Hanging Bball on Save..intermittent

Hi All,
I recently added about 12 more Multitimbral Software Instruments housing VEP's to my template. There are about 36 instances all housing VEP. The VEP's are on various PC's on network, NOT local.
These new 12 instances connect to a PC that is new to my rig. After adding these last 12, I get these weird beachball hangs when I hit save. About 1 time in 12. Have to force quit.
All VEP connections are in "DECOUPLE" mode. Logic does not save the VEP data.
The Logic file size is small, about 3 meg.
Same problem in 9.1.3 and 9.1.4.
Same problem with two different system drives in the Mac.
Rebuilt prefs, zapped p-ram. All the usual.
Buffer at 256
Process buffer range Small (tried Medium)
Maybe this is a VEP forum question, but can connecting to a network PC over VEP affect the host Mac machine this way? All other VEP PC's are fairly benign to the system overall.
Thanks for any insight.

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
If you updated to Safari 5 and this started happening after the update, it's possible you have third party Safari add-ons that aren't compatible with Safari 5.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If third party plugins aren't the issue, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and move the "cache.db" file to the Trash. Relaunch Safari and try File/Save. If that didn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
And repair disk permissions...
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent

InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent, and a document that hangs InDesign, after restarting InDesign, will open fine. I found the following track, Re: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding  for instructions to "force a hang into a crash" and am posting the crash logs to  pastebin.com
This is the sample process report OPI_Sample9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
This is the corresponding InDesign Crash log OPI_InDesignCrashLog9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
I am hoping that someone might be able to read the logs and tell me what is causing InDesign to hang
For more background information we are using Mac OS X 10.10.3, Within indesign we are using an editorial management software called "NewsEngin GPS" that utilizes Rohohiko's ADIP ToolAssistant plugin and an advertising management plugin "Pagelink" from Mactive/NewsCycle Solutions. These are the only 3 third party vendors that are being used and of course all claim that their products separately are stable under Mac OS 10.10 and InDesign CS6 v8.1.

Did you try to export the INDD file to IDML, open that and work with the new files?

  • CS6 hanging during image save

    Windows 7, 64-bit, PS CS6 13.0.1
OK, I KNOW there's gotta be a discussion of this, but I can't find it in here, so.........
VERY intermittently, when I do a save (or possible a save as), on a .psd file, Photoshop hangs.  As in "0%" progress.  It's happened probably 3 or 4 times in the past year.  I DO have the "Save in Background" thing turned on.
This time, just to see if it was doing anything interesting, I opened the Task Manager and went into the Resource Monitor.  Yes, PS is using the normal 7 - 10 GB of memory (today, since I only have one image open, it's only using 7GB or so), and there's nothing else going on.  I have LR4 open, but the resource monitor says Photoshop isn't writing to any disk - or reading.  If I just sit there and don't touch anything, the system goes quiet and NOTHING's happening...
SO, I went to lunch and left it sitting at "0%", just in case it'd wake up.  Hour and a half later, it's STILL sitting there.
I went out and found a workaround, so it's no longer a big problem, but is there SOMETHING I should change or set or NOT do that'll prevent PS from doing this?  It doesn't crash, it's not hung (I can open and close and edit and do whatever, but THAT image is stuck).  Anyhow, I do a "Duplicate" and save the duplicate image, and that appears to work fine.
So, anything I should be doing differently?

Check your PDF settings and your document DPI. Sounds like you mess this part up...

  • Hangs up in "Save As" dialog

    Can anybody confirm the following:
    In 32-bit Windows XP SP3:
Open a document in Adobe Reader X 10.1.1
Go to menu File->Save As -> PDF... The dialog "Save As" will open up
At this point, any further action - specifying file name and clicking "OK", or selecting another folder in the bar on the left, or clicking "Cancel" - results in hanging for several minutes.

    1. any PDF
    2. I think I saw it returning to normal, but I just tried it right now, and it has been hanging already for 10 minutes, not consuming any CPU.
    3. Yes, this happens only when protection mode is on. If I turn it off, the problem disappears. If I turn it back on, the problem reappears. Here's the log of protected mode up to the moment where it hung.

  • WRT54G V7 Hangs on Adminstration Save Settings

Configured WRT54G connecting to ADSL modem.
    1. All works fine, except, wanted to change password for admin and each time I tried and pressed save settings the device "hangs" (cannot get back to any config page) and has to be reset via the rest button.  Tried this about three times with the same result.
    2. Thought an update of firmware might be a starting point, but when asked for version there is no version WRT54G V7, which is what the lable underneath says.  Same with product registration.

try following link for the latest firmware for the router...check whether it works for you or not and let me know...

Experienced several occurances of Photoshop CS6 file save hang during background file save and autosave on mac OSX 10.6.8.
The file save percentage counter initially showed progress, but then just stopped.
Close window and quit application commands were blocked by the background save.

The files were large .psb files (>2Gb)
Unfortunately no dump available as application was terminated with force quit.
No problems experienced with these files under CS5.

  • Adobe reader hangs forever on save

    I downloaded following form:
    http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/downloads/itr/ITR2_Version1.0.pdf
After filling it or say even after filling one entry if I try to save the form (ctrl-s), Adobe Reader seems to hang forever.
Initially it shows lots of harddisk activity for 4-5 mins and after that harddisk activity stops but it keeps on using CPU to almost 100%. And then (after waiting for 10mins) I killed it.
The file was not modified at all even after 10mins.
I use Adobe Reader 7.0.8 (tar.gz) for Linux on FC6. Can someone confirm if same happens with 7.0.9 as I am not allowed to download/install it.
Do I have to apply any patch? Any idea when Adobe Reader 8.1 for Linux be launched?
    Thanks in advance.
    Amish.

Ctrl-S saves directly on same file which was opened hence obviously it wont show 'Save As' dialogue box. But it doesnt suspend for sure as otherwise it wont show lots of harddisk activity.
I even tried File-Exit or Ctrl-Q. I even tried File-Close (Ctrl-W). In both cases it asked me to Save file or not. I clicked Yes and again after lots of harddisk activity nothing happened. Harddisk activity stopped after sometime but CPU was still used continuously. Reader simply hanged with gray window.
Just now I tried same form on one FC2 machine and there too same problem occured. Waited for about 10mins.
Were you able to save with same form?
    Thanks for your quick response.

  • Acrobat X hangs when using "Save as compressed pdf" function

I have several users who, when working remotely over VPN, have Acrobat X hang when trying to use the "Save as compressed PDF" to save to either a network drive or to their local machine. The system works fine while in the office however. All other programs and save functionality is fine while connected to the VPN, and I am able to save files directly to the network share or local machine outside of Acrobat. I have removed and reinstalled Acrobat and the program will complete a save normally the first time it's used after the reinstalltion, but will then start failing and hanging again after that. I believe I am at v10.0.7.
Any and all insight will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, that’s the option! Sorry don’t have a copy of the software on my own PC to verify against.

  • Time Capsule Shared drive- Bonjour hangs, mapped drives work intermittantly

I am having an issue in a Mac/PC environment with a Time Capsule. Naturally, the Macs have no problem.
I was able to resolve some issues. Initially, the PCs could not connect to the Time Capsule. It turned out that the Time Capsule had a name that was 20+ characters long. Now, I can get them to log in, but the connection is very intermittant. The particulars:
1 - Everything is on a 192.168.y.z. network, and the PCs are in a workgroup (small company, no domain). PCs are running Vista and XP Pro.
2 - Everything is wired, no wireless
3 - The PCs can print through Bonjour and I can also administer the Time Capsule from the Airport Utility on a Windows machine.
3 - If I map a drive, Z:\\192.168.y.z\TCShare and then log in as Guest / Device password, sometimes it will connect other times not. If I get a connection, then log another PC onto the device, I lose the connection on the first one and the other never connects.
4 - Bonjour never connects from the PCs. If I try with guest access, it says that I need Netbios enabled (it is and I have the Time Capsule address in WINS). If I try the password, Bonjour hangs and eventually says Not Responding.
I've tried various fixes on this and other forums, but Im at a loss at this point. I can provide any additional information, just let me know.
    Sincerely,
    Brian Fink

I have a 1TB TC currently working as my router for a Macbook, Vaio and Dell laptops. I can only access the files from the Macbook. I tried installing Bonjour on the Vaio, but still cannot access the saved files...maybe the install was not good? Any ideas? I tried the online Bonjour download...I do not have the disc.

  • Mac Hangs on Screen Saver after 10.4.4 Upgrade

I scanned the board looking for this particular problem, but could not find it.
I recently applied the 10.4.4 upgrade to my iMac G4 (details below), and the upgrade seemed to go off without a hitch. However, I immediately noticed that my machine would often (but not always) hang when the screen saver kicked on. When it does hang, it hangs hard, meaning that I have to power the machine off to regain control.
Before the upgrade, the machine was working perfectly with no hanging. I repaired permissions and repaired the disk from the boot DVD both before and after the installation. I've also cleared the Safari cache, which was suggested in another post discussing a slightly different problem.
Is there anyone else out there with the same problem, or preferably, with a solution?

It could just be the driver has data corruption within it.
Anytime you have to force shut down, check to make sure the directory is in OK condition:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
When Repair Disk finds things to repair, that's the most common type of data corruption that can happen. Other types of data corruption are more insideous and may require a reinstall of the operating system. Sometimes data corruption which can't be repaired by Repair Disk, but is noticed by it needs to be repaired by Alsoft Disk Warrior. Note, repairing the directory should only be done on a system t hat is backed up.
In the worst case scenario, you may need to replace the hard drive as it is beginning to die. Sometimes issues like you've been having spinnning beachball you really need to wait out at least half an hour to verify that the computer just hasn't become busy doing something from third party software installs. If we knew more about what's installed on your system we could tell if that might be one of the causes.

  • Old project re-opens, but hangs system on save

When saving a project file in CS 5.0 the software hangs at the saving screen. this project was fine 2 months ago.
Using an external USB 3.0 drive for both project and media.
    HELP!!!

Ok thanks so maybe hundreds is a bit over the top, but given the time I have spent trying to resolve this issue, and if it has to be done again form scratch, yes it will probabaly clock that...
Back to the solutions you suggested:
    2) Tried to open the project inside another and even sequences but it wont locate the media, I direct them to the files then it just sits there and does nothing.
    3) I am not familiar at all with transcoding, can you suggest a workflow.
    4) re-cutting isnt an option, it worked fine one day then not the next, its a bug I ned to fix.....
I am convinced its a problem with storing the media and working from my external drives...? Again never had a problem and others work fine but not this project ?

  • Excel save as pdf hangs when launched through a watch folder

    Hi there,
I've configured a watch folder to launch a batch file which launch a .exe file I've written in C++
In this application I launch Excel which open a .XLS document which contains macros.
At the end of the computations there is a macro which save as pdf.
At this point everything hangs and I have to cancel the job I've created for the watch folder.
If I disable the watch folder and I place the starting file inside the watch folder
and I manually launch the .bat file (which usually is launched by the watch folder) everything works perfectly.
I really really hope there will be someone here coming with a solution for me.
By the way on the windows forum I've got a very disappointing answer where they stated it was probably a fault of my application.
Well fortunately that was not the problem because
I can reproduce the problem even removing my application from the equation so now we have cleared
the issue is not casued by my application.
So if you want to try it yourself just follow the steps below:
    1) create an excel document so that after you open it it automatically run a save as pdf operation and close excel. (let's call this document "PRINT_TEST.xls")
    2) create a batch file named "Excel_launcher.bat" and write the command
    ""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\EXCEL.EXE" "C:\teststampapdf\PRINT_TEST.xls""
    3) Now create a watch folder job that execute that batch file.
    something like "C:\watchfolderX\Excel_launcher.bat"
    4) now create a watch folder that uses that job and for file filter use "*.txt" enable it and start it
    5) now launch manually the batch file and you'll see that it print the pdf and closes itself
    6) drop a txt file inside the watch folder you've created and you'll see it hangs at the save as pdf operation.
This is something that have to be fixed and it's due to excel.
I can launch and save documents with all the application I want but excel so that's the problem.
Please take a look and keep me updated I badly need to find a solution for this issue.
    THANK YOU in advance,
    Davide

    Hi Davide,
This is no the right forum for your issue. I think you can consult this issue on some Excel end-user related forum.

  • AppleFileServer process keeps hanging - stalls clients' AFP connections

Since moving to SL Server (first used on 10.6.4, now 10.6.6), Mac clients have been complaining of spinning beachballs when accessing the server. This appears to have gradually got worse over time, as more of the clients have been upgraded from Tiger & Leopard to SL (we're now running 6 Tiger, 2 Leopard and 8 SL clients). It's driving us nuts, as it happens frequently to all users (all designers), several times daily.
There seems to be no common trigger from the client side for the symptoms, i.e. not restricted to any one client, any one app being used, nor any particular action on their part. It can happen while opening, saving, copying or moving files from/to the server, but very intermittently, so hard to reproduce on demand.
Indeed the same hang happens on the server when I'm the only one connected to it at night, from just about any of the client Macs, whether they are SL, Leopard or Tiger. If I do a test file copy from/to the server, the AFS process will often stick at some point, though not always, even when using the same test files/folders each time. Have tried various different folder/file combinations during the tesing, with pretty much no difference in behaviour, nor any consistency.
Having searched the web, I can't turn up any hard explanation for what's happening, nor a fix. Others out there are having all sorts of hassles with AFP, SMB, etc, but all in different configs & flavours it seems.
Anyway, I did finally manage to find a correlation on the server... when any of the clients hangs during open, save or copy, the AppleFileServer process on the server shows as "stuck" in the output of the 'top' command (top -o state). There are a couple of other processes that stick sometimes, but they have no obvious hit on performance or stability (these are usually launchd, DirectoryServices & msd, and no correlation to the AFS stick as far as I've seen).
Whilst 'stuck' like this, the AFS process CPU load mostly shows as 0.0%, and eventually frees itself up, with AFP then working normally again for all users. So, there are no server or client crashes, but it can lock up for anything from a few seconds to several minutes at a time, and perhaps 30-50 times a day, during which time no-one can load, save or browse files on the server
Am now very close to doing a full re-install of SL, though I doubt it will help, as the problem's been there since I upgraded the server to a new XServe with SL 10.6.4. But first I was wondering if anyone here might have the same/similar problem, and throw any more light on it?
The Macs are used on a corporate WAN, with Active Directory logins (but the problem still happens when connecting with the server Admin a/c). Networked Home folders are not being used - all users have managed user Homes locally. Users are located in both London and Amsterdam, but the problem occurs for all.
Interestingly, am seeing similar client hangs when testing with SMB as an alternative to AFP (but didn't try that with the top command yet), so I'm suspecting this might be related to the networking layer of things, rather than AFP specifically? Not exactly a safe assumption I know, especially as thus far I can't even tell whether it's originating from the clients or the server side of things. I'd put my money on a bugged AppleFileServer app though. We didn't get this nonsense when everything was Tiger, on the same network as now.
Short of running with Tiger on old hardware (simply not an option for us), we're stuck with SL. Countless other (mostly) recurring errors showing up in the logs (as per usual with any Mac OS), but none with so vicious a payload as this. Now desperate for a solution, but little spare time to find one.
Any suggestions, or requests for more info, please let me know. Have already tried numerous avenues, including AFP access/error logs, tcpdump, Google, etc. etc., but no clear indicator I could find.
I'm no Mac geek btw, so please be gentle!

    Hi,
You are not alone with this.
We have an OD master, separate file server (AFP with Raid attached with 2000+ users, 250 mac clients and on average 100 clients connected to network homes at a time.
All caches are redirected locally, time machine and spotlight searching disabled on the servers.
Running on 10.6.4, and working with no updates or changes nicely until...
Since December (after a clean install in July) we have really noticed the well documented (but not fixed) AFP crashes. It seems to occur for us when we have a few users using InDesign CS3 ( i have no proof of this but there is a pattern emerging). Up until december we had the most stable apple server setup i have known in 5 years, whereas afp used to just lock up completely, now it just restarts itself upon error.
Apple Premium support recommended updating to 10.6.6 before they would support us on this.
10.6.6 made it worse (slower logon times and even more crashes). Eventually they recommended to stop using Adobe programmes (in an art and design college).
We are currently testing with mobile home directories on this setup.
We have been using a similar setup (smaller though) on our music tech campus but with mobile homes, with great success for over a year now, although there are only about 50 concurrent logons on average there.
Well worth looking into as i have no faith in apple fixing this as most of the new server users are using very small setups with 10 clients max (home users with mac minis??).
I will keep you posted on how i get on because this really is a show stopper for us several times a week and it is really embarrassing for me to say to the customers i dont know what to do.
    Regards,
    Kev
