Hanging on Power Off

This has happened to me about 3 times. In the evening I turn my phone off and plug it in. I press and hold power off button and release after the 3 second count. The Blackberry word comes up and the phone sits there. sometimes it will disappear but you can there is still a faint backlight visible. I power back on again and then try again and it usually works second time. Anyone else have this or am I the only lucky one or doing something wrong? Its not a huge deal nor any sort of deal breaker for me, would like to figure it out though.

I think you might be on to something. I turned wifi off before powering down last night and it shut off without a hitch. I'll try it again a few times and report back.

  • System Hangs - requires power off, then panic

I have a mac mini that runs all the time at a weekend house. I can access it remotely using Apple Remote Desktop. Recently, the Mini has started to hang. It runs (all lights on) but screen goes dark and machine cannot be ping'ed on network. I tried unplugging all USB and Firewire devices but to no avail. I cannot tell what cause the hang/crash. There is no Panic in the Console Log at time of hang. There is a panic that gets listed at start-up though. This has happened three time now so I am a bit concerned. The last time it happened Oct 30 and machine was reset Nov 6. From the System Log:

any ideas what is going on?

Just happened again last night (11/25). Machine stops responding and screen is dark. Happens while Mac Mini is unattended so I cannot say exactly what the cause it. I went through every log in the console and the last entry was:
    2009-11-25 19:46:55:791|SyncServer|60712|c10f10|Server|Info| Goodnight, Gracie.
The last file saved on my harddrive (from Indigo events window) was :
2009-11-25 19:39:08 RCS The MasterBedroomTemperature is 58 degrees.
I came to machine after I could not remote into into, fond screen dark and all I could do was restart. Restart came with typical panic message, but it was dated 11/26 (after poweroff restart). I do not know why I keep freezing, but it has happened about 5 times over last 3 months.

  • Leopard hangs - have to power off  - force quit doesn't work

On several occasions Leopard has hung - try to run activity monitor to kill problem app - I get the bouncing icon but nothing else. force quit does not work on it. Can't log off - can put to sleep, but resumes in same hung state. Once I hard power off and restart, a I get a series of beeps, not just one and a normal start - no error messages. Other programs also would not respond to force quit including parallels desktop.

    Hi,
Have had same problem here. My iMac is only a few days old, and barely anything on it before the upgrade from tiger to leopard.
Tried lauching thunderbird tonight, and the app just sat on the dock bouncing for a while, but the application never actually seemed to launch.
Tried force quit, but didn't have any effect. Also could not log-off, or shut down, as it said the application wasn't responding. This does seem very windoze-like!

  • [Solved] System does not power off, hangs at "System Halted"

Not sure if this is systemd or kernel related, and after the recent round of upgrades it happens on one of my computers and not the other.
I'm using systemd and do have systemd-sysvcompat installed, but no daemons are started with initscripts.
When I power off from the KDE desktop using the poweroff icon in the tray, it gets to the point where it says "System Halted" on the console screen
but the computer does not power off. If I power off using the physical power button on the computer, exactly the same thing happens.
However, if I power off using "sudo systemctl start poweroff.target" it works perfectly.
How can I get it to work properly again in KDE or if I hit the power button? Why does it work perfectly on one computer but not the other?

Okay, this has now been solved. Thanks are due to bgc1954 and Trillby for pointing me in the right direction. Very much appreciated.
My search ability, usually very good, completely failed me on this one. However, a few hints was all I needed.
    For the record:
To make the power button poweroff instead of halt: edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf and uncomment HandlePowerKey and make sure its value is set to poweroff.
To make kde poweroff properly, edit /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and look for the [Shutdown] section. Ensure HaltCmd is uncommented and set to /sbin/poweroff.
As to why the behaviour was different on my other computer, for some reason the relevant kdmrc entry on that computer was commented out. Apparently that makes it work correctly. I don't know why they were different, as I don't recall changing either.

  • Windows 7 hangs and switches off network access

We are running a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit operating system as our server.
About on 30 minute intervals the computer hangs and switches off network access.
If the computer is in this state and you try and access it from another computer nothing happens.
While in this state you can see the desktop indicating that it's not in sleep mode.
The problem is rectified by click the mouse on the computer.
It has not gone into a sleep mode as everything on the power options is set to never.
    Please help?

    Wow. Okay...
I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.
My only comment would be re: your computer specs:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • 865PE power off issues

i got a ancient 865pe neo-2 ect..... i have been having issues with it not powering off, i got a new power supply (figured i killed the old with overloading it) i installed the new one and it will not power off like a ATX power supply should.
i can hold the button and it will turn off
i never changed the power settings, but something could be a-mis there. what settings do i need to have set
i believe windows tells it to power down cause i hear the hard drives spin down after the shutdown splash goes away (xp)
    i looked at the FAQ
    i cannot set s5 or g3 as modes. i have bios 9/29/04
    9. Power Management
    Q: What are S1/POS and S3/STR modes?
S1/POS = Power On Suspend, nothing turn off just that everything is running in extremely slow.
S3/STR = Suspend to RAM, PSU only powers 5V_STBY to the board for RAM refreshing, the rest all off.
    Additionally,
S4 = Suspend to Disk. Win2k/XP calls it "Hibernation" mode. In this mode, the RAM and CPU state images are copied into the HDD. After S4 mode, you can safely remove the power cord.
S5 = Soft Off. PSU still supplies 5V_STBY.
G3 = mechanical off. No power at all to the board.
Q: Where to set the standby modes?
For S1 and S3, you can set the standby mode to either S1 or S3, not both, in the BIOS. Note that Windows cannot choose which standby mode to run. You have to set it in the BIOS.
For S4, you can only set it in Windows 2k/XP (and ME, but not 98).

the 4 pin breakaway is just hanging there, the other 4 pin is plugged in near the cpu
no it stopped shutting off when i think i overloaded the 500w, the 750 does the same thing,
upon installing the 750 it does not shut off properly, which now leads to yet another bad board(the first one had a LGA socket that was eating cpus) or a bios issue
the 500w was not putting out the volts i needed so i figured it was dead
my voltages are better now though, before they were 11.2-12.0 and i think the +3 was 2.5ish, now they are +12.59 and +3.14 vcc is 5.04
    bios stats it is 9/29/04
    specs are as follows
MSI 865PE Neo-2P (or similar i cant think of the exact name)
    p4 3.2e presshot 800fbs 1mb cache
2048mb ultra dual channel ddr 400 (pc 3200)
    WD PATA 80gb hdd
    WD SATA 160gb hdd
nVidia 7800 GS OC (bfg tech) AGP vid card
    sony burners and flopppy drive
and the ultra x-2 750w power supply
2 case fans, a hdd fan, 2 on the psu , one on the cpu and one on the vid card,
damn cpu gets near 80*c but that normal for this cpu (considering im idleing at 50*c right now, with a case temp or 36*c)

  • Sky+ HD box unresponsive, slow and sometimes just freezes requiring a reboot/power off

Hi, I have a standard Sky+ HD box which must be a few years old now with the following specs: Model Number: R010.070.87.00PVersion Number: 9730B3Manufacturer: Samsung Recently the box has become really slow to respond to the remote control when either watching recordings or just live TV.  Also, frequently not responding at all after a period of time which resorts in a power down using the power off button and unplugging the mains, leaving for 30 seconds then plugging back in.  this issue seems to happen most whilst watching recordings although it has happened whilst watching live TV also. I appear to be running the latest software so these issues really all point to the recent code update. I have also performed several planner rebuilds with no affect/improvement at all. I've checked the batteries in the remote, which are fine and new. The box is in a well ventilated cupboard, stood on chocks to allow airflow all around the box. I rang Sky from work to report the issue and get help but the engineer could not help me unless I was in the same room as the box, so this is my next step to call them whilst at home. I wonder whether I can push this issue and get another box or a newer 2TB box gratis rather than having to pay the £150 fee.  this could be the tipping point to force me over to a different option such as Freesat or Nowtv etc This is so annoying and is going to make TV viewing over the christmas period a real pain for all the family. Thanks for any help and advise, Cheers, Jason

I'm getting the same problems with a Sky HD+ 1TB Amstrad DRX 895 - On power-up from cold it's OK, but the longer it's left on, even in standby, the slower it responds. Eventually it just hangs, and the problem is getting worse. I found that turning off HDMI Control in the Settings improved matter a bit (why does it default 'on'?), but that just delays the inevitable. At first I suspected a software problem, such as a memory leak that built up until it crashed the box, but the fact that it won't run properly after a reboot - even after powering off - unless it's left to cool down, suggests it's a hardware fault. Some previous Sky box models have had power supply problems when the box reaches a certain age - the capacitors start failing, causing the same kind of problems. I had such a box, and got a replacement power supply kit which fixed it. I think it's likely the newer boxes have this problem too - they're built with the cheapest components that don't last well. You might find the SatCure site can help - they have lists of repairers around the country who can fix Sky boxes or sell you DIY repair kits, or refurbished Sky boxes for less than a new one. I'm going to check out my local repairer.

  • POWER OFF ISSUE K8 NEO4 PLATINUM (DON´T SHUTDOWN ALWAYS RESTART)

I have a strange behavior with my main board.  It has worked well for almost three years. But now, I decided to change everything to a new case, and I decided to upgrade from XP to Windows Vista (no real upgrade, I format my hard disk and perform a clean install). And I have something very strange happened.
Every time I shut down the computer, performs the process smoothly, and when it goes off, the computer is restarted automatically. Do not stay off.
It's the same if keep pressing the power button for about two seconds. (in post for example)  It seem to be shut down, the fans almost stopped immediately but the computer starts up again.
The only way to turn it off is to keep pressing the power button more than seven seconds. But I cannot turn off normally from the command “shut down” Windows.
I tried several solutions, without any success:
Try several power buttons on of different cases: Also,  I have to manually shutdown the computer joining the pins of the ignition of the mainboard ( Not worry, I have been careful not to make any short circuit)
Test setup minimum, only memory, processor and video card. ( We also tried another video card and other memory).
    Try different power supplies.
Disable all peripherals in the bios. (usb, parallel and com port, audio, lan, ATA, SATA, raid, IRD. IE1934, floppy, etc)
Change all possible power configurations of the bios:
    IOAPIC Function (enable and disable)
    MPS: (1.4 and 1.1).
ACPI Standby State (S1 and S3)
    Video Off Method (all options)
Power Button Function (power off and suspend)
Restore On AC Power Loss (keep off)
    Wake-Up Event Activity (disable everything)
I don´t changed or updated the BIOS. I have installed version 1.9. The last according MSI Liveupdate.
Actually, I do not know what to do. I do not think that is any configuration of windows, that this behavior as I have with the minimum configuration, without any operating system. Also disable all wakeup events of the network for nforce chipset from device manager in Windows.
The computer works fine on Windows, I don´t have any “death blue screen”, no hanging, freeze or problems with devices or drivers.
I need your suggestions and assist me with some answers:
Can the new drivers for Vista to make changes directly in the firmware of the components of mainboard? (Especially MSI chipset and Nforce drivers)
Will could have damaged somewhere in the process of changing case? (remember, the computer works fine in windows without errors)
Can I make a degradation of the BIOS firmware to an earlier version?
I will receive all suggestions and ideas to solve my problem. It is a good mainboard and I think ridiculous change for the inconvenience.
Thank you all for your help.
    Josh

    "Same issue with all PSU"
What stats they have? (Amperes per each line)
Also read Moan Guide and provide full details about your PC.
Have you tried with different memory stick?
"Every time I shut down the computer, performs the process smoothly, and when it goes off, the computer is restarted automatically. Do not stay off."
That means auto power on? Have you tried with mainboard out of PC case?(It could be shorting issue, or power switch issue)

    Hello !!
I know it sounds a bit crazy but please try to set your windows swap file on the same partition ( C:\ )  like windows is.
I have heard people fixed their shutdown problem with it.....
    Good luck
    Greetz MurdoK
Yes, that is correct, I have had this problem before on another system where the swap file was on another partition, but not the case here. Swap file is on C:\
Thanks to all for the info, I really appreciate it and please keep it coming.

I updated the other libr but now it will not open the main to update. What do I do?

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

Reboot the phone:  hold down the power button and the home button at the same time until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "slide to shut down".  When the screen has been completely black for a few minutes, press the power button again.
