Hangs after updating to 10.4.5

896MB RAM
G4 DP 500MHz
I've had no problems with 10.4.4 but saw the software update pop up on my desktop. (Big mistake.)
Updated via software update with no interruptions. Restarted as directed. Problem: OS X will show progress bar moving left to right. Normally, as soon as the bar hits the right side, the login screen appears. That's not happening. OS X is hanging.
I've read that some folks have rebooted in Safe Mode. That didn't work for me. I've read that some had problems with the Startup items. That didn't work for me. I've read (after previous upgrade problems) that some folks had problems with Cache files. That didn't work for me. I even removed the Extensions.kextcache file (and the other one) with no luck. OS X is still hanging. I removed all connections and extra RAM with no luck.
I could be wrong but I think the problem lies with login since OS X is moving along all the way until the login screen is supposed to appear (but doesn't.) I've found these files: waiting4loginwindow.pid and loginwindow.boottime. Both are the most recent files that were modified at or after the time of software update to 10.4.5 from 10.4.4.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next (besides a painful reinstall back to 10.4.) I've rebooted to OS 9.2.2 to submit this question. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It seems to me that some fail to realize that Apple did not intend for all this mess. Just think about that for a moment. Why would Apple permit the Software Update to automatically appear, permit you to update the software, all without insisting you do the following: Verify/Repair Permissions, take out all extra RAM, disconnect all wires (except the power and display,) etc., etc? It's because MacOS is supposed to be simple.
Some of us have found glitches. I think I found a simple glitch. So simple, it has cost me a day's worth of work. I still haven't been able to find a solution.
If you read other problems and the solutions are recommending reinstall, you are essentually reading about our MacOS becoming more and more like Windows. Not good. Stating that all updates should be applied only after you have done all of the above is not good either. I think I've learned my lesson to not update any more.
If you do have a solution, thanks in advance for any info. (Rebooted in OS 9.2.2.)

  • Iphone 4 keeps on hanging after updating to iOS 5.0 and later to iOS 5.1

My iphone 4 keeps on hanging after updating to iOS 5.0.  I can no longer make and receive calls.  If I am successful in making a call, it will never end even after pressing stop.  The problem still persists even after updating to iOS 5.1.  How do I resolve this problem?

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • Computer hangs after update to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

After updating to 10.6.8, programs hang...the busy icon circles for 2-3 minutes when I try to do anything. Even when I try to access 'About this mac'.

In going through the suggestion to post the startup items, I came across a problem posted in Parallels website that Parallels 6.0 caused slow downs on the 10.6.8 system. I updated my Parallels application late last night to 7.0, as that was supposed to fix the slow-down, but it did not fix my computer. Still slowwwww when not in Safe Mode. I must use Safe Mode to even use my computer...

  • ITunes Hanging after updating few songs

Just bought a new 80GB and have been trying transfer songs from my library. My library is in an external 200 GB hard disk. I upgraded to iTunes 7.2. Run XP
Now i Tunes hangs regularly after updating songs ranging 20 to 200 or so songs. I have over 7k songs and find it a big trouble to force shut iTunes each time.
Have tried resotring with same result.
Any solutions I would be mighty obliged.

I do not have shuffle turned on. I do have one track that without the check. I thought that this check meant skip when shuffling. When I look at the options for the track (Get Info/Options) "Skip when shuffling" is not checked. iTunes does not quit on this song.

This is a common situation.  Many third-party internet apps/plugins/extensions claim to be compatible with Macs.
And many are not.  It's important to remember to check for any updates to this kinds or things prior to upgrade.
At any rate, very happy you've got your problem resolved.

  • Safari slow slow slow and hangs after update?

After the recent update Safari loads slowly or not at all. It hangs mid-laod most of the time. My Macbook Pro is late 2008, osx lion

I am also having the same issue.  Prior to updating the other night, my safari loading extremely fast.  Now, pages take forever to load, some freeze and won't load at all, and yet others will load half way and then stop as though its done.
    Anyone have suggestions?

  • 10.5.3 Slow/Hangs after update

I have completed my "upgrade" from Tiger to Leopard with my Macbook Pro. After the initial install, I repaired permissions from the disk, installed the 10.5.3 combo update downloaded from apple.com, and then used software update to finish updating my other apple software (including a keyboard firmware update).
Now I understand that there may still be some bugs with Leopard in general, but I want to source out and get rid of one major bug. The computer's resources don't seem to be used excessively by any specific applications...but the finder hangs for 10-20 seconds fairly regularly.
The consistent one is when the login window first boots up, the second consistent hang is copying small files from folder to folder (even on the same boot drive!). Anyone have thoughts on specific preference files, or log files I can watch for? So far Leopard is getting a mediocre review.

After starting over, a clean install, then migrating some of my old applications...things work great!

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
    Do they show now?
Do a Get Info on the Applications folder, what rights does it report?

  • Hanging after update to 10.4.3.

Hi, since I'ved upgrade to 10.4.3 my computer doesn't come back after the sleep function of energyfunction. The only way up is to complete restart the computer.
    Anyone a idea?

I updated to the recent 10.4.5 combo with the Software
Update program , I have that as a default . The machine ran
pretty well but is presently observably slow upon starting
or waking . Timing the transitions from sleep restart functions
are including ten minute periods . The machine seems happy
enough once it gets its legsback . Just pmu pram and Bobs
your uncle ? Routine-the permission repair-unplug usb prior
to allowing updates . During these periods I am uncertain
if the machine is on or off as the screen appears dead
and clicking typing and other activities which create a
response fail to cause a response in the machine for
many minutes . I am certain the machine is on
as it has some small warmth . I try a forced restart , if
for nothing else . This is also tricky as the , to all appearances
, inactivity is hard to measure and killing a machine
    which seems already dead .

  • ITunes won't force quit and is hanging after update

OK, so I downloaded the new update for my iPhone. While it said preparing to install it took a long time. I figured it was frozen so I did a force quit. Now I'm stuck. I can't get into my iPhone because it is showing a picture of the plug going into iTunes logo.
I can't force quit itunes either. It just doesn't do anything. I tried rebooting and iTunes is still "open" and won't respond.
    Any help would be appreciated

I seemed to have gotten it to finally disappear after rebooting again and again. Though it sent my phone into recovery mode so I'm working on that

  • Keychain Access hangs after update to 10.7.2. Any help?

I recently updated to OSX 10.7.2 and can no longer open the Keychain Access app. It hangs on startup. A side effect of this is that I can no longer access my department's WPA Enterprise network as network preferences cannot access the certificates stored in the keychain.
    Please help!

    Hello,
We are finding the same solution seems to work for the time being with our systems at the University I work at.
However, it is not ideal because it stops the Keychain from checking whether or not a certificate has been expired or revoked. The two settings, OSCP and CRL are both methods to make sure a certificate is still valid and should be trusted by checking up the chain to the issuer. If the issuer is on the internet and you are stuck in a captive portal then how can you check? I think Lion is getting into a catch 22 here.
You can set these values in the command line using the following:
    To set the CRL settings:
defaults write com.apple.security.revocation CRLStyle -string OFF
    To set the OCSP settings:
defaults write com.apple.security.revocation OCSPStyle -string OFF
The next time my test machine beachballs while trying to launch Keychain access, I am going to try this as a quick workaround myself. We are seeing a continual stream of students coming into our HelpDesk with this problem and the fixes above only work for a short period of time. Then it all breaks again.
I have our network security people looking into allowing the certificate checks for our systems to go even from the captive portal.  I will report back any success or failure as a workaround for this method.
Having to set machines to not check for revokation of certificates seems like one more step closer to just throwing put the whole trusted certificate idea as a usable security method.
