Hang at Booting the Kernel
Arch is installed, updated and running. For a variety of reasons I have decided to do a fresh install. Downloaded the November release, verified checksum, wrote to usb flash drive, rebooted system, chose x86_64.
Boots to "Booting the Kernel" then hangs.
Rebooted, chose i686, boots to prompt.
Re downloaded iso, verified checksum, wrote to dvd, booted, same issue. Booted dvd in different 64 bit system, chose x86_64 boots to prompt.
Motherboard - Asus Sabertooth 990FX
Any suggestions?
Try to adjust some of the boot options using grub. Here is an excerpt from the gentoo documentation concerning the gentoo live cd:
Gentoo Linux x86 Quick Install Guide wrote:
Booting the CD
Press F2 at the boot screen to find out what boot options exist. You can either start gentoo or gentoo-nofb, the latter disables the framebuffer. If you booted the LiveCD, don't forget to add the nox option to prevent the X graphical environment from starting. Several options allow to enable or disable some features. If all goes well, your hardware will be detected and all modules will be loaded. If the kernel fails to boot properly or if your computer hangs during the boot procedure, you may have to experiment with different configurations. The safest way is probably to use the nodetect option and then load required modules explicitly.
Maybe that helps for arch linux too.

Hello,
I'm trying to install Arch Linux on an old computer (AMD Athlon 900MHz) but the system freezes at boot. All I can see on screen is:
Loading boot/i686/vmlinuz.......
Loading boot/i686/archiso.img.....................................ready
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok
Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... done.
Booting the kernel
and then freezes. I've tried adding "nomodeset noacpi noapic nolapic acpi=off loglevel=7 debug" with no success and no debug information.
This computer is running a Linux 2.6.32 kernel right now and I wanted to update it.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advanceShould I try net install or anything like that?
Are you using latest install iso?
If so, it is already net install, it only allows you to install if you have an internet connection and will install all packages from arch servers.
The specs are more than the minimum requirements, at lest for what i've been reading arrond. The only problem i see is the PATA hdd, because latest arch kernel's don't support it anymore, there is a workarround for it at least
pcie_aspm=force
The other thing i don't know is if your VIA chipset is still supported in new kernels!

IBM x3950 Fails to boot the instalation disc
So I got hold of this IBM x3950 server with quad Xeon 7150N 's, 2 SAS drives in RAID, it currently runs Debian Wheezy, as a temporarily place holder, and I can't boot the arch installation medium, I ckecked the CD it runs fine on 2 other computers.
While it boots Debian I still get the
MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
error like below.
So this is the messages during the boot process on arch:
Loading boot/x86_64/vmlinuz......
Loading boot/x86_64/archiso.img...........................ready.
Probing EDD (edd=off to disabl)... ok
early console in decompress_kernel
Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... done.

At this point the system hangs and spouts gibberish to the console and then the system shuts down and I get a red LED on the server, indicating there's critical logs available in the system log. Unfortunately I can't find anything of relevance in there.
For odd reasons when I first boot the Arch CD and after it crashes ( the system does not physically shut down, the fans and everything still spin, apparently it always does that when it's plugged in to the power socket ) and then proceed to boot my Debian installation I get identical errors and it crashes. I have to unplug it for a minute or two and then it will boot just fine.
It's the first time I had an encounter like this so help would be much appreciated. Posting this late in the night so I'll have a look at it later tomorrow.Hi Paolo,
Thks for the reply. I have made some success since I posted. I actually downloaded Ubuntu & created a boot up disk. I have managed to successfully load this alongside the Vista (which doesn't work) & everything seems OK - so all I can say is that it must be somekind of s/w issue or perhaps damaged sectors or something on the Vista install.
I am happy to use Ubuntu - it will be interesting to see if I have to do anymore reformats in future...
Thks, John -
We recently added a Crucial 512MB module to a PowerBook G4 1.5 (17-inch) which worked fine for a few weeks. Apparently, the module had gone bad since now the Mac kernel panics with the chip installed. The chip was removed, but the system hangs on boot (not kernel panic like before).
I target disked the system to get the data off without any problems. Booting from the hard drive or from a Tiger DVD causes the system to hang right after the screen changes from the Apple logo to the blue Mac OS X startup screen.
I've reset the PRAM, defaults on the OpenFirmware, and reset the PMU. I've also checked the disk for errors while in target disk mode. No errors were found.
I attempted to boot the system in Single User mode and it appears to hang immediately after loading IOUSBFamily devices. Even though it states that it successfully enumerated the device, the following error is displayed...
AppleUSBHCI[0x1402000] Watchdog detected dead controller (hcca #: 12589, hc #: 13097)
I'm leaning toward a reinstall of the OS, but find it interesting that the system will hang even when attempting to boot from the Tiger DVD.
Ideas?
PowerBook G4 1.5/512/80/BT/AirPort Extreme Mac OS X (10.4.8)if it nangs when booted from OS DVD, problem is likely hardware.
sometimes bad hard drive will cause kernel panics and freezes.
there is supposed to be hardware test included with the original install DVD, maybe run it to see what it says. -

hi,
I was able to install 2.6.31 by setting the motherboards E-SATA/RAID mode to "ACPI" instead of "PCI". I first tried to disable the motherboard raid completely, but the system would not boot at all that way; setting the mode to "ACPI" did the trick.
I would say thanks, but I did all the work! But thanks to the Arch folks for a great distribution.
Hi,I got the follow message, much same with you, could you tell me how to deal?thx.

I have just installed Arch on a new computer. It works fine until I upgrade to Kernel 2.6.39. After that it hangs on boot.

Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.I have been trying to isolate the problem a little further. I re-installed (with just the base and sudo) and after upgrading pacman rebooted and it worked without fail. Then I installed libusb and libusb-compat which where required when I tried to upgrade just the kernel using
pacman -S kernel26
which initially failed because of the missing dependencies libusb and libusb-compat. I then re-booted and that worked without a problem.
I then upgraded to Kernel 2.6.39 using the above command and then it hung on rebooting. I saved the logs at each stage.
The additional logs in errors.log in the reboot that failed are as follows.

Kernel 2.6.37 hangs on boot from rocketraid 2310 array
Hi,
I know some people here are using RocketRaid cards and I was hoping somebody could help me with this. Since upgrading to 2.6.37 it seems that the kernel isn't able to load the rr2310 module anymore. When trying to boot from the array, I see a multi-monitor amount of garbled text for a split second before the kernel tries to boot normally and then hangs when trying to detect hdds. I really can't say more than this because none of this will be logged (since obviously the array can't be loaded) and I haven't been able to pause screen output at the exact moment yet. Everything works fine with 2.6.36.
I'm updating the kernel manually so I can recompile the rr2310 module everytime before invoking mkinitcpio For that I'm using this PKGBUILD and re-running makepkg everytime I've updated the kernel + headers. This has worked for me for more than a year now and I'm clueless as to what might be the issue now. Any ideas?Since this thread has the same origin as this one, all further development shall be discussed there.

I have a Presario SR5450F. Recently, it is very slow to boot up. It hangs up on the Compaq screen (Setup, Boot Menu, System Recovery, Diagnostics). It hangs up on that screen for at least 10 minutes, which is unacceptable. It just started doing this. Can someone please help me? Thanks.
This question was solved.

Glad I could help. Thanks for sharing your problem and what device was causing it for you. Sometimes having too many USB devices can cause problems. Your camera might work if only the mouse and keyboard are connected. It is worth a try if you need to get photos from it. I have seen even on my custom built PC occasional "odd" issues that can arise from having a variety of different USB devices connected.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.
When a solution is found please mark the post that solves your issue. -
Delay/hang on boot after upgrading to kernel 4.0.1
My laptop takes a very long time to boot and often does not even boot with kernel 4.0.1.
When the laptop does boot, my dmesg looks like this:

[SOLVED]Unable to boot into the kernel I compiled, kernel panic
I try to compile a kernel myself and boot into it, and I use virtualbox to test it. (arch guest inside my arch host) I first copy /proc/config.gz of my guest system to the linux source code directory, rename it to .config, and just compile it. After that I copy the image under arch/x86/bzImage to /boot directory, then I follow the instruction given by the arch wiki to create an entry in grub. Here is my /etc/grub.d/40-custom:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
menuentry 'Custom Entry' {
set root=(hd0,msdos1)
echo 'Loading Modified Linux'
linux /boot/vmlinuz-modified
echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
following is this command:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
But after reboot I cannot boot into the new kernel, it shows "unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0):

I have searched for a while but didn't find a solution. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, please?

I am referring to /proc/config.gz -- this is a gzip archive and needs to be decompressed before you can use it to compile your kernel image.
This isn't strictly true, it just makes the process easier because you're starting with a sane .config (assuming you're booted into one of Arch's official kernels at least). You can start from scratch, but you need to know what you're doing.
Frefreak wrote:Ok, I'll rebuild everything from the beginning later.
No need to rebuild everything, just generate an initramfs for the custom kernel. The initramfs contains modules that are specific to a the kernel image that they were generated for; this is probably why /boot/initramfs-linux.img isn't working for you. -
Unable to boot the sytem after applying kernel patch 118844-27
We have an hp ProLiant DL380 Storage server connected to HP StorageWorks Moduler Smart Array 30 via SCSI. Solaris 03/05 was installed previously on this system with kernel 118844-20. When I queried and installed all required patches with 'smpatch add -i .. ' command, all patches applied and the system is rebooted. After reboot, the system kept restarting. I followed the instructions on Sun Alert document 102087, and installed grub using 01/06 1st CDROM. It installed successfully, but problem persisted. The systems started booting, but before printing 'Configuring devices' the system rebooted again. Providing -v option to the kernel, it lastly printed a PCI device id (/pci@....) and after 2-3 seconds rebooted again.
Finally I had to reinstall the solaris (this time 01/06). The disk was accessible after booting with CD ROM, and I was able to get cylinder numbers of disk, and I installed the new system to the root partition of the other live upgrade environment. The boot disk was partitioned under linux, it was three partitions, Solaris2 (50GB),Solaris(4GB),Linux(18GB). Installation medium told that the fdisk partition was invalid, and i repartitioned the whole disk again.
System up and running Solaris 10 01/06 now, but the strange thing is that, previously hard disk (both boot disk and disks on array) locations were identified as '/dev/rdsk/c0tx' but now, the system sees that hard disks at '/dev/c1tx' and CDROM at '/dev/c0t0'.
Now I want to ask tow questions:
* Could this disk number change made the system unbootable previously?
* May I safely apply patch 118844-28 to the system
-ThanksHere's a similar topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=536210 also if that doesn't work you should install vesa as it also says it's not found in your log.

I did, Choose a language, choose a keyboard, configure TCP/IP, Manual TCP/IP configuration, after this I am getting a message "That directory could not be mounted from the server"
I tried giving the IPAdress of the OVM Server where the directory was mounted, nothing is working. I cannot proceed any further. -
Why does my iPad hang when writing an email? When I'm done with the email, I can't send it out and have to re-boot the iPad. This happens if the time to compose email exceeds 10 to 15 minutes.
Shut down all programs that are running in the background.
1. Double-click the Home button to see Apps in background
2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
3. Tap the minus sign to close program
4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo
Suggest you perform Step 1 to 3 at the end of every day. -

[SOLVED] New installation hangs on boot at two different places
Hello
I recently made my another attempt at installing arch on a new desktop build. Previous successful attempts were old laptops.
I followed the Beginner's Guide on the Arch wiki.
Currently it stops at one of two places in the boot process:
1. [ OK ] Found device Samsung_SSD_850_EVO_500GB BOOTARCH
Starting File System Check on /dev/sdb6…
2. [ OK ] Started Journal Service
[ OK ] Started udev Kernel Device Manager
I can not consistently recreate either scenario, but it seems to be random which of the two places it stops. Cold boot and CTRL ALT Delete. I doubt that has anything to do with it, but thought I'd add it anyway.
Current setup:
Hardware:
Motherboard - ASUS Z97 Pro (using ethernet adapter and sound on here)
Processor - Intel 4790K
Memory - 16 GB
Graphics - Gigabyte G1 Nvidia GTX 970 SLI x2
Storage - Samsung 850 SSD 500 GB and WD Black HDD 3 TB
I've also configured it to use a static IP
I started this journey by using the live Gparted CD to create partitions. I created two partitions on the SSD. One for windows 8.1 and one for linux. I then created two partitions on the HDD. One for windows, one for linux.
I installed windows 8.1 first. It divided up the partition I gave it. I am able to run Windows. Once that was done I began installing Arch.
I used the Feb 2015 ISO from the torrent.
Current partition scheme for linux:
sda1 /home
sda3 /swap
sda4 /var
sdb1 /
sdb6 /boot
sda is the HDD and sdb is the SSD
The other partitions not listed are for windows. To boot into windows, I use F8 to choose the windows boot manager partition. It currently defaults to the linux partition.
During the install, I mounted the root partition first. I then created directories for each of the other partitions and then mounted them. Home, var, and root are all ext4. Boot is FAT32, and Swap is swap.
I read where I made a couple of mistakes the first attempt on this computer and did a wipe and reinstall again. First mistake was not knowing that /boot needed to be FAT. I then learned that /swap does not need to be in the fstab. I also learned that a FAT partition can not use UUID in the fstab so I took that out and just used /dev/sdb6 instead.
I have run out of things to search for at this point and need help to continue moving forward.
Bellow is the current /etc/fstab. It was generated using
genfstab -U -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
and then edited as noted above
#/dev/sdb1 LABEL=archroot
UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
#/dev/sdb6 LABEL=BOOTARCH
#UUID=xxxxxxxxx
/dev/sdb6 /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
# /dev/sda1 LABEL=linux\134x20home
UUID=xxxxxxxx /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
#/dev/sda4 LABEL=archvar
UUID=xxxxxxxxxx /var ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
#/dev/sda3
#UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxxx none swap defaults 0 0
Thanks for any help that can be provided
Jason
Last edited by p2ranger (2015-02-14 22:20:14)I tried removing gummiboot and installed GRUB2. That didn't work.
As to the UUID's, I just typed in xxxxx's for the post because I didn't feel like transcribing random letters and numbers.
So after reading Head_on_a_Stick's suggestion, I redid my partitions and reinstalled arch again following the Beginner's wiki page and using gummiboot
New Partitions are as follows:
sda1 /home
sda3 /swap
sda4 /var
sdb1 /
sdb3 /boot (originally created from windows install)
Also, I took a screenshot from Gparted of the two disks if there is any info on there that may be of use
