Hang ups and jerkiness in iMovie HD export to mini dv camera

I have a big problem-- while I am trying to export a TV show created in *_iMovie HD 6.0.3 (267.2)*_ to my *Sony DCR TRV-900*, which I have done many times.
Suddenly, there is jerkiness upon export to my camera. My iMoive video which plays back normally on the coputer looks jerky and almost slo mo while going to camera, and is also like than when the mini dv is played back. However the audio quality seems to be ok on the mini dv.
FYI, this show is made up of a series of Full Quality Quicktime chunks (ie individual scenes that I made and exported thru iMovie as Full Quality QuickTime, and then re-imported as individual Quicktime video chunks so not to tax the exporting capacity of iMovie too much).
The show is about 26 minutes, and the size of the iMovie file is about 26 gigs. The file resides on a Maxtor external drive with firewire 400.
I have plugged and replugged, turned camera on and off, and changed mini dv tapes a couple of times...
Does anybody out there know what is up with this jerky outputting problem?
Thanks
Michael in LA

Not sure why you should have this problem now, but you can export the entire movie as a new Full Quality Quicktime, and then reimport that into a new iMovie and export that new iMovie to your camcorder.
Just be sure you have enough free space on your hard drive where your iMovie is located.
.....that MIGHT be the problem with the jerking......how much free space do you have?

  • A lot of hang-ups and disconnected WRT120N in all installations with multiples Wireless Routers

i'm so tired, i have a lot of installations (school, university,..) that have various WRT120N (4,6,8,12,...) all routers have the latest (no is very new) firmware 1.0.0.4 build2, and in a installation all routers have the same SSID and diferents channel.
Every day all routers hang-up and the user need to stop and start every router. When a router hang-up this can't receive any ping, telnet,web,... across the wired LAN (ping timeout) but all links seem correctly and SSID is published.
I try another brand in this scenario and work fine.
I try to chat with linksys support but is'nt possible, nobody know my problem ?

Sorry I missed the Access Points description - I'm wondering  - because there are so many routers - if there may be an issue with the channels and wireless overlap. One IEEE 802.11 "N" can typically communicate within a radius of 70m indoors 250m outdoors. However, the actual range of communication can vary significantly, depending on such variables as indoor or outdoor placement, height above ground, nearby obstructions, other electronic devices that might actively interfere with the signal by broadcasting on the same frequency, type of antenna, the current weather, operating radio frequency, and the power output of devices. I'm thinking that you will have to separate the channels on these ... I don't know for sure why the other routers worked - maybe only one was changed at a time instead of all the routers in the whole network ... at any rate if you have overlap on frequencies there may be something there ... especially when using these as AP's. I believe this router has the ability to change frequencies in the the advanced wireless settings under the wireless tab.
Just shooting from the hip here.

  • Hang-ups and chaos in tiger?

Hello, Starting yesterday all of my programs started having the beachball rolling. I have had to forcequit all of them at various times. Sometimes I waited 20 minutes before they actually were usable. But once they are up, they are very slow.
I have repaired permissions and did do a techtool delux scan that came up with this message.
    Surface Scan
    Failed (Error = -4)
The Surface Scan test will scan the disk for bad blocks. TechTool Deluxe can map out the offending blocks so that they are not used in the future.
Media defects cause this test to fail. You should consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
However, even my expose, and techtool end up floating the ball... I can get to email if I wait 20 minutes, so at least I can post this.
Any ideas? Never had this problem in Panther? And it is slowing my production down completely. Save me!? Any help would be deeply appreciated. thanks!

Hi Michael, I wouldn't worry yet. TechTool Deluxe is not compatible with 10.4 Tiger you should contact AppleCare for updated disks.

  • App store hang-ups

I've only had my iPad for a week but have already had a couple of problems with the app store. This morning, when I tried to download a couple of apps, the waiting box would just show up on the home screen with a blank loading bar. The same was true for an update I tried to install. Similarly, last week at the app store, anytime I tried to navigate somewhere I would just get a white screen with "Loading" and the spinning rays with no progress. In both cases, things seemed back to normal 15 minutes later or so. Also, in both cases, there were no problems with my wifi - I checked that. Are these kinds of hang ups and freezes normal for the store, or could there be some sort of problem with my iPad causing this?

I did a reset, which didn't immediately solve anything. The problem just disappeared about 15 minutes after it started. I wouldn't think it's a hardware problem since other apps and Internet connectivity all seemed to be working at top speed while the app store problem was happening. I guess I was curious if other people had experienced app problems in their time with their ipads.

  • Can I create a custom output settings from Compressor 4 and use it as a export setting in iMovie 10.0.4?

I'm currently using iMovie 8.0.6 However I want to upgrade by downloading iMovie 10.0.4 but I'm upset that iMovie 10.0.4 doesn't give us "Export using Quicktime" option like iMove 9.0.6 and lower versions do (look at picture below)
So I wanted to know could I create a Compressor 4 output setting and use that as a exporting option in iMovie 10.0.4?

    Yes and No:
No, you can not - as in FCPX - create your own 'Share Destinations', iM lacks (officially) any APIs too teach it new tricks.
Yes, export from with iM in a high-res format (e.g. 1080 Apple devices), and use that as source for any Compressor output Same workflow, for free, would do Mpeg Streamclip, the most recommended converter tool for MacOs....

  • Keynote export and issues with iMovie import

I told my PC workers I could do a movie for my job in 1 day. They said no way. And I could easily have done that BUT my MAC is FUBAR on file import from keynote to imovie...
I have Keynote 08, imovie 08 and QT 7.6.4 and did a simple slide show in Keynote. I tried to export to mp4, H264, and jpeg into imovie and strangely enough....it occasionally works. Many times I cannot select the files to import because they are grayed out. I have tried many things and again it sometimes lets me import. However, after import I get the clips in the event, and they seem fine. But when I drag them into the project they do not play..they just show a frame or they default to the last clip of video and then skip (in the proper time) to the next video. It is like they are there but the video cannot be resolved. The keynote is just text with build in and out effects and simple transitions.
If I go to Jpeg 2000 or DV (notDVCPAL) they imported OK but were very jagged and severe loss of font quality.
I do not expect this in MAC products. I cannot understand why keynote has a menu setup to export to everything but iMovie....
    HELP!

To be clear, the imported video seems to run in the event area. I drag it into the project and it LOOKS like it is OK. And if I drag the cursor over the play area it all appears OK. However, if I hit "play" by itself, as the movie plays it goes fine until it hits the imported keynote section, and here you see the very first frame..and that frame only or nothing....until the next raw video clip (which plays fine).

Please explain what you mean by "hang-ups"?
What type of application causes the "hang-ups"?
Did you make any hardware changes to your PC?
Did you do a clean Window 7 installation or just used the HP recovery disks?

I have an iMac 24" system. I just recently installed MAC OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) on my system. Since doing so, my system consistently hangs. Particularly when using iMovie and iPhoto. I have to power off my system to get it running again. Any suggestions on what I can do  to address this situation.

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.
    Hope this helps

  • What is wrong with FF it keeps closing up and numerous hang ups awful

I have so many problems with this browser - they just keep multiplying. Today, Firefox started closing by itself without my doing anything. This is added to the constant script running errors and other hang ups that constantly slow down my work and are driving me crazy. Maybe I'd just better go back to IE? I've tried your help "fixes" and they don't. Very frustrating.

    Did Firefox crash?

    There's Toast.

    $79.99
Final Cut Pro X will also burn DVDs.
    $299.99
How large is your movie?  Is it possible that you could output it as a QuickTime file and then burn that as a data DVD?  Is uploading to YouTube an option?

  • More on Pan and zoom jerkiness in iMovie / iDVD

This is yet another post on this subject that for me is becoming somewhat frustrating. I thought, with the advice I had received from Karsten Schlüter and others, that the problem of jerkiness had been solved (see earlier posts from me re this and related matters). This has proved not to be so.
Today I spent a great deal of time going through every scene/chapter of the 'final' iDVD version of my Photo to Movie/iMovieHD/iDVD project and noted that some video clips encoded in MPEG4 were smooth whilst others were jerky. Similarly, some encoded in DV were smooth whilst others were jerky.
Subsequently I opened the 'Movies' folder on my eMac and played one particularly jerky DV encoded PtoM project clip using QuickTime and - you guessed it - no jerkiness. Did the same with a particularly jerky MPEG encoded PtoM clip - again no jerkiness. Tried the same routine with other jerky clips with identical results. In other words, both the DV and MPEG4 encoded clips produced by Photo to Movie are apparently not at the root of the problem.
Presumably some bug is intermittently causing jerkiness after PtoM clips have been imported into iMovie, and/or the encoding process during the final production process in iDVD is causing the jerkiness. On all occasions when these programs have been running I have ensured that no other programs/files are open and that energy and screen savers are off.
As when working on this same project in iMovie I had previously had trouble with stutter when editing - due to a large number of audio clips (see related posts and responses from iMovie guru Karl Petersen) - I wonder whether audio encoding may have something to do with my subsequent video encoding problems.
I will very much appreciate any comments and suggestions.

I might suggest reading up on MPEG compression and DVDs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_2 and Googling will produce a whole slew of articles on GOP and compression and so on.
Essentially, everything will look better in it's native format. As example, DV material clocks in a 13GB/hour. This can be compressed to fit on one 4.3GB optical disc. So somethings gotta give. Now the more you know about how this compression works, the better your final results will be. iDVD takes your material and compresses it to an MPEG 2 format. MPEG two is NOT frame independent while DV is. This means out of 30-frames of DV material, you have 2 frames of MPEG material... this can cause issues as you have discovered! And there really isn't an easy answer other than knowing how it all works and developing a workflow that works for you within these confines.
    Good Luck,
    Mike

  • IMovie 11 Exporting Movie and No File and External Drive Falling Asleep

Help!  Had a frustrating day and night with iMovie, which has been happening a lot lately.
We are making a highlight video for my son from his many sports events which are on a 3TB fixed external drive and a 2TB portable one.  After putting the highlight video together with clips from both drives it is time to Export the movie which I am doing to the 3TB Drive.  However after completion, there is no file anywhere.  Upon taking the same steps with same filename, there is no warning about existing file.  I have tried to export to local drive on Mac as well.
Also, if I do a higher quality export it takes a while and the external portable drive falls asleep.  Any way to keep it awake without sitting there and accessing the drive manually.  I looked in the drive settings through the mac and it does not tell it to put the drive to sleep.  In hindsight we should have had all videos on the 3TB drive but I am afraid to move them now.
And...we put some arrows in pointing to him with a freeze frame and PIP.  The arrows are there when I select them manually but don't appear when running through the movie as we preview the entire footage.
    HELP!!!!   Thanks

  • New to Apple and Aperture-I am surprised at the lack of integration between Aperture and applications as iMovie.

Aperture slideshow is terrible in terms of entering any text on a photo.  It appears that you have to export the photos from Aperture to the desktop to import the photos to iMovie to be able to add quite good text to individual photos. While I am new to the Apple system (I am quite knowledgable in Windows), I am surprised that iMovie cannot import an Album or a Project from Aperture.  It does not appears possible to to copy and paste from Aperture to the project created in iMovie without exporting to the desktop.  This seems like a step backwards.
Since I come from Windows I will be importing most of my photos into Lightroom3 and doing  most of my work.  Yet, there are features in Aperture that I like and will probably use both for the time being.  I am using Aperture 3 and iLife11.  New Macbook Pro

I read the manuals and watched the tutorials on the Apple web site as well as F1 in Aperture and never saw a reference to using Windows menu to list photos in iMovie.  I check this and it does seem to work.  however, you must admit that the procedure for adding text on a photo is limited as compare to iMovie.  Maybe, it is because I want to add text to a photo for posting on Mobileme or other photo posting sites so friends can view the photos in a slideshow or one by one.
I assume that you can answer this question. Since I was exporting photos to the desktop so I could import them in iMovie, if I delete the folder on the desktop will they disappear form the project in iMovie?  Since I do not like a lot of folders on the desktop can I move them to the Pictures folder and not loose the project links in iMovie?

  • Is there a way to use the common J-K-L keystrokes to play forward and backward in iMovie '11?

Is there a way to use the common J-K-L keystrokes to play forward and backward in iMovie '11? Most editing apps--like Final Cut Pro, QuickTime Pro, Avid, etc.--use this convention. I find not having it slows editing down considerably?  I don't see it listed in keyboard shortcuts; is there any way to add it?  Thanks!

Why can I no longer drag and drop in iMovie 11? This means I can't select transitions, titles, or even move clips within the project. Never had this problem before.

Serious bugs in iM 11 with numerous lock-ups and crashes.  I shouldn't have upgraded -- now I'm pulling out my hair trying to complete a video project with it.
