Hang at Shut Down... When exactly are drives safely unmounted?

My Mac often hangs at shut down (like many others). I typically get all icons, dock, and menu bar removed and am left with the desktop picture, or sometimes I'll get to the blue screen (after the desktop picture has gone) and get the circle made of straight lines that just continually loop.
My question is: Have the drives unmounted and therefore aren't potentially damaged due to the power being forcefully cut off (holding the power button), or are they still mounted and therefore possibly damaged requiring (to be safe) another round of DiskWarrior magic?
I'm getting tired of spending all of my time running DiskWarrior. Are these fixes necessary?
any thoughts are welcome and appreciated!

Hi! I'd be concerned because the last command that the OS gives at shutdown is for the drive heads to "park" after which the power to them is turned off. If they are not "parking" the heads properly it could cause problems. I'd investigate unhooking the external attached devices to see if any of them are hanging the shutdown but also if you have several volumes or drives attached to the computer if often takes a seemingly long time for the OS to complete the disk chores at shutdown. Have you waited at least 5 min+ to see if it will shutdown? Also if Diskwarrior shows anything in "RED" then the directories definitely are having problems and should be corrected. Often a directory will suffer damage but continue to mount and function until the corruption finally gets so bad it crashes. Regular use of DW usually keeps them in good shape. Tom

  • Sound does'nt shut down when earphones are plugged in. Ipad Mini.

Sound doesn't shut down when earphones are plugged in. Same earphones used with other ipad or iphone give no problem.

might be a hardware issue with the headphone jack. Try cleaning it with a dry soft toothbrush to remove lint and dust.
    If that doesn't help:
Try doing a hard reset for the iPad: Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't solve the issue, you could also try backing up the device and restoring the device as new.
In that case, follow the steps in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
If you're not able to restore the device, this one might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Using that last article will erase everything on the device, so make sure you have a backup!
    Good luck

  • G5 shuts down when Portable external drive connected to Fire wire port

Hi, I hope somebody can help me. I have a 100G lacie portable external HD that I use to back up my files regularly. It worked until today, I plug it in, I was able to save some files, and then the computer shut down. I restarted it and it did the same thing. Black screen. nothing. I have another External HD with its own power supply connected to the same computer and that one works. I tried plugging the Portable HD to the back of the one with Power supply and it shut down as well. Then I plugged it in the back of my 19" LCD, same thing. So I though that the portable HD was bad, I went and bought another drive, a verbatim, and same thing happen. I then plugged my lacie drive to another computer, a G4, and it works which leads me to think that the problem is in the G5, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thought this may be the issue, problem is the USB3.0 connector is 2 micro USB side by side in a single plastic moulding, have searched for separate USB cables but cannot find them.

  • My new mac Mini (Feb, 2013) shuts down when we are listening to iTunes or Pandora.  Any thoughts?

After listing to iTunes or Pandora, our mini shuts down and requires us to log in again.  The mini was purchased in Feb of this year.  Any thoughts?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Advanced... ▹ Log out after … minutes of inactivity: Off
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, you may need to click it to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
Also check the Energy Saver preference pane for scheduled logouts or shutdowns.

  • LabView Hangs and Shuts Down When Indexing

    Hello all,
Something very strange is happening.  Below is the part of the VI having problem.  The VI runs and saves normally when it is like what it is below.  But when I right click on that square on the loop to change to "enable indexing" and save, labview crashes.  I am trying to collect the data and eventually write to a file, but labview won't let me index.

    Hi Bladhart,
now you gave us just one more information: It's LV-RT... Do you mind to name the version too?
Can you reproduce the problem when replacing the subvis by a simple "random" function or using a cluster constant?
You always should give as much information as possible when asking for help!

  • After installing Photoshop, it opens but shuts down when files are opened.

Photoshop installed from CS5. After opening new document or opening an image it closes with a message saying "Adobe CS 5 has stopped working"
It has been uninstalled and re installed several times.

try resetting preferences by holding down shift-ctrl-alt (win) or shift-cmd-alt (mac) while starting ps.  you'll see a confirmation dialog if done correctly.
if that fails uninstall, clean and reinstall per, Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • X200 hangs during restart or shut down when connected to ultrabase

My X200 hangs during a Windows restart or shut down when I'm connected to my ultrabase.  The laptop appears to go through most of the processes to restart/shut down but eventually hangs at a blue screen with unmoveable cursor (note, not a Windows BSOD). I'm forced to perform a hard shut down to turn off the laptop.
This hang at restart/shut down only occurs when I'm connected to the ultrabase.

Just as a thing to try, and this is assuming that you all have an integrated camera, please try this camera driver and let the board know the results:

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Server Shutting down, when the Concurrent Users are more

    Hi,
We are working on EP 5.0 SP5, our problem is that if the concurrent users are more automatically our LDAP or Portal is shutting down (approximately 300 or above..).
For this problem… where we have to check? help can be appreciated...
    Regards,
    Sudhir

    Hi,
If you portal is shutting down when it is getting a high load I would look at the memory settings defined in the configtool (if you are using a service or the startupframework) or the go.bats if you are running them manually. I would assume that the problems comes from the java process not being able to get enough memory, so try increasing the heapsize parameter Xmx (?)

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • ITunes shuts down when I connect my iPod 30gb

I desperately need help. Recently my computer crashes and I reformated it. So I had to reinstall iTunes. Ever since then iTunes shuts down when I connect my iPod 30gb. A windows error message appears saying iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I am unable to update my iPod which drives me crazy. Somebody please help!
I browsed through some threads which have similar problems as I do, but I am unable to reply in any. It says: This topic has been archived - replies are not allowed.
There's this thread here about the problem I am facing but I doesn't seem to understand the solution to it.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1630589
    Can somebody please help me?

A windows error message appears saying iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.
let's get a crash log from itunes, and send it to the Apple engineers for a look.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
Generate the crash, collect the crash log, and and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing

  • IMac shuts down when using Safari 2.0.4

My iMac shuts down when I visit certain websites such as Pogo or video sites. Took it to the Apple store and of course the problem wouldn't replicate there. They kept it to check out the scripts and logs to see if they could find a problem - without success; although they did suggest my house is haunted. Brought it home and it quit again.
We thought perhaps we were getting interference from other wireless devices and unplugged our cordless phone which worked for a day. The computer always turns back on so its more of an annoyance than a real problem, but I'm baffled.
It also happened once when I was downloading from the iTunes store, but is most prevalent with Safari.
We have wireless internet connected via ethernet to an Airport Express.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi Barry -
Yes I do live near a ghost town (kinda) - Virginia City, NV. And I did tell any unwanted visitors to leave.
Actually, in the last year, they have replaced the Super drive, power supply, inverter and logic board. The only reason I'm not thinking power issues is that it only happens when I'm in Safari or iTunes. I would use Firefox except I've got java issues with that. I can (and do) use the machine for other things all day long without problems. I can use Safari all day long as long as I'm not playing on Pogo or certain video sites. Maybe Pogo is haunted?
It also doesn't happen on my husband's iMac on the other side of the house. Is there something that could cause enough interference to actually make the machine shut down? Oh, the antennae for the satellite TV and internet are on the roof directly above me, if that would have anything to do with it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Aperture shuts down when uploading photos to Facebook

Aperture shuts down when uploading photos to Facebook.
only loads part of the Album?

This is discussed extensively in the thread at:
