Handling mp3s in safari

hello
currently when i click on an mp3 link the file downloads and then plays in iTunes. however, i would prefer it to play inside safari with the quicktime plugin. how do i change it so this happens
this problem occured after i installed itunes 4.9. can anyone help???
thank you

I tried this solution. It makes sense at first, but for some reason MP3 files still open up in iTunes. I've got Safari 2.0.1 and iTunes 4.9.
In Firefox, it gives the option to open in Quicktime, but in reality it just opens using the default OS app for MP3s.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the use itunes for Internet music playback option. I wish there was a way to undo that.
As a workaround, I'm setting up my web page to embed the MP3 files using the HTML <embed> tag, but I still wish there was a way to fix this.

  • Can no longer simultaneously stream an mp3 in Safari when using fast user switching option.

After updating to ios 5, I can no longer stream an mp3 in Safari when I use the fast user switching option.  For instance, if you are listening to streaming content in a Safari tab and want to reference another app as soon as you switch from the Safari stream pauses.
This was not the case with previous versions of ios.  Any ideas on a work around to restore this functionality to keep Safarr streaming content in the background?

User switching problems is the very first thing I noticed with SL. I have a host of other problems with SL but this is one of the most frustrating. The user switching did not work on 10.6 very well either but was wicked fast in 10.5.x
Apple rewrote the Kernel so this type of thing is expected, still the test crew missed this very noticable problem. Hopefully 10.6.2 has a fix.

  • Stream mp3s in safari

I was able to stream mp3s from safari and navigate away from the safari app with the mp3 still playing in the background. Now for some reason I am unable to do that. It stops playing when I hit the home button or if my phone locks. How do I fix this? Again, it was working earlier today.

  • Playing mp3s in Safari...

I did a search, and my problem is essentially the same as this archived topic, though obviously with newer versions of iTunes and Safari (6.0.4 and 2.0.3 respectively).
So really the problem is that Safari now automatically downloads mp3s to play in iTunes, when it used to play them in their own window with what appeared to be QT.
The keys here are that a) my hard drive crashed about a month ago, and it is since that repair that the change occurred; and b) I have tried seemingly every QT MIME setting, from checking all the related boxes to none, and many settings in between.
I, like the author of the archived topic, think it has something to do with iTunes defaulting itself. That's the part that I'm most hesitent to mess around with, because while I want online mp3 links to play in Safari via QT, I also want to maintain iTunes as the default player for mp3 files on the computer itself. I had managed to obtain this balance on my previous settings (ie. before the crash) so I know it can be done.
    Thanks,
    dan

  • TS1702 trying to download mp3 get: Safari cannot download this file

I am trying to download MP3  even tried AAC I receive error Safari cannot download this file..  I am clueless in how to do this thank you Linda

You can't download music via Safari. If you are trying to get music into the Music app then you will either need to buy/download them via the iTunes store app, or download them on your computer and sync them. If you are using a third-party music app then does it have its own browser function for downloading music, or does it only support copying via a computer's iTunes ?

  • Quicktime .mp4 & ,mp3 in Safari via EDGE (o2 UK)

    Hi there
I seem to be unable to view mp4 quicktimes or listen to podcasts (.mp3) when using the EDGE network. Everything works just nicely via wi-fi (i.e. touch the blue play arrow it brings up the standard transport controls and starts buffering) but visit the same pages via EDGE and no joy (i.e. I dont get the blue play arrow just the first frame of the movie as a static image)
The example pages are the Apple Movie Trailers site and the BBC podcasts iphone site.
Is this a general restriction (I cant seem to find a reference to it anywhere if it is) - or (hopefully) a setting somewhere.
Its a bit of a pain

It could be due to the slowness of the particular Edge connection you are getting -- if it's too slow that will indeed be a symptom.

  • MP3s and iTunes

This question has come up before, but I don't feel it was resolved to my satisfaction.
I would like to, when I click on a linked MP3, for it to open iTunes. I don't want to right-click, or ctrl-click, or any key modifiers. I don't want to download it first then double-click the file. (this is what I already do and it drives me up the wall) Here's the process that I want to follow:
Step 1.) Click the linked mp3 file.
Done! That's it, finito. The file downloads, Safari launches iTunes, the file is copied to the library, and plays it back.
As it is now, Quicktime opens up in either the same tab or a new tab. (The behavior is a bit unpredictable) While this is well and good, I never click a linked mp3 that I don't want in iTunes, thereby creating an extra step. I have tried fiddling with the MIME types in Quicktime's prefpane, I've tried the "Default Apps" prefpane. They both say Quicktime isn't the application to handle mp3's, and yet it still does.
Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.

I just experimented and found that I could get the results you're looking by doing the following:
Open System Preferences and click on QuickTime. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on the MIME Settings button.
Uncheck both the entire MPEG section and the entire MP3 section. (So that all subsections are unchecked as well.) Click OK.
Quit Safari, as noted in the thread you linked to.
Now, on relaunching Safari, this test MP3 link that I was using for this downloads instead of opening in Safari, while it previously opened in Safari.
Previously I tried just unchecking "MP3 audio" in QuickTime's MIME settings. That didn't do the trick. I'm guessing it has to do with what kind of file the MP3 actually is. (That's something QuickTimeKirk or someone else with more knowledge in that area can probably help with, as well as giving some advice about which file formats in the MPEG section and possibly others should be checked/unchecked to get the most effective results.)
[Edit: QuickTime Kirk posted while I was composing this post. I would most definitely defer to QuickTimeKirk with regards to whether or not altering these settings is a good idea.]

  • Problems with downloads in Safari after QT 7.1.1 update

Until I installed the QT 7.1.1 update a couple months back, I never had a problem downloading mp3 files from some websites using Safari. Now on these sites Quicktime will pop up and play the file if I click the mp3's download button. If I go into Safari settings and disable plug-ins, clicking on the same file just downloads an html file. These files download fine when using a PC at my workplace, so I don't know what changed in Quicktime or Safari to prevent downloads from some sites.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

First check to see that the QuickTime System Preferences select QuickTime to handle mp3 files instead of a different application like iTunes. Another thing you might try is updating to QuickTime 7.1.2 to see if it is any different. If not, you might try re-installing the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo installer.

  • Download mp3 from email

When I download an mp3 from an email on my iPhone 5, where does it go?

No. You will need an App that can directly handle MP3's .
    The Music App cannot.
Where does it say its downloading?   If it came as an attatchment its already on your phone, you just need to open it in an app that can handle it, so it would not need to download.
If its just a link to the mp3 file, then it would download in Safari, and then offer to open it in an App that can play it if you have one, otherwise it would not download.

  • Sound disappeared in Safari and BBC Radio Widget

Two days ago, without warning, the sound disappeared from both Safari and my BBC Radio Widget. All other sound on the computer is fine and if I play an MP3 through Safari it will play but otherwise there is silence. (Problem was discovered by our 5 year-old who was disappointed that there was no sound coming from the CBeebies websites!).
Have checked all other sound options and everything is in order.
Went to local Mac re-seller and they shrugged their shoulders and said try here.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.

    You're welcome.
If there is a preference file associate with the widget, move it to the trash before you reinstall a new copy. The preference file will be name widget-com.(name assigned to widget).plist. You can try a search in spotlight on look in your User Library>Preferences folder.

  • How can I get my itunes purchases to play on any mp3 player?

I can't get my itunes purchases to play on my other mp3 players.  I don't want to download these programs people suggest on the internet.
And really, I shouldn't have to. If I've already paid for the music, why can't I put it on the device I choose?  There must be a way. Any help? BTW, I'm using Windows Vista, (yuk)

You can put the music on any device you choose, as long as the device can play the format. Purchases from the iTunes Store are in industry-standard AAC format. If you want to use them on a player that can only handle MP3, you need to convert the tracks. See:

  • Mp3 and RecordStore Capable Emulator

Currently I'm trying to develop an application that plays back mp3's. I am just wondering if there exists an emulator that can handle both, record sets and mp3 playback.
WTK22 does a good job of handling recorcStores, but can not handle Mp3 playback.
I did find a motorola emulator that handled mp3 playback, unfortunately it crashes as soon as I try and load information into the recordStore.
If anyone knows of one, perhaps they could pass along the name, or even a link.
Another question I do have about WTK22 is, is there any way of increasing the recordStore size, or is it stuck at 1MB . . . and what is the average size of a record store on a new phone these days?

I wasn't sure what is RecordStore but apparently it is MIDP's way of persisting data.
As it shows, I have little knowledge of JavaME, so I don't know if that's a problem with the emulator or the usage of RecordStore within JavaFX or something else.
Now, perhaps you can use the [javafx.io.Storage|http://java.sun.com/javafx/1.2/docs/api/javafx.io/javafx.io.Storage.html] class for persisting data, it is designed to work both in JavaME and on desktop.
It might offer less features than RecordStore, though.

  • Cannot save an MP3 file from a webpage after Leopard upgrade

    Hello,
I am a graduate student and my instructor posts his lectures online as mp3 files. When I was using Tiger and Safari, I was able to right click the file and save it to my computer. Now, after I upgraded to Leopard, I right click and attempt to save and I get an error message of "no permissions to read file." If I click on the file, quicktime will play the mP3 in the safari browser but I want to save the file to my computer so I can listen to it through iTunes.
I am able to currently work around this by using Firefox as it allows me to save the file with no problem but I want to use Safari.
    Any ideas?
BTW - Safari is 3.0.4 (Leopard)
    Thanks!

It won't work if you drag it, but you can copy it from the Activity window, and then paste it into the downloads window. But it may get stuck that way too. The only way I know of is to open the MP3 in Safari, let it load, and then click on File and save it. And I'm using the latest Safari.

  • Wiki Server will not play embedded MP3 files in Windows Browsers

I have a brand new cleanly installed OS X Server running on a Fall 2012 Mac Mini. I have created a Wiki where I am uploading .mp3 recordings of classes for people to listen to online or download.
I can access the wiki and "quicklook" the MP3s in Safari on a Mac and iPad but I cannot on any Windows based web browser or in Chrome on my iPad or Mac. In Chrome on windows or an iPad the Quicklook preview window appears but no sound ever plays. In Firefox on Windows the preview window appears and plays a few seconds of audio and then stops.
I have mutliple wikis like this set up on Snow Leopard Server and they work just fine in all browsers. This appears to be a bug with OS X Server 10.8 v.2.2.
Any suggestions or does anyone know if there will be a fix for this anytime soon?
Between this issue, the fact that I cannot successfully migrate my old wikis from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server, and the fact that I cannot run Snow Leopard Server on newer Mac hardware, Apple seems to be wanting me to jump ship and abandon their platform.

Use the Provide Server Feedback Button in the Server app under the About section.
