Handling RAW images in Photoshop vs. Photoshop Elements

Currently I am running trial versions of Photoshop CS4 and PSE7. For a great deal I am impressen about the functionality of PSE w.r.t. to its price/performance, but I miss some easy things that Photoshop has. Or am I doing things wrong?
When I open a raw (CR2) image in Photoshop CS 4 then the Camera Raw Plugin Window starts and opens the file. You can then change setting in the file which are saved not in the RAW file but an XMP file.  Accordingly you can save the resulting image in many formats like dng, jpg, tiff, bmp, psd. That is very handy and straight forward. To have the changes in a separate tiny xmp-file saves a lot of diskspace.
When doing the same in PSE the Camera RAW converter starts and opens the file in the same way. Almost identical. However you can save the changes only in a DNG file, which has roughly the same size as the RAW file. A very expensive way to save changes on a RAW file. Why is not the same mechanism used??
Another difference in favor of Photoshop CS4 is the better and more versatile sharpening functionality. A Pity for a hobbyist that CS4 is so expensive and that some handy common used functionality is not present in FSE7.
Attached the about boxes of Camera Raw in CS4 resp PSE. Same version, but not same functionality . Confusing.

In Elements you open the file and save it in the editor instead.

  • Why doesn't a RAW image placed in a Photoshop Document  pick up changes?

I have just noticed that if you place a RAW image in a PSD(CS6), then tweak the RAW image using Camera RAW, the changes are not picked up by the PSD.
I always try and keep my PSDs as open to change as possible and placing is a big part of this. Usually I place an image in a PSD, then if I edit the image outside the PSD, the changes are picked up in the PSD.
With RAW this doesn't seem to happen. I have the following file-structure:
         -- someFolder
            -- somePSD
            -- someRAWFile
            -- someRAWFIleXMP
    What I'm doing:
    1. I drag the RAW File into the PSD.
    2. I open the RAW File and tweak it.
    3. Photoshop does not reflect the changes
    4. I drag the RAWFile into the PSD
    5. I then have the same placed RAW File with the changes reflected as well as the old placed RAWFile without them.
So even though both placed images are the same image, they reflect the RAW File at the time it was placed, not at its current state which is surely the whole point of placing a file. It seems that the image is encoded with the RAW settings at the time it is imported, but these are never updated.
What am I missing? Is this a bug or is there no point placing a RAW file?

If you need a "non-destructive" alternative, you can import the raw as a Smart Object. You can set this in Camera Raw's Workflow Options, or you can do this 'on the fly' by holding down Shift when you click on Open.
If you want to change a develop setting after adding the image to a PSD, double-click on the layer thumbnail to reopen the ACR session, and the OK or Cancel when you're finished.
    Thanks Yammer,
this is very good to know.

  • Canon 5d iii, Cant open my Raw images in bridge or photoshop

I have installed the most recent updates (8.3) and I still can't open my Raw files in bridge or photoshop CS5. Can someone please help me?

What have you installed that is version 8.3?
Camera Raw 8.3 is not compatible with CS5.  You can go to PS-CS5 / Help / About Plug-ins / Camera Raw and see what version you have.
If you mean you have installed the DNG Converter 8.3, then installing it isn’t’ enough, you have to run it and convert your raw files to DNGs so they will open in an older version of the ACR plug-in.

  • Can't get my RAW images to open up in elements 9 from my new 5d mark 3 Camera!

I never had problems opening my RAW images from Canon 5d Mark2 but for some reason, they won't open from my new canon 5d mark 3 camera.  A pop up box comes up that says, cannot open file "........." because it is the wrong type of file.  Can anyone help as to what I can do???

    Hi,
The 5D mark III requires ACR 6.7 or higher - PSE 9 can only goes as far as ACR 6.5.
You need to update to a newer version of PSE or use the free DNG converter to turn the CR2 files into DNGs which can then be read by PSE9.

  • I just got a Canon T3 Rebel. Does Photostream handle RAW images?

Hello. I am new to DSLR photography and I was wondering if I transferred my RAW photos to Aperture to edit them and I then wanted to put them on my iPad 2 would Photostream be able to read the RAW file? I don't want it to downgrade the quality. Also, I have a bunch of photo apps on my iPad such as Snapseed, Photogene, Photoforge, etc be able to let me edit the RAW file and save it?

Hi Tgara. Thanks for your help. I like your system. Think I am going to do it that way. So you export the RAW images into JPEGs from Aperture...I take it you use full resolution? Then you save it to your desktop and tell iTunes to sync with that, correct? Also, do you export the version that you edited as JPEG Full resoultion in the export dialog box? Doesn't iTunes compress the image. I was under the impression that iTunes does not sync at full res. I currently do sync with iTunes, but in the photos pane I sync photos from Aperture and check the albums I want to sync. So if I point iTunes to sync from a folder on my desktop will it sync it in full res?
    1.  Yes, I export the edited RAW images to JPGs.  I select the photos I want to export, right-click, and choose Export, Versions.  From there, I think I use medium resolution JPGs to keep the file sizes reasonable.  Keep in mind, the iPad 2 has a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels at 132 pixels per inch, so anything greater than this is a waste.  Plus, iTunes and the iPad itself will "optimize" the photos during the import process so they are compatible with the iPad screen.  That said, to my eye, the imported images on the iPad look great.  I suggest you try a few export resolution settings and see for yourself what looks best to you.
    2.  My workflow for a hypothetical project (let's call it "France 2012") is as follows:
         A.  Import RAW images from my camera CF card and edit them.
         B.  Select the images I want to show off on my iPad and export those as JPGS to a folder on my desktop called France 2012.  You can use whatever resolution you want... I choose the 1024 size.
         C.  Create an empty folder on my computer Hard Drive called iOS Photos.  For convenience, I keep this folder under my username/Pictures.
         D.  Move the France 2012 folder into the iOS Photos folder.
         E.  Tell iTunes to sync photos with the iOS Photos folder.
Once step E is done and you sync your iPad, you should see France 2012 as a new Album in the Photos app on your iPad.
Of course, you can create new folders and add them to the iOS Photos folder.  Upon Syncing, those new folders will show up as new albums.

  • Editing non-raw image files in Adobe Photoshop

    Hi,
I am currently digging into the world of Lightroom and setting up a work flow which in my case needs to include editing non-raw files in Adobe Photoshop.
Please bear in mind that I am quite new to Lightroom so I am not sure I have found all shortcuts and settings to manipulate.
I will explain what I trying to do (and why) and hope that the community can comment and help put if possible.
I myself shoot almost everything in RAW format, and I have been using Photoshop (PS) and Camera Raw (ACR) for some years now. I am now on Photoshop CS6.
But now the amount of images to handle requires a CMS, so I went for Lightroom 4 - hoping/believing that I would find an effective and efficient work flow integration between the two Adobe products.
But I am more and more also helping others to enhance their images, and I most often get jpg files as image source.
I am used to using PS layers, filters, smart objects etc extensively to do what I want to do.
OK, I admin that I already use ACR quite a lot, and sometimes even as the only tool even for jpg images.
I have began diving/snorkeling with friends and often the images we bring back home is in jpg format, and so far I still believe that the best image "restoration" can be done in Photoshop using adjustment layers, channel mixing and filters to get satisfactory results.
So now on to my concerns and issues:
    1) Lightroom user interface efficiency - "Edit in"
When I want to edit a jpg image in Photoshop I :
    action
    comment
    - left click image to select it
ok, I agree this is needed
    - right click image to bring up context menu
ok, I agree this is needed
    - move cursor to "Edit in", and wait for another context menu
    ok, ...
    - click "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6"
    Yes that's want I want
    - Lightroom presents the "Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop CS6" selection menu.
Yes I know, I saw it the last
    nnn times I did it
    - if I need option "Edit a Copy" or "Edit Orginal" I move cursor again, left click to select ,
move cursor to Edit and left click
    - and finally Lightroom sends the jpg image to Photoshop as a jpg image
No, I want a tiff file since that
is what I have set up in
    preferences
OK, I know that I can also use the keyboard instead of mouse for this, but the number of actions required from my side is pretty much unchanged.
For a quick working, Lightroom and PS skilled person, this is just annoying.
Is this effecient?     Well it depends. For Lightroom beginners this is good. But for me it is a true annoying obstacle
    2) Lightroom "Edit in" - is it effective
Is this effective?     I say no.      I have specified in preferences that I want PS to receive a TIFF file in Adobe RGB 1998 color space
Also, I cannot change to TIFF in PS without losing the link between the two images. (If I do, the new TIFF file is not imported by Lightroom, so I have to that manually)
I have found out that I can choose the path "Select image - select "Open as Smartobject in Adobe Photoshop".
This will give me a tiff file, and when saved in PS the jpg and tiff files are linked and Lightroom has automatically imported the tiff file into the Catalog.
What I need / what I would like to know / what I would like to have:
    * Is there a (customizable) keyboard shortcut that enables me to: Select Picture + Use shortcut  - and then I end up in Photoshop (with the Edit option I use 90% of the time) ?
    * Is there a preference that I can set so that jpg images also are opened as tiff files in Photoshop per default?
    * Is there a way to select multiple images and launch them all in Photoshop (and keeping the link between the jpg and tiff files) ?
    * I would like a preference setting allowing me to choose that any new file coming back from Photoshop (after "Edit in" ) is written to a sub-folder, or to a specific folder set by me.
This would align with my work flow for jpg handling, where the jpg is the "original" and the tiff file is what will eventually end up as image "master" (from where I print,  or produce web / HDTV jpg's).
    * Is there a way to automatically launch a Photoshop Action on the file coming from Lightroom?
This would also help in my work flow. E.g. I have currently 100 jpg's and avi files which are UW (under water shots) and the adjustment layers I build are always the same (to start with).
Of course, I can launch the Action once I am in Photohop  - but again, doing 1-5 times is ok, doing it more than 100 times ...
    * I am skilled computer programmer  - can I use Lightroom SDK to write plug-ins to achieve the above enhancements ?
    Regards
    Bosse W

    * Is there a (customizable) keyboard shortcut that enables me to: Select Picture + Use shortcut  - and then I end up in Photoshop (with the Edit option I use 90% of the time) ?
-- The keyboard shortcut Command/Ctrl+E will perform steps 2-4 in your above list. You only have to click the Edit button, as the last choice (Edit Original, Edit Copy, Edit Copy with LR adjustments) will be remembered.
    * Is there a preference that I can set so that jpg images also are opened as tiff files in Photoshop per default?
-- No, a JPEG in Lightroom will always open as a JPEG in Photoshop. If you have made changes to the file that are not supported by the JPEG format (e.g. added a layer) when you go to save the file, it will be saved as either a TIFF or PSD, based on the preference in Lightroom.
    * Is there a way to select multiple images and launch them all in Photoshop (and keeping the link between the jpg and tiff files) ?
-- Yes, select all the files you want to edit, and use the keyboard shortcut, menu command, or right-click context menu command.
-- No, there is no automatic way to do this. If you use the Edit a Copy method, the copy is created instantly in the same folder as the original.
-- Yes and No, this is not something that can be setup in Lightroom, but you can set it up in Photoshop using the Script Events Manager.
    * I am skilled computer programmer  - can I use Lightroom SDK to write plug-ins to achieve the above enhancements ?
    -- Yes: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/photoshoplightroom.htmlhttp://www.adobe.com/devnet/photoshoplightroom.html

  • Can't open RAW Nikon files (NEF) using PS3 10.0 running 10.6.8 , think there is a conflict with camera Raw plug-in. Can't open raw images in bridge or photoshop.

I think I may have a Camera Raw plug-in conflict or plug in may be in the wrong place. In both PS3 and Bridge Nikon raw files (NEF) will not open. I've noticed that in photoshop in the pull down menu-about plug-in, I have 2 Camera Raw (s) listed, getting info one is 4.0, the other 4.6.0.30. It appears that my files and .xmp are 4.0 just by searching for 'Camera Raw' either 4. or 4.6 in spotlight. nothing is listed in spotlight under camera raw 4.6, but all my images are listed in the spotlight if I search for camera raw 4.0! I can not open either in Bridge or Photoshop CS3 I just receive the error message 'could not complete this request because photoshop does not reconize this type of file'. any help would this is greatfully appreciated. Thanks

Well if you have a fairly new Nikon camera PS CS3 will not have the proper version of ACR to support that camera.
You could use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the NEF files to DNGs or you can update PS to a newer version that does have support for newer cameras or you could buy Adobe Lightroom V4 which also has support for the newer Nikon cameras.

  • RAW Image appears sharper in Photoshop than Aperture

Using the 20in screen Raw files that I have imported into Aperture 2.1.1 appear significantly less sharp than when the same file is imported into Photoshop CS3
I also have not found a way of significantly sharpening the Raw based image in Aperture -
The files are from an Olympus E3 with the current camera firmware installed.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

adobe camera raw applies significantly more sharpening (and noise reduction) to images by default. I find the edge sharpen in aperture to be far superior, and i also feel i can squeeze just a little more detail out of my raw files in aperture, especially at higher iso's.
to sharpen, just select the image and press control-S and adjust to your liking. you can also tweak the sharpening applied by default to the images in the raw settings of each picture.

  • Hi i have been lucky enough to take delivery of the Nikon D810 but am unable to upload the raw images into LR5 or Photoshop CC 2014 is this just a matter of waiting for a new version of ACR ??  Thanks

Hi i have been lucky enough to take delivery of the Nikon D810 but am unable to upload NEF files into LR5 or Photoshop CC 2014 is this just a matter of waiting for the next version of ACR ???

What version of Camera Raw do you have?  Do Help - About Plug-in... - Camera Raw to see.
If it's not 8.5, which is the latest current release as of this writing, you might want to look this over:  Camera Raw updates cannot be applied
Just looking over the list here - Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras - I don't see the D810 listed at all.  Maybe that page isn't updated or maybe the camera is newer than even the newest Camera Raw release, in which case you'll have to wait for Camera Raw 8.6.  Note that Adobe often releases beta versions early so the wait may not be that long...

  • RAW Images won't open in elements

I recently loaded Photoshop Elements onto my MAC and attempted to use it to review and edit some images I took with my 7D Mark ii. Received the following message:
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information.
Managed to figure out that I need an update but when I downloaded and installed it (at least I think that's what I did), nothing changed. I feel obliged to admit that I'm a recent MAC convert and a Photoshop novice. ANY assistance would be appreciated!

It is not the version of Photoshop Elements, it is the version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that is installed as a plug-in.  In the PE Help menu, look for "Updates".  Click it and let it work.
If you did it any other way, it won't work.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 - Canon EOS5D Mkiii - RAW images

I have Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9 installed on my iMac, operating system Version 10.9.4. I have upgraded my Canon EOS 5d Mki to a Mkiii and downloaded Adobe's Plug-in 6.5 update but I am unable to open RAW images from the Mkiii in Elements. They do open in Canon's software.Adobe offer no telephone support for this. Any ideas please?

You need camera raw 6.7 & PSE10 for the 5d mkiii. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Photoshop CS4 won't open Raw image

Not sure what happened, but when I edit a raw image, and push open Photoshop opens but does
not open the image. I just updated to 11.01, and updated camera raw to 5.6
I reinstalled Photoshop, and the updates and the same thing happens.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Okay this could be a tough one.
I don't use bridge in my normal work flow, I use ACDSee v3 for viewing my photos and graphic designs.
I am a wildlife photographer and have over 300 gigs of photos dating back to 2007.
I just installed a 2 terrabyte HD, and copied these files to this hard drive so that I have two hard drives with these files on them in case of a HD failure.
I opened a file in Camera Raw, edited it, and choose open. Photoshop opened and the would not open the file, and more or less freezes with still some capabilities in the menu. It won't close if you try and exit, and I need to use task manager to close Photoshop.
I then opened bridge, and purged the cache on that file, reopened the same Raw file CR2, edited it in ACR and then opened it in Photoshope and it opened.
I opened and closed files in a lot of older files and it worked fine. Is there a way to purge all the files, or is this not a good thing to do?
I take photos almost on a daily basis, so going through each folder would be a huge task.

  • How iPhoto handles Camera RAW images

Ok, so iPhoto can import Camera RAW files from supported cameras. But then what happens to them? This is what I think is happening when I edit imported Camera RAW files from my Canon Digital Rebel (not XT). If anyone has anything to add, I would appreciate it.
    1. When first imported into iPhoto, the image is untouched and shows as "Canon Raw" with its original size (approx 7MB) in the information window.
    2. If you have an external editor (like Photoshop Elements) setup, double clicking the photo causes iPhoto to create a new JPEG image with the same dimensions as the original and about 2.2MB in size. This JPEG image is what is opened in the external editor.
2a. The same thing happens if you edit inside iPhoto.
    3. After editing a RAW image (i.e. creating a JPEG as above), the iPhoto library still shows the image name with .CRW, but the information window now says the format is "JPEG Image (from Canon Raw)" and the size is about 2MB. The edited JPEG image is what is shown in the iPhoto thumbnail.
    4. If you now Share->Export the image, when "Original" is selected in the Format popup menu, the unedited RAW image is exported.
    5. If you want to export the edited image, you need to select JPEG from the Format popup menu when you select Share->Export. Then your edited JPEG image will be exported.
    6. If you drag the original unedited RAW image from the iPhoto library window to the Photoshop Elements icon in the dock, the Canon RAW image is opened in Photoshop Elements. In this case, iPhoto doesn't create the JPEG image first.
    Did I miss anything?

I developed a neat workflow around iPhoto's RAW capabilities.
    1. Import RAWs into iPhoto
    2. Open Raws in Photoshop via dragging photos onto PS dock icon
    3. Edit RAWs
    4. Reduce to 8 bit
    5. Save as JPEG in the folder where iPhoto stores the JPEGs derived from the RAWs, i.e. the parent folder of the 'Original' folder where the RAWs you just edited are stored, i.e. overwrite the JPEGs already present there.
    6. Close the file in PS.
    Now, combine 4, 5, and 6 into a PS-Aktion.
iPhoto recognises the JPEGS, but sometimes one has to click on them show the edited version. Somehow, iPhoto is still at first creating a preview from the RAW file and not recognising that there is an edited JPEG version (understandingly, since iPhoto can't remember it created edited JPEGs).

  • Elements 6 Freezes with RAW images

I am about at my wits end here.  My computer is about 3 years old, but has all the required minimum's necessary to run Elements.  I've never had a problem with it until recently when I started shooting in RAW.  Elements will show images imported as broken links and will freeze up.  I've done every update possible, have tried repairing elements issues, uninstalled & reinstalled, and am still having issues.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this?
    Thanks.

It sounds like you may have encountered a known bug with how the PSE 6 Organizer handles raw images.  If deleting the Organizer preferences doesn't work, then take a look at this tech note:
