to drop the text box there. I used to be able to do this, and I don't know what I'm doing differently now. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    -- Will

foobar2000 with the ipod plugin will allow you to drag/drop FLAC files and when it syncs the ipod, it converts the FLAC files on the fly. MUCH better than dealing with the crappy iTunes interface and having to pre-convert the files. I absolutely loathe iTunes and it just gets worse and worse!

  • FTP publishing on iWeb to replace existing site - files not appearing.

On iWeb, I used FTP publishing to replace my existing site files, then deleted the original files but not only has the new site files not appeared in my public html folder but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Founderror was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
That's an indication that the index.html file that is created alongside the site folder by iWeb is missing.
Try publishing your site to a folder on your hard driive and use a 3rd part ftp client like the free  Cyberduck to upload the site folder and the index.html file.
Cyberduck or Transmit will let you view your server folder in a Finder like window where you can see which files are missing.

  • Site files moved to new (identical) server; now iWeb gives "Publish Error"

Our school district just replaced the web server where our teachers publish iWeb sites. All user accounts, passwords, IP addresses, and content moved over just fine, but now when teachers try to publish updates to their existing sites on the new server, iWeb throws a "Publish Error: Unable to communicate with FTP server..." error. Test Connection in the publishing settings works fine, as does logging in to the server using an FTP application, so we know the user accounts are okay.
An interesting twist: I published my existing site (that was experiencing this issue) to a local folder on my desktop, and used a standalone FTP application to upload and replace my iWeb site files manually; when I went in and set the iWeb publishing settings back to FTP server, it was again able to publish updates to the site without issue.
We're looking into a permissions problem on the files that were moved from the old server but so far have not been able to find any differences.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on? We have a couple hundred people this is affecting and if it's something we can fix on the back-end instead of having to manually replace all of those site files, that would be a great thing!

The only time that I had to move a bunch of sites to a new server I was instructed by tech support to download all the sites/files and upload them to the new location.
I would assume that, if you don't do this, the permissions could get messed up.
My hosting service uses Webshell4 to manage files on the server. To change permissions you need to select the site folder in Webshell4 and click the "CHMOD" button to get a window that allows you to do this.
Read permissions should be checked for User, Group and Other.
Write permissions would normally be set for User only.
You could try this with one site to see if this is what's required but your hosting service tech support should really help you with this. That's what they are there for.

  • PHP Upload script for ZIP/SIT files

Be careful. These informations can be faked or might not be
    available at
all. I can easily upload a PHP script as "image/jpeg". If the
    file ends
up in a public directory within the document root, I can
    execute it and
then have a look at the entire server ...
Relying on the content type or file extension is a huge
    security hole!
I'm quite surprised that W3Schools publishes such an insecure
    script.
To make sure that an uploaded file is really of the type you
    expect, you
must look at its content! For images you can use
    getimagesize(), which
will also return the type if it's a valid image. For other
    types you
have to use other libs or external tools. On a *nix machine
    you could
execute the shell command 'file' for example, which
    recognizes quite a
    lot of different file types.

  • Combining .sites files

I have created a whole bunch of different sites using iWebSites but I have two that really make sense to have in one .sites file for ease of editing/transferring info back and forth. Is there a way to combine two .sites files?

    Hey varkgirl...
How are you? You know, I don't think that there is an easy way to combine sites in different Domain files. I've been thinking about this, too, but I can't think of any elegant method. You'll probably end up having to recreate your pages in the one Domain file, but I guess as consolation, it should be pretty easy to dig out all the graphics and text and stuff from the domain or from the published site files to drop back into the new site in iWeb. I like to think of this process more as "re-assembling" rather than recreating or starting over.
    Good luck to you!
