Hanging when closing applications.
For the past couple days I cannot close an app it seems without it hanging. It never really quits completely, rather is still running and I have to force quit the app. Any ideas why? It's getting to be very annoying since my Mac won't shutdown unless all apps are closed, so it hangs while shutting down. Thanks

Try this:
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
• Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
• Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
• Log in and empty Trash.
• Restart normally and log in.
Please post back with an update on whether this helped.

Mail accessing the internet all the time and hangs when closing or deleting
Why is it every time I look at my DSL modem when Mail is open there is activity and when I close Mail it stops? It's only set to get the mail every 5 min but it's constantly accessing the internet. The other problem is that it seems to hang when closing and sometimes it takes several mins before it will delete an email that I wanted it to delete. Any ideas? I'm running 10.4.4 with a FRESH install, not an upgrade. I only have .Mac mail accounts so there is no other active accounts that Mail has to access to get mail.
This has only been going on since I upgraded to 10.4+ so I tried to reload the 10.4 several times without any change.
Thanks, JasonOkay I used the Activity Monitor to check out mail while it was using the DSL connection. It was using 1.20% CPU and receiving 7 packets/sec. It's memory usage was slowly but steadily climbing until I shut it down. Then all the network activity stopped. As I said before this seems to start after mail has been open but not used for about 20-30 min and doesn't stop until I close mail.
Any ideas. Initially I was worried that there was an exploit in the new mail and someone was using it to access my mac. Is this something worth worrying about or is this a Mail quirk that will be patched later? Anyone else having this issue. I'm not even sure it's a problem but I don't see why Mail would be constantly downloading packets????

I have an applet which has been functioning fine, but with the introduction of IE7 and tabs, I suddenly have an issue. We run a web site for our users, through which, they view PDF files. Simply, users view PDF files through a web browser (with the AcrobatReader plug-in), which are displayed via 'getAppletContext.showDocument(URL, "_blank")'. This is a fairly small user community, and we require that AcrobatReader is present on their machines. As I mentioned, this has been working fine with no issues until IE7. Now that users can configure their web browsers to open all pop-ups in a tab, rather than a new browser instance, we have constant reports of the browser 'hanging' when they try to close the tab containing the PDF viewer. Again, there is no issue if their browser is configured to open a new browser instance. Any ideas?

It's not uncommon to launch IE. Open PDFs through IE. Close IE. Find one or even multiple orphaned acrobat processes running. When you get enough of these they will crash acrobat if you attempt to open new ones. -
Application manager hangs when closing
Macbook pro 2.66 GHz i7 OS 10.6.8
CS6 Production Premium
Updates complete, Application Manager hangs and does not close when clicking "close". Force quit, on re-launch all apps up-to-date.
Is this a known bug?
Any input appreciated.

It looks like you are using an older version of the Adobe Application Manager. Please go to http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ and you can find a link to the current version of the Adobe Application Manager in the bottom right hand corner. -
Macbook crashing when closing applications
Hey all,
I'm having a major issue with my Macbook. In the last 3 days its crashed 5 times. It always seems to happen when I close an application but theres been no link between the app being closed and it crashing.
any ideas anyone?

Slow performance, weird memory usage, hanging when closing safari tab
Hi, i recently noticed that my MacBoo Pro was with low performance after some hours of use.
I'm a heavy user, so I try to monitor what might be causing it. What i note was:
After restart (or fresh start), my computer was ok;
I use applications like adobe Lightroom and VMWare Fusion;
Then I star feeling like Safari was too slow to open pages - I thought it was the internet link first, but even local webpages are slow. I notice that when a click to close a tab, it take almost 2 sec to do it. The same when click to open any link on that page.
I start the activity monitor, but my proc usage are low. Then, I notice the (weird) memory usage:
Take a look at "memory used". I closed all applications before take this screenshot. i've trying to identify what is consuming this memory, but.. no success.
Anyone has any idea what can might be causing it?
My HW information:
all my apps are updated.Memory usage was normal when you took that screenshot.
When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Mouse pointer hangs when switching applications
I have noticed that occasionally my mouse will hang (freeze, stall, get stuck, whatever you like) for about 0.5 seconds when I switch applications either by cmd-tab or by clicking with the mouse. I have not figured out a good way to replicate the problem but it happens pretty consistently on my computer (MBP2.2 with Leopard) and I was wondering if there was anyone else having similar issues. Thanks.
How many programs do you have open, what are they, and how much RAM is in your MacBook?
A pause during application switches often means that OS X needs to page data in or out of the virtual memory swap file on disk because it can't hold everything you're currently doing in the RAM that's available. -
JHS11 TP2 - Jdeveloper hangs when generating application

In the JAG Developer log the last step is : JAG-INFO-00000 [ MenuAdminService ] Validation application definition started.

I tried to use a different jdev_user_dir but that did not solve my problem.
Reinstalling JDeveloper did not solve my problem either.
Do you have any experiences like this?

I found something. In my model.jpx file I found the folowing tag multiple times (about 3500 times):

MacBook White lagging and hanging when certain applications are being run
My 9-month-old MacBook White (Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz) lags whenever I use SketchUp, and hangs sometimes when I use FlightGear or X-Plane (flight simulators). No other applications were running when these were being used. Is it a CPU problem, or a RAM shortage? Any answers and/or clarification would be much appreciated.
Can you go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and check that all the processes you are running are Intel (you will find this info under the "Kind" column in the Activity Monitor window).
Also see (in the same window, under the "%CPU" column) if there appears to be any processes which are using an inordinate amount of CPU. -
Safari 2.0.4 for Mac -- Hangs when closing tab -- Must force quit
I've had this problem with safari from 10.4.6 to 10.4.9, from what I can tell. It has also reared it's head on my macbook and my iMac(intel).
It typically happens when I have a number of tabs open and I go to close my current tab. It will hang. It also commonly happens when the page viewed has some sort of multi media on it. like youtube. I've enabled debug tools for safari and completely wiped out all plugins and reinstalled the usual, flash, flip4mac and there is the built-in apple quicktime and java.

Adding a new user account to your computer
You can create individual user accounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete to cancel.

White bar when closing application

I added a UIStatusBarStyle property in the info.plist and set it to UIStatusBarStyleBlackOpaque
This works fine and as long as the app runs I do have a black status bar.
But when the app turns off, during de fade out animation there is a white strip on top of the window as shown in the screenshot.
I tried to set the window and tab bar controller simulated metrics parameters to Black and even none without success
I had a look at the behavior of Shazam which also has a black status bar.
First their plist is not correct since they use UIStatusBarStyleOpaqueBlack instead of ...BlackOpaque. They must get the job done another way !
Then I noticed they have no nib file. So they must build the interface programmatically.
Last, when the app turns off, it seems the picture that fades out does'nt include the status bar at all.

Mouse stops responding when closing applications...
When I close an application, the mouse stops responding for about 1-3 seconds. I continue to gesture on the trackpad until it suddenly comes back. It it fairly consistent when it starts...but the behavior doesn't start consistently. A reboot usually helps...but I am not interested in rebooting every time I have a problem with the mouse cursor.
Turns out it is the option to ignore trackpad input in the preferences. When I would close an application, it would think that I was typing and would ignore the trackpad for a second. I turned it off and I am back to normal.

ITunes hangs when instructed to close
iTunes just hangs when closed down. Only way to close is by Ctl, Alt, Del - But even going through the task manager it take ages. This problem has arisen since iTunes offered a newer version. Any ideas?

It is possible that simply disabling sharing in your preferences may help.
Otherwise, bonjour can cause freeze on exit.

I suspect that the database environment believes that another process has the database open for writing. This cannot be the case, however, as all applications that access the database do so via an interface library I wrote that registers a termination function via the atexit() system-call to ensure that both the DB and DB_ENV handles are properly closed -- and all previously-executed applications terminated normally.
The interface library opens the database like this (apparently, this forum doesn't support indentation, sorry):

That can't be it. I'm using a structured programming style in which the successful initialization of a cursor is ultimately followed by a closing of the cursor. There's only one place where the code does this and it's obvious that the cursor gets released.
I've also read the CDB section.
