Handling error status 500

Question

Hi Guys,
I need to handle HTTP status 500. In my web.xml, I have registered error code 500, 404 and java.lang.Exception like this.

</error-page>But this exception does not redirect to the error page.

You are right about the response already being committed. That must by why Tomcat just quits executing the page (as you indicated). I am running tomcat 5.5.9 on Debian Woody (unstable). Tomcat is running on port 8085.
Java version info:
user@user:~/$ java -version

My base tomcat install is in /var/tomcat5/ but I am setting these environment variables:
TOMCAT_BASE=/var/tomcat5
SERVER_BASE=/var/tomcat5/secondInstance
This is so I can run multple instances of Tomcat with their own unique configurations. The secondInstance directory has these directories (the executable is in /var/tomcat5/bin):
common
conf
logs
temp
webapps
work
In my application I am using log4j so I have a custom log for those errors (thrown explicitly in the application). I also have catalina.out and localhost.2005-09-14.log which is where exceptions go when not handled in a catch, these files also give me all the startup/shutdown messages and they give me anything I System.out.println. There are no other log files with anything in them in either this log directory or /var/tomcat5/logs/. I even deleted all my logs and restarted tomcat to make sure I wasnt just missing the log file.
to start/stop tocat I use a script that does this:
(start)
TOMCAT_BASE=/var/tomcat5
SERVER_BASE=/var/tomcat5/secondInstance
CATALINA_BASE=$SERVER_BASE $TOMCAT_BASE/bin/startup.sh
(stop)
TOMCAT_BASE=/var/tomcat5
SERVER_BASE=/var/tomcat5/waterton
CATALINA_BASE=$SERVER_BASE $TOMCAT_BASE/bin/shutdown.sh
