Hanging Mac

I've been using an old macbook black until three weeks ago when I switched to macpro7,1 when i noticed right on day 2 that this one stalls by hanging. Some of the patterns I noted were:
1. when i'd close the notebook with my iphone still tethered to it and then opening the notebook later without the iphone.
2.when id be opening a lot of apps and pages in safari, the cursor starts to get unexpected responses like non-stop highlighting and holding on to an icon on the dock.
oftentimes, i would have to resort to turning off the power. Just now, i did one thing when this happened again: i let fan cool the bottom of the notebook and it kinda worked.
QUESTION:
1. Is heat a factor? (mine's got case and some key board protection)
2. Is there a solution if this is a problem in the OS/software?
3. Why is there no crash report?

I have a new MacBookPro 2.66G i7, and am also experiencing hangs. In some cases the mouse is responsive and it others it is not. In either instance the finder nothing else responds.
There is no overheating in my case. I've repaired disk permissions and repaired the disk. If I encounter another hang, I'll try to reapply the latest Mac OSX combo updater.

Why does Disk Utility hang when starting? ~ Doug

    Hi, Doug.
A little more detail on how you are launching Disk Utility on the stated "G4" would help. Some more details about the specific G4, and the problems that may have led to you attempting to run Disk Utility on it would also be useful.
Try running steps 1-2 of the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Snow leopard server hangs macs when on.

So I am experiencing a weird problem. All my macs get the spinning pinwheel when my server is turned on.
If I turn off the server or unplug it from the network then every other computer works fine.
I am running Snow Leopard on everything else with all the latest updates.
I have a a mb and mbp late 2010 that this happens.
I did some dns changes a few weeks back. Other than updates that is the only change.
The dns update consisted of renaming my host name on the server and doing a changeip to update everything.
    Thanks

  • Here's a fix for Safari hanging and taking down the system..

There appears to be a serious bug in Mac OS X's lookupd which can pull the rug right out from under Mac OS X Tiger. While this bug could possibly be triggered in a number of different ways, there has been a recent rash of reports that have been tracked to some mainstream Web sites such as FoxNews.com using links to an adware site js.adsonar.com. This document describes a quick way out of the hang and a simple way to block links to js.adsonar.com from taking down Tiger again. While this doesn't fix the underlying lookupd bug itself, it prevents Mac OS X from hanging, while allowing you to continue using Web sites like FoxNews.com with full Java and JavaScript access enabled.
The symptoms of this problem are as follows:
    • You're surfing the web and the page you are on fails to completely load.
    • No further pages will load in your browser.
    • You can switch to other applications that may already be running and save any open files.
    • You can no longer launch any additional applications, their icons will bounce in the dock for a while and then they will just stop bouncing.
    • You can no longer use any other Finder functions.
    • You can no longer use command-option-escape to force quit.
    • You can not log out, restart or shut down.
Apparently these symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
If this sounds like a problem you are having, try the steps in the following link to fix it.
Mac OS X Tiger lookupd bug & adsonar fix
    Hope it helps,

    Hi Bee,
There is indeed "such a bug", though you may be fortunate enough to not be affected. Unfortunately MANY others are affected by this. I spent three days helping track this down (many of those 38 posts were while tracking it down in the Tiger discussions) and find a fix to this and thought that others might benefit by my efforts... By the way it's NOT a Safari bug, it happens in any browser, it's a "lookupd" bug which may be triggered by surfing to certain sites which contain links to "js.adsonar.com", which if you have JavaScript enabled can hang lookupd and take down your entire system... consider yourself lucky that it hasn't happened to you...
Here is some background information if you don't believe me:

I only posted this fix to the specific threads where people were having Safari hang, incase it might help them. Forgive me for trying to help them... I thought that was the point of these boards and that was why they started threads about their issues... I'd be willing to bet that this fix will indeed fix many of their problems...
I also posted one additional new topic here on the Safari board and one on the Tiger board for new readers looking for solutions to the same system hangs they may be getting while surfing.
If this fix does indeed help any of you other readers, please post back here so that Bee can indeed see that I'm not just posting here to waste my time...

  • Pages freezes

Before I start, thanks to everybody here - this forum is very helpful. Have found many answers.
However, no I am stucked. I have found other topics talking about it but none helped. So that is the story:
Pages freezes the whole iMac Core Duo. Nothing works anymore - not even the keyboard combination of force quit. This is very frustrating and it happens a lot. Unfortunately can I not figure out when and why, seems to be totally random. There is no crash log or at least I can not find it using console
Hope somebody can help me out
    Jacques

Sounds like it might be the lookupd daemon bug:
The symptoms of this problem are as follows:
Applications (apparently all of them) then to launch, first bouncing in
the dock for up to a minute and then simply having a stationary, inactive
    icon in the dock
After that, the system becomes completely unresponsive; switching between
open applications works, but finder functions are unavailable (the dock
doesn't work, menus are inaccessible, force quit key command does not
    respond).
You can not log out, restart or shut down.
Eventually, you are left with a spinning cursor and must shut down the
    machine using the power button.
These symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS
X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS
X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
    The Quick Fix
If you find yourself in this situation, the quick fix that has worked for me
has been to disconnect the ethernet cable from the system for about five to
ten seconds and then plug it back in. You may also have luck turning off the
hub, router or access point for five to ten seconds and then turning it back
on. This forces the system to kill and restart lookupd, thereby freeing up
Mac OS X, until the next time it hangs...
If you're accessing the net at all (which, if you're on broadband, your mac is doing most of the time), lookupd will eventually hang, freezing the OS.

  • Using Airport Time Capsule as target/workplace for a Data Rescue III type software

I need to recover data from a 'bad' disk on a Macbook anno 2007. My idea is to mount the drive on a Macbook Air using target disk mode and a thunderbolt/Firewire connection. The mounting goes fine but copying the data leads to a hanging Mac Air. So now I put all hope on a Data Rescue type software in that such software will circumvent the hanging issue! Problem is that the Mac Air don't have enough memory to store the hopefully recovered data. Essentially, I have no proper 'target disk' for the recovered data and need to buy one (as well as buying the rescue/recovery software).
So, can I use a Airport Time Capsule as target/workplace for a Data Rescue type software on my Mac Air? Is this a proper mountable hard drive?
    Thanks,
    RA

No, it is better to get a USB drive. You can mount a TC drive but it is just as likely to unmount itself half way through.. keep networks out of the already many problems you have.

  • Frozen battery-meter and clock

Every now and then (quite often, actually) - the menu-bar at the top of my screen freezes - making the clock stop and the battery-meter freeze. This means from time to time I have no idea that my battery is running out of power, and the macbook suddenly shuts down! The last time this happened it went on for about 3 hours without being able to update the battery-meter or clock!
    What can I do?

I was able to figure out the cause and solve this issue on my end.
I opened Activity Monitor and saw "SystemUIServer (Not Responding)", so I looked up process:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/SystemUIServer
Apparently, SystemUIServer manages the 'menu extras' on the upper right-hand side of the menu bar. There was also this other useful tidbit of information:
"A bad hardware state may cause the SystemUIServer to hang. Often, unplugging the external device will unhang the SystemUIServer"
"The SystemUIServer is owned by the logged in user (as opposed to root) and automatically restarts if it crashes or is force quit."
I had recently started using on of my older iPods again, so I guessed that maybe it was the device in a "bad hardware state", so I unplugged iPod (super old 3rd gen 15 gig...formatted originally on Windows...back when I was a PC)
Right away the SystemUIServer process unfroze in Activity Monitor and the upper right hand menue items are no longer hanging.
So my advice to others with this problem is to unplug devices from USB (iPod, etc...) and see if it eventually unfreezes.
I've seen iPods hang Mac OS during bootup as well, but this is a new one for me.

  • Mac Pro hangs on authentication

I have a Mac Pro dual-dual 3GHz which has a sporadic issue where (as far as I can tell) processes hang when authentication is attempted.
I haven't seen any rhyme or reason to when this occurs. Sometimes, I will be in the middle of working, and I will notice that Terminal hangs when I try to open a new window. Other times, it will occur after the machine has gone to sleep (it wakes up fine, but then attempting to log in will hang).
When this issue is occurring, all the following will hang:
    * Logging in via loginwindow
    * Switching users
    * Logging in via SSH
    * Performing sudo
    * Opening a new Terminal window
The problem doesn't always go away upon rebooting. Sometimes, I reboot and everything is normal; on other occasions, the login window will hang after I enter my username and password and click Log in, even after multiple reboots.
This problem has never occurred when rebooting in safe mode. However, often I can reboot in safe mode, log in, everything appears normal (for safe mode), but when I reboot in normal mode, the inability to authenticate occurs again.
When this problem is occurring, it occurs on all accounts.
Eventually, after enough reboots, I am able to log in and work normally (until the next time it happens).
Also, I have never noticed anything wrong with either CPU or memory usage when this problem is occurring.
On one occasion when this was happening, I happened to have an open root SSH session available. I ran sc_usage on securityd and found that it was waiting on 'machmsg_overwritetrap'. It waited over 5 minutes without anything further happening. I'm not sure what, if anything, this indicates. (Also, 'LASTPATHNAME_WAITEDFOR' was blank.)
    Any ideas would be welcome.

Corupted object.... I had this under 10.3.x..... had to wipe clean and reload OS X from CD.
I read in a post that you could boot in safe mode, and delete "something" (I do not remember now) where the authentification data is stored and then you re-create your users... search past posts.
My suggestion of a clean reload is a safer bet that you will have a clean system.

  • Performance issues with 10.6/1/2 - Mac hangs every 5 minutes

    Hi all,
A recent problem I have started to experience is that my Mac keeps hanging, avery 5-10 minutes the beach ball comes up and freezes the machine; sometimes for 3-5 minutes and it is really frustrating me!
Didn't have any issues with a fresh install of 10.6 or 10.6.1 but it all seems to have started with 10.6.2. Have reinstalled 10.6 then 10.6.1 but now still having the issue.
Any ideas, there isn't anything I have changed other than OS upgrade so am at a loss and becoming incredibly frustrated!
    Thanks in advance :0)

  • I recently upgraded my iMac to 10.9.2 Nothing but problems since. Cannot connect reliably to a mixed pc/mac network at work, hangs at start up, hangs at shut down. Please help!

Can anyone offer suggestions as to why since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2 I can no longer access a mixed pc/mac network? Previous to the upgrade, I did not have any problems. Other macs within my office can still access it, so I know it is not a network based issue. It exists in my machine only, and the other matching machine that exists in the office did NOT do the upgrade and has no problems. (Bummer for me)
    I have:
    Reset the PRAM
    Reset the SMC
Turned off the network Wifi and rebooted, then turned it on again, still ridicously slow when I try and connect to shared pc server. I can connect to other macs though.
Seems to alternate between a normal start up time, and a ridicously slow start up time with no apparent connecting reason as to why
I have a shared HP Laser printer on the network that is working with other computers accessing it, perhaps this is the conflict? It is in Wifi mode, but the software is loaded on my computer. However, prior to the upgrade, I had no problems.
My mail crashed shortly after installing 10.9.2, but I did finally get that up and running, but sometimes it loads and tells me that there is "No Mailbox Selected" in the initial opening Mail window. This is new, it never used to do that. I can select "Inbox" and see my mail, but I never used to need this step.
When I try and access the shared network that has always worked previously, it now will not load the shared docs and folders, just sits there, and hangs. Sometimes it will load the folders after about 5 minutes, but will not allow me to open them.
I do not run any virus protection software.
Any ideas? I would be infinitely grateful for suggestions.

Your download or install of the update may have been corrupt. Visit the Mac App Store and re-download the update or visit http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726 and download the 10.9.2 update combo and re-install.
If that fails to solve the problem please post back and post a EtreCheck Report which you can locate at:

  • Mail hangs on open & Crashes Mac

This past weekend I've been having severe problems with Mail. First it began hanging when you open the program with the spinning beach ball as it was trying to connect to the server. Righ clicking on the mail icon indicated that the application was not responding. If you tried to force quit it would lock up the whole computer.
Several suggestions indicated doing things like taking the envelope index journal out the library/mail directory. During the rebuilds (i've tried this four times now) it would crash with the darkened screen indicating that you had to reboot the computer. On the few successful rebuilds, it still hung up the program when checking email.
Another suggestion was to delete the mail.plist file. I did that and redid all the account information. No luck.
Another suggestion was the open mail with the shift key held down. No Luck.
I'm about at my wits end. I spent the last few months fighting my computer since I put Tiger on it. I've wiped the entire harddrive and did a complete rebuild two weeks ago. It seemed better but still now stable. Any suggestions? Is my Mac simply dying and I need a new computer?
My TI powerbook G4 1GHZ Has been running flawlessly with identical software as the Powermax G4 Mirror door. That is was is leading me to believe that hardware problems are underlying this whole thing!
    You help is greatly appreciated!

PM G4 Mirror Door   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1.25 GB RAM

This is not necessarily a solution but more of a troubleshooting tip. Take the ENTIRE Mail folder in [Your User Directory]->Library, make a copy of it and then move it out of the library folder, say just to applications or something. Then reboot and try launching Mail. If it doesn't launch you have a software issue. If it does launch you have a data issue and you may want to move each mailbox back one at a time. If it's software, try booting from a CD and doing a Repair. That rarely works but it's worth a shot. If you'd like any details on the general steps suggested let me know.
