Handling complex file to speed things up

I have a file of the high line park new york plan. It is in vector form available freely on their website in pdf form.
http://assets.thehighline.org/pdf/high-line-map.pdf
The problem is, that I'm doing M.Arch. in landscape and for that I am studying that park and making my college sheets in Illustrator and InDesign.
When I import the file in illustrator, it becomes very heavy and takes time to zoom in, to enlarge the details of flooring and street furniture. I'm using cs6 version of it. And after that when I import it into InDesign, the same thing happens.
When I switch to typical quality of display performance to a high quality performance, the delay is about 9 seconds, too high for me.
What I want to do is break apart this file into small rectangular chunks which can be studied for educational purposes seaprately
That would be done in illustrator using expand command. However in doing so, lot of components in the drawing get exploded and get grouped with other stuff..
any good trick to handle this complexity?
I have an i5 processor 2.6GHz-3.2Ghz and 4GB Ram, running windows 7-64 bit, ATI Sunpro graphics card - 2GB

What is the best way to crop the pdf, like reeeally crop. All stuff deleted perfectly outside the bounding box. I tried fiddling with preflight options and print production but couldn't find it. Kindly tell the exact step by step procedure.

  • Problem in handling complex CSV file

    Hi,
I am facing a strange problem in handling a complex CSV file.
The content of the file is as follows. It is getting executed through an XSD and the target is a table.
First time when the interface is executed ( for e.g session id - 19001) it is getting completed successfully.
Now when making changes in the CSV file suppose adding ( for e.g.-
    DEPT,D05,Books,ABC Store
    CUST,C01,Sayantan,[email protected]
    CUST,C02,Shubham,[email protected])
    or deleting ( for e.g.-
    CUST,C02,Sarbajit,[email protected])
and running the interface I am not getting the added D05 in the target table nor my C02 data is getting removed i.e.- the updated data in CSV file is not getting fetched and I am getting the same records as i got when i ran interface of session id 19001.
I am not getting why it is happening??
The CSV file used in session id -19001 is:

Here's what you can do to handle CSV files using HSQL.
Say the CSV file contains order data. Each order record contains data about a particular order like order number, product code, quantity, ordered by, date etc. Now lets take a hypothetical requirement which says, the user needs to know how many orders were ordered per product.
Option 1]  At the basic level, read the order file, parse each line and write the logic to get count of orders per product.
Option 2] Load this CSV file into a database like MySQL and write database queries to get the orders per product.
So where does this leave us? Have we run out of options? I am sure we would have tried & used the above two options . But I wanted a different approach. Following questions were lingering in my mind:
1] Why can’t I write SQL queries against the CSV file itself. After all it’s like any RDBMS table.
2] Why should I load the CSV file into some database before I query it?
3] Why can’t I create a database table & attach the CSV file to it?

  • Photoshop CC can't seem to handle complex/high poly count 3D Models. Will this be addressed?

    Hello all,
I am running Photoshop CC on 3 systems and having the relatively same problems on all. The source files are exported from ZBrush- .stl or .obj files that are complex and have high poly counts. The file sizes are into the hundreds of megabytes.  These are not the simple files like they show when people are using the 3D features- a racecar or simple toy rocket.
Photoshop CC doesn't seem to be able to open all the files and even when it does, the structures facings or facets don't always appear correct. I've developed a partial workaround, by merging the objects and reducing the poly count (which creates a new set of problems).
If I do get a file open, my ultimate goal is to be able to color it, add light it and render it for 2d print purposes. Again Photoshop seems to be picky- When I apply color via the airbrush tool, it usually isn't smooth. It seems to apply color by facet or facing. Same thing when I try to manually add in texture from another source file. It appears to make the detail jagged and blurry from the source file.
The appeal of using Photoshop for this process is we have people here who can do it without too much of a learning curve. Otherwise everyone else has to learn ZBrush just to color and light the models.
I've pretty much done all the troubleshooting I can and exhausted all the tools at hand. I have tried both texture painting and projections painting and all the other options. I believe the meshes are just too complicated. And if there is something incorrect in the file, such as a reversed normal, Photoshop doesn't seem to know how to deal with it. My systems have more than enough to handle the files.
Does anyone have any similar issues and is Adobe working on them in the form of a new release?
    Thanks!

Hi Everyone. Thank you for writing back. I have two 2011 imacs running intel 2.93 ghz, one with 20gb or ram and one with 16gb, both have 1tb hard drives, 1gb vram, one running os 10.6 the other 10.9. I have a 3rd computer, a PC  that notably handles the files more quickly, but still crashes if it doesn't like something from the original 3d model. This one has a 3.7ghz intel quadcore processor, 24gb of ram, 3tb hard drive, and a 4gb nvidia geforce video card, running Windows 8.1.
So the reason I make the statement about Photoshop and not about my computers, is that all the above computers can handle the original files in zbrush. All the above computers can handle the files in meshlab. With ease. But when I get to photoshop, I face long load times, crashing, and a lag using the tools within the 3d space. And sometimes it handles the models differently than it does in any other 3d program. It seems picky for lack of a better word.
When I say high poly count, I mean 4 million to 8 million. I am able to knock down the poly count in meshlab and that can help. But sometimes the files just don't want to open in Photoshop.
With all that said, it may be in something how some of the models were built, but again, Photoshop is the only one having an issue. And I have to add that I have been using Photoshop for 20 years and I absolutely love it. I am trying to make a case for my company to use it for coloring, lighting, and processing 3d models, but I just can't with the above issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chris, if you need files, I can see about getting them to you. The only real issue is the work is highly proprietary and kept under wraps. So I would need to get approval and feel comfortable that is will be protected. Thanks!

  • Error Handling in File Adapter

I have been working on a requirement where the file adapter picks up the file and gives to the BPEL for processing the data.
So, in order to do Error Handling for file adapter, i have been reading the Oracle documentation for technology adapters. In that, some of the
points which i felt valuable for my error handling when using file adapter are the uniqueMessageSeparator property, fault-policies for rejected messages,
and one of the action for rejected messages could be writing the payload to a file or invoking any other webservice.
In my composite, i have configured the file adapter as a service for reading files, and i defined the xsd using the native format builder....If i put some data like 'aaaa' in the attribute of type integer , the .csv file is being picked up and its being passed to the BPEL without any error ? I believe there should be a translation error...right...
But i am not getting the error, please tell me if anything is wrong in my xsd....
    Here is my xsd...

And for DB Adapter, there is a property called SchemaValidation, i think that is not there for File adapter, by default it will take care of validation i guess....In another composite, my file adapter is picking up the .xml file and if i put any wrong data over there, that is working fine, i am getting the translation error, but only here in the case of csv file, i am not getting the error. Experts, please help me in this regard...I am using SOA 11G
    Thanks,

    Hi Yatan,
Thanks for the reply. I did the same way, where my composite is picking up an XML file and translation error is coming. Even the fault policies are working fine, like writing to a file and even invoking other web service. Its really good that you have achieved the same thing in csv files. But the same thing i am unable to achieve when my file adapter is picking up the csv file. I really cant understand where i am doing wrong.
here is my XSD which i defined through my native builder format...

I told that the file will contain only 1 record while defining xsd and i kept a record whose values are John , Peter and akjdkjdskj.
Now if the data is like above, the file is still getting picked up without any translation error and the BPEL is getting completed successfully...
Is it possible for you to send your sample project and the csv file from which you have defined the xsd to me if you dont mind ?

  • Trying to speed things up...

    Hi
I have a Macbook pro which was bought around Nov 2009 (Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3).
I have recenlty upgraded to Lion.
I am working as a professional photographer and I spend a long time editing photos in Aperture 3 which I recently ugraded from Aperture 2.
I am having real issues with Aperture 3's speed. It works ok for about 10 minutes and then every change that I try to make causes the dreaded wheel to whirl and I have to wait for 20-30 seconds before it becomes operational again. Obviously I cannot work like this or editing will take me twice as long.
I know that Aperture has always been a 'hungry' programme that takes up a lot of the computer's capability and so I always try to shut down all other programmes whilst using Aperture.
In terms of Aperture Libraries I am working with two:
    1) an archive and is kept on an external hard drive
    2) The 'Live Library' which contains only the images I am currently working on - this is on the computer's hard drive but contacin only about 500-1000 images at any one time.
    So, my questions are:
    - how can I speed things up?
    - should I be looking to upgrade my computer and if so what to? (iMac? Mac Pro?) (will a desktop make life easier?)
Your help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Tom,
Your first problem is not enough RAM to run Lion and Aperture. Lion needs more RAM than Snow Leopard.
I would upgrade to 8GB from your current 4GB, you should see immediate improvements in speed.
I agree SSD is the way to go for your startup drive. The cost per GB, however, may limit your storage options.
If you don't use the optical drive, you can install the SSD in the optical bay, using an optibay enclosure or datadoubler.
The HD stays in the hard drive bay and is used for your data files.
Go to OWC and look over their upgrade options for your model MBP. Watch the install videos and see if you are up for doing the install yourself.

  • Adobe Air + Box2D.swc = TypeError: Error #1009 // New way to handle .swc files in Flash for iOS Apps?

    Hi,
I need your help please - I have to update one of my iOS Apps. In this App I use Box2d for a simple maze game (it's an app for kids). When I publish & test this game on my Mac it works fine. I can drag my Hero (fish) through this Maze and all collision detections, gravity etc. work perfect.
When I test it on my iPad it doesn't work. The device debugger shows this error message:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

    Line 31: loader = new CLibInit();
I guess "CLibInit" should come from the .swc file.
    The thing is:
I didn't change anything in this maze game - it seems this has to do something with the new Flash and/or Adobe Air version. Box2D.swc file is included:
It always worked like this - and it works when testing it on my Mac - but it is no longer working on my current system.
So I started my Mac from an older system (10.9.5 on an external HD) and published the App from Flash CS6 and Adobe Air 13.0 - then it suddenly worked on my iPad as before. I was able to tap an the fish and drag it arround.
The same project / app published from my current OS X 10.10 + Flash CC 2014 + Adobe Air 15.0.0.302 is not working. I always receive this Error Message - I can not drag the fish - nothing happens. And I have no idea why this happens and what else I could do. I searched the whole day for a solution but didn't find anything.
So did anything change by the way Flash and/or Air handles .swc files? Is there an other way to include: import cmodule.Box2D.* / CLibInit ?
Please - if anyone has a clue - please let me know!!
    Best regards
    Jan

    Update:
There is also an Android Version of this App. I just published and tested a new version of it on my kindle fire & Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. On both Tablets the maze works perfect. I'm able to drag the fish around etc.
Then I published this Android Version for iOS and tested it on my iPad. Again I'm getting the Error message:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

      at misc::Entity/handleAddedToStage
...and the fish is stuck - I can't drag it - nothing happens. So this error only occurs when I publish the App for iOS - as an .ipa. Did anything change in the way Air handles .swc files?
    I'm totally confused
If anybody has an idea what I could try - PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

  • What is the best way to handle .mod files in premiere pro cs4?

I recently got a JVC Everio GZ-MG130u and as I'm sure many of you are aware, it saves footage in the .mod format.
I have googled this and found quite a few different solutions, but I'm just wondering if anything has changed since some of these solutions were posted, or in other words, what is the best way at this current point in time to handle .mod files in premiere pro cs4?
As far as I know, the best thing to do is convert the .mod to .avi and then import it into premiere so it can be edited.. Is there a better way to do it than this? Also, by doing it this way, will I have separate audio and video tracks?
    Thanks.

I have just done a bit of reading, here. All of the quotes that follow are from users who have posted in that thread.
It seems that there isn't one solid answer on this subject. The thread that I linked to was started 2 years ago, and replied to just 4 ago, so it's relatively current.
I noticed a couple different interesting statements:
    posted by mmontgomery:
In the case of .MOD, you are actually getting a MPEG-2 file. The way
video files work is that there is a codec (COmpressor/DECompressor)
algorithm and a file wrapper (or extension). A JVC .MOD file is a
MPEG-2 encoded file, with a .MOD extension.
    You're faced with two
challenges, first the .MOD file type is only recognized and support by a
few applications. I think we covered some of those already. The
interesting thing about wrappers and extensions is that they can be
dealt with in a variety of ways. Sometimes all you need to do to convert
the video file to a compatible video file is to change the extension.
In the case of .MOD files that's not enough. The .MOD wrapper apparently
does a few more things than just bare a unique extension name. It
requires a slightly more complicated method to convert that file. That
is why there is supplied software and that certain third party
    applications have .MOD support.
    (posted 2 years ago)
This seems to indicate that Ann's solution of simply re-naming the extension is not good enough, unless I am mis-interpreting what she meant.
    However, another user said:
    posted by futball8:
I edit with Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. All I have to do is simply rename
the .MOD files as .MPG and then import into PP CS3. It takes a small
amount of time to conform the audio, but no file conversion is
necessary. It's a pretty slick workflow and I've never encountered any
    problems editing them this way.
    (posted 5 months ago)
One can only assume that simply re-naming the extension from .mod to .mpg works in some circumstances, and doesn't work in others. I assume it depends largely on the editing software being used. Perhaps there are still issues that futball8 was simply unaware of or never encountered.
That said, there seems to be a couple of different real solutions to this problem that I have found:
    1. Simply use an editing program that supports .mod file format. While pe7 and pe8 supposedly support the .mod format, the following should be noted:
    posted by macksgarage:
While Elements 'supports' these files, it is markedly unstable and  frequently crashes while using the files, though the application is otherwise reliable.  The solution I have arrived at is to repair the  container using ffmpeg. (see #3)
    (posted 5 months ago)
    2. Use a file conversion utility of your choice that will covert .mod to .avi, or another desired format. Import the resulting .avi file into premiere pro cs4.
    3. Use FFmpeg. This seems to be the best solution as it does not convert any audio or video:
    posted by macksgarae:
If you are not familiar with ffmpeg, it may be a bit of a bear to
learn, but it's not only useful for this, but functions as a video swiss
army knife useful for splicing, muxing/demuxing, and rendering just
about any format into just about any other format.
ffmpeg is an open source project from the linux world, but it has
been ported and is supported on windows.  Fetch it here and place it somewhere handy
    on your system.
To rewrite the container into a nice, standards compliant .mpg file
that doesn't make applications die, WITHOUT rerendering video or audio
    itself, I use this command.
    ffmpeg -i INFILE.MOD  -acodec copy - vcodec copy OUTFILE.mpg
This not only renames the file, but actually rebuilds the container
around unmodified video and audio data, yielding a file which works much
more stably with Adobe applications, and presumably others as well, as
ffmpeg's open source development goals result in very standards
    compliant files.
    (posted 5 months ago)
Now, this seems to properly address the issues that can arise from simply renaming .mod to .mpg, as suggested by Ann. So from this point, I assume you can simply import the .mpg into Premiere Pro cs4 (or any other .mpg compliant program) and edit without issue, but it seems like I remember hearing something about Premiere not liking mpegs or something like that, so in that case, maybe it'd be better to skip this and go with option #2. But, it's been awhile since I've touched any NLE, much less premiere pro cs4, so I could be completely wrong and it may have no problems handling mpegs.
All of the things that I've quoted here came from the same thread, so I don't know how accurate any of this is, but the people that have posted these things seem fairly knowledgeable. If someone reads all of this and can confirm or deny any of it, it would be much appreciated.
Option 1 is not really an option for me, because I am sticking with premiere pro cs4 -- I'm not going to get another editor just because it has .mod support. That leaves me with options 2 and 3: Convert to avi, or change the file wrapper/extension properly with FFmpeg and then simply import the resulting .mpg file... Which is better? Or is there yet another solution that I am unaware of that would be even better?

  • How to optimize Mac file sharing speeds over LAN?

I got a new NetGear R7000, and I find it very fast for LAN transfers wired or wireless between Macs running OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Testing large (multigigabyte) file transfers over AFP, an early 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.1 connecting to a 2011 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.5, Ethernet speeds can hit 6 GB per min (800 Mbps) real world and wireless 2.06 GB / min (273 Mbps), real world performance.
If I perform a similar test for Snow Leopard on both ends, an early 2011 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 onnecting to a 2010 Mac Mini also running 10.6.8, has Ethernet transfers topping out at about 1.72 Gigabytes per minute for Ethernet (228 Mbps) and 1.07 GB / min (140 Mbps) for Wifi, real world performance.
I am wondering if there is anything I can do to speed up the Snow Leopard AFP networking. (There are some applications that run only in Snow Leopard and I would like to have it network efficiently instead of getting rid of it. The Macbook Pro has a partitioned drive so I can boot between Snow Leopard and Mavericks.)
I know that Apple made some tweaks in file sharing performance in Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and I suspect TCP IP parameters were altered to speed things up dramatically when there were all the complaints about it being slow on Mac Book Airs with 802.11ac. I am curious what Apple did.
I am wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can improve AFP file sharing performance in Snow Leopard. Are there TCP IP parameters, or plist entries, or other hidden settings I can change? Parameters I can tune in sysctl.conf? I am hoping a real network guru can come on here to advise on some advanced techniques I can use to speed up AFP on Snow Leopard. It is the Macs running Snow Leopard that need to be tuned, not the router, as speeds are very fast sharing between Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Also, for any/all Mac OS versions, are there networking parameters that I can tune to speed up transfers that involve a very large number of very small files? Even recent versions of OS X slow down greatly on this.
    Thanks in advance

Anyone have any ideas? What kind of speed do others see through gigabit Ethernet, with snow leopard or Lion?

  • My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Captivate 4 is now working very slowly - how can I speed things up?

    Hi,
My elearning course is now 13,641 KB and is starting to work very slowly. I have deleted all unused items from the library. Is there anything else I can do to speed things up? I don't want to split the project up at this stage.
    Thanks.

Did the slowness begin when you moved your Captivate project files onto another drive?
You need to be aware that you should always ONLY work on Captivate project files that are sitting on your own local hard drives, never those stored on a LAN or other drive.  Too many issues arise from working on non-local project files.

  • Would this speed things up even more?

I recently upgraded to the ATI video card on my Mac Pro, and as indicated by many others on this forum it REALLY helped. In fact, it's made a huge difference and now I think I'll purchase Aperture.
Now, I've got the original stock graphics card left-over. Question: can that card be installed as a second video card, to exclusively power a second monitor? Sorry for the ignorance; prior to Aperture, nothing I did on my various Macs ever really taxed the GPU, so I was always contented with the stock card and therefore am behind the times on the subject.
Right now, I've got a 24" Dell as my primary and a 23" Apple cinema display as my second. I like using the 23" Apple monitor to show images full-screen in Aperture, keeping my library/grid view on the primary 24" monitor.
Would plugging in the second monitor into the second video card, and working in a one-monitor setup in Aperture speed things up? Then Aperture would only only have to power that one display, but I'd still have the second running decently enough for Finder folders, itunes, IM, etc.

while not this exactly, i did try to install a 2nd video card in my G5 and run 3 monitors ...
this works in everything except aperture ... i think i remember reading here somewhere that aperture CANNOT utilize multiple vid cards (???) ...
so what you want is to use 2 cards to power 2 monitors but only have aperture run on one ??? interesting proposition ... i tried to just have aperture on one display - that is i disabled my second one to see if it made a dramatic difference - i must say i DID NOT notice any difference between the x800 running 1 or 2 screens under aperture ... this was with canon 5D RAW files ~ 12MP ... so, i have removed my 2nd vid card and run 2x23" on just the x800 and am PERFECTLY content with the performance ...
i guess that the answer to your question will be only determined by trying it out ... as the definition of "decently enough" can only be made by you as the user ...

  • File.exists() speed

I have written a recursive algorithm for a particular statistical analysis that often requires in excess of 1x10^30 permutations. The function looks to see if file.exists(). If file.exists()==true, then a calculation is perfomed and a new file is written. If file.exists()==false, three "smaller" files are checked for using file.exists() by calling back on the same function. The function continues to divide the problem into smaller parts until it finds the files it needs. It then creates the files it doesn't currently have.
When I run the function, it performs quickly when only a small number of recusions are required. Otherwise, the function gets very slow (the current run has been executing for 4 days now, and no it is not an infinite recusion). I don't know if the slowness is due to the number of objects that are created by the recusion (I create several thousand BigIntegers with each recusion), or if it is due to the file.exists() method. At the moment, several hundred files are stored in the directory where the file.exists() method is checking. If the slowness I'm encountering is due to the file.exists() method, and if that method is slowed by the number of files I have, is there a way to speed things up? For example, would it be faster to store all the file names in a file and then only search through this file for an existing file name?
Another possibility for the slowness is that I'm also reading files at each recusion and the files may be 1-20MB each.
Sorry I can't post any source code. I can't access my files at the moment.
Any help or suggestions for speeding things up are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

You should profile your code to see what it's actually doing all the time. Once you know what is slowing it down you can try to search for fixes.
There are several profilers available for tuning Java:

  • Ichat file upload speeds really slow

i am having issues with ichat file upload speeds.
    I'm sending a 1.5MB file and it's took 6+ minutes - one time it took 12 minutes!
The same file sent back to me only took 40 seconds.
The strange thing is it took 15 seconds to email the file, and 7 seconds to send the same file through Skype.
There seems to be some issue with ichat. I've cost moved offices and when I was working from home it was not an issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Are you dropping the file on the Buddy in the Buddy List ? (Peer-to-Peer)
If you are sending in a Text Chat the Chat has to Change to a Direct IM first which is Peer-to-Peer.
If you don't have the port open for the Direct IM iChat may try to route it through the AIM servers which will be longer. (normally it fails)

  • Mavericks (10.9.5) File Sharing Speeds are awful over Gigabit

I was recently hired at a small design business and we have 3 iMacs (late 2011) and a Mac Mini (Late 2012) that frequently need to share files. We are all attached via Gigabit LAN which is verified when I open Network Utility on any of the computers and read the link speed under the info tab. The Mac Mini acts as a file server. Everyone mounts to it using the AFP protocol and uses the admin account's credentials. The Mac Mini is not running OSX server because we felt it was unnecessary as we do not need to manage user accounts.
Everything is terribly slow. Finder frequently beach balls and takes forever just to list directories. File transfer speeds are slow even for a 100mbps connection and connections frequently drop. Would running OS X Server on the Mac Mini help anything? Do we need to tweak our network settings? We are prepping to update to Yosemite with clean installs with the hopes of starting with a clean slate. Will this help or exacerbate the problem?
    Thanks for any help!

Have you tried connecting to the server using AFP?
To protect your existing content, I would suggest the following:
1:  Identify where your existing shared folder is - Let's assume it is /Users/Shared/CurrentShare
2:  Create another folder in the same relative location - For example, /Users/Shared/Test
3:  Share this folder ensuring that AFP is enabled
4:  From a workstation, disconnect from the server
5:  From the same workstation, connect to the server using:
a:  From the Finder, go to the Go menu
         b:  Choose Connect to Server...
c:  In the address field enter afp://host.domain.tld of your server or afp://10.0.0.10
-- Obviously replace host.domain.tld with the actual fully qualified host name and/or the IP with the actual IP address of the server.
6:  Once connected via AFP, perform a series of copy tests and time the performance.
All things being equal, assuming you changed nothing else, this test should determine if the issue is the protocol or not.  If AFP is faster than SMB, then you know SMB is crippling you.  If the speed is the same, then you need to look elsewhere.
A Mac mini Server (or not) should be able to achieve about 4 GB/min when performing large file reads or rights over AFP.  This is a good rule of thumb.  If you create a 500 MB DMG file, it should copy in under 7.5 seconds.
If the performance of AFP is equally as bad, then you might need to investigate your disks.  How full is the drive?  Is there directory damage?  How are the files named?
    This should get you started.
