Handles disappear

Sometimes, when working on an Illustrator document the handles of (all) objects disappear. Neither clicking with the select- nor the direct selection tool will show handles. Rebooting doesn't solve the problem. It seems to be some kind of setting that I'm accidentally activating, but I can't find my way back. Or is it a bug? I'm working with CS3, Win XP. Any suggestions?

Dirk,
we are not just talking about Hide/Show Edges (Ctrl+H/Cmd+H) here, are we?

It's simple... I want the Illustrator pen tool to ALWAYS make corner annchor points and NEVER smooth.  Right now I have to convert every single one of them, or I have to do a work around every time I draw a line and make one of the handles disappear.  Is there some simple setting out there that will just "make it so?"@

The video I am watching this guy is just dragging every line to make curves.  And every anchor point is a corner.  He is not switching back and forth between the pen and the anchor points tool, and he is not using the convert points tool.  He draws a curved line and starts another straight line only to curve it with a click and a drag.  It is super efficient, and I could save a world of time if I could figure out what he is doing.

  • Navigation Pane will not expand (right-hand vertical resize handle disappears)

Navigation Pane will not expand (right-hand vertical resize handle disappears)
We have confirmed this is present in both Access 2007 and Access 2010.
    Recreate:
If a user drags the naviagtion bar right hand side resize vertical handle so the only the "All.." is displayed in the top of the navigation bar title and releases the mouse button, the resize handle disappears.
    Resolution:
It seems the only way to resolve the issue is to restart Access.
The same action is not apparent in other MS office applications (eg Outlook).   Is this a known bug ?  Is there a workaround or hotfix ?
I have found only one other reference to this:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/accessdev/thread/fac92f2a-f0f3-4739-a576-f23dfb75cdb8
    Thanks for any feedback.

Another way (F11 and Search Bar workarounds didn't work for me) ... save in Access 2002/2003 (mdb) format, close.  Open in Access 2002/2003 (mdb), I could "find" the grab bar and expand the navigation bar.  Save in Access 2007/2013
format.  Open in Access 2007/2013 format - the bar stayed expanded.  Your mileage may vary.

  • Bug in Studio 10.3 - Automatic Handler disappears in horizontal layout

In process model, clicking on "Layout" button causes "Automatic Handler" swimlane to disappear.
I've observed this only when using horizontal layout.
    1. Create process
    2. add automatic activity to automaic handler swimlane
    3. add new swimlane "clerk"
    4. Create global ctearion into swimlane clerk
    5. Click "Layout" button
    6. Done: all stuff is now in swimlane clerk, which is the only swimlane left.
Looks like a bug to me.

  • Motion path handles disappeared

I've been working in After Effects for a little while now and am having some of my motion path handles not appear when they should. I'm working on a slideshow and they seem to appear for all of my other pictures. What I do is go in between the start and end point of a path and move my picture away from the main (straight) motion path I created which usually creates a new keyframe on my timeline and inserts a point on my motion path with two handles I can adjust to make the path curved. This time it just creates the point on the motion path and keyframe, but doesn't allow me to make the path curved. It's really strange and has happened to me before. The way I solved it earlier was to remove the point where it wasn't working and insert a new one, and it would magically turn on, but that doesn't seem to work now.
I've only been able to find one other person that had a similar problem online, which was solved by going to view---->view options and enabling 'view handles'. This didn't solve my problem so I figured I would ask on here. Thanks in advance for the help.

That worked, although it's a few extra steps that I shouldn't have to take (and haven't prior to this). I held down alt by mistake at first and it only gave me one handle, but if I just tap alt and then click--->drag away from the point, it does provide me with a handle in each direction, which is what I was ultimately needing. Here is a screenshot of that layer although it's pretty standard.
When I selected a keyframe that was in between the beginning and end of the motion path, pressed G, and then hit alt it does exactly what I want it to, but usually it adds the handles automatically, and want it to always. This extra step is very annoying because I'm dealing with a lot of motion paths and plan to in the future as well.

  • Why do crop box and handles disappear after carrying out a crop?

Following a crop (with 'delete cropped pixels' box unchecked) I have to go out of the crop command and back into crop to see the crop bounding box and handles - this was not necessary on previous versions of Ps.  Is there a setting I can change to avoid this problem ?  I am using Ps CC 2014 on a Macbook Pro (the same problem occurred on Ps CC)

All you have to do is click on the edge of the image to bring back the handles, or click-drag to make a new crop.  You don't have to quite the tool.

  • Anchor Points and handles disappearing in Illustrator CC – Windows 8

    Hi,
    I'm hoping someone can help.
This is becoming a consistently re-occurring issue for me, and it's not specific to any particular file.
The bounding box is visible, so I have a blue outline and blue "anchor points" at the end of each line, and I can even use the new CC round edges option, however I have no anchor points to do any resizing, and I can't hover the black arrow tool just outside the edges of a shape to quickly rotate it.
It's not a case of going into preferences/view and turning on bounding box and/or show anchor points (Ctrl+Shft+B) nor (Ctrl+H). This seems to happen to me randomly but consistently, on new or existing files, and there's no rhyme or reason to when it happens. I could have been working on the file for 2 hours or 2 minutes and it can just kick in.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Probably worth noting that I also have CC on my Mac and I tend not to see the issue, it happens occasionally but nowhere near to the same extent as the Windows version, and I've experienced the issue occasional on older versions of Illustrator also, so it just seems like an inherent issue on these versions rather than the inhibiting barrier it's proving to be on CC Windows.

  • Disappearing seekbar handle when in fullscreen

Iam currently working on a flash player which has a menu-movieclip which is a child of the FLVPlayback object.
This allows the menu to go into fullscreen mode with the player itself.
There has however arose a complication when going into fullscreen: the handles, both the seekbar and the volumebar handles disappears.
They wont even come back if you exit fullscreen mode.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem? i am running Flash CS4 and AS3
    Thanks in advance

I'm sorry, it seems I spoke too soon. The original problem is back: Black stripe at the bottom of the screen. :-(

  • Why does my anchor handles keep disappearing?

This is literally driving me mad.  When I change something via convert anchor tool and then release, the handles disappear and when I click back on the anchor point they go back to where they were originally.  I want them to stay selected. The path has been created using the pen tool.
Another related question, is there a way to just select one of the handles when clicking an anchor point?  Whenever I click both are selected so when I move the mouse, the other handle is being manipulated too.
And another question, is there any way to stop anchor handles reverting to their original position settings when clicking to activate them?  I always have to click, then undo.

You may work on one handle only by Alt/Option+ClickDragging it; you may also retract one handle that way.
ONLY IF you're using the white pointer. Doing that with the Convert tool will duplicate the segment. Again, Nicola, don't use the Convert tool to select points. That's what you're tripping over.
Funny name for it, show edges...how are you meant to work out what it means from that name?  With pencil and paintbrush you double click and choose keep path selected, you'd think it'd be the same.
Nicola, you need to spend some serious time in the documentation.
The Keep Selected option for the Pencil and Brush tools is an entirely different function. It determines whether a path you draw with the tool REMAINS SELECTED after you mouseup.
The Show/Hide Edges option in the View menu determines whether a path's selection edges DISPLAY when it IS selected.
I'm certainly not defending Illustrator's awful interface design; I'm just telling you how it is. (All the more reason you need to read and work through the instructions.) The Show.Hide Edges command is actually a workaround for a particularly bad aspect of Illustrator's poor design: it's insistence on displaying edges of all contents of selected Groups, Clipping Paths, etc. All those selection edges frequently get in the way, so somewhere along the way, Illustrator had to add an option to override the annoying standard behavior. This, too, is poorly done, because you really can't operate for long that way.
Other programs don't have to second-guess themselves in things so basic as selection display, because they have more sensible interfaces to begin with.

  • Edit handles not visible

I was happily editing an illustration in Illustrator (CS3) on a Mac (OS X, Leopard) when the selection handles disappeared. I can, for instance, select an object and the layers palette tells me which object is selected, but there are no selection handles on the object. I have to find them by 'braille'. It's just this one illustration. I can start a new one and the handles show up. Searching Adobe's help files have not yielded any help, although I probably have the terminology wrong. I may hve done this by hitting something wrong in my haste to finish this illustration. Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

After posting this a colleague pointed to View Show/Hide Edges, an option I had never used in 10+ yrs of using Illustrator. This took care of it. Excuse my earlier post!

  • Handles are gone in dreamweaver cc fluid

basocally my handles are gone in dreamweaver cc fluid layout and i donr seee the grid. any helpis appercated
    thsnks
    Mike

I have the SOLUTION!  Here is what has happend...
In the fluid-grid.css that you first created...
Find the class that no longer allows you to have the handles (ie. the handles disappeared from my .pageHeader class)
Add width: 100%; inside of the brackets.
    .pageHeader {
    width:100%
Save the file and go back out to Design View.  You have the handles back!!!

  • Control handles or points and warping text

The transform controls in Photoshop CS6 disappear as soon as I click on the warp mode icon, preventing me from manually warping the layer on which I am working. Oh sure, I can click on Show Transform Controls and, voila, there they are. But as soon as I click on the icon that switches me between warp and free transform, the handles disappear (no mesh either) and without them there is no way to manually warp text or images. Because this used to work perfectly in CS5, I am just a tad frustrated. None of the prebuilt warp modes involve perspective (although I understand this option is maybe, perhaps, it's possible, coming at some point in the future) I can't even get the look I'm after with any prebuilt mode.
3D doesn't offer a simple perspective tool either. Yes, it does a lot, but not what I want.
So, why do the handles disappear and how can I get them to stick when I need them?
And, yes, I do have View > Extras active. Or at least the option is checked as active.
    Thank you for any help.

PECourtejoie, That was a lot of text! I did not include most of it, but I did include anything related to the video card. I hope I included what you need. If not, I can copy the whole shebang. Thank you for all your help.

  • Control handles do not remain showing

I have show handles for multiple selected anchor points turned on, and all of the handles are showing, but as soon as I drag out a guideline the handles disappear. I was watching a tutorial video where the handles remained showing as the guidelines were dragged and snapped to points. Is this a difference between Windows and Mac versions of Illustrator?

Lock guides in the View menu. Guides are objects, so remain selected after they are created unless locked.

  • Camera randomly moves forward then backward

    Hey all,
I have a camera parented to a null that is being used for this shot. The camera zooms close to the planet very quickly, and then i wanted it to approach slowly (like a coming out of warp shot). Seems easy enough.. The camera slows down at Z position =40,000. The next keyframe is set to 41,000 so that it moves slowly forward . The problem is, the camera way overshoots the keyframe value then backs down to 41k. When i look at the graph i see that it curves up, but it does that on the  first set of keyframes as well and the camera doesn't make any unwanted movements. Does anyone know what could be going on? The keyframes are easy-eased, but i tried turning that off and the camera still did this movement.

Take a look at the path of the null you're using to drive the camera in a top view. Select the G key to select the Pen tool. Take a close look at the middle keyframe. You'll see bezier handles extending past the last keyframe. Hold down the Alt/Option key on your keybard and click on the second keyframe in the Comp panel. You'll see the Bezier handles disappear. Your bounce is not gone.
The other option is to select the keyframe in the timeline, then right click, go to Keyframe Interpolation.
    Set Spatial Interpolation to Linear.
Both do the same thing. I prefer the second Pen Tool>Convert Vertex method because I often want to adjust the Spatial interpolation, especially if there's a curve.
This happens when you have a layer moving quickly, then you move forward a few frames and move the layer a little further. If you set the starting and ending keyframe first, then back up and set the middle keyframe and adjust it's position in the comp window or the change the timing in the timeline, you almost never get this problem.

  • Site Menu page will not extend/get longer

I am adding to my Site Menu and something is awry at the bottom of the page. Because I am adding more to the page, I have to lower the rest of the page to make room for the new text. However, the page refuses to lengthen. One manifestation of this is that the last item on the text field, the Bylines site, was pushing through the footer area, becoming partially hidden rather than pushing the whole page down and maintaining total visibility. (It's visible in Safari, though.)
Just now I went to the Page inspector and brought the Footer back down to ZERO and I removed the Counter from the Footer and placed it onto the text field. I also upped the text field to 800 pixels, which oughta be enough for a Site Menu page!
Still, when I select all that I want to have lowered on the page, IT STILL REFUSES TO LOWER. I welcome any insights.

You need to increase the Content Height setting,
Lorna. I can tell you right now that your Content
Height is more like 1000-1200 as it stands. Just
compare the width of the page to the height. Imagine
a square with sides the same size as the width of the
page (which by default is 700 right?). So if you
look at your page, the length of the page obviously
extends beyond a square with 700 pixel sides.
Just keep adjusting the Content Height UP until you
see the footer move down the page.
James, wow, you were right. I set the text field to 1500 pixels and the page length visibly lengthened. I now have the Counter at the bottom of the page.
BUT WAIT! THERE IS A NEW PROBLEM! <she shrieked>
When I clicked to insert an Email Me button, it went to the bottomest bottom of the page and slipped below the bottom page boundary. You know how when Bugs Bunny was hiding behind a large rock, you could see his ears twitching and you knew that he was hiding there? Well, similarly, I saw two, maybe three handlebars to what I know is the Email me button, but when I clicked onto the handles to "grab" the button and lift if from where it should not be, those handles disappeared, not to return. Of course, I experimented to push the page down longer, using the Counter button as a bulldozer, but the page would not lengthen, probably because it reached the limit of the 1500 pixels. So I figured: If I set the text field to max out at 1500 pixels, how is it that the Email me button has slipped below that? And so I bring the issue to the Forum once again.
    So NOW what?
